00:00:02
it's only after we've lost everything
00:00:04
that we're free to do anything this is
00:00:06
the story of how I got my hair back
00:00:08
let's start with a timeline of events in
00:00:11
medical school back in 2008 I was
00:00:14
diagnosed with alopecia ariata mainly on
00:00:17
my legs and this is an autoimmune hair
00:00:19
loss condition where the body attacks
00:00:21
its own hair follicles I remember going
00:00:23
to a dermatologist and having them offer
00:00:25
me steroid shots but I really wasn't
00:00:28
that excited about getting shots into my
00:00:30
legs just for some more hair to grow in
00:00:33
so I said you know what let's just watch
00:00:35
it and I ended up not getting any
00:00:37
treatment at that time for the next 10
00:00:39
years different spots would come and go
00:00:41
on my legs and also on my arms so I'd
00:00:44
get an area of hair loss like a circular
00:00:46
spot and then maybe over the course of a
00:00:49
few months it would start to fill in
00:00:51
with hair and then a new spot would open
00:00:53
up somewhere else on my legs or arms
00:00:55
then at the end of my facial plastic
00:00:57
surgery Fellowship in 2018
00:00:59
I was at a plastic surgery conference in
00:01:02
Miami when I noticed in the mirror that
00:01:05
I had this spot that was opening up on
00:01:08
the left side of my head and that really
00:01:10
freaked me out I was again offered
00:01:12
steroid injections and this time I took
00:01:14
them because I was obviously worried you
00:01:16
know going into a profession that had to
00:01:19
do with Aesthetics that I was going to
00:01:21
have this big hole on the side of my
00:01:23
head with no hair and how people would
00:01:25
perceive me over the course of about
00:01:27
nine months that bald spot filled in
00:01:30
with hair and it looked pretty normal
00:01:32
then on December 7th of 2019 something
00:01:36
unexpected happened I woke up one
00:01:38
morning and I went to brush my teeth but
00:01:40
I noticed that as I was swishing the
00:01:42
water in my mouth and trying to spit it
00:01:45
out some of the water was just
00:01:46
inadvertently like squirting out of my
00:01:49
mouth and I was like wait a second like
00:01:51
why can't I control this water like I
00:01:53
never you know we don't think about
00:01:54
those things normally right we just kind
00:01:56
of do them it becomes routine and and
00:01:59
sort of route from me I was like in that
00:02:01
moment having to force myself to
00:02:03
continue to close my mouth or else the
00:02:05
water was just coming up but over the
00:02:06
course of the morning I started to
00:02:08
realize that the right side of my face
00:02:10
just felt weaker and so that was
00:02:12
something I had never experienced before
00:02:14
also my taste felt off you know I ate I
00:02:17
remember some like cheese in the morning
00:02:19
and it just didn't taste like cheese and
00:02:21
I remember that later that morning I had
00:02:23
a scheduled haircut and I was like do I
00:02:27
go to my haircut or do I go to the
00:02:29
emergency room and get evaluated for
00:02:31
like a possible stroke and that was I
00:02:34
was honestly debating between those two
00:02:35
things because I really hate changing
00:02:38
plans like so I knew I had this haircut
00:02:40
and like well I have to get my haircut
00:02:41
because it's scheduled for you know for
00:02:43
11 A.M but uh luckily my wife convinced
00:02:46
me to go to the emergency room instead I
00:02:48
got some Imaging done where they scan my
00:02:51
brain to make sure that there wasn't
00:02:52
anything really bad going on and it
00:02:54
turns out that the Imaging was all
00:02:56
normal and the blood work was as well so
00:02:59
essentially I was diagnosed with Bell's
00:03:02
Palsy at that time and they gave me some
00:03:04
steroids and antivirals to take to try
00:03:06
to improve the speed of recovery and the
00:03:08
other funny thing is that I actually had
00:03:10
a photo shoot scheduled for a few days
00:03:12
after this happened to me and I just
00:03:15
kept that because again I don't like
00:03:16
changing plans so I kept that photo
00:03:18
shoot and I couldn't actually smile
00:03:20
because then you could really see the
00:03:21
asymmetry in my face so I did my best so
00:03:24
with the help of the steroids the
00:03:26
antivirals and this electrical
00:03:27
stimulation that I was getting over the
00:03:30
course of about four weeks the facial
00:03:32
nerve improved and I started to look and
00:03:35
feel much better and I was still able to
00:03:37
get my work done during that time now
00:03:39
keep in mind that up to the age of 34 I
00:03:42
was like a Norwood zero I had this
00:03:43
really low hairline really thick full
00:03:46
hair and that was just like a staple of
00:03:49
my look right I never once had thinning
00:03:51
never really thought about my hair
00:03:54
starting to you know worsen and recede
00:03:57
or anything like that it was lucky
00:03:58
genetically but after this Belle's
00:04:00
episode my hair started to thin now the
00:04:03
following month on January 21st of 2020
00:04:06
I was sick with covid and at that time
00:04:09
we didn't know what it actually was
00:04:11
right but I had these terrible symptoms
00:04:13
I was in bed for a week I literally just
00:04:16
had these high fevers for a week
00:04:18
couldn't get out of bed it was the only
00:04:19
time that I actually had to reschedule
00:04:21
my surgical patients because I couldn't
00:04:23
get out of bed and soon after that I
00:04:25
started to experience rapid hair loss
00:04:28
throughout my entire body I tried PRP
00:04:31
injections I tried oral minoxidil I
00:04:34
tried squaric acid and none of that was
00:04:37
really helping and we made a video in
00:04:39
the past that we posted on this channel
00:04:41
that goes through some of those trials
00:04:43
and tribulations so check that one out
00:04:45
too and while all of this was happening
00:04:48
January of 2020 was when I had split off
00:04:50
from my hair transplant mentor and I was
00:04:53
worried that you know maybe patients
00:04:56
wouldn't come to me because I was this
00:04:57
young hair transplant surgeon with you
00:04:59
know not too many before and after
00:05:01
photos at that time and now I was losing
00:05:04
my hair how would I explain that to my
00:05:06
patients all those things were swirling
00:05:08
around in my head and were making me
00:05:10
really nervous and Afraid for the future
00:05:12
and then of course uh the pandemic hit
00:05:14
and then I was just like I don't know
00:05:17
what's gonna happen I mean this is just
00:05:19
a complete disaster now six months later
00:05:21
in June of 2020 I decided to just shave
00:05:25
the remaining strands on my head the
00:05:28
hair was looking so thin and it just
00:05:31
wasn't worth just putting up with those
00:05:34
hairs anymore so I went ahead and just
00:05:36
shaved it off and my condition at that
00:05:38
time was officially alopecia areata
00:05:42
universalis the other big problem was
00:05:44
that my fingernails were starting to get
00:05:46
super brittle they started to get these
00:05:49
pits and they just weren't strong so if
00:05:52
I were like on the keyboard I'd noticed
00:05:54
that you know the fingernail was
00:05:56
starting to bend and I was really
00:05:58
worried that it was going to affect my
00:05:59
surgical performance as the nails got
00:06:02
more and more brittle so around that
00:06:04
time as some of you know through our you
00:06:07
know past videos I went on immunotherapy
00:06:09
so this is essentially like allergy
00:06:12
shots so they found out I was allergic
00:06:13
to many things and similar to what
00:06:16
squaric acid does which is an
00:06:18
immunotherapy that's more applied to the
00:06:20
surface where you redirect your immune
00:06:22
system to Target something other than
00:06:25
the hair follicles so this was something
00:06:27
that didn't have that much data behind
00:06:30
it as far as systemic immunotherapy but
00:06:32
my immunologist and I felt that there
00:06:34
was a chance that things could get
00:06:36
better if we started to Target some of
00:06:38
the things that I was allergic to so
00:06:40
that the immune system would essentially
00:06:42
have something else to do other than
00:06:44
destroy my own hair follicles and mess
00:06:46
up my nails so this went on for about a
00:06:48
year and a half that I would go every
00:06:50
week and I'd get you know stuck with
00:06:52
needles to get these allergy shots I
00:06:55
also briefly tried a gluten-free diet
00:06:58
around that time and then like an
00:07:00
anti-inflammatory diet these diets were
00:07:03
very hard for me to stick to uh and I
00:07:06
wasn't sure if they were actually doing
00:07:08
anything so you know I tried them
00:07:10
intermittently for about the course of a
00:07:13
year but then ended up going back to
00:07:15
like my usual diet which is a fairly
00:07:17
balanced diet luckily my fingernails
00:07:20
improved over the course of about three
00:07:22
to six months and I was super thankful
00:07:24
and pleased with just that if you guys
00:07:27
remember I got glasses around that time
00:07:29
not because my vision was uh getting
00:07:32
poorer but because I wanted to cover up
00:07:35
the appearance of the lack of eyebrows
00:07:37
so nine months into this immunotherapy
00:07:40
in February of 2021 there were some
00:07:43
signs of scalp hair regrowth but this
00:07:46
was really short-lived and that hair
00:07:48
disappeared again six months later so by
00:07:51
August of 2021 I again had no hair on
00:07:55
the body so now a year after that in
00:07:58
July of 2020 2 the eyebrows started to
00:08:02
spontaneously return and at this point I
00:08:05
wasn't on immunotherapy anymore I wasn't
00:08:07
getting those allergy shots I pretty
00:08:09
much just had stopped doing that and as
00:08:11
most of you know I decided not to pursue
00:08:13
Jack inhibitor therapy and I have a
00:08:16
video about why I made that decision and
00:08:19
over the last six months the hair has
00:08:21
just continued to thicken the eyebrows
00:08:24
the eyelashes and you can see you know
00:08:26
some scalp regrowth and just like facial
00:08:28
hair and like underarm hair and not
00:08:31
really much on my arms but on my legs
00:08:33
I'm seeing some signs of hair growth and
00:08:35
I'm nowhere near where I used to be but
00:08:38
it's promising that at least some of the
00:08:39
hair is returning but remember that
00:08:41
alopecia universalis is the more severe
00:08:44
form of alopecia areata and the chance
00:08:47
of complete regrowth of my hair is under
00:08:50
10 so what actually brought the hair
00:08:53
back there is no one right answer here
00:08:55
but these are some of my thoughts
00:08:57
overall I've had reduced stress at work
00:09:00
about a year ago in September of 2022 I
00:09:04
made the conscious decision to scale
00:09:06
back on some of the surgeries that I was
00:09:08
doing and I decided that I was only
00:09:10
going to focus on hair surgery and lip
00:09:13
surgery and that was a huge decision for
00:09:15
me because you know I'm fully trained in
00:09:18
really high level rhinoplasty surgery
00:09:21
facelift surgery eyelid surgery as many
00:09:24
of you know and I was getting nice
00:09:25
results doing those surgeries for many
00:09:28
patients both for cosmetic purposes and
00:09:31
for functional purposes so to cold
00:09:33
turkey just stop offering many of those
00:09:36
surgeries was a huge decision also over
00:09:39
the course of the last year I've been
00:09:41
able to grow my practice grow my staff
00:09:45
and I really feel like well supported
00:09:47
both on the front end when it comes to
00:09:49
you know receptionist my patient
00:09:51
coordinator and then on the back end you
00:09:53
know I have an amazing team of like
00:09:55
really experienced people you know my
00:09:58
hair tacks my hair nurse my physician
00:10:01
assistant I mean everyone's really
00:10:02
top-notch and doing an incredible job so
00:10:05
over the last year the practice has been
00:10:07
stable uh you know we're still
00:10:09
scheduling several months out and that
00:10:12
of course uh gives me just some sense of
00:10:14
of calm and again reduce stress also
00:10:18
over the course of the last year I've
00:10:20
had reduced stress at home my daughter
00:10:22
is now four and she's sleeping a little
00:10:25
bit better so you know those sleepless
00:10:28
nights uh are gone luckily in addition
00:10:31
to that uh something that I haven't
00:10:33
really spoken publicly about just out of
00:10:35
respect for my wife and you know her
00:10:38
specific requests but she's now allowed
00:10:40
me to to mention this uh in this video
00:10:42
is that around the time that I was
00:10:45
diagnosed with alopecia areata and I
00:10:47
thought I was going through something
00:10:48
you know horrific and terrible I felt so
00:10:50
bad for myself well that quickly went
00:10:52
away because my beautiful wife Liz was
00:10:55
diagnosed with a form of leukemia called
00:10:58
CML out of the blue and that was of
00:11:00
course uh you know insanely difficult
00:11:03
and uh really heartbreaking at the time
00:11:06
but she's a super strong person and she
00:11:09
was able to uh you know overcome the
00:11:12
disease and was placed on uh the proper
00:11:15
chemotherapy pills early on and did
00:11:17
really well with them uh luckily and so
00:11:20
you know she has been off the medication
00:11:22
now for a few months and uh and in full
00:11:27
remission of her disease and so that
00:11:30
first of all back when it started I no
00:11:32
longer felt bad for myself because she
00:11:34
was going through something much worse
00:11:36
and the the crazy irony of some of the
00:11:39
comments that I was receiving on these
00:11:40
videos was like you know oh do you have
00:11:42
cancer like oh are you going through
00:11:44
treatment because I didn't have eyebrows
00:11:46
and all this stuff meanwhile you know
00:11:47
it's my wife who's going through all
00:11:49
these crazy things but she's done really
00:11:51
really great and you know that's been uh
00:11:54
the biggest uh to Joy in my life is
00:11:56
seeing her recover and do awesome that
00:11:58
has of course taken stress off of me and
00:12:01
it's given me a new Fresh perspective on
00:12:04
life and really what matters most to or
00:12:07
what should matter most to all of us
00:12:09
I've also been exercising more I go for
00:12:12
these little jogs maybe two to three
00:12:14
miles three to four times a week and
00:12:17
that's really helped just kind of clear
00:12:20
the mind and make me feel that
00:12:22
physically stronger and with a little
00:12:24
bit of weightlifting you know mixed in
00:12:26
as well some of you guys might not know
00:12:29
but I used to actually like lift weights
00:12:30
towards the end of high school early
00:12:32
college I was like probably in my best
00:12:34
shape and then it sort of went downhill
00:12:36
my diet has also been overall quite good
00:12:39
I've been eating less overall I still
00:12:42
eat way too many sweets but other than
00:12:44
that it's a balanced diet and I've just
00:12:47
been doing some intermittent fasting and
00:12:49
I think maybe that has something to do
00:12:50
with the hair regrowth as well and at
00:12:53
the end of the day I'm really doing what
00:12:55
I love you know I really love caring for
00:12:57
patients and seeing them have fantastic
00:12:59
results
00:13:00
um with their surgeries and just the you
00:13:03
know delivering good quality care I also
00:13:06
love educating on YouTube you know I've
00:13:08
always been into teaching and I tutored
00:13:11
early on in my life like even in early
00:13:13
High School I was tutoring people who
00:13:15
were a year you know behind and that has
00:13:17
been something that you know has always
00:13:19
kind of come naturally and that gives me
00:13:21
a ton of happiness and joy in my life
00:13:23
also I really enjoy the process of
00:13:26
growing the practice as well as growing
00:13:29
the brand feel confident and being able
00:13:31
to add value to people's lives beyond
00:13:34
what just surgery can afford really
00:13:37
helping people learn how to navigate the
00:13:40
Aesthetics Marketplace and to not be
00:13:43
fooled by different gimmicks or
00:13:45
marketing tactics that people might have
00:13:46
but to again make these informed
00:13:49
decisions with the best possible
00:13:51
information available that's truly my
00:13:53
goal with all the activities that I do
00:13:55
online and that I do in my practice and
00:13:58
I think being able to do these things
00:14:00
things that I love doing has given me an
00:14:02
overall just peace of mind and the
00:14:04
ability to produce without you know
00:14:06
being worried about what people will say
00:14:09
for example because I just know that as
00:14:11
long as I put sort of patience first or
00:14:13
people who are just looking to learn and
00:14:15
Elevate the overall nature of my field
00:14:19
then I'm doing the right thing and we're
00:14:22
just going to keep making videos and and
00:14:24
doing good work ironically I had to lose
00:14:27
my hair to find the drive to be able to
00:14:30
educate the world about hair loss and to
00:14:33
give many people the joy of hair
00:14:35
restoration and I truly believe that
00:14:37
your support and kindness in part helped
00:14:40
bring back my own hair so I wanted to
00:14:43
thank my family my friends my patients
00:14:46
my staff and the entire YouTube
00:14:48
Community regardless of what the future
00:14:51
holds for my battle with alopecia areata
00:14:54
