00:00:00
this was the best bike in the world in
00:00:03
2012.
00:00:05
it's a beautiful pinarello Dogma 2 with
00:00:08
a custom paint job for Bradley Wiggins
00:00:10
when he was national champion and riding
00:00:13
for team Sky that's not all though we
00:00:15
also have this absolutely stunning
00:00:17
pinarello f8 that also used to belong to
00:00:21
Sir Bradley Wiggins and he rode this one
00:00:23
in the 2015 season conveniently both
00:00:26
Wiggins and I ride a size 56 frame and
00:00:29
we've been given permission to ride
00:00:32
these bikes these bikes were good enough
00:00:34
to win grand Tours 10 years ago but how
00:00:38
do they stack up against the bikes that
00:00:40
the pros ride now we're gonna find out I
00:00:44
mean they might actually be better this
00:00:47
f8 is considerably lighter it feels
00:00:50
amazing
00:00:52
[Music]
00:00:55
before we go any further we need to give
00:00:58
a shout out to Dan at vintage velos who
00:01:00
you may remember lenter's Jan ulrich's
00:01:03
valser cheers Dan you're a legend and
00:01:05
you can check out his YouTube channel
00:01:07
too while we have these bikes we're also
00:01:09
going to take them to the wind tunnel in
00:01:11
Silverstone with the help of the bike
00:01:13
Taylor to see how the aerodynamics of
00:01:16
them Compares if you want to see the
00:01:18
results of that we have a video over on
00:01:20
the tech channel so on to the bike
00:01:22
starting with the beautiful Dogma 2. so
00:01:25
this was ridden by Sir Bradley Wiggins
00:01:28
in 2012 this particular bite in the
00:01:30
national championships colors was used
00:01:32
in races such as the Volta Algarve the
00:01:36
tour of romandi and parinise but of this
00:01:38
particular colorway only four of these
00:01:41
were made and only two got ridden so
00:01:43
there was this saddle as well on here
00:01:45
which is a nice custom saddle with sort
00:01:47
of mod Bradley Wiggins on a scooter on
00:01:49
apparently only four of those this
00:01:50
colorway was actually made available to
00:01:52
the general public for sale but for the
00:01:54
bikes made for Bradley Wiggins there
00:01:56
were only four now a couple of key
00:01:58
differences on the bike we have today
00:02:00
versus when Bradley Wiggins rode it they
00:02:03
often had like Wheels where they took
00:02:05
the logos off and then often put Shimano
00:02:08
logos or no logos on the wheels if you
00:02:10
look at pictures of him riding the Tour
00:02:12
de France you'll see what I'm talking
00:02:13
about a lot of the time they
00:02:15
suspiciously look like they might have
00:02:16
been zips
00:02:18
the big thing though is that the wheels
00:02:20
of that era were all tubular and very
00:02:22
narrow I mean the tire clearance on this
00:02:24
particular bike you're not getting
00:02:26
anything in there sort of Beyond 23 mil
00:02:28
tires the other big difference is that
00:02:30
at this time Bradley Wiggins would have
00:02:33
been using an SRM power meter paired
00:02:35
with o symmetric chainrings the other
00:02:37
big standout thing is that it's got
00:02:39
Shimano di2 10 speed on it the first
00:02:42
generation of di2 SRAM red etap hadn't
00:02:45
even been invented at this point and so
00:02:48
it was quite rare for a team to use
00:02:51
electronic gears and in the first
00:02:53
iteration of di2 it has this quite ugly
00:02:56
external battery that sort of fitted
00:02:58
here onto the down tube
00:03:01
the other bikes we have here both the f8
00:03:03
and the F all have threaded Italian
00:03:06
bottom brackets no press fit at this era
00:03:09
of bike threaded bottom brackets were
00:03:11
still pretty common but then later on
00:03:13
they can have just disappeared and
00:03:15
everything became press fit not
00:03:17
pinarello though they stuck with
00:03:19
threaded bottom brackets which yeah I've
00:03:21
heard is because the team Sky mechanics
00:03:24
said they wanted threaded bottom
00:03:27
brackets and insisted that that's what
00:03:28
it should be but uh there you go I think
00:03:31
we should go and ride it
00:03:33
foreign
00:03:34
[Music]
00:03:39
I mean
00:03:40
these things are massive we've done wind
00:03:43
tunnel testing and shown that for every
00:03:45
centimeter of extra bar with you lose a
00:03:49
few Watts but this is the bar width that
00:03:52
Brad used in 2012. this is what he won
00:03:55
all those races on and it was just the
00:03:58
fashion amongst the entire Peloton to
00:04:00
have wide bars like this but for me now
00:04:03
I feel like I'm I'm riding a bus I'll
00:04:07
tell you one of the things that
00:04:08
instantly stands out compared to now
00:04:10
what I'm used to is the brakes I mean
00:04:13
it's noticeable how much brakes have
00:04:16
just continued to improve as Rim brakes
00:04:18
but then obviously to disc two in terms
00:04:20
of the actual feel of the bike
00:04:23
even though we're running super skinny
00:04:25
tires and the bike doesn't have much
00:04:28
clearance Beyond 23 mil tires it's uh
00:04:33
essentially surprisingly comfortable
00:04:36
you don't have the range of gears at the
00:04:38
back though that for me is one of the
00:04:40
big improvements that they've made
00:04:42
so when you're going up the hill
00:04:45
find a bit more out the saddle don't
00:04:48
quite have the power that Wiggins had
00:04:51
one of the things we're used to hearing
00:04:52
is that with every new bike model that
00:04:54
comes out it gets seemingly stiffer than
00:04:57
the previous one
00:04:59
well I can tell you
00:05:02
when you get out the saddle and sort of
00:05:04
Press On
00:05:05
it it feels remarkably stiff and kind of
00:05:09
makes sense because
00:05:10
Cavendish was riding for team sky in
00:05:13
2012 and he would have been riding a
00:05:15
Dogma too like this
00:05:17
another time he remarked that the bike
00:05:20
was perfect and if anyone's gonna feel
00:05:24
the stiffness of a bike
00:05:26
it's Cavendish but yeah
00:05:29
it feels really good
00:05:32
this bike is so cool and it's like it's
00:05:35
mad like I watched Wiggins win races
00:05:37
like Harry niece on this bike I never
00:05:39
thought I'd get Riders it's ridiculous
00:05:41
but ah I have to go ride the f8
00:05:44
[Music]
00:05:46
oh
00:05:51
this bike feels absolutely incredible
00:05:55
the weight is instantly noticeable but
00:05:57
just everything else like the bearings
00:06:01
The Hub bottom bracket it all just feels
00:06:04
so solid and so smooth
00:06:07
is a bit of Secret Sauce going on on
00:06:09
this bike I feel you know it's like that
00:06:11
sort of lore that you hear about where
00:06:13
you know the mechanics of say Riders
00:06:15
like Alberto contador was strip out the
00:06:18
grease and the bearings and put sewing
00:06:19
machine oil in to make them run you know
00:06:22
that bit smoother and lighter and
00:06:24
yeah I don't know I just feel there's
00:06:26
something like that going on here
00:06:27
because this feels absolutely amazing it
00:06:30
does still have the mahusive wide
00:06:32
handlebars
00:06:34
which yeah kind of I guess slow you down
00:06:37
but
00:06:39
riding the two of them back to back
00:06:41
this and the Dogma too it
00:06:43
this does instantly feel that little bit
00:06:46
quicker
00:06:47
and the drag reduction on it that's
00:06:50
claimed by pinarello at the time is
00:06:52
absolutely huge so I can't wait to see
00:06:55
how this performs in the Wind Tunnel not
00:06:58
just against the Dogma 2 but also
00:07:00
against the modern air
00:07:04
the drag-saving claim that was made at
00:07:07
the time is was a 47 reduction in drag
00:07:10
over this versus the Dogma 2 which is is
00:07:13
huge I mean that's a massive leap in
00:07:16
technology and looking at the two you
00:07:18
can kind of see it the the Dogma 2 just
00:07:21
has that very organic wavy shape which
00:07:23
doesn't appear to be designed for
00:07:26
aerodynamics it's more for creating a
00:07:29
bike that is more comfortable and has
00:07:31
more compliance built into it but is
00:07:33
still stiff the f8 is just such a strong
00:07:36
departure away from the Dogma too and
00:07:39
that's because it was a collaboration
00:07:41
between pinarello Dimitris katzarnis and
00:07:45
also jaguar and they completely revamped
00:07:48
the shape of the bike to improve its
00:07:51
performance with a massive emphasis on
00:07:52
trying to improve the aerodynamics
00:07:56
it's got roundels on for all Brad's
00:07:59
major victories on the top tube London
00:08:01
2012 Tour de France in his Olympic Golds
00:08:05
on there as well
00:08:06
overall the silhouette and the shape of
00:08:08
it is very very similar to what we have
00:08:12
on the pinarello F but just lifting this
00:08:15
it feels very light so let's get the
00:08:18
scales out
00:08:20
6.80 that's right on the UCI weight
00:08:24
limit although admittedly doesn't have
00:08:25
pedals in at the moment but that is
00:08:27
seriously light especially when you
00:08:30
consider
00:08:31
this isn't this isn't a weight weenie
00:08:33
build I mean we've got a saddle with a
00:08:35
titanium rail not carbon we've got an
00:08:37
alloy bar and stem on here if you really
00:08:40
wanted to go to town and make this
00:08:42
lighter you could shave half a kilo off
00:08:44
this if you really started you know
00:08:46
being a bit more
00:08:48
um picky with the components but it had
00:08:50
to make it up to that to that UCI weight
00:08:52
limit because it was a Pro Bike
00:08:55
this one's now running the Shimano Dura
00:08:58
Ace di2 in the second generation which
00:09:00
is 11 speed and has this quite ugly
00:09:03
junction box now hanging underneath the
00:09:05
stem and still in terms of the evolution
00:09:08
of the pinarello Dogma you've got Rim
00:09:12
brakes still but they're single Mount
00:09:14
the Dual Mount caliper came in with the
00:09:16
F12 later on
00:09:18
um and then now it is obviously disc
00:09:20
brakes and you still have external cable
00:09:22
routing coming into the frame here
00:09:25
um at the front of the bike although it
00:09:27
is very neat and and to the side it's
00:09:29
not fully integrated through the headset
00:09:31
like you see on the latest version right
00:09:34
I'm going to jump on my pinarello f I
00:09:36
adore this bike but there's no Escape in
00:09:39
the fact it's so noticeable this weighs
00:09:41
so much more than what I've just been
00:09:42
riding
00:09:44
oh
00:09:45
[Music]
00:09:50
the big thing which will stand out to
00:09:52
you when you're looking at me front on
00:09:54
now is how much cleaner the f is on the
00:09:57
front end you're gone are all the cables
00:10:00
gone is the the round bar and separate
00:10:02
stem that was well the standard thing
00:10:05
that all Pros used 10 years ago and
00:10:07
instead we have this much neater cockpit
00:10:09
no cables and very narrow I mean this is
00:10:12
38 centimeters wide you can get narrower
00:10:16
the 38 seems to be the norm that Pros
00:10:19
use today and
00:10:21
if you've ever experienced narrow bars
00:10:23
you'll know what I'm talking about when
00:10:25
I say just going that little bit
00:10:26
narrower you can feel it and we've
00:10:28
proved it in the Wind Tunnel it's faster
00:10:30
with the wheels that I have in now this
00:10:33
bike is about well 600 grams 500 grams
00:10:36
heavier than the S8 I was just riding
00:10:38
it's something that's my eyes have
00:10:40
really been open to when we've done
00:10:42
these retro bike comparisons it's just
00:10:44
how far Tire technology has come on a
00:10:47
large part of that weight difference
00:10:48
comes from the fact that bikes of 10
00:10:52
years ago were running tubular tires
00:10:54
whereas now
00:10:56
but she's tubeless this is using
00:10:58
tubeless and wider tires too 28
00:11:01
millimeters I've got on front and rear
00:11:02
and
00:11:04
we know that these tires have much lower
00:11:07
rolling resistance than tubular tires
00:11:09
from back in the day and so consequently
00:11:13
although you have that heavier setup
00:11:17
it's not actually slower
00:11:19
it's important to remember that the
00:11:21
pinarello f is also a grand tour winner
00:11:23
you know it's had many successors won
00:11:26
many amazing races most notably I guess
00:11:29
would be the Giroud Italia another huge
00:11:32
difference is Tire clearance on those
00:11:35
older bikes you're struggling to get
00:11:37
anything bigger than 23 mil tires in
00:11:40
them which I think blows people's minds
00:11:42
considering how used to wider tires
00:11:44
people are now on this one you can get
00:11:46
32s in it and
00:11:49
I think the tire volume that you can get
00:11:51
plus probably tweaks that have been made
00:11:53
to the frame really are contributing to
00:11:56
just a much smoother ride right now
00:11:58
having ridden the same piece of road
00:12:00
back to back on on all these bikes this
00:12:04
is by far the smoothest ride
00:12:07
foreign
00:12:10
it's definitely a sort of evolution you
00:12:13
can see from the from the f8 it's a
00:12:16
complete Revolution from from the Dogma
00:12:18
too with the disc brakes it has gained
00:12:21
you know a bit of weight uh over the
00:12:23
other one but the frame is still very
00:12:26
light and um it has titanium Hardware in
00:12:29
various places like the seat post clamp
00:12:32
here and uh in in the headset too so
00:12:35
let's see what it's doing
00:12:39
there you go seven and a half kilos bit
00:12:41
heavier than the f8 but about the same
00:12:44
as the Dogma 2 which is quite intriguing
00:12:48
um these wheels aren't the lightest
00:12:49
either they're uh ultegra specs so Pro
00:12:53
level you know you'd probably be running
00:12:55
Jora Ace spec which is slightly lighter
00:12:56
so you'd save 100 200 grams there or so
00:13:00
but overall to answer the question how
00:13:03
do the bikes that were used by Riders to
00:13:07
win the biggest bike races in the world
00:13:09
10 years ago compare to this which is
00:13:11
what the current Pros use
00:13:14
well there's definitely been Improvement
00:13:16
although there is a weight increase
00:13:18
which we see when we weigh Pro Bikes
00:13:20
across the board the functionality
00:13:22
offered by the disc brakes the bigger
00:13:24
range of Gears available the much bigger
00:13:27
tire clearance the faster Rolling Tires
00:13:30
and the sort of more aerodynamic the
00:13:33
bikes are now with more integration and
00:13:34
narrower cockpits overall does make them
00:13:37
faster I'm intrigued to see in the Wind
00:13:40
Tunnel how much more aerodynamic this is
00:13:42
I suspect it's going to be quite a bit
00:13:45
but we'll see and head over to the tech
00:13:47
Channel if you want to check that out
00:13:50
in terms of the other two bikes the the
00:13:52
Dogma 2 feels Antiquated compared to
00:13:54
this truth be told and one of the big
00:13:57
reasons for that I think is the narrow
00:13:59
tires and the lack of aerodynamics the
00:14:02
f8 however
00:14:03
is still a phenomenal bike and I would
00:14:06
wager that it would still be capable of
00:14:08
winning the biggest bike races in the
00:14:11
world right now even though it's 10
00:14:13
years old which is a testament to how
00:14:16
how good a bike it is I'd say even more
00:14:18
so if you modified it a bit and fit some
00:14:21
narrower more aerodynamic bars and some
00:14:24
faster rolling but slightly heavier
00:14:26
tubeless tires but overall let us know
00:14:30
which one you would pick and rather have
00:14:32
in the comments section down below
00:14:35
f f 8 or Dogma 2. I hope you've enjoyed
00:14:39
this video if you have give it a thumbs
00:14:40
up also cheers to Dan from vintage
00:14:43
fellows and we'll see you in the next
00:14:44
one love you bye
