00:00:00
so we all know that Warhammer Miniatures
00:00:02
are small like of course they are
00:00:05
they're called Miniatures it's in the
00:00:06
name I don't know but have you ever
00:00:08
wondered what it looks like when an
00:00:10
obsessive hobbyist with a taste for
00:00:12
Perfection tries to paint the world's
00:00:15
smallest Warhammer Miniatures in the
00:00:18
most detail ever attempted at that scale
00:00:21
because if you have then you're in luck
00:00:23
stick around you've probably seen that
00:00:25
recently Games Workshop released Legions
00:00:28
imperialis this specialist design studi
00:00:31
newest addition to their tiny epic scale
00:00:33
Warhammer range which started with
00:00:36
titanicus and then we went to Sky
00:00:38
tanicus and now we're in what I'm going
00:00:40
to be calling guy tanicus because I
00:00:42
think my jokes are funny and if you're
00:00:45
new to Warhammer or the concept of Epic
00:00:48
scale Miniatures then hi hello have you
00:00:51
ever wanted to paint a little guy or a
00:00:53
tank or even a Titan but little tiny and
00:00:57
that's essentially all Epic scale is
00:00:59
it's just massively scaled down
00:01:02
Warhammer epic first got released by
00:01:04
Games Workshop in 1988 and it was from
00:01:07
what I can gather as I was non-existent
00:01:10
at the time quite popular and now it's
00:01:13
back but only for Horus heresy ER Min so
00:01:16
no giant stumpers or Orcs for now but
00:01:18
still yay and for some people including
00:01:21
myself epic scale is a dream come true
00:01:25
because I can finally paint an entire
00:01:27
Squad of Miniatures in a day and I can
00:01:30
finally afford that Titan that I've
00:01:32
always wanted if I just pretend it's
00:01:34
really far away but for others the idea
00:01:37
of painting a miniature miniature
00:01:39
miniature or just regular scale
00:01:41
Warhammer Miniatures in general is
00:01:44
understandably a little bit daunting
00:01:46
like we're already struggling to paint
00:01:49
the eyeballs on our Space Marines what
00:01:51
do you mean you've scaled them down so
00:01:53
much what are we supposed to do with
00:01:55
these well buddy I'm going to tell you
00:01:57
what we're going to do we're going to
00:01:58
sit down we're going to buckle up and
00:02:01
we're going to paint the world's most
00:02:03
detailed Warhammer Miniatures in the
00:02:05
world's smallest Warhammer scale and I'm
00:02:09
going to show you how
00:02:18
who so before I crack in and start
00:02:21
giving you all of my top tips for how to
00:02:24
push yourself into the tiny tiny
00:02:25
painting realm I want to do a quick FAQ
00:02:29
and answerers some questions I commonly
00:02:31
get whenever I post something
00:02:33
particularly tiny firstly no I do not
00:02:36
use a magnifying glass when I'm painting
00:02:38
epic scale Miniatures or any Miniatures
00:02:40
for that matter I bought one one time to
00:02:43
try out because it looks really cool but
00:02:46
honestly I just couldn't coordinate my
00:02:49
hands correctly under it and I gave up
00:02:51
after a while I just trust my eyes
00:02:54
mostly I also think it's really
00:02:55
important to point out that I do not
00:02:58
have perfect eyesight I actually have a
00:03:00
very mild glasses prescription and I
00:03:03
don't wear them as much as I should and
00:03:05
I definitely should be wearing them more
00:03:07
when I paint but what I'm trying to say
00:03:09
is that you definitely don't need some
00:03:11
kind of magical superpower 3030 Vision
00:03:15
eyeballs in order to pull off this type
00:03:18
of painting also I want to make it super
00:03:20
super clear that what I'm about to do
00:03:23
and show you on these epic scale
00:03:25
Miniatures definitely isn't normal
00:03:28
practice for painting them they're not
00:03:30
designed to be unattainably impossible
00:03:33
to paint or to make you feel like a bad
00:03:35
painter if you can't do the Perfect
00:03:38
Blend or Edge highlight on a power sword
00:03:41
smaller than a toothpick in fact these
00:03:43
minis look great painted neatly and
00:03:45
cleanly using just contrast paints and
00:03:48
when you have a whole bunch of them
00:03:49
together to make up a whole Army then
00:03:51
they look even better but despite that I
00:03:54
still think that the tips and hints I'm
00:03:56
going to give you in this video will
00:03:58
definitely help you push your painting
00:04:00
skills into the smaller scale even if
00:04:02
you're not planning on going as hard as
00:04:04
me also if any of the Miniatures that
00:04:06
you see in this video look cool to you
00:04:09
then I have done an entire lore video on
00:04:12
every single chapter that I painted in
00:04:14
this video which you can watch on my
00:04:16
YouTube now and as well as that after
00:04:18
this video airs I'm going to be putting
00:04:21
a vote out on my patreon where you can
00:04:23
vote for which one of these little guys
00:04:25
you like the best and I will release a
00:04:27
full painting tutorial on the one that
00:04:29
gets the most votes if you sign up to
00:04:31
patreon on the lowest tier then you will
00:04:33
get access to my Discord where we have a
00:04:36
super fun and quite large active hobby
00:04:39
community and at the Rogue tier and
00:04:41
higher you'll get access to a bunch of
00:04:44
exclusive content including Miniatures
00:04:46
bloopers and fulllength painting
00:04:48
tutorials and most of all I'll just be
00:04:51
very grateful that you chose to support
00:04:53
my channel so thank you also I know I'm
00:04:56
technically painting heresy era
00:04:58
Miniatures in for TK chapter colors I'm
00:05:01
doing it because I want to and I think
00:05:03
it's fun so please don't be tempted to
00:05:06
run to the comment section and explain
00:05:08
to me that what I'm doing isn't in the
00:05:10
lore or correct I'm just kind of going
00:05:12
by rule of cool so thank you so without
00:05:16
further Ado here are my top tips for how
00:05:19
to paint
00:05:22
tiny the first one I think is super
00:05:24
important no matter what your current
00:05:26
hobby project is and that is to be very
00:05:29
careful when prepping your miniature for
00:05:31
painting although there's little to no
00:05:33
assembly required on these particular
00:05:35
minis you will have to clean up the
00:05:37
little bits where you clip them off the
00:05:39
sprew and one wrong move with a craft
00:05:41
knife and these guys are going to be
00:05:43
losing limbs so make sure you're super
00:05:45
duper careful and try chipping off just
00:05:48
tiny tiny bits at a time instead of
00:05:51
gouging out a big chunk of your tiny guy
00:05:53
now it's time to prime your miniature
00:05:55
and trust me I hate priming it's my
00:05:58
least favorite part of painting a
00:06:00
miniature and more times than I'd like
00:06:02
to admit probably I have fallen victim
00:06:05
to spraying it wrong and it being all
00:06:08
dusty or being a bit too cakey or kind
00:06:11
of in the Middle where it starts to
00:06:13
crack and become shiny I don't even know
00:06:16
what that is I just hate priming and at
00:06:18
this scale in particular where one bad
00:06:20
move with a paintbrush can be the
00:06:21
difference between your Space Marine
00:06:23
having eyeballs and no eyeballs priming
00:06:25
is extra important my best tip for the
00:06:28
smoothest sailing when priming your
00:06:29
Miniatures is to firstly warm up your
00:06:32
can of primer I don't know what the
00:06:34
science is behind this but getting some
00:06:37
hot water and letting your spray can
00:06:38
have a little bit of a bath so the can
00:06:40
and its contents are nice and toasty
00:06:43
always makes my priming experience super
00:06:45
smooth and easy obviously don't go using
00:06:48
boiling water and boiling your spray can
00:06:51
and burning yourself and exploding your
00:06:53
primer that's a big no no just give it a
00:06:57
nice lukewarm to warm bath for around 2
00:07:00
to 3 minutes and then you got to shake
00:07:02
it then after you're done priming as
00:07:04
usual you should put your mini on
00:07:06
something you're happy to paint it on
00:07:08
I'm putting my little guys on the end of
00:07:10
some old brushes with just the tiniest
00:07:13
amount of super glue ever so I can
00:07:15
easily take them off and put them on a
00:07:17
different base later but whilst I'm
00:07:19
painting them I can still reach all the
00:07:21
little details and make things a little
00:07:23
bit easier for myself and then we're
00:07:25
going to spray them with our primer just
00:07:27
a little bit at a time and we're going
00:07:29
to constantly check to see if they're
00:07:30
fully coated between each of our little
00:07:33
sprays because trust me they need way
00:07:36
less primer than your may be used to
00:07:38
using with regular scale
00:07:41
Miniatures next up let's talk about
00:07:44
tools like I alluded to earlier I do use
00:07:48
technically custom brushes when I'm
00:07:50
painting epic scale Miniatures but I'm
00:07:53
probably making that sound way more
00:07:55
complicated and cooler than it is let me
00:07:57
explain here are two artist Opus 0000
00:08:00
size brushes one of my go-to favorite
00:08:03
brushes for painting details but as you
00:08:05
can see one of the heads is way way
00:08:08
smaller than the other I like to try and
00:08:11
take good care of my brushes and wash
00:08:13
and condition them regularly but over
00:08:16
time and with heavy heavy use this brush
00:08:19
has whittel down to maybe half the
00:08:20
bristles it originally had making it
00:08:23
perfect for those insanely minuscule
00:08:26
details like the edge highlight on an
00:08:28
epic Space Marine leg or the dotting of
00:08:31
an eye it isn't however suitable for
00:08:33
base coating Miniatures even at this
00:08:36
scale I always use a bigger brush to lay
00:08:38
down the colors and do my shading and
00:08:40
blending and stuff like that but for the
00:08:43
level of detail I'm going for here this
00:08:46
brush is actually pretty good also I do
00:08:49
not think that you even really need to
00:08:51
use this insanely messed up kind of tiny
00:08:54
brush in order to get the level of
00:08:56
detail I'm producing in this video in
00:08:58
fact one of my favorite painters ever
00:09:00
one time blew my mind by telling me he
00:09:03
doesn't use anything smaller than a size
00:09:05
one brush because it's the tip that
00:09:08
really matters and I can totally see
00:09:10
what he meant here if you take a look at
00:09:12
these two brushes the left is my custom
00:09:15
brush and the right is the same make but
00:09:17
a size zero even this size three if
00:09:20
taken care of produces a tip which is
00:09:23
similar to my super tiny brush but for
00:09:25
me personally I find it much easier to
00:09:28
produce the amount of detail I'm looking
00:09:30
for at this scale by using a much
00:09:32
smaller
00:09:34
brush of course the paint brushes you're
00:09:37
using to paint at the scale are very
00:09:39
important but so are the paints
00:09:41
themselves and honestly you can use
00:09:44
whatever paint range or brand you like
00:09:46
the best and you're most comfortable
00:09:48
using it honestly doesn't matter too
00:09:50
much and everyone has their personal
00:09:52
favorite for this project I used a mix
00:09:55
of Citadel Pro acry War colors and a
00:09:57
little bit of Bayo too but what actually
00:10:00
is important is the consistency of your
00:10:02
pains and I'm afraid to say that we have
00:10:05
all been lied to again this was
00:10:08
something revealed to me by a very wise
00:10:10
heavy metal painter who told me to stop
00:10:13
thinning my paints and I know right like
00:10:16
what am I saying am I trying to make
00:10:18
your minis look like a gunky mess well
00:10:20
no I'm trying to help you of course when
00:10:23
you're base coating a miniature you
00:10:25
should always build up your colors using
00:10:27
thin down Paints in 3 to four thin
00:10:29
layers especially on a miniature this
00:10:31
small where the details are so so fine
00:10:34
but when it comes down to things like
00:10:35
Edge highlighting you'll actually find
00:10:37
that you get a bit more control with
00:10:39
slightly thicker paints thinner paints
00:10:42
have a tendency to leak and spread out
00:10:44
just a little bit when applied and be
00:10:46
less controllable which on a larger
00:10:48
scale miniature is fine and probably not
00:10:51
noticeable but when you're trying to
00:10:53
paint a very Stark and Bold Edge
00:10:55
highlight smaller than your hair thinner
00:10:58
paints can be a real pain to work with
00:11:00
and make things look a little bit messy
00:11:03
and can even bleed out into your
00:11:04
recesses or the rest of your miniature
00:11:07
the way that I counteract this is that I
00:11:09
will still thin my paints and give them
00:11:11
a good mix on my palette but only just a
00:11:13
little bit so that it's not a gloopy
00:11:15
globule of paint at the end of my brush
00:11:18
then I'll load up my brush pretty well
00:11:20
with the paint so that it's not drying
00:11:21
before I hit the miniature and then I'll
00:11:23
quickly use my thumb my nail hand or
00:11:26
whatever else I have on me to check and
00:11:28
make sure there's not too much product
00:11:30
on the brush see what kind of line I'm
00:11:32
making and ensure that there is a good
00:11:34
fine tip at the end then I let rip and
00:11:37
do my best to get those small clean
00:11:39
lines on my miniature which brings us
00:11:41
onto the next challenge you're going to
00:11:43
face when painting super tiny details
00:11:45
which is how to steady yourself and your
00:11:48
miniature whilst you're
00:11:51
painting one of the most common things I
00:11:54
hear from miniature painters is that
00:11:56
they feel like they're a little bit too
00:11:58
shaky or a little bit too unstable to be
00:12:00
able to achieve those very very crisp
00:12:03
and clean lines that we Envy on our
00:12:05
favorite painters for some people the
00:12:08
shaking may be a medical condition which
00:12:10
unfortunately exasperates their
00:12:12
difficulty to paint Miniatures but for
00:12:14
most of us a little bit of shaking is
00:12:17
very common and is just something our
00:12:19
bodies naturally kind of do unless
00:12:22
you're a master heart surgeon it's very
00:12:24
unlikely that you have perfectly stable
00:12:27
hands and personally I do struggle
00:12:30
myself occasionally with quite shaky
00:12:32
hands and it's mostly because I'm
00:12:34
spending 3 to four hours a day tightly
00:12:37
gripping a painting handle and a
00:12:39
painting brush whilst concentrating very
00:12:42
very hard what I tried to do to
00:12:43
counteract this is to use my hands elbow
00:12:46
body and the table I'm working on to try
00:12:49
and steady myself as much as possible
00:12:51
whilst I'm painting firstly I tend to
00:12:53
try and lean forward and rest my elbows
00:12:56
on the table whilst I'm painting this
00:12:58
will help a bunch of your problems
00:13:00
already as you'll no longer be floating
00:13:02
around in midair letting gravity pull
00:13:05
your hand and mini around as you're
00:13:06
painting then for these epic scale
00:13:08
Miniatures which I have perched on these
00:13:11
tiny brushes I then further Steady My
00:13:13
Hands by resting my hands on my hands
00:13:17
it's hard to explain but have a look at
00:13:19
this weird mangled mess of digits I've
00:13:21
double secured myself at my elbows and
00:13:24
then again with my hands and I am now
00:13:27
very very steady compared to me just
00:13:29
floating around in space if you also
00:13:32
have wobbly hands like me then give
00:13:35
these tips a go to try and steady
00:13:36
yourself but as always please end up
00:13:39
picking a position that you feel most
00:13:41
comfortable
00:13:43
in once you're all settled in it's kind
00:13:46
of important to know your own strength
00:13:49
when you're painting especially when
00:13:50
you're painting teeny tiny details and
00:13:53
by that I mean kind of be aware of how
00:13:56
much pressure you're putting behind your
00:13:58
brush as you go into paint if you're
00:14:01
painting something as Tiny as a liio
00:14:03
imperialis marine like I am here you
00:14:06
have to be aware that every single
00:14:08
millimeter of detail matters and what is
00:14:11
a tiny slip up on a normalized Space
00:14:13
Marine can ruin a miniature of this
00:14:16
scale if you're quite heavy-handed try
00:14:18
being extra extra gentle when you go in
00:14:21
to paint your miniature hold back a
00:14:23
little bit and wait for your brush tip
00:14:25
to make contact with the miniature then
00:14:27
judge from where you see it and how best
00:14:29
to move your hand to get the detail that
00:14:32
you want also remember that the harder
00:14:34
you press with a brush the thicker a
00:14:36
line you will produce on your miniature
00:14:38
and when you're painting something as
00:14:39
small as this where the recesses and
00:14:41
highlights are very very fine it's
00:14:43
always better to start soft and work
00:14:46
your way up to more pressure if you
00:14:48
think you need
00:14:50
to now that you're a little bit more
00:14:52
comfy with the process of painting
00:14:54
itself let's have a little chat about
00:14:56
how to make your tiny tiny miniature pop
00:14:59
even at a distance as with any miniature
00:15:02
that you want to stand out you'll be
00:15:04
manipulating color and contrast to give
00:15:07
you the best possible results and that's
00:15:09
especially important when you're
00:15:11
painting something as small as a liio
00:15:13
imperialis Space Marine let's have a
00:15:15
little look at the Rainbow Warrior I
00:15:17
painted as our first example Rainbow
00:15:19
Warriors the way I like to paint them
00:15:21
are mostly a mid-toned saturated blue
00:15:24
color with just a few extra colorful
00:15:26
stripes here and there the way I made
00:15:28
this Min stand out and look like this as
00:15:30
opposed to this is through color and
00:15:33
contrast once I had base coated the
00:15:35
Space Marine I spent quite a bit of time
00:15:37
carefully painting the recesses of the
00:15:40
miniature almost black and then I
00:15:42
highlighted each sharp edge and corner
00:15:44
with an almost whitish blue the end
00:15:47
result is that each individual panel is
00:15:49
more pronounced and stands out way more
00:15:51
at a distance due to the super dark
00:15:54
darks and the very light lights creating
00:15:56
a powerful contrast the Lament was
00:15:59
slightly trickier to make readable from
00:16:01
afar because it's overall a very light
00:16:04
yellow which usually on a larg marine
00:16:06
you would shade using at the most a
00:16:08
saturated orange but again the
00:16:10
difference between lightly shading and
00:16:12
deeply shading this color scheme at this
00:16:15
scale would probably be this and this
00:16:18
and personally I think the one which I
00:16:20
painted looks much more readable from
00:16:22
afar due to the fact that once again I
00:16:25
defined all of the panels with a deeper
00:16:27
brown color and highlighted them with a
00:16:29
very intense almost white color and even
00:16:33
on the almost black color scheme of the
00:16:35
dark Krakens I still tried to make the
00:16:37
mini more readable by again going really
00:16:40
really hard on the bright Edge
00:16:42
highlights around the smaller details
00:16:44
like the eyes and the little rivets on
00:16:46
the shoulders of each of the Space
00:16:47
Marines that I painted I lined them all
00:16:50
using black to really pop them out from
00:16:52
the rest of the mini when they were
00:16:54
painted and I think that this is a
00:16:56
really effective way to make these guys
00:16:57
stand out just just a little bit more in
00:17:00
spite of their tiny
00:17:03
size like I said earlier I'm fairly sure
00:17:06
that nobody's eyesight is so perfect
00:17:08
that they can just paint the eye lenses
00:17:10
on an epic scale Space Marine and be
00:17:13
confident that they made zero mistakes
00:17:15
and it's absolutely perfect so my next
00:17:17
tip is to try and find a way that you
00:17:20
can check your work in a little bit more
00:17:22
detail and refine it based on what you
00:17:24
see and to do this I like to use my
00:17:27
camera phone when I done a detail such
00:17:29
as a chapter symbol a Power sword or
00:17:32
even some ey lenses there's only so much
00:17:35
that I can see with my naked eye so I'll
00:17:38
take a nice big picture of the Mini on
00:17:40
my phone so I can zoom in and then oops
00:17:42
I'll realize that what I thought was a
00:17:44
perfect ey lens is actually a bit of a
00:17:47
mess and it has a huge mysterious hair
00:17:50
attached to it too then from there I
00:17:52
know exactly what part to focus on even
00:17:54
if it's hard to see with my weak human
00:17:57
eyes and I can Rectify that mistake as
00:17:59
best I can which brings me onto
00:18:01
something very very important to
00:18:03
remember when you're doing a dumb little
00:18:05
painting challenge like this or pushing
00:18:07
yourself to try something new or even
00:18:10
pouring your heart and soul into any
00:18:12
project and that's knowing when to
00:18:17
stop firstly like I said this little
00:18:20
liio imperialis passion project I'm
00:18:22
doing is just a little bit of fun I'm
00:18:25
having to make a few centerpiece
00:18:27
Miniatures and I don't think I recommend
00:18:30
spending this amount of time if you have
00:18:32
a whole Army to paint of course you can
00:18:35
but I think I averaged about 2 to three
00:18:38
hours per Space Marine doing this
00:18:40
project and if you have 400 of them then
00:18:44
maybe that's not entirely feasible if
00:18:47
like me you're doing this as a fun
00:18:49
little challenge or you want your
00:18:51
character or centerpiece miniature to
00:18:53
really stand out then by all means go
00:18:55
super hard but please don't burn
00:18:58
yourself yourself out trying to make 400
00:19:00
of these guys perfect remember that the
00:19:03
more you have together the more
00:19:05
impressive your army will look and
00:19:07
secondly and maybe most realistically is
00:19:10
that if you keep painting over tiny tiny
00:19:13
details and you keep refining them with
00:19:15
more and more layers of paint you'll
00:19:17
find that those tiny details start to
00:19:20
disappear due to the scale of these
00:19:22
Miniatures in particular the recesses
00:19:24
and details are ridiculously small and
00:19:27
if you paint a helmet and you decide you
00:19:29
don't like it and then you paint it
00:19:31
again that's fine if you're careful and
00:19:33
you use nice thin paints but if you
00:19:35
paint that helmet three or four times or
00:19:38
more you may find those nice defined
00:19:41
details become a little bit of a blob so
00:19:44
remember especially if you're painting
00:19:46
epic scale that it doesn't need to be
00:19:48
perfect if you're painting a whole Army
00:19:50
of them and you have one and you think
00:19:52
it's good enough then it probably is and
00:19:55
you can move on to your next
00:19:57
miniature
00:19:59
and the final tip for this video is
00:20:01
simply to practice you can use all of or
00:20:04
even a few of these tips I gave you
00:20:06
today to paint epic scale minis or any
00:20:09
miniature that you really want to push
00:20:11
yourself to make more detailed but as
00:20:13
usual the more of these little guys that
00:20:15
you paint the better you'll get and the
00:20:17
more you'll learn from your mistakes
00:20:19
you'll learn how much pressure to use
00:20:21
when you do a highlight and how thick
00:20:23
your paint should be and how best to
00:20:25
move your hand to get at those tricky
00:20:27
angles and after some time and a little
00:20:29
bit of practice I promise you'll be
00:20:31
super pleased with the results you get
00:20:33
and with that I'm afraid that's all we
00:20:35
have time for today I really hope you
00:20:37
enjoyed this video and as usual thank
00:20:40
you for being Rogues I'll see you in the
00:20:42
next one
00:20:44
bye
