00:00:00
someone shouted let's bang him and they
00:00:02
all started kicking rob in the head one
00:00:04
of the boys kicked her face so hard it
00:00:07
left a shoe mark imprinted in her skin
00:00:11
sophie had actually hunt her dreadlocks
00:00:14
yanked out
00:00:16
and part of a scalp was missing
00:00:19
when the ambulance arrived they couldn't
00:00:21
recognize who was male and who was
00:00:24
female that's how bad it was
00:00:27
[Applause]
00:00:29
what's your definition of evil a tall
00:00:32
slenderman chasing you through a dark
00:00:34
forest an angry teenager gunning down
00:00:36
his schoolmates what if i told you there
00:00:38
was a group of boys who beat a 20 year
00:00:40
old girl to death just because she
00:00:42
dressed differently this is the truly
00:00:44
upsetting case of sophie lancaster and
00:00:47
her boyfriend robert maulby one day they
00:00:51
lived in a peaceful town the next day
00:00:53
their lives changed forever in the most
00:00:56
tragic way trigger warning this case
00:00:59
discusses mature themes and adult
00:01:02
content this is your chance to turn away
00:01:04
as this case is about to get upsetting
00:01:06
and as outrageous as it can get but if
00:01:08
you're ready for it let's dive into the
00:01:10
case of the girl who was killed for
00:01:12
simply being a goth
00:01:14
[Music]
00:01:18
lancashire is a peaceful county in the
00:01:20
uk it has coastal towns national parks
00:01:23
and quiet villages built on green hills
00:01:26
such is backup a tiny town home to some
00:01:29
13 000 people this is the place where
00:01:31
sophie lancaster grew up sophie was born
00:01:34
on november 26 1986 and lived a fairly
00:01:38
quiet life free from trouble with her
00:01:40
mom sylvia and older siblings
00:01:43
she was a lovely young girl and i'm not
00:01:45
just saying that because i'm a mum
00:01:47
on the one hand she was really quite shy
00:01:49
quite introverted
00:01:51
and yet on the other hand she could be
00:01:54
quite bubbly and quite um chatty
00:01:58
in 2007 sophie had recently graduated
00:02:01
from high school and was enjoying a gap
00:02:03
year she had plans to attend the
00:02:05
akrington and rosendale college to do an
00:02:07
english degree
00:02:09
sophie had been dating her boyfriend
00:02:11
robert for three years and in 2007 rob
00:02:14
was studying art in manchester they were
00:02:16
a pretty solid couple and the thing that
00:02:18
bonded the most was their love for goth
00:02:21
subculture sophie's dad described the
00:02:24
young couple they're both intelligent
00:02:26
sensitive kids they're not the sort of
00:02:29
people to get into trouble but they have
00:02:31
had problems in the past because they
00:02:33
stand out the makeup community is a
00:02:35
close-knit one
00:02:36
in baker the one thing that you will
00:02:38
know is everybody knows everybody and
00:02:40
everybody knows everybody's business
00:02:42
um and as a local journalist i would go
00:02:45
into town on a saturday and i'd get
00:02:47
stopped even though i'd got my children
00:02:49
with me a close knit community is often
00:02:52
quite traditionalist too sophie and rob
00:02:55
had other friends who enjoyed dressing
00:02:56
in the gothic style and that earned them
00:02:59
funny looks sometimes
00:03:01
but people did used to stop actually and
00:03:03
look at her
00:03:04
sometimes she'd be wearing a bit more
00:03:06
girly and sometimes it'd be a bit more
00:03:08
casual than you know
00:03:10
baggy pants but no one was raised to
00:03:12
expect danger in the small town of bake
00:03:15
up but on august 11 2007
00:03:18
the people of bake up were shaken to the
00:03:20
core following a distressing 999 call
00:03:27
at 1 22 a.m on saturday august 11th
00:03:30
emergency services received a horrifying
00:03:33
call
00:03:36
[Music]
00:03:41
[Applause]
00:03:52
this call was coming from stubbley park
00:03:54
sophie and rob had been beaten to a pulp
00:03:57
and were both unconscious
00:04:02
when the ambulance arrived they couldn't
00:04:05
recognize who was male and who was
00:04:07
female that's how bad it was it was a
00:04:10
very serious assault we looked the level
00:04:12
of bleeding the swelling the fact that
00:04:13
we're both unconscious and the fact that
00:04:15
they couldn't really differentiate the
00:04:16
male and female
00:04:19
the police's first step was to identify
00:04:21
the victims searching through their
00:04:23
pockets they found robert's name and
00:04:25
address sophie had no idea or credit
00:04:27
cards on her so the police headed
00:04:29
straight to robert's family they said
00:04:31
robb was most likely heading home with
00:04:33
his girlfriend sophie indeed that's what
00:04:35
happened on the night between august
00:04:37
10th and 11th sophie and rob were just
00:04:39
walking back to rob's place after
00:04:41
visiting a friend's home at a gas stop
00:04:44
rob bought a pack of cigarettes and a
00:04:46
group of five teenage boys befriended
00:04:48
them asking for cigarettes sophie and
00:04:50
rob shared their cigarettes with the
00:04:52
boys then the group followed them into
00:04:53
the park out of nowhere the boys
00:04:55
savagely turned on rob mocking him for
00:04:58
his piercings someone shouted let's bang
00:05:01
him and they all started kicking rob in
00:05:03
the head
00:05:04
sophie kneeled down and held her
00:05:06
boyfriend's lifeless head on her lap as
00:05:08
she cried and begged the boys to stop
00:05:12
instead the boys began to kick her in
00:05:14
the head until she was unconscious too
00:05:16
one of the boys kicked her face so hard
00:05:19
it left a shoe mark imprinted in her
00:05:22
skin but on the morning of august 11th
00:05:25
sophie's mom had no idea what had
00:05:27
happened she went shopping and then went
00:05:29
out to the gym back home you know with
00:05:32
my shopping
00:05:33
um opened the door and picked a card up
00:05:35
you know and it's from the police and
00:05:37
you think oh that's beyond
00:05:39
picked it up and it's a please ring
00:05:41
urgently
00:05:42
so i went to pick the phone up
00:05:44
and when i clicked it on you know there
00:05:46
were 40 messages before sylvia could get
00:05:48
through to the police her older son adam
00:05:51
rang her and told her all about sophie's
00:05:53
attack i said is she okay and he said
00:05:55
yes she's in intensive care she's okay
00:05:57
anything i'm not being funny adam but
00:05:59
you know she's in intensive care she's
00:06:01
not okay
00:06:02
indeed both sophie and rob were in a
00:06:04
coma sylvia could barely recognize her
00:06:08
daughter on the hospital bed her eyes
00:06:10
were badly bruised her face was swollen
00:06:13
and a big chunk of her hair was missing
00:06:17
they'd both been severely kicked by the
00:06:19
head and body
00:06:21
we were aware that
00:06:23
rob had bleeding on the brain and we
00:06:25
were also aware that
00:06:27
sophie had actually had her dreadlocks
00:06:30
yanked out
00:06:32
and part of a scalp was missing
00:06:35
sylvia was pretty sure the physical harm
00:06:36
would heal and she was preparing to
00:06:38
offer sophie the right emotional support
00:06:40
once she woke up unfortunately sylvia
00:06:43
would never speak to her daughter again
00:06:49
with sophie and rob in the rochdale
00:06:51
infirmary hospital the police's priority
00:06:54
was finding the culprits asap
00:06:57
looking for any evidence in stubbley
00:06:59
park they found a rucksack lots of
00:07:01
alcohol bottles and red marks all over
00:07:04
the skate park as no id could have been
00:07:06
gathered from the criminal scene the
00:07:07
police then went door to door asking
00:07:10
people for any relevant clues and
00:07:12
looking for key witnesses but remember
00:07:14
the population of makeup everyone knew
00:07:17
everyone and more than a few people were
00:07:19
covering so
00:07:20
no one was really saying anything
00:07:22
valuable so another scenario there was
00:07:24
actually they knew these offenders
00:07:26
possibly had allegiance to those
00:07:27
offenders who might be within their
00:07:28
wider group so that was a real obstacle
00:07:31
for us to overcome
00:07:32
that's when dci holden the officer
00:07:35
leading the investigation decided to
00:07:37
leave the inquiry in the hands of
00:07:39
younger detectives
00:07:40
the junior officers would end up
00:07:42
building a better rapport with the
00:07:44
locals and some of them started opening
00:07:46
up meanwhile fear and shock were
00:07:49
spreading throughout makeup as people
00:07:51
were learning about last night's
00:07:52
horrifying attack unprovoked brutal and
00:07:56
downright evil my parents were worried
00:07:58
that you know it could happen to
00:08:01
happen to me or my brother or any of my
00:08:03
you know any more of my friends so
00:08:05
i was asked to
00:08:07
tone it down a bit you know but you
00:08:09
shouldn't have to change your style
00:08:10
because of a bunch of evil teenagers
00:08:12
it's they who should change their
00:08:14
behavior
00:08:15
not the victims 24 hours after the
00:08:18
attack the young officers managed to get
00:08:20
names from the other resident teens it
00:08:22
was clear that there were five key
00:08:24
individuals involved in the assault
00:08:25
certainly on robert maltby and probably
00:08:28
involved in the subsequent assault on
00:08:29
sophie lancaster
00:08:31
these were all teenagers between 15 and
00:08:33
17 years old one witness said they were
00:08:36
running over and just keeping her in the
00:08:38
head and jumping up and down on her
00:08:42
another witness who adhered to the
00:08:43
teen's twisted views on goths rang up
00:08:46
999 saying we need an ambulance at bake
00:08:49
up park this mosher has just been banged
00:08:52
because he's a mosher yeah this guy was
00:08:54
blaming the attack on the victims
00:08:56
apparently after sending rob and sophie
00:08:58
to sleep the five teens celebrated their
00:09:01
attack telling friends that they'd done
00:09:03
something good and inviting them to go
00:09:05
see the victims these two moshers nearly
00:09:08
dead in makeup park you want to see them
00:09:09
they're a right mess
00:09:11
finally the police were able to bring
00:09:13
the five boys into custody and news of
00:09:16
their names traveled fast throughout
00:09:18
bacon
00:09:19
by the sunday evening i had all their
00:09:21
names i knew exactly where they lived
00:09:24
and knew that they were trouble makers
00:09:26
by monday morning all five boys were at
00:09:28
the police station being questioned they
00:09:31
all denied conducting a group attack on
00:09:33
the young couple but there were five of
00:09:35
them so not all their stories were in
00:09:37
sync some admitted they were in the park
00:09:40
that night some even said they did hit
00:09:43
rob but only once
00:09:45
as the police also did a background
00:09:47
check on the five they discovered that
00:09:48
sixteen-year-old ryan herbert and
00:09:51
fifteen-year-old brendan harris had a
00:09:53
long history of violence
00:09:56
whilst it was hard to imagine people of
00:09:58
that age being involved in such a
00:10:00
violent assault what we knew certainly
00:10:01
about herbert and harris is that they've
00:10:03
been involved in a very similar incident
00:10:04
whereby they'd kicked and punched
00:10:06
somebody into the ground meanwhile the
00:10:09
forensic team went to the boys homes to
00:10:11
retrieve their clothing from friday
00:10:12
night
00:10:13
immediately they found blood on
00:10:16
herbert's jeans and that went hand in
00:10:18
hand with what some of the other
00:10:20
witnesses had seen some of the boys were
00:10:22
washing something red off their hands
00:10:24
and faces at a hose pipe at the gas
00:10:26
station where they'd initially
00:10:28
befriended rob and sophie unfortunately
00:10:32
none of the local cctv worked the police
00:10:35
still had a long way to go in order to
00:10:37
convict the five boys but as the young
00:10:40
officers continued interrogating the
00:10:43
other local youth it quickly became
00:10:45
certain that those were the five boys
00:10:48
who attacked rob however in sophie's
00:10:50
case the police had to go another way to
00:10:52
prove the boy's involvement dci holden
00:10:54
got a forensic pathologist to visit
00:10:57
sophie in the hospital
00:10:59
what is the case is that medical
00:11:00
practitioners at hospitals can give
00:11:02
expert advice on what the injuries are
00:11:04
whereas a pathologist can actually give
00:11:06
experts advice on how those injuries
00:11:07
might have been caused a pathologist
00:11:09
quickly concluded that sophie's head was
00:11:11
kicked by at least two people
00:11:16
around that time rob came out of the
00:11:18
coma making very slow recovery and
00:11:21
remembering nothing from the night of
00:11:23
the attack but not the same could be
00:11:25
said about sophie her condition was
00:11:27
deteriorating every single day on august
00:11:30
21st 10 days after the attack she was
00:11:33
given a brain scan
00:11:35
we heard the news that they'd done um a
00:11:38
brain test on sophie and that there
00:11:42
wasn't any activity
00:11:45
and
00:11:46
then you know it's
00:11:48
you know it's serious
00:11:51
sophie was never going to regain
00:11:53
consciousness so her family had to make
00:11:55
the toughest decision one could ever
00:11:58
make pulling the plug on their
00:12:00
daughter's life support
00:12:04
they pulled the curtains around
00:12:06
anyway the first time you know
00:12:09
[Music]
00:12:13
it's even
00:12:15
the first time that you can hold them
00:12:18
because they've got so many things on
00:12:20
you can't even hold them
00:12:23
a minute later sophie died
00:12:26
[Music]
00:12:28
when sophie passed away and we learned
00:12:30
that she had died the big change for us
00:12:32
is that it was no longer just an assault
00:12:34
investigation it was a murder
00:12:36
investigation the police were more
00:12:38
determined than ever to convict the five
00:12:41
boys for their heinous deeds murder
00:12:44
could mean life in prison so this
00:12:47
motivated the boys who did less to speak
00:12:49
against each other and distance
00:12:51
themselves from the deed
00:12:53
the account that we got from brendan
00:12:55
harris was that the assault on silver
00:12:56
lancaster was completely down to ryan
00:12:58
herbert the boy's stories matched the
00:13:00
forensic evidence herbert had by far the
00:13:03
most evidence on his clothes holden said
00:13:05
the clothes looked as if he'd been
00:13:07
stomping in pools of red paint both
00:13:10
herbert and harris were in juvenile
00:13:12
prison and the police were now
00:13:13
monitoring herbert's calls before long
00:13:16
they got enough evidence of his
00:13:17
involvement in sophie's murder while
00:13:19
herbert was talking to his mom his
00:13:21
mother was saying to him that even
00:13:22
though sophie lancaster's dad had
00:13:24
nothing to worry about
00:13:25
if he wasn't involved to which he
00:13:27
responded well i was
00:13:29
on the way to the trial the police
00:13:30
bugged their van and heard herbert brag
00:13:32
to harris how he kicked sophie's head
00:13:35
like a football not only was he
00:13:37
remorseless
00:13:38
he was proud on september 6 2007 all
00:13:42
five boys were charged with the murder
00:13:44
of sophie lancaster
00:13:48
in early november rob was finally well
00:13:51
enough to leave the hospital room that
00:13:53
month he joined sophie's family in
00:13:55
saying goodbye to her but everyone else
00:13:57
was at her funeral the bake up locals
00:13:59
and even tv crews this proved extra
00:14:02
painful for rob who was just coming to
00:14:05
terms with losing his girlfriend in the
00:14:07
most horrific way when i saw the coffin
00:14:10
that was when he when it kind of hit me
00:14:12
it was like
00:14:13
that's too small
00:14:15
i was resentful of the fact so many
00:14:17
people were there they had the best
00:14:19
intentions but i was thinking
00:14:21
did you ever eat a meal with her do you
00:14:23
know how she took her coffee while rob
00:14:25
worked hard to recover from his worst
00:14:27
nightmare the police were still working
00:14:30
to give the five teens the punishment
00:14:32
they deserved herbert's defense team
00:14:34
argued that they should only be charged
00:14:36
with manslaughter as he was autistic but
00:14:38
this proved to be one big lie got a very
00:14:42
renowned national and international
00:14:44
expert on autism who actually came to
00:14:46
lancashire prior to the trial and did a
00:14:48
real assessment of him
00:14:50
and her assessment was that he wasn't
00:14:51
autistic in march 2008 the boys trial
00:14:54
finally began it was a tough experience
00:14:56
for sophie and rob's families who had to
00:14:58
face their criminals families to
00:15:01
everyone's shock herbert admitted on the
00:15:02
first day that he was responsible for
00:15:04
the death of sophie this let the other
00:15:07
three boys bar harris off the hook in
00:15:09
the case of sophie's murder herbert's
00:15:12
admission and play diluted the evidence
00:15:15
against them and what their defence team
00:15:17
were arguing is that this is two
00:15:18
separate incidents their clients were
00:15:20
involved in the first incident but they
00:15:21
weren't involved in the second incident
00:15:23
this wasn't exactly what the police
00:15:25
wanted after all the boys all
00:15:27
participated in kicking both rob and
00:15:29
sophie and not one of them stopped until
00:15:31
they were both unconscious as scrutiny
00:15:34
now fell on harris he argued that
00:15:36
herbert had the idea of kicking sophie
00:15:38
and that he even commented that they
00:15:40
should end her as she's a witness but
00:15:42
there were witness testimonies and the
00:15:44
pathologist's report that said sophie
00:15:46
was kicked by at least two persons by
00:15:50
march 27 2008 both herbert and harris
00:15:53
were serving life in prison the judge
00:15:56
described their attack as feral thuggery
00:15:59
and said
00:16:00
at least wild animals when they hunt in
00:16:02
packs have legitimate reason for doing
00:16:05
so to obtain food
00:16:07
you have none
00:16:08
and your behavior on that night degrades
00:16:10
humanity itself the other three boys
00:16:13
brothers joseph and danny holm and
00:16:16
daniel mallett pleaded guilty to
00:16:18
grievous bodily harm with intent on rob
00:16:21
they were given between four and five
00:16:23
years in jail each
00:16:25
[Music]
00:16:28
sophie and rob's tragic experience
00:16:30
happened during a time with lots of
00:16:33
unconnected crimes throughout the uk
00:16:35
all done by heavy drinking teenage boys
00:16:38
the sun even launched a campaign called
00:16:41
broken britain which david cameron
00:16:43
backed in an attempt to stop these
00:16:45
heinous attacks
00:16:46
teenagers with nothing to lose whose
00:16:48
ignorance or violent behavior is
00:16:50
rampaging unchecked and creating a moral
00:16:54
vacuum
00:16:55
interviewed 10 years after the event rob
00:16:58
knows it shouldn't be sophie's goth
00:17:00
style that stands as a motive for the
00:17:02
murder and looks down on all journalists
00:17:05
victim blaming sophie it was always like
00:17:07
sophie lancaster was killed because she
00:17:09
was a goth no she wasn't she was killed
00:17:12
because some apples killed her why can't
00:17:14
we ask what it is about them that made
00:17:16
them want to murder someone not what is
00:17:19
it about someone that made them be
00:17:20
murdered rob found it very hard to heal
00:17:23
from the wounds that the five boys left
00:17:25
physically and mentally losing his loved
00:17:28
one then watching as the whole town
00:17:30
became hateful and fearful of other
00:17:33
attacks was no easy task but today he
00:17:36
even found the strength to pity the
00:17:38
criminals saying that in poor areas with
00:17:40
little progress people will often turn
00:17:42
to drinking and violence as that is the
00:17:44
model they see at home
00:17:46
these areas are still forgotten and
00:17:48
forgotten people will feel like well it
00:17:50
can breed nihilism i've never tried to
00:17:53
demonize the attackers and in many ways
00:17:55
they were victims sylvia set up a
00:17:58
charity in sophie's memory to eliminate
00:18:00
hate crimes and prejudice against
00:18:02
alternative subcultures sophie's friends
00:18:04
and family remember her every day while
00:18:07
they battle prejudice around the world
00:18:09
and that is the truly upsetting case of
00:18:11
sophie lancaster and robert maltby
