ever wanted to paint a little guy or a00:00:53
tank or even a Titan but little tiny and00:00:57
that's essentially all Epic scale is00:00:59
it's just massively scaled down00:01:02
Warhammer epic first got released by00:01:04
Games Workshop in 1988 and it was from00:01:07
what I can gather as I was non-existent00:01:10
at the time quite popular and now it's00:01:13
back but only for Horus heresy ER Min so00:01:16
no giant stumpers or Orcs for now but00:01:18
still yay and for some people including00:01:21
myself epic scale is a dream come true00:01:25
because I can finally paint an entire00:01:27
Squad of Miniatures in a day and I can00:01:30
finally afford that Titan that I've00:01:32
always wanted if I just pretend it's00:01:34
really far away but for others the idea00:01:37
of painting a miniature miniature00:01:39
miniature or just regular scale00:01:41

understandably a little bit daunting00:01:46

eyeballs in order to pull off this type00:03:18

Miniatures definitely isn't normal00:03:28
practice for painting them they're not00:03:30
designed to be unattainably impossible00:03:33
to paint or to make you feel like a bad00:03:35
painter if you can't do the Perfect00:03:38
Blend or Edge highlight on a power sword00:03:41
smaller than a toothpick in fact these00:03:43
minis look great painted neatly and00:03:45
cleanly using just contrast paints and00:03:48
when you have a whole bunch of them00:03:49
together to make up a whole Army then00:03:51
they look even better but despite that I00:03:54
still think that the tips and hints I'm00:03:56

to paint00:05:22
tiny the first one I think is super00:05:24
important no matter what your current00:05:26
hobby project is and that is to be very00:05:29
careful when prepping your miniature for00:05:31
painting although there's little to no00:05:33
assembly required on these particular00:05:35
minis you will have to clean up the00:05:37
little bits where you clip them off the00:05:39
sprew and one wrong move with a craft00:05:41
knife and these guys are going to be00:05:43
losing limbs so make sure you're super00:05:45
duper careful and try chipping off just00:05:48
tiny tiny bits at a time instead of00:05:51
gouging out a big chunk of your tiny guy00:05:53
now it's time to prime your miniature00:05:55
and trust me I hate priming it's my00:05:58
least favorite part of painting a00:06:00
miniature and more times than I'd like00:06:02
to admit probably I have fallen victim00:06:05
to spraying it wrong and it being all00:06:08
dusty or being a bit too cakey or kind00:06:11
of in the Middle where it starts to00:06:13
crack and become shiny I don't even know00:06:16
what that is I just hate priming and at00:06:18
this scale in particular where one bad00:06:20
move with a paintbrush can be the00:06:21
difference between your Space Marine00:06:23
having eyeballs and no eyeballs priming00:06:25
is extra important my best tip for the00:06:28
smoothest sailing when priming your00:06:29
Miniatures is to firstly warm up your00:06:32
can of primer I don't know what the00:06:34
science is behind this but getting some00:06:37
hot water and letting your spray can00:06:38
have a little bit of a bath so the can00:06:40
and its contents are nice and toasty00:06:43
always makes my priming experience super00:06:45
smooth and easy obviously don't go using00:06:48
boiling water and boiling your spray can00:06:51
and burning yourself and exploding your00:06:53
primer that's a big no no just give it a00:06:57
nice lukewarm to warm bath for around 200:07:00
to 3 minutes and then you got to shake00:07:02
it then after you're done priming as00:07:04
usual you should put your mini on00:07:06
something you're happy to paint it on00:07:08
I'm putting my little guys on the end of00:07:10
some old brushes with just the tiniest00:07:13
amount of super glue ever so I can00:07:15
easily take them off and put them on a00:07:17
different base later but whilst I'm00:07:19
painting them I can still reach all the00:07:21
little details and make things a little00:07:23
bit easier for myself and then we're00:07:25
going to spray them with our primer just00:07:27
a little bit at a time and we're going00:07:29
to constantly check to see if they're00:07:30
fully coated between each of our little00:07:33
sprays because trust me they need way00:07:36
less primer than your may be used to00:07:38
using with regular scale00:07:41
Miniatures next up let's talk about00:07:44
tools like I alluded to earlier I do use00:07:48
technically custom brushes when I'm00:07:50
painting epic scale Miniatures but I'm00:07:53
probably making that sound way more00:07:55
complicated and cooler than it is let me00:07:57
explain here are two artist Opus 000000:08:00
size brushes one of my go-to favorite00:08:03
brushes for painting details but as you00:08:05
can see one of the heads is way way00:08:08
smaller than the other I like to try and00:08:11
take good care of my brushes and wash00:08:13
and condition them regularly but over00:08:16
time and with heavy heavy use this brush00:08:19
has whittel down to maybe half the00:08:20
bristles it originally had making it00:08:23
perfect for those insanely minuscule00:08:26
details like the edge highlight on an00:08:28
epic Space Marine leg or the dotting of00:08:31
an eye it isn't however suitable for00:08:33
base coating Miniatures even at this00:08:36
scale I always use a bigger brush to lay00:08:38
down the colors and do my shading and00:08:40
blending and stuff like that but for the00:08:43
level of detail I'm going for here this00:08:46
brush is actually pretty good also I do00:08:49
not think that you even really need to00:08:51
use this insanely messed up kind of tiny00:08:54
brush in order to get the level of00:08:56
detail I'm producing in this video in00:08:58
fact one of my favorite painters ever00:09:00
one time blew my mind by telling me he00:09:03
doesn't use anything smaller than a size00:09:05
one brush because it's the tip that00:09:08
really matters and I can totally see00:09:10
what he meant here if you take a look at00:09:12
these two brushes the left is my custom00:09:15
brush and the right is the same make but00:09:17
a size zero even this size three if00:09:20
taken care of produces a tip which is00:09:23
similar to my super tiny brush but for00:09:25
me personally I find it much easier to00:09:28
produce the amount of detail I'm looking00:09:30
for at this scale by using a much00:09:32
smaller00:09:34
brush of course the paint brushes you're00:09:37
using to paint at the scale are very00:09:39
important but so are the paints00:09:41
themselves and honestly you can use00:09:44
whatever paint range or brand you like00:09:46
the best and you're most comfortable00:09:48
using it honestly doesn't matter too00:09:50
much and everyone has their personal00:09:52
favorite for this project I used a mix00:09:55
of Citadel Pro acry War colors and a00:09:57
little bit of Bayo too but what actually00:10:00
is important is the consistency of your00:10:02
pains and I'm afraid to say that we have00:10:05
all been lied to again this was00:10:08
something revealed to me by a very wise00:10:10
heavy metal painter who told me to stop00:10:13
thinning my paints and I know right like00:10:16
what am I saying am I trying to make00:10:18
your minis look like a gunky mess well00:10:20
no I'm trying to help you of course when00:10:23
you're base coating a miniature you00:10:25
should always build up your colors using00:10:27
thin down Paints in 3 to four thin00:10:29
layers especially on a miniature this00:10:31
small where the details are so so fine00:10:34
but when it comes down to things like00:10:35
Edge highlighting you'll actually find00:10:37
that you get a bit more control with00:10:39
slightly thicker paints thinner paints00:10:42
have a tendency to leak and spread out00:10:44
just a little bit when applied and be00:10:46
less controllable which on a larger00:10:48
scale miniature is fine and probably not00:10:51
noticeable but when you're trying to00:10:53
paint a very Stark and Bold Edge00:10:55
highlight smaller than your hair thinner00:10:58
paints can be a real pain to work with00:11:00
and make things look a little bit messy00:11:03
and can even bleed out into your00:11:04
recesses or the rest of your miniature00:11:07
the way that I counteract this is that I00:11:09
will still thin my paints and give them00:11:11
a good mix on my palette but only just a00:11:13
little bit so that it's not a gloopy00:11:15
globule of paint at the end of my brush00:11:18
then I'll load up my brush pretty well00:11:20
with the paint so that it's not drying00:11:21
before I hit the miniature and then I'll00:11:23
quickly use my thumb my nail hand or00:11:26
whatever else I have on me to check and00:11:28
make sure there's not too much product00:11:30
on the brush see what kind of line I'm00:11:32
making and ensure that there is a good00:11:34
fine tip at the end then I let rip and00:11:37
do my best to get those small clean00:11:39
lines on my miniature which brings us00:11:41
onto the next challenge you're going to00:11:43
face when painting super tiny details00:11:45
which is how to steady yourself and your00:11:48
miniature whilst you're00:11:51
painting one of the most common things I00:11:54
hear from miniature painters is that00:11:56
they feel like they're a little bit too00:11:58
shaky or a little bit too unstable to be00:12:00
able to achieve those very very crisp00:12:03
and clean lines that we Envy on our00:12:05
favorite painters for some people the00:12:08
shaking may be a medical condition which00:12:10
unfortunately exasperates their00:12:12
difficulty to paint Miniatures but for00:12:14
most of us a little bit of shaking is00:12:17
very common and is just something our00:12:19
bodies naturally kind of do unless00:12:22
you're a master heart surgeon it's very00:12:24
unlikely that you have perfectly stable00:12:27
hands and personally I do struggle00:12:30
myself occasionally with quite shaky00:12:32
hands and it's mostly because I'm00:12:34
spending 3 to four hours a day tightly00:12:37
gripping a painting handle and a00:12:39
painting brush whilst concentrating very00:12:42
very hard what I tried to do to00:12:43
counteract this is to use my hands elbow00:12:46
body and the table I'm working on to try00:12:49
and steady myself as much as possible00:12:51
whilst I'm painting firstly I tend to00:12:53
try and lean forward and rest my elbows00:12:56
on the table whilst I'm painting this00:12:58
will help a bunch of your problems00:13:00
already as you'll no longer be floating00:13:02
around in midair letting gravity pull00:13:05
your hand and mini around as you're00:13:06
painting then for these epic scale00:13:08
Miniatures which I have perched on these00:13:11
tiny brushes I then further Steady My00:13:13
Hands by resting my hands on my hands00:13:17
it's hard to explain but have a look at00:13:19
this weird mangled mess of digits I've00:13:21
double secured myself at my elbows and00:13:24
then again with my hands and I am now00:13:27
very very steady compared to me just00:13:29
floating around in space if you also00:13:32
have wobbly hands like me then give00:13:35
these tips a go to try and steady00:13:36
yourself but as always please end up00:13:39
picking a position that you feel most00:13:41
comfortable00:13:43
in once you're all settled in it's kind00:13:46
of important to know your own strength00:13:49
when you're painting especially when00:13:50
you're painting teeny tiny details and00:13:53
by that I mean kind of be aware of how00:13:56
much pressure you're putting behind your00:13:58
brush as you go into paint if you're00:14:01
painting something as Tiny as a liio00:14:03
imperialis marine like I am here you00:14:06
have to be aware that every single00:14:08
millimeter of detail matters and what is00:14:11
a tiny slip up on a normalized Space00:14:13
Marine can ruin a miniature of this00:14:16
scale if you're quite heavy-handed try00:14:18
being extra extra gentle when you go in00:14:21
to paint your miniature hold back a00:14:23
little bit and wait for your brush tip00:14:25
to make contact with the miniature then00:14:27
judge from where you see it and how best00:14:29
to move your hand to get the detail that00:14:32
you want also remember that the harder00:14:34
you press with a brush the thicker a00:14:36
line you will produce on your miniature00:14:38
and when you're painting something as00:14:39
small as this where the recesses and00:14:41
highlights are very very fine it's00:14:43
always better to start soft and work00:14:46
your way up to more pressure if you00:14:48
think you need00:14:50
to now that you're a little bit more00:14:52
comfy with the process of painting00:14:54
itself let's have a little chat about00:14:56
how to make your tiny tiny miniature pop00:14:59
even at a distance as with any miniature00:15:02
that you want to stand out you'll be00:15:04
manipulating color and contrast to give00:15:07
you the best possible results and that's00:15:09
especially important when you're00:15:11
painting something as small as a liio00:15:13
imperialis Space Marine let's have a00:15:15
little look at the Rainbow Warrior I00:15:17
painted as our first example Rainbow00:15:19
Warriors the way I like to paint them00:15:21
are mostly a mid-toned saturated blue00:15:24
color with just a few extra colorful00:15:26
stripes here and there the way I made00:15:28
this Min stand out and look like this as00:15:30
opposed to this is through color and00:15:33
contrast once I had base coated the00:15:35
Space Marine I spent quite a bit of time00:15:37
carefully painting the recesses of the00:15:40
miniature almost black and then I00:15:42
highlighted each sharp edge and corner00:15:44
with an almost whitish blue the end00:15:47
result is that each individual panel is00:15:49
more pronounced and stands out way more00:15:51
at a distance due to the super dark00:15:54
darks and the very light lights creating00:15:56
a powerful contrast the Lament was00:15:59
slightly trickier to make readable from00:16:01
afar because it's overall a very light00:16:04
yellow which usually on a larg marine00:16:06
you would shade using at the most a00:16:08
saturated orange but again the00:16:10
difference between lightly shading and00:16:12
deeply shading this color scheme at this00:16:15
scale would probably be this and this00:16:18
and personally I think the one which I00:16:20
painted looks much more readable from00:16:22
afar due to the fact that once again I00:16:25
defined all of the panels with a deeper00:16:27
brown color and highlighted them with a00:16:29
very intense almost white color and even00:16:33
on the almost black color scheme of the00:16:35
dark Krakens I still tried to make the00:16:37
mini more readable by again going really00:16:40
really hard on the bright Edge00:16:42
highlights around the smaller details00:16:44
like the eyes and the little rivets on00:16:46
the shoulders of each of the Space00:16:47
Marines that I painted I lined them all00:16:50
using black to really pop them out from00:16:52
the rest of the mini when they were00:16:54
painted and I think that this is a00:16:56
really effective way to make these guys00:16:57
stand out just just a little bit more in00:17:00
spite of their tiny00:17:03
size like I said earlier I'm fairly sure00:17:06
that nobody's eyesight is so perfect00:17:08
that they can just paint the eye lenses00:17:10
on an epic scale Space Marine and be00:17:13
confident that they made zero mistakes00:17:15
and it's absolutely perfect so my next00:17:17
tip is to try and find a way that you00:17:20
can check your work in a little bit more00:17:22
detail and refine it based on what you00:17:24
see and to do this I like to use my00:17:27
camera phone when I done a detail such00:17:29
as a chapter symbol a Power sword or00:17:32
even some ey lenses there's only so much00:17:35
that I can see with my naked eye so I'll00:17:38
take a nice big picture of the Mini on00:17:40
my phone so I can zoom in and then oops00:17:42
I'll realize that what I thought was a00:17:44
perfect ey lens is actually a bit of a00:17:47
mess and it has a huge mysterious hair00:17:50
attached to it too then from there I00:17:52
know exactly what part to focus on even00:17:54
if it's hard to see with my weak human00:17:57
eyes and I can Rectify that mistake as00:17:59
best I can which brings me onto00:18:01
something very very important to00:18:03
remember when you're doing a dumb little00:18:05
painting challenge like this or pushing00:18:07
yourself to try something new or even00:18:10
pouring your heart and soul into any00:18:12
project and that's knowing when to00:18:17
stop firstly like I said this little00:18:20
liio imperialis passion project I'm00:18:22
doing is just a little bit of fun I'm00:18:25
having to make a few centerpiece00:18:27
Miniatures and I don't think I recommend00:18:30
spending this amount of time if you have00:18:32
a whole Army to paint of course you can00:18:35
but I think I averaged about 2 to three00:18:38
hours per Space Marine doing this00:18:40
project and if you have 400 of them then00:18:44
maybe that's not entirely feasible if00:18:47
like me you're doing this as a fun00:18:49
little challenge or you want your00:18:51
character or centerpiece miniature to00:18:53
really stand out then by all means go00:18:55
super hard but please don't burn00:18:58
yourself yourself out trying to make 40000:19:00
of these guys perfect remember that the00:19:03
more you have together the more00:19:05
impressive your army will look and00:19:07
secondly and maybe most realistically is00:19:10
that if you keep painting over tiny tiny00:19:13
details and you keep refining them with00:19:15
more and more layers of paint you'll00:19:17
find that those tiny details start to00:19:20
disappear due to the scale of these00:19:22
Miniatures in particular the recesses00:19:24
and details are ridiculously small and00:19:27
if you paint a helmet and you decide you00:19:29
don't like it and then you paint it00:19:31
again that's fine if you're careful and00:19:33
you use nice thin paints but if you00:19:35
paint that helmet three or four times or00:19:38
more you may find those nice defined00:19:41
details become a little bit of a blob so00:19:44
remember especially if you're painting00:19:46
epic scale that it doesn't need to be00:19:48
perfect if you're painting a whole Army00:19:50
of them and you have one and you think00:19:52
it's good enough then it probably is and00:19:55
you can move on to your next00:19:57
miniature00:19:59
and the final tip for this video is00:20:01
simply to practice you can use all of or00:20:04
even a few of these tips I gave you00:20:06
today to paint epic scale minis or any00:20:09
miniature that you really want to push00:20:11
yourself to make more detailed but as00:20:13
usual the more of these little guys that00:20:15
you paint the better you'll get and the00:20:17
more you'll learn from your mistakes00:20:19
you'll learn how much pressure to use00:20:21
when you do a highlight and how thick00:20:23
your paint should be and how best to00:20:25
move your hand to get at those tricky00:20:27
angles and after some time and a little00:20:29
bit of practice I promise you'll be00:20:31
