00:00:28
I grew up in a country where
00:00:30
because of my mom being a former tennis
00:00:32
player all lies were on me everyone had
00:00:36
something to say about me everyone kept
00:00:38
saying that I'm not gonna make it and
00:00:41
you know even though I had the right
00:00:43
people around me trying to avoid all
00:00:45
those thoughts then
00:00:46
for a kid it wasn't easy to just you
00:00:49
know
00:00:50
block everything that you know I could
00:00:52
hear from all the people around me
00:00:56
so for me it was and I had a few coaches
00:00:58
saying that you know
00:01:00
it's tough for you to make it the top
00:01:02
10. so when I got that level for me it
00:01:05
wasn't something that I expected that I
00:01:07
would you know achieve
00:01:14
well everyone thinks that you know
00:01:16
getting on top of the top of the game
00:01:18
it's just something that
00:01:20
yeah everyone is dreams often
00:01:24
that's what everyone that plays tennis
00:01:26
you know they want to just get on top of
00:01:28
the game and on top of the ranking but
00:01:31
I can tell you for a fact that it's not
00:01:33
easy to handle it like for myself it
00:01:35
wasn't easy getting to number three in
00:01:38
the world which is my current ranking
00:01:41
and it's
00:01:42
the highest ranking according to it
00:01:44
wasn't easy for me to handle the first
00:01:46
few months
00:01:48
not that number three was my goal number
00:01:51
one is my goal and you know as I said
00:01:53
multiple times you know winning grand
00:01:56
slams and a lot of tournaments is my
00:01:57
goal but
00:01:59
it wasn't easy for me to handle it and
00:02:01
being one of the best female you know
00:02:04
tennis players at the moment
00:02:07
it was there was a lot of pressure
00:02:09
pressure you know and it wasn't easy for
00:02:11
me to just carry that weight around I
00:02:14
think everything started because I never
00:02:17
ever expected to be one of the best
00:02:19
players in the world
00:02:20
then for me getting to that point it was
00:02:23
something
00:02:25
shocking and
00:02:27
you know I remember that matching in at
00:02:29
in Indian Wells that
00:02:31
the semi-final and I just started crying
00:02:35
and I was crying because I knew that for
00:02:39
myself I achieved something big
00:02:41
and it was it wasn't easy you know to
00:02:44
handle you know the expectations after
00:02:46
that then just going into terms as being
00:02:50
sometimes the number one seed and you
00:02:52
know I felt like I have to win I have to
00:02:54
perform I have to deliver I have to
00:02:56
there was a constant I have to
00:02:59
um so for me was it took time for me you
00:03:02
know just to feel like
00:03:04
myself again as I said and to
00:03:07
realize what I have to do to get over
00:03:09
this
00:03:11
um I've cried so many times in public
00:03:13
for different reasons
00:03:15
but
00:03:18
it was okay like I I don't mind that I
00:03:21
cried in public I don't mind that I was
00:03:23
you know on TV and there were a lot of
00:03:26
people watching me at that time
00:03:28
because that was the feeling I had at
00:03:30
the moment so I'm not I was not going to
00:03:32
hold it or you know trying to hide it in
00:03:34
any way
00:03:37
um I do believe that there are a lot of
00:03:39
players that you know
00:03:41
struggle with the same emotions as I do
00:03:43
in different ways
00:03:45
I know that I'm not the only one and
00:03:48
it's just that you know it's part of our
00:03:50
life and part of life in general I guess
00:03:54
[Music]
00:03:59
I felt like I was miserable the last few
00:04:01
months you know I felt like it it wasn't
00:04:04
the Maria that
00:04:07
um you know she smiles she laughs she
00:04:09
enjoys life
00:04:11
um everything had to do you know with
00:04:13
results and everything you know was
00:04:15
related to how good or bad I was playing
00:04:19
um so for me it was it wasn't easy you
00:04:22
know
00:04:24
three month four month period after
00:04:25
Indian Wells where I
00:04:28
I was just you know thinking of
00:04:31
winning winning and just you know stay
00:04:33
up in the rankings and stay you know at
00:04:35
the top of the game and that was the
00:04:37
only thing I had in mind and that made
00:04:40
me feel very tired very miserable as I
00:04:42
said but now you know once I realized it
00:04:45
I just
00:04:47
you know found a way to turn things
00:04:49
around
00:04:50
you know I'm a person that
00:04:53
I like to smile I like to laugh I like
00:04:56
to enjoy life and I felt like
00:04:59
everything except a few things in life
00:05:01
that I was doing
00:05:03
I was not happy and you know I was just
00:05:06
going from I was just traveling from
00:05:08
tournament to tournament just because I
00:05:10
had to and just because the calendar was
00:05:13
you know week after week and tournament
00:05:15
after tournament and I was just in a how
00:05:18
can I say like constant way of you know
00:05:22
dealing with things that I did not enjoy
00:05:25
doing
00:05:26
I did not enjoy myself being on the
00:05:28
court I had a few panic attacks every
00:05:31
now and then and
00:05:33
you know that was something very tough
00:05:36
to handle and
00:05:37
thankfully you know because I have the
00:05:39
right people around me they helped me
00:05:41
get over this
00:05:49
I started back in 2018 working with a
00:05:52
psychologist at home
00:05:54
because I was a little lost you know
00:05:56
with um
00:05:57
you know with myself and I I lived for
00:06:00
four years in Barcelona I did not enjoy
00:06:02
it at the end so I just wanted you know
00:06:06
to
00:06:07
get myself and my mind in the right you
00:06:10
know truck so
00:06:12
I I started working with her she has
00:06:15
helped me massively I still work with
00:06:17
her like
00:06:18
I tried to speak to her once a week I
00:06:20
trust her with
00:06:21
everything
00:06:23
she's probably the person that she knows
00:06:27
everything about me and I just yeah she
00:06:31
has a
00:06:32
very big place you know in my heart and
00:06:35
she's a very big part of what I have
00:06:38
achieved and what what kind of person I
00:06:41
am today
00:06:45
[Music]
00:06:48
everything you know it can be about my
00:06:51
career it can be about my personal life
00:06:53
it can be about my family it can be
00:06:56
about my team
00:06:58
um obviously there is there are certain
00:07:01
things that I we are working on and
00:07:03
things that
00:07:05
you know everyone has to work and
00:07:07
certain things and certainly issues
00:07:10
um
00:07:11
but if there is a something that I want
00:07:14
to focus more then we just focus on that
00:07:16
we do a lot of exercises
00:07:19
and it's very helpful I think it's the
00:07:22
best gift that I've ever done to myself
00:07:25
well
00:07:26
it's a lot of obviously breathing and
00:07:30
visualizing and just you know
00:07:34
going back on my childhood and
00:07:38
yeah things that it's tough for me to
00:07:41
explain because
00:07:43
a lot of people won't understand and she
00:07:47
has her own way which has helped me
00:07:49
maybe it doesn't help everyone but
00:07:52
I really really feel them
00:07:55
you know
00:07:56
that that was the right thing to do and
00:07:58
that is the right thing that I'm doing
00:08:00
right now
00:08:01
and recently you know I've been working
00:08:03
with the sports psychologist
00:08:05
um
00:08:06
which he has helped me a lot on and off
00:08:09
the court as well there are things that
00:08:11
both of them have you know similar
00:08:14
things on that I'm working on but a
00:08:17
sports psychologist is more like
00:08:20
you know skills inside the court the
00:08:22
skills on how to avoid pressure avoid
00:08:26
negative thoughts
00:08:27
um how to speak nicely to myself
00:08:32
uh just having the right routines before
00:08:35
and during the match and after how to
00:08:38
use the right words how to speak to
00:08:40
myself how to speak to my team
00:08:44
um you know it's these are new things
00:08:46
but
00:08:47
um
00:08:48
I mean both of these people have helped
00:08:51
me massively
00:08:57
I think a lot of people don't give
00:09:00
enough credit to what is mental Wellness
00:09:03
Mental Health
00:09:06
as I said before for me working with a
00:09:09
psychologist and you know when I was
00:09:13
23 you know having someone to speak to
00:09:16
and just
00:09:18
yes I'm very close to my family but it's
00:09:20
different like there are things that
00:09:23
you know she can help me with but and no
00:09:26
one else can so for me that was
00:09:29
that was the it was the best gift but it
00:09:32
was just something that I will never
00:09:34
regret because I think that
00:09:37
it is the key to happiness it is the key
00:09:40
to a lot of things
00:09:41
[Music]
00:09:48
around mental health because
00:09:52
the oldest generation
00:09:55
I believe that they felt like you know
00:09:58
going through psychologist means that
00:10:00
are speaking to a psychologist it means
00:10:02
that I have some kind of mental issue or
00:10:06
I'm crazy or you know something is wrong
00:10:09
with me which is not it's the opposite I
00:10:12
think that
00:10:14
it's healthy to you know speak to
00:10:17
someone it's healthy to try and become a
00:10:20
better version of yourself and to solve
00:10:23
all your
00:10:24
because everyone has issues like let's
00:10:26
be deadly honest like who doesn't have
00:10:29
issues even if those are small ones or
00:10:32
big ones or whatever everyone has issues
00:10:35
so for me trying to you know get over
00:10:38
these ones it was it's massive and
00:10:40
that's why I think
00:10:42
there is this stigma around you know
00:10:45
mental mental health I still believe
00:10:48
that there are a lot of people in Greece
00:10:50
that like every country that you know
00:10:53
feel the way I just
00:10:55
spoke about how
00:10:57
if you you know work on that then it's
00:11:00
for sure you have a mental issue and you
00:11:02
have a problem and whatever you you know
00:11:05
however you want to describe it
00:11:08
but I see a lot of my friends and my
00:11:11
generation and a lot of
00:11:13
um
00:11:14
people around me that you know are
00:11:16
working on that and I'm very happy about
00:11:17
it
00:11:23
on court if my physicality is not there
00:11:27
and it's not a hundred percent because
00:11:30
you know I run a lot I move well so that
00:11:33
is one of my strengths on the court
00:11:36
if I don't feel that good then
00:11:39
yeah I get stressed I get like
00:11:42
you know I'm not feeling good I'm not
00:11:43
feeling like
00:11:45
I can give 100 but then you know these
00:11:48
two are connected obviously so if I'm
00:11:50
good up here
00:11:53
my movement and everything can get
00:11:56
better
00:11:57
sure I have ways of monitoring it and
00:12:02
it's just that you know
00:12:04
I I know what's good for me I know how
00:12:07
much sleep it's good for me I like to
00:12:10
sleep a lot I like to sleep early
00:12:13
I like good food because I come from a
00:12:16
country that you know would like to eat
00:12:18
well and which for me it makes me happy
00:12:21
you know having a good
00:12:24
like a nice meal for dinner
00:12:26
I go to bed and I'm happy and I'm
00:12:30
satisfied so that already helps my next
00:12:33
day you know and everything for either
00:12:35
my match day or my practice day and I'm
00:12:38
just in a better mood for sure
00:12:42
it does affect it a lot I mean days that
00:12:45
you know I just wake up and
00:12:47
if you know I'm not the nicest you know
00:12:51
person that doesn't happen that often
00:12:54
but half days that you know I just
00:12:57
you know I'm I'm pissed with no re like
00:13:00
with no reason or I'm
00:13:04
I'm not you know that smiley girl that
00:13:06
you see right now
00:13:08
um it can be I can be tough on the court
00:13:11
I can be very tough on my on myself
00:13:13
sometimes it can be tough on my team
00:13:16
um
00:13:17
which I'm not proud about but
00:13:20
unfortunately like tennis we play week
00:13:23
after week we're gonna have moments
00:13:24
where you know we can all be like
00:13:28
um I don't know robots every every
00:13:31
single week
00:13:39
I do like to visualize myself before you
00:13:42
know going on the court just picturing
00:13:44
myself on that specific chord I'm
00:13:46
playing
00:13:48
the tactic like follow tactic and just
00:13:50
think about it in my mind and just you
00:13:53
know go go through that by myself after
00:13:55
I you know speak with my team
00:13:59
um and then I don't want to be too
00:14:01
serious before I match I like to have
00:14:03
fun I like to you know joke around with
00:14:05
my team because if things get too
00:14:07
serious then I just it doesn't work with
00:14:10
me like I'm gonna you know enjoy my
00:14:14
10-15 minutes before the match with uh
00:14:17
with my people and
00:14:19
I'll try and just relax myself and just
00:14:22
as I said enjoy myself before because
00:14:24
otherwise it's gonna affect me on a
00:14:26
negative way
00:14:31
oh yes big time I get nervous sometimes
00:14:36
it's just
00:14:37
actually there are times that I don't
00:14:39
want to go on court uh there have been
00:14:41
times I didn't want to go on court but
00:14:44
then
00:14:46
I consider I don't know if this is gonna
00:14:48
sound you know
00:14:49
cocky or in any way just you know weird
00:14:53
for someone but I consider myself a
00:14:55
strong
00:14:56
person
00:14:58
um mentally and physically but then somehow
00:15:02
I get over this and I just go on Court
00:15:04
and do what I have to do and I think
00:15:06
that's
00:15:07
that's what got me that far
00:15:12
foreign
00:15:14
can be very lonely
00:15:18
yeah there are times that
00:15:21
especially this year like there were
00:15:23
times that
00:15:25
I was calling my mom and I was actually
00:15:28
crying
00:15:29
on the phone because
00:15:31
I just didn't want to
00:15:34
yeah I was feeling lonely I didn't want
00:15:35
to be there
00:15:37
and I felt like you know a little girl
00:15:40
just
00:15:41
calling her mom and just
00:15:44
crying because I didn't want to be
00:15:46
wherever that was
00:15:51
[Music]
00:15:54
some of the days that you know I wasn't
00:15:56
feeling good
00:15:59
I didn't want to get out of
00:16:02
of bed I didn't want to get out of the
00:16:03
room I just
00:16:06
it was my room was like a cave it was
00:16:09
everything like it was very dark and it
00:16:12
wasn't very you know I had
00:16:15
you know my coach is coming into the
00:16:18
room just trying to
00:16:20
get me out of it and just
00:16:23
I remember we were in a place in Europe
00:16:25
where I didn't want to go out of the
00:16:27
room and just it just dragged me and we
00:16:30
went for brunch but
00:16:32
I did feel better you know getting out
00:16:34
of the room so I felt like oh that might
00:16:37
help me so then I started just going out
00:16:39
for walks and
00:16:40
obviously speaking to my psychologist
00:16:43
really helped me doing the right things
00:16:45
but
00:16:47
yeah it was it was a rough time
00:16:57
top three tips for taking care of myself
00:17:00
is
00:17:01
speaking to my psychologist
00:17:04
having a good meal Greek food
00:17:07
any Greek food is good and a good
00:17:10
night's sleep [Music]
