00:00:00
what's the catchy phrase today dads and
00:00:02
grads right a ton of phone calls into
00:00:04
the office in regards to a what do I get
00:00:07
as a gift for Dad what do I get as a
00:00:09
gift for someone that's graduating high
00:00:11
school college Masters maybe even
00:00:14
doctorates right and that's what we're
00:00:16
going to discuss today here joining me
00:00:18
is Adrian I face you pretty familiar
00:00:21
with and brought a bunch of things to
00:00:23
show as an example and I want to start
00:00:25
the conversation off by some general
00:00:27
Topics in regards to this thing and that
00:00:30
is obviously we will go through the most
00:00:34
popular most requested most bought right
00:00:36
but at the same token I want to go into
00:00:39
Alternatives in regards to the most
00:00:41
bought I want to discuss things like hey
00:00:44
how often does one even consider or
00:00:46
think about that this is a gift that's
00:00:48
most likely not going to be resold it's
00:00:51
going to last forever on top of that
00:00:52
passed on to a different generation and
00:00:54
last but not least the the big thing in
00:00:57
between choosing a pre-owned watch
00:00:59
versus a brand new watch for a gift that
00:01:01
always people tend to be a sticker
00:01:03
saying well this is a gift it must be
00:01:04
brand new well in reality it really
00:01:06
doesn't I guess we should start off with
00:01:09
you were a fairly recent grad certainly
00:01:12
a lot more recent than I am uh you know
00:01:14
that recent anymore yeah well not that
00:01:16
recent anymore when you were graduating
00:01:17
high school was there a glimpse or
00:01:20
something that you would hope for as a
00:01:22
gift graduating high school in regards
00:01:24
to a watch or were you more of a car guy
00:01:26
I was more of just don't get in trouble
00:01:27
and do the right thing guy but
00:01:29
nevertheless I did get a brightening
00:01:31
chronomat Evolution when I graduated
00:01:33
high school and at the time in 2009 it
00:01:35
was Breitling was was it right not that
00:01:38
it's not it anymore but back in the day
00:01:39
that was the watch to have so when I got
00:01:41
that blue dial that was like that was it
00:01:44
that was pretty much my introduction
00:01:46
into watches and then I started selling
00:01:47
watches not too long after that so I
00:01:50
gotta say it's probably one of the gifts
00:01:51
that is the most memorable for me and I
00:01:54
think that seems to be the path for
00:01:56
anybody who receives their first you
00:01:58
know luxury watch how much wear time
00:02:00
does your Breitling get today oh that's
00:02:03
I I forget what I did with that watch I
00:02:05
think I gifted it to somebody which is
00:02:07
which is also not really something that
00:02:09
we that people do anymore but uh doesn't
00:02:14
get anywhere because it's no longer in
00:02:15
my possession see and that's going to
00:02:18
bring up a point we're going to discuss
00:02:19
later now uh when I was graduating high
00:02:21
school back in 1962
00:02:23
it was my family was not in the position
00:02:26
to give me a big watch my family was not
00:02:28
in the position to really give me
00:02:29
anything right and one of the things
00:02:32
that I ended up with is years later post
00:02:35
the military really was a Rolex that I
00:02:38
bought myself for about 1500 bucks at a
00:02:41
pawn shop in Atlantic City it was an old
00:02:44
they just that beat the crap etc etc
00:02:47
which I also don't have anymore didn't
00:02:49
really have a big meaning to me because
00:02:50
for me it was just a flex at the time
00:02:52
but let's talk about I mean I have a
00:02:54
grad at home who graduated a year ago uh
00:02:58
actually well it's going to be two years
00:03:00
and what I ended up getting Marcus was
00:03:03
at Royal Oak in stainless steel at the
00:03:05
time those watch was trading for some
00:03:07
ridiculous amount of money I think it
00:03:09
was up there in the 70s and 80s it was a
00:03:12
blue dial Royal Oak of course through my
00:03:13
connections through a friend I ended up
00:03:15
getting this watch at least so I didn't
00:03:17
pay eighty thousand dollars for my son's
00:03:18
gift I paid a lot less and the idea
00:03:21
behind it was for me anyway is here's a
00:03:25
kid who's been on his own since he was
00:03:26
15 years old uh made money and has been
00:03:30
financially independent since he was 15
00:03:31
years old at the age of 16 he bought
00:03:33
himself a Rolex so he's already had a
00:03:36
fancy watch and I said you know well how
00:03:37
do I make something that's memorable and
00:03:40
I based the criteria based on the kind
00:03:42
of person he is Marcus is actually a lot
00:03:44
more humble than I am Marcus is a lot
00:03:46
more practical than I am and I knew that
00:03:49
it was going to take a whole lot of time
00:03:50
until Marcus would put himself in the
00:03:52
watch of that stature sort of that next
00:03:53
level watch right and I said to myself
00:03:57
at the time I bought him the watch is
00:03:59
this a watch he can afford himself and
00:04:00
the answer was yes is this a watcher to
00:04:03
spend money on or that kind of money on
00:04:05
the answer was no and I said you know
00:04:06
what considering that the fact that the
00:04:09
kid graduated uh with a 4.23 GPA got
00:04:12
into every single school he took he
00:04:14
applied to and he did well on a personal
00:04:17
level in the business level educational
00:04:19
level you know just all-around great kid
00:04:21
I've felt that it was well deserved now
00:04:25
after I give them this watch he was
00:04:27
actually taken back through this
00:04:28
conservative nature but obviously he did
00:04:30
love the gift and I know that that's a
00:04:32
watch that's never going to be sold
00:04:34
because of how much meaning is behind
00:04:35
and what was said when I gave him the
00:04:37
watch etc etc so that was my gift to my
00:04:40
son and I know you gifted your wife
00:04:43
something oh we me and Jess started
00:04:45
dating after she graduated college so
00:04:47
there was no graduation type gift but
00:04:49
she was never really won four watches or
00:04:51
jewelry she likes her bags she likes her
00:04:53
clothes she likes this but she did one
00:04:55
for I did get her the most recent
00:04:57
purchase probably push present she
00:04:59
wanted Tiffany op Rolex which I got her
00:05:02
and she never takes that watch but I
00:05:03
think your decision was strictly based
00:05:05
on the fashion end of things right I was
00:05:07
like they had accessory to have I don't
00:05:09
think Jess is really into like oh my God
00:05:10
this is a super rare Rolex just
00:05:12
discontinued it I like this dial it's a
00:05:15
Rolex I have Rolex I have this and that
00:05:18
that's exactly what she went for and she
00:05:19
never took it off so let's back up a
00:05:21
second so uh our team wrote a pretty
00:05:24
nice simple article called best luxury
00:05:27
graduation gift watches right that's on
00:05:29
the great Market magazine if you guys
00:05:30
haven't checked that out definitely do
00:05:32
lots of good information lots of good
00:05:34
articles on there and it simply runs
00:05:36
through what I would call the go-to's
00:05:39
right get into a something that's under
00:05:41
four thousand dollars people will reach
00:05:43
usually full attack Hoyer because it's
00:05:45
within that price range that's
00:05:46
affordable that still makes a statement
00:05:48
tacos still a humongous name uh they're
00:05:52
sponsors of Red Bull F1 racing you know
00:05:54
you see tackle plastic everywhere and
00:05:57
the reason they're so big and the reason
00:05:58
they're so popular is because you're
00:06:00
just getting past sort of that
00:06:04
fashion brands sort of that a little bit
00:06:07
of an upper echelon Brands like a Tissot
00:06:09
right and now you're getting into like a
00:06:12
real what people will consider like a
00:06:13
real high-end Swiss watch and that's
00:06:15
where Tech work comes in with a slew of
00:06:17
models uh Carrera is probably a good one
00:06:20
to mention uh it's gonna it's gonna set
00:06:22
you back two to three thousand dollars
00:06:24
and it certainly is a good gift to go
00:06:27
with then you jump up to let's see the
00:06:29
article jumps into you know something
00:06:31
that's you know around that five to six
00:06:33
thousand dollar range and that's when
00:06:35
you get into things like Cartier Santos
00:06:37
that's when you get into things like
00:06:38
two-door right so IWC I think the black
00:06:42
Bay is the one watched to mention that
00:06:45
is probably most asked for it comes with
00:06:47
a slew up bezels that the blues got the
00:06:48
black that's got the red and it has the
00:06:51
look and it has now what we'd like to
00:06:53
say recognizability right as the flex
00:06:56
factor to it the Cartier Santos such as
00:06:59
this one or this even this black one on
00:07:01
a rubber strap these are the guys that
00:07:03
somebody's going to see it on the wrist
00:07:05
and they're going to recognize it now
00:07:06
that works because you're giving this to
00:07:09
a young individual and flex culture is
00:07:11
important especially you know in young
00:07:14
people they want to get out there
00:07:15
whether they're heading off to college
00:07:16
or they're heading off to their
00:07:17
Workforce and they want to show that hey
00:07:19
I have a watch I have the watch on my
00:07:21
wrist right like a timepiece rather than
00:07:23
just you know something coarse that
00:07:25
tells time if you will because people
00:07:27
pay attention to that whether you're
00:07:29
going into college or whether you're
00:07:30
going into
00:07:31
um grad school or out into the workforce
00:07:34
well one thing that we didn't mention
00:07:36
which I think was most important was
00:07:37
Omega speedy speedy speedies are
00:07:39
speeding are well under eight thousand
00:07:40
dollars because you get speedies under
00:07:42
five thousand dollars depending if
00:07:43
they're new if they're pre-owned you
00:07:44
know if we're strictly talking new you
00:07:46
know you're paying up for them but an
00:07:48
Omega Speedy the number one seller in
00:07:51
that price range when it comes to
00:07:52
gifting right whether it's Father's day
00:07:54
whether it's graduation gift because
00:07:55
that is one of the most iconic top 10
00:07:57
iconic Watchers out there for me and
00:07:59
people certainly reach for that so
00:08:01
that's a no-brainer you know we're kind
00:08:03
of being obvious here right and I'm
00:08:05
going to get into some Alternatives in a
00:08:06
second then you jump up on price a
00:08:08
little bit you get into the Rolex Ops
00:08:10
you get into the Rolex submariners you
00:08:12
get into the Explorers you get into the
00:08:13
datejust 41 millimeters and things of
00:08:15
that nature no Gauss middle gausses and
00:08:18
you start jumping into that 10 to 15 to
00:08:21
20 000 operations you start looking at
00:08:23
things like maybe basharons right you're
00:08:24
not quite there for Paddock and Audemars
00:08:26
be gay but here's an overseas black dial
00:08:28
the latest and greatest version
00:08:30
one of the things that people tend to
00:08:32
overlook and both parents or the gifters
00:08:36
I should say they fall into the hype and
00:08:39
they fall into the hype of what they see
00:08:40
where mostly social media you type in
00:08:44
hashtag watches into Instagram today
00:08:45
what are you gonna get Rolex AP Richard
00:08:49
meal Paddock right and then you're going
00:08:51
to get into some of the alternative
00:08:53
brands or other brands that have been
00:08:54
out there so my thing is
00:08:57
let me reiterate and I've said this
00:08:58
multiple times when people call me and
00:09:00
they say I'm looking for a particular
00:09:01
watch and I ask them what's your purpose
00:09:03
or what's the driving Factor what's the
00:09:05
motivation I hope they answer me
00:09:06
honestly and say that hey Flex is very
00:09:09
important to me and if that's the case
00:09:10
if that's the thinking behind it think
00:09:13
about hey is my child or my husband want
00:09:17
to show off this watch or is he more of
00:09:20
a low-key person right because Flex is
00:09:22
really a big deciding factor and if
00:09:24
that's the deciding factor don't even
00:09:25
bother looking at Alternatives yeah
00:09:26
we're talking we're talking person
00:09:28
personality is key here right because
00:09:29
every single individual has a different
00:09:31
personality so although Rolex is the
00:09:33
most recognizable obviously Choice
00:09:35
number one for a gift for somebody else
00:09:37
or for yourself
00:09:39
you kind of have to identify the
00:09:40
individual does that individual play
00:09:42
sports is he a utility guy does he die
00:09:45
does he you know what does he do is he a
00:09:46
pilot right there's a lot of a lot of
00:09:48
different factors which actually leads
00:09:50
people into making the wrong decision
00:09:52
because they go for what's recognizable
00:09:54
they go for what their neighbors were
00:09:55
and they go for what their friends are
00:09:56
wearing without really really digging
00:09:59
deep into who they're purchasing the
00:10:01
gift for and to flip that around
00:10:03
somebody that's graduated college for
00:10:06
example is getting ready to go into the
00:10:08
workforce think from the perspective of
00:10:11
how that individual will be looked at
00:10:13
when they walk into that office here's a
00:10:15
fresh guy out there you know starting a
00:10:18
salary forty five thousand dollars a
00:10:19
year and he walks in with a ten thousand
00:10:22
dollar watch or fifteen thousand dollar
00:10:23
watch that's Uber recognizable that's
00:10:25
another thing you know is your child for
00:10:27
example going to be comfortable wearing
00:10:29
such an expensive watch going into the
00:10:30
office right where he may find himself
00:10:33
walking in
00:10:34
to an environment where his boss is
00:10:36
wearing a Casio and here he comes in
00:10:39
wearing a twenty thousand dollar
00:10:40
astronaut right it's it's it's also as
00:10:43
bad as that sounds I've lived that when
00:10:45
I was in a corporate world right because
00:10:47
I got into watches while I was still
00:10:48
working at the bank and I would show up
00:10:50
at work wearing gold Rolex and people
00:10:52
would actually look at me funny like
00:10:53
what the [ __ ] is this guy right like
00:10:55
what does he get off coming and wearing
00:10:56
these expensive ones probably knows what
00:10:58
he's doing exactly or I remember one
00:11:00
time I pulled up to a Christmas party
00:11:01
and my boss at the time is in a driveway
00:11:04
with my uh my team members he just
00:11:08
bought himself a brand spanking new Ford
00:11:11
Escape and I hear him going over the
00:11:13
features of this brand new vehicle that
00:11:15
he purchased and I pulled up in a brand
00:11:17
new BMW X5 that was not a good look
00:11:19
let's just say my bonus suffered at the
00:11:21
end of that year you know what I mean
00:11:22
it's it's as terrible as it sounds but
00:11:24
that's again maybe the corporate
00:11:25
culture's changed since I've been in it
00:11:27
but uh and we don't really have
00:11:29
corporate politics here but I don't know
00:11:31
I don't know I don't think that went off
00:11:32
uh too well but let's let's talk about
00:11:35
new verses used right big myth in
00:11:39
regards to wow if I'm gifting something
00:11:41
I it's got to be brand new
00:11:44
false plenty of clients have bought
00:11:46
pre-owned pieces from us and we're uber
00:11:50
happy with them because when they got
00:11:51
them I was like oh my god well this
00:11:52
watch looks new well again I can only
00:11:54
speak for myself and a handful of other
00:11:56
dealers that I do business with that are
00:11:57
in the same space like watchbox for
00:12:00
example if you buy a watch from watchbox
00:12:02
or us and it's a good reason watch it
00:12:04
comes in it looks brand Spanky new
00:12:05
because we will not
00:12:07
take a watch out there with scratches
00:12:10
with blemishes or anything of that
00:12:12
nature when a pre-owned watch comes in
00:12:14
what do we do unless it's unless it's
00:12:15
vintage you know unless it's yeah I was
00:12:17
going to say the activity of the watch
00:12:18
yeah if it's if it's a vintage piece if
00:12:20
it's something that has a retro look
00:12:21
even even Neo vintage pieces things of
00:12:24
that nature that's not something we're
00:12:25
going to mess with we're going to keep
00:12:26
that look but then again even with some
00:12:28
of the new vintage stuff like some of
00:12:30
the older two-tone Subs like like this
00:12:32
guy for example right we're still gonna
00:12:35
that's the new one we're still you'll
00:12:37
notice there's green plastic on here
00:12:38
right that's because this watch was
00:12:40
polished that's because this watch was
00:12:42
serviced internally so once I take all
00:12:43
this plastic off the watch will still
00:12:44
look brand new with the real real
00:12:47
vintage stuff that stuff that you don't
00:12:48
want to mess with in fact like you said
00:12:50
it takes away from Integrity so the myth
00:12:52
of buying new and versus pre-owned for a
00:12:55
gift and again not saying that if you're
00:12:58
a stickler something being brand
00:12:59
spanking you with tags and stickers as
00:13:01
it came from the store fine but if
00:13:03
you're working with a budget oftentimes
00:13:05
by going to pre-owned route what happens
00:13:07
you're able to get more watch for your
00:13:10
dollar right and especially in today's
00:13:13
crazy world of Rolex right you get into
00:13:15
some of these Rolexes for example what's
00:13:18
a brand new Daytona like this gonna run
00:13:19
so black dial is going to run you just
00:13:21
north of 30 000 where this is a
00:13:24
pre-owned obviously this thing has been
00:13:25
polished and taken care of and it looks
00:13:27
new what does this run so again it's
00:13:29
gonna it's gonna be a difference of
00:13:30
about 10 right so on a purchase of that
00:13:33
magnitude that 10 could exactly so if
00:13:36
you you want to stick to that 25 000
00:13:37
price range right you can still get that
00:13:40
Daytona it's still not Out Of Reach you
00:13:42
just go the pre-owned route now money is
00:13:44
the biggest advantage and the second
00:13:46
biggest Advantage as I said earlier is
00:13:48
more bang for your dollar because you
00:13:50
get into that 25 000 price range
00:13:54
believe it or not you can get it Patek
00:13:56
Philly right you can get uh let's say
00:13:58
something like this a 50 35 annual
00:14:00
calendar right which is in those mid-20s
00:14:02
range and there's a slew of other annual
00:14:05
calendars from Paddock or some color
00:14:07
Travis that you can get into on a
00:14:08
secondary that are no longer made it's
00:14:10
still a Patek Philippe it makes a
00:14:13
statement you know it's just a question
00:14:15
of again going back to what you said the
00:14:17
individual right who is this individual
00:14:19
and then in a case where a Patek
00:14:21
Philippe may be a little much and but
00:14:24
you still want to get somebody a gold
00:14:26
watch there's a slew of options like I
00:14:27
brought this Roger doobie right it's a
00:14:29
full Perpetual account they're talking
00:14:31
about getting banged for you a dollar
00:14:32
right it's a it's a limited edition I
00:14:34
think they made 88 of these so 28 no 28
00:14:36
of these right it's a retrograde
00:14:38
Perpetual account there's something that
00:14:39
most people want to recognize what it is
00:14:41
but at the same token if the person
00:14:43
you're buying this for he's a real
00:14:45
horological not if you will he'll get it
00:14:48
and and we're talking generally speaking
00:14:51
and we we've had during Father's Day a
00:14:54
or pre or before fathers that we've had
00:14:56
individuals that are into watches and
00:14:59
orology nuts and we'll buy something
00:15:01
like that for their father because they
00:15:03
understand what it is they understand
00:15:04
the product right so that that's
00:15:06
primarily what we're talking about here
00:15:07
I'll never forget the one time years ago
00:15:10
when I first started this business you
00:15:11
sold a grand complication protect Felipe
00:15:13
to a gentleman that was buying it for
00:15:14
his father you remember that yes I do so
00:15:17
you know it's it's very rare that you
00:15:19
get something like that for the most
00:15:20
part for Father's Day you're going to
00:15:22
get something that's that's better socks
00:15:24
and attack yes or whatever the case may
00:15:27
be but yeah there there's so many
00:15:28
different options out here I mean
00:15:30
especially if you're buying a gift birth
00:15:32
year watches are a big thing right if
00:15:34
there's no worse thing ever it can be
00:15:37
one of the worst things ever but it's
00:15:38
also very fun you know if you get if you
00:15:40
get a let's say Daytona from 1980s or
00:15:44
1990s and and you're able to provide
00:15:46
that with all of its original components
00:15:48
for a birthday or for some type of
00:15:49
commemoration for uh uh for the father
00:15:52
or a son I think that that's one of my
00:15:54
favorite things one of the things that
00:15:56
the reason I just mentioned that it's
00:15:57
the worst uh ever it's the worst ever
00:16:00
for us as dealers when people call in
00:16:01
and say I need a birth year watch a
00:16:03
difficult Mission like it's a difficult
00:16:04
mission for many reasons for the most
00:16:06
part nine out of ten times it's usually
00:16:07
a Rolex right oh for sure and when
00:16:10
you're talking about Rolexes okay well
00:16:13
what's the year is it the serial number
00:16:14
is it on the paper is it what's on the
00:16:16
papers yeah now you now are you okay
00:16:18
getting a watch with no papers are you
00:16:20
okay getting what do you want to watch
00:16:21
it's a full set and everybody usually
00:16:23
wants the full set and nine out of 10
00:16:25
times in that date range remember that's
00:16:27
not the times where Rolex just flew out
00:16:29
the window there was a waiting list
00:16:30
that's the time when you walked into the
00:16:32
store there was a hundred to choose from
00:16:33
right and they were discounted even so
00:16:35
you're looking at a Rolex Submariner
00:16:37
let's say from the 80s and well
00:16:40
according to the serial number it's this
00:16:42
but according to the papers it's this
00:16:43
because it was sold a year later or two
00:16:45
years like sometimes three years later
00:16:46
so it becomes like oh well what do you
00:16:49
want and then you say well I want both
00:16:51
to match now I'm out there looking for a
00:16:53
vintage watch with papers that match the
00:16:55
serial number year I mean and at the
00:16:58
same token because it's now most likely
00:17:00
vintage I have to try to find a prime
00:17:02
example which makes it a nightmare for
00:17:04
guys like us because it's almost
00:17:05
impossible to do so you end up chasing
00:17:07
your tail you find the watch but then
00:17:09
the watch is not in the condition and
00:17:10
you end up paying for the birth year and
00:17:12
the watch is not worth the money
00:17:14
big nightmare I want to switch gears to
00:17:17
some of the other Alternatives that are
00:17:19
out there right so let's see what are
00:17:21
that I'm going to pick my favorite
00:17:22
please my favorite alternative please
00:17:24
that would be because there's a range of
00:17:26
of pricing but I would say sub 20 000
00:17:30
above five thousand Bulgaria
00:17:35
well here's the cheaper version here's
00:17:38
probably my favorite watch under twenty
00:17:40
thousand pretty much almost on the
00:17:42
market that's the Phoenician most
00:17:43
skeleton in ceramic I love that watch
00:17:45
and I like to finish I like to finish
00:17:46
him uh align the newer so here's the
00:17:49
older phoeniximal line a little bit on
00:17:51
the bulkier side heavier side heavier
00:17:52
bracelet heavier case right bigger size
00:17:55
right and then you know as of late they
00:17:57
did the finisimo which is the thinner
00:17:59
the ultra the ultra thin and this thing
00:18:02
comes in many versions it comes in an
00:18:03
automatic comes in a chronograph and I
00:18:05
will agree that the skeleton is indeed
00:18:07
my favorite it's it's an Uber light
00:18:08
watch made out of titanium it's
00:18:10
extremely comfortable oddly enough as
00:18:12
thin as it wears big on a wrist and I
00:18:15
think would you agree to say that the
00:18:18
Bulgari after Phoenician online is
00:18:20
slowly crawled its way into the likes of
00:18:24
Gibbs like the Rolex like the two doors
00:18:26
like the omegas I think they're doing a
00:18:29
much better job right now versus before
00:18:31
in regards to marketing you know we
00:18:33
follow social media so heavily and we
00:18:35
see the likes of maluma you know one of
00:18:38
the biggest artists in the world he's
00:18:40
wearing a octophonismo one in the video
00:18:42
that got billions of views right and
00:18:44
you're seeing this coming to the
00:18:46
Forefront more often and people are
00:18:47
really getting understanding that hey
00:18:48
this is not necessarily a jewelry
00:18:50
company they do some kick-ass stuff or
00:18:52
logically and people are getting that
00:18:53
they love the thin case the the thin
00:18:56
profiles of it how unique it is skeleton
00:18:58
eyes and it's just a great value you can
00:19:00
still pick them up under retail
00:19:02
but I would say that's shrinking that
00:19:04
retail versus discount it is
00:19:06
indeed shrinking I think and I think
00:19:08
that the lvmh is only getting started
00:19:10
with Bulgaria I think we're going to see
00:19:11
a lot of cool new things from them
00:19:12
experimentation with materials uh you
00:19:15
know there's going to be a lot of cool
00:19:17
stuff coming down from Bulgari so I
00:19:19
would definitely pay attention to the
00:19:21
brand because I think aesthetically it's
00:19:23
one of the most beautiful watches out so
00:19:25
cool absolutely what I actually brought
00:19:28
is I I swung over to this watch group
00:19:31
right and I asked myself okay tutor you
00:19:34
know Rolex and things of that nature
00:19:37
what are those what are the Alternatives
00:19:38
there and I went with first of all a
00:19:42
brand that's near dear to my heart a
00:19:43
watchmakers watchmaker Diego culture
00:19:45
today and again this is a pre-owned
00:19:48
Master compressor dual time and with the
00:19:50
massive compressor line and not
00:19:51
necessarily this watch but pretty much
00:19:53
anything from this line you can pick
00:19:54
these things up sub ten thousand dollars
00:19:57
depending on the variation of
00:19:58
complication again mind you this is a
00:20:00
watch that was pre-owned at one time now
00:20:02
it looks brand new because it's been
00:20:04
polished brand new strap et cetera Etc
00:20:05
and again this is a good alternative for
00:20:08
a gift this is more of a rugged watch a
00:20:10
watch tested over a thousand hours their
00:20:13
Master Control series is when they test
00:20:14
each watch over a thousand hours which
00:20:16
is a very vigorous test for watch if you
00:20:18
think about it thousand hours you know
00:20:20
do the math it's a lot of time within
00:20:22
Jaeger you know some of their newer
00:20:24
stuff that they've been doing is so
00:20:25
close like it's so Timeless and this is
00:20:27
what I wanted to mention is another
00:20:29
thing that you need to discuss when
00:20:31
you're talking about gifting something
00:20:32
to someone percentage-wise I would say
00:20:34
90 of the time or eighty percent of the
00:20:37
time a watch that's gifted for
00:20:38
graduation or or uh you know to Dad it's
00:20:43
not getting resold so you got to think
00:20:45
long term you got to think long term hey
00:20:46
this is a watch somebody's going to have
00:20:48
pretty much forever how do you come to
00:20:50
figure out you know hey is this watch
00:20:53
classic enough to stand the test of time
00:20:56
and I tend to go backwards obviously
00:20:58
with Rolex and Omega it's an obvious
00:20:59
answer they've been around for a long
00:21:01
long time well the master compressor
00:21:03
series from Jaeger has been around for
00:21:05
probably 20 years but when you get into
00:21:07
the classic lines from eager with pieces
00:21:10
such as this one or this perpetual
00:21:12
calendar from Jaeger you can say well
00:21:15
this has lasted a ton longer and it's
00:21:18
going to be around a ton longer or to
00:21:19
switch over to IWC one of my favorite
00:21:21
Brands the Portuguese this is one of the
00:21:24
most timeless designs just a hundred
00:21:26
years old so it kind of gives you a good
00:21:28
Testament to a this is going to stick
00:21:30
around unlike
00:21:32
for example this is the old Raja dubi
00:21:34
you know before they were bought over by
00:21:36
the Richmond right I don't think we'll
00:21:37
ever see this ever again because now
00:21:39
they're bigger more modern very very
00:21:42
sporty with their car lines and things
00:21:44
of that nature so one brand that
00:21:46
completely did a 180 in terms of what
00:21:48
they use yeah or 180 180 is not even a
00:21:50
question it's hard to even identify them
00:21:52
as the same brand right I think I think
00:21:54
one of the most important things to
00:21:55
point out
00:21:56
anytime it comes to purchasing a gift
00:21:59
whether it's a watch or anything else
00:22:00
for somebody out for somebody else is
00:22:03
the use Factor because one of the things
00:22:05
you always run into is will this person
00:22:07
get use out of this watch am I buying a
00:22:10
gift just to say hey it's a watch I got
00:22:12
something expensive I got you an
00:22:13
expensive gift or will they use it and
00:22:15
that is the absolute key here in making
00:22:17
a decision when you're buying a watch
00:22:18
for somebody that happens fairly often
00:22:20
right and what ends up happening is
00:22:22
here's a person that received that gift
00:22:25
the watch is setting their shelf is not
00:22:27
getting anywhere time but then they feel
00:22:28
bad
00:22:29
trading it in or trading it up for
00:22:31
something because it's a Sentimental
00:22:32
thing right but they won't be caught
00:22:34
dead wearing something like that so I
00:22:36
had I had a just just a quick story so
00:22:38
we had a customer that I've been working
00:22:40
with for many many years and he
00:22:42
purchased the tune of millions of
00:22:44
dollars let's say for himself and he
00:22:46
wanted to get his dad something for it
00:22:48
was either Father's Day or birthday so
00:22:50
he bought him a padded gondola
00:22:51
at the time and uh 5200g blue I remember
00:22:55
and as in conversation I'm always asking
00:22:59
him about his father's watch how does he
00:23:01
like he goes man he never wears it he
00:23:04
goes I got him this watch
00:23:06
but he never wears it watches just
00:23:07
aren't his thing now on the flip side I
00:23:10
had a gentleman buy something for his
00:23:12
wife who was never into watches and now
00:23:14
she buys watches on the regular right so
00:23:16
two one one of two things can happen
00:23:18
it's very it's very interesting and
00:23:19
unique to see that you know how how so
00:23:22
let's so let's so let's bullet point
00:23:24
this first and foremost start with a is
00:23:26
the person you're buying a watch for a
00:23:28
watch Person yep the most important the
00:23:30
most important right
00:23:32
you know uh read the room read the room
00:23:35
then you get into the fact is what type
00:23:37
of person is this individual is he a
00:23:40
conservative person he's somebody that's
00:23:42
going to want to flex is he somebody
00:23:43
that's going to enjoy it and just like
00:23:45
be crazy over it or easy someone that's
00:23:49
somewhat conservative going into an
00:23:51
environment where he needs to be
00:23:52
conservative and this thing is not going
00:23:54
to get a whole lot of wear time yep
00:23:55
right sometimes people are just afraid
00:23:57
to wear expensive things right crime
00:23:59
this that and the other geographically
00:24:01
right you don't want to wear a big gold
00:24:03
watch walking around London nowadays you
00:24:05
know articles all over the place right
00:24:07
and certain cities United States as well
00:24:09
it's it's borderline dangerous right uh
00:24:12
so
00:24:13
is he a watch Person
00:24:15
what type of person is he if he is a
00:24:17
watch Person you figure out the type of
00:24:19
person he is
00:24:20
figure out the style is it somebody that
00:24:22
wears a suit and a tie every day is this
00:24:23
somebody that wears sneakers and uh you
00:24:26
know track pants or whatever it might be
00:24:28
right what is the overall style of that
00:24:30
person because you look I know guys that
00:24:32
won't be caught dead wearing this
00:24:34
pattern right
00:24:36
size of a person is very important very
00:24:38
you know when you get into when you get
00:24:40
into some of these watches like this
00:24:41
little Cartier Santos for example like
00:24:43
it'll fit mine in your wrist but there's
00:24:45
guys out there when they put it on it's
00:24:47
going to look like a ring it's probably
00:24:48
not for Shaq it's probably not for Shaq
00:24:50
so you have Alternatives another one I
00:24:52
forgot to mention Panerai yeah one of my
00:24:54
favorite Brands you know when I started
00:24:55
in this business this was such a great
00:24:57
seller today not so much which equals
00:25:00
deals so many alternatives to this very
00:25:02
big bulky sporty watch but if you're a
00:25:04
guy that's going to wear a suit and a
00:25:05
tie let's say a new attorney that's
00:25:06
going into the workforce there's no way
00:25:09
it's you can pull this off under you
00:25:11
know your dress shirt yeah it's another
00:25:13
problem right and for the most part keep
00:25:16
in mind everybody that's watching here
00:25:18
and let's say you're out there buying a
00:25:20
gift nine out of ten times you're still
00:25:22
going to reach for Rolex you're still
00:25:23
going to reach for an Omega but look at
00:25:25
other Alternatives that are out there
00:25:27
especially if your budget doesn't allow
00:25:30
because the more popular something is
00:25:31
the more money it's going to be so as an
00:25:34
alternative you look at other brands or
00:25:36
the major brands such as again IWC Jager
00:25:39
Panerai even Paddock even Brigade look
00:25:42
at this marine marine marine marine
00:25:43
automatic right from Brigade it's a
00:25:45
sporty watch that's still affordable
00:25:46
around a price range where you're not
00:25:48
spending an arm or leg around prices
00:25:50
over Rolex really if you think about it
00:25:51
look at up and coming guys Bulgari is
00:25:55
another one right and then if you want
00:25:57
to flex for little cash you can still go
00:25:59
with an old school President right
00:26:02
there's so many Alternatives out there
00:26:04
but the number one and most key point is
00:26:07
as you said and that is read the room
00:26:09
right reading the room is most important
00:26:12
knowing who are you gifting this watch
00:26:13
because the worst thing that can ever
00:26:14
happen is for something for any one of
00:26:16
these whether it's from the most popular
00:26:18
to the less popular is to sit on the
00:26:21
Shelf and last but not least
00:26:23
especially when it comes to Dad's gifts
00:26:25
I always tell uh I always tell the
00:26:28
client the same thing how long have you
00:26:30
been married I don't know 10 15 20 years
00:26:32
I'm like perhaps this is not the best
00:26:35
surprise gift perhaps this is something
00:26:37
that's actually worth discussing ahead
00:26:39
of time and as much as you kill the
00:26:41
surprise Factor oftentimes it's actually
00:26:44
smarter to speak to your significant
00:26:46
other in advance and say listen
00:26:48
this is what I was thinking I or I got
00:26:50
you I couldn't agree with you more I got
00:26:52
you a gift here you're three four five
00:26:54
choices what are your thoughts about
00:26:56
this exactly because
00:26:58
a lot of the times what can happen is
00:27:00
you think you know
00:27:02
and then once you open up that
00:27:03
conversation you you may be very
00:27:05
surprised as to what the per maybe
00:27:07
something maybe they were looking for
00:27:08
something maybe they've been doing their
00:27:10
own research maybe they really don't go
00:27:12
into their browser history if your
00:27:14
husband is a watch guy go into their
00:27:16
browser history and you can actually
00:27:17
well skip the porn sites and you can
00:27:20
actually and you can actually go into
00:27:21
the browsing history and say hey he was
00:27:23
browsing this website okay what was he
00:27:26
looking at what were the pages that he
00:27:27
visited you can easily like if you go to
00:27:29
our website any other website what's the
00:27:31
most basic format by brand right so
00:27:33
somebody goes into a browser and they go
00:27:35
into a watch website you can actually
00:27:37
follow their history and see what brands
00:27:39
they actually look at you can actually
00:27:40
narrow it down you know if if your
00:27:43
significant other didn't look at a
00:27:44
single IWC or single two-door and you
00:27:47
spend most of his time on Rolex but
00:27:48
guess what you just nailed it to go see
00:27:50
which Rolex is yeah that's actually one
00:27:52
of what what the most successful
00:27:53
software companies in the in the world
00:27:55
do right they guess as to what your next
00:27:58
move is going to be so you can actually
00:27:59
tell a lot about somebody in their
00:28:01
browser history keep bringing me back
00:28:03
this browser history but are they F1
00:28:05
fans what team do they like oh they like
00:28:07
this scene maybe a tag is great for them
00:28:08
oh they like this thing maybe an IWC is
00:28:10
good for them what kind of actors do
00:28:12
they like what kind of athletes do they
00:28:13
follow and then you can you can
00:28:15
literally Chop It Down chop it Down chop
00:28:17
it down to get down to the nuts and
00:28:19
bolts of of what they are actually
00:28:21
wanting versus what you thought they
00:28:22
wanted think about what the big boys do
00:28:24
when you go out on your Instagram and
00:28:25
you know you say something yeah you say
00:28:28
something out loud in the room and next
00:28:30
thing there's an ad that pops up on your
00:28:32
feed or there you go and your browsing
00:28:33
history or your the algorithm Works in a
00:28:35
way what's interesting like if I go into
00:28:37
my Instagram right now and I start
00:28:39
scrolling through the suggestion list
00:28:40
I'm going to see a bunch of racing stuff
00:28:42
I'm going to see a bunch of watch stuff
00:28:44
right because that's what I'm into
00:28:45
that's what I that's the accounts that I
00:28:47
follow right it's as easy as going into
00:28:49
significant others accountancy who he
00:28:51
follows right and hopefully there's no
00:28:54
surprises there as you're saying this is
00:28:56
this I'm thinking this could really open
00:28:58
up a can of uh yeah yeah some dads
00:29:01
gentlemen I apologize as an advance if
00:29:03
your wives go through your browser
00:29:04
history and they see something that they
00:29:05
weren't but listen this is this is how
00:29:07
social media works today and you know
00:29:09
it's designed to figure out what is it
00:29:11
that you're into and put that content in
00:29:12
front of you and you can utilize you can
00:29:14
piggyback off of that to figure out that
00:29:16
perfect gift just keep in mind again
00:29:19
one thing I didn't say
00:29:21
you know we said start with the
00:29:23
individual right
00:29:24
about price is it what kind of cover
00:29:26
price but don't get carried away in
00:29:28
price because what usually happens is I
00:29:31
set a budget of a dollar hypothetically
00:29:33
and I'm like well if a dollar ten I can
00:29:36
get this with just a dollar twenty I can
00:29:38
get this don't fall into that trap
00:29:39
either if you have a budget set in mind
00:29:41
there's so many options within a healthy
00:29:44
budget whether it's under five under 10
00:29:46
under 15 under 25. there's so many
00:29:49
healthy options out there you can always
00:29:51
take your time and you can always always
00:29:53
come up with Alternatives narrow down
00:29:55
whether you're doing based on browsing
00:29:56
history whether you're doing it based on
00:29:58
speaking to your significant other or
00:30:00
your child for that matter who's a
00:30:02
graduate
00:30:03
don't fall into the fact that you think
00:30:07
you know what your kid is going to like
00:30:08
because that age Gap
00:30:10
trust me when I tell you the only reason
00:30:13
I was able to pick something for my son
00:30:14
is because this is what I do for a
00:30:16
living right I think it's I think it's
00:30:17
important that if you're looking for
00:30:19
that gift whether it's for Dad or for
00:30:20
for your son or daughter I think it's
00:30:23
important to narrow down a few different
00:30:24
options then come to a company like
00:30:27
ourselves or somebody else who has
00:30:29
expertise who is professional in these
00:30:30
matters
00:30:31
and say hey I picked x amount of pieces
00:30:34
let's call five watches what do you
00:30:35
think oh and then one of our sales
00:30:37
associates will get on the phone and
00:30:39
could easily dissect down to the watch
00:30:41
exactly what we think would be the best
00:30:43
choice for that individual which is why
00:30:45
when oftentimes when a call comes in on
00:30:48
a grad gift somebody's graduating high
00:30:51
school or college will pass that inquiry
00:30:53
off to some of the kids that just
00:30:54
graduated college right and but again
00:30:57
take everything with a grain of salt
00:30:59
because again every single individual
00:31:01
whether it's a salesperson here or any
00:31:04
other company is still going to be
00:31:06
biased what let me ask you a question
00:31:07
what is the number one
00:31:10
mistake that people make during this
00:31:12
process they buy what they like no what
00:31:15
doing it last minute oh yes that is
00:31:18
extremely extremely important because
00:31:20
when you do things last minute and not
00:31:22
only watches in life you settle making a
00:31:24
mistake end up either overpaying you
00:31:27
rush it you need to get it shipped FedEx
00:31:29
lost the package whatever the case may
00:31:31
be right so give yourself enough time
00:31:34
to not make this a stressful situation
00:31:36
time Adrian yes I'm going to ask you to
00:31:39
pick a watch under ten thousand dollars
00:31:42
other than the main Alternatives from
00:31:44
this pile under ten thousand dollars I
00:31:46
think that tutor Panda I think is one of
00:31:49
the best things I think first of all I
00:31:50
think the engineering behind this watch
00:31:51
is actually excellent and for under ten
00:31:53
thousand dollars it looks like I don't
00:31:55
even like to say looks like a panda
00:31:56
Daytona it looks like a two Tudor Panda
00:31:59
it's got it has its own design DNA it
00:32:03
has its it has its own personality comes
00:32:05
from a great great company tutor Panda
00:32:08
would be one of my choices I would also
00:32:11
say I have to go IWC got to go with the
00:32:14
big pilot
00:32:16
you're going with IWC pilot I'm going to
00:32:18
give you well since you picked since you
00:32:20
wait how many I'm sorry how many was I
00:32:21
supposed to pick three one one oh you
00:32:24
pick two since you did that I'll pick
00:32:26
two as well give me the Paradox I'm
00:32:28
going I'm going with the Portuguese
00:32:31
specifically on a bracelets one of very
00:32:33
very you know this is a new thing for
00:32:34
them when they did the Portuguese on a
00:32:37
bracelet versus the straps uh and I
00:32:40
don't I'm sorry I don't like this
00:32:41
question because you're I'm talking
00:32:43
about for myself or if I'm getting this
00:32:45
this is where the personality comes in
00:32:47
the into play who am I buying this for I
00:32:49
don't know who I'm buying it is true you
00:32:51
know that is true so I guess on a
00:32:52
personal level I'm going to go back in
00:32:53
time and I'm gonna go with a panorama
00:32:55
Marina I don't think you can ever go
00:32:57
wrong there's a green one which is
00:32:58
amazing but just any panoram Arena
00:32:59
really will do guys we'll leave you with
00:33:01
this right there's really no
00:33:04
wrong or right way to picking out a gift
00:33:07
but there are certainly some points that
00:33:09
I hope we covered enough to help you in
00:33:11
the journey I will apologize again to
00:33:14
the dads if something comes up funky in
00:33:17
your browsing history and really to the
00:33:19
grad if you think about it but when all
00:33:23
else fails just remember the who
00:33:27
remember the use and remember to do it
00:33:30
ahead of time and not last year and due
00:33:32
diligence give yourself enough time to
00:33:34
make the right choice and stick with
00:33:35
your budget as well I think is also
00:33:36
important Adrian thanks for joining me
00:33:38
guys thank you so much for joining us we
00:33:40
will see you on the next one Happy
00:33:42
Father's Day

Description:

New Grey Market Episode: "My Plan to CRUSH $130 Million in Sales in 2024" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQt6ipa2N4M --~-- Graduation season is fast approaching and nothing says “Welcome to the real world!” quite like a fine timepiece. A watch is a thoughtful gift that can be enjoyed every day and will last a lifetime. Plus, luxury watches are the perfect family heirloom and graduation is an ideal time to start the tradition. When giving a luxury timepiece as a gift, it’s always best to stick to well-known names — think Rolex, Tudor, Cartier, Omega, TAG Heuer, and the like. That way you’ll be sure that the recipient recognizes the name of his or her new watch without the need to explain just how special your graduation gift is! So whether the soon-to-be graduate in your life is finishing up high school, university, grad school, or professional schools such as law or medicine, here are some of our top picks for the best luxury watch graduation gifts at various prices, ranging from sensible to stratospheric.
