Коли вирішувалася доля Магди, її улюблений брат Густав не захистив сестру. Тим самим, він засудив дівчину на заслання та багаторічні страждання в Радянській Україні, куди вона поїхала зі своїм чоловіком. Прочитавши лист, Петер Хоманн вирішує з’ясувати долю Магди і знайти її нащадків – це його справа честі. Однак на шляху до своєї мети він має непереборний бар'єр – Берлінську стіну. Саме возз’єднання – головна ідея фільму. Ця історія доводить, що сімейні зв’язки та пам’ять поколінь міцніші за війну та смерть.
