ELON MUSK HAS GOTTEN A LOT OF FLAK FOR THINGS  HE’S SAID ON TWITTER. BUT WHAT HE’S NOT GETTING
00:00:05
ENOUGH FLAK FOR IS HIS IGNORANT COMMENTS ON CHINA. Welcome to China Uncensored, I’m Chris Chappell.
00:00:13
So Elon Musk styles himself  a champion of free speech.
00:00:17
He claims to be a “free speech absolutist.”
00:00:20
And to hear him tell it, he doesn’t censor  himself, even when money is on the line.
00:00:25
Musk: I’ll say what I want to say and if  the consequence of that is losing money,
00:00:30
so be it. Faber: OK
00:00:33
Recently, when a number of companies  pulled advertising from X in response to
00:00:37
Musk agreeing with what they claimed was  an antisemitic post, he had this to say.
00:00:44
Musk: Don’t advertise. Andrew Ross Sorkin: You don’t
00:00:46
want them to advertise? Musk: No.
00:00:47
Ross Sorkin: What do you mean? Musk: If someone’s going to
00:00:51
try to blackmail me with advertising,  blackmail me with money, go **** yourself.
00:00:57
And when he decided last week to reinstate Alex  Jones on X, he said “are we a platform that
00:01:04
believes in freedom of speech or are we not?”  and that “principles matter more than money.”
00:01:10
That all sounds great, and, in many ways, X  has become much more free speech friendly since
00:01:16
Musk took over. But there are plenty of signs  that his “free speech absolutism” stops at the
00:01:22
Chinese border.Recently, Musk was asked if he’s  being hypocritical by doing business in China,
00:01:28
considering his stance on free speech. Ross Sorkin: How do you feel about,
00:01:33
some people would say is it hypocritical  for you to be doing business in China
00:01:38
or, in frankly, in other countries  as it relates to X and other things,
00:01:41
that don’t follow this free speech  path that you have espoused.
00:01:46
Listen to how he dodges that question. Musk: Well first of all, Starlink and SpaceX do,
00:01:53
are, no business in China whatsoever. Tesla has  one of four factories, four vehicle factories,
00:02:01
in China, and China is, you know, I  don’t know, a quarter of our market,
00:02:06
or something like that. And so it’s a quarter  of a market of one company. The same is true,
00:02:11
by the way, of all the other car companies.
00:02:14
Okay, so only one of your companies does business  in China. It still does business in China,
00:02:21
which is led by a repressive regime. That doesn’t  sound very much like free speech absolutism.
00:02:27
Also, according to China  Passenger Car Association,
00:02:30
China accounts for more than  half of Tesla’s global sales.
00:02:35
So China isn’t just a fraction of the sales of one  of his companies. If Tesla couldn’t sell to the
00:02:41
China market, it would *sink* Tesla, which could  explain Musk’s lackluster answer. In addition,
00:02:48
“Tesla has been winning various concessions  from local [Chinese] authorities ranging from
00:02:52
approvals to preferential loans”.And lets not  forget the tax breaks, and Chinese government
00:02:58
subsidies that he’s gotten there. It sounds  like a little tiny bit more than just “hey,
00:03:04
Tesla does some business in China.” Further, other car companies may do business with
00:03:10
China, but they aren’t led by self-styled free  speech absolutists, so they don’t have to worry
00:03:15
about whether or not they’re being hypocritical. Musk goes on.
00:03:19
“I can only do things that are within the  bounds of the law. I cannot do beyond that.
00:03:24
My aspiration is to do as much good as possible  and be as productive as possible within the bounds
00:03:28
of what is legal.”The last time I checked,  it’s perfectly legal to simply choose not to
00:03:34
do business in China. But Musk has gone farther  than most other companies in normalizing China’s
00:03:41
crimes against humanity.Last year, Tesla  opened a showroom in Xinjiang. The US and
00:03:46
several other countries have accused the Chinese  government of committing genocide in Xinjiang,
00:03:51
so opening a showroom there looks a lot like  whitewashing China’s crimes.Musk was also one
00:03:57
of the business leaders who gladhanded with  Xi Jinping during a dinner at APEC this year.
00:04:02
But it’s not just the way Musk dodges  responsibility for doing business in
00:04:06
China. Musk has also said a number of  things that are not only untrue but
00:04:12
that are straight out of the CCP’s propaganda  book. I’ll tell you what he said in a minute.
00:04:16
But first, when it comes to the news,
00:04:19
you want to make sure you’re getting all  the news, from multiple perspectives.
00:04:22
Like when it comes to Elon Musk,
00:04:24
there’s a lot of different perspectives  about him and his companies. Which is why
00:04:28
I used Ground News to see how he’s being  covered across the political spectrum.
00:04:33
Recently, after all those  advertisers pulled out of Twitter,
00:04:36
there’s been this story about how Elon Musk  supposedly promoted the Pizzagate theory.
00:04:41
Ground News shows how 24 different articles are
00:04:43
covering it—but most of them lean  left on the political spectrum.
00:04:47
It’s interesting to see how the narrative differs  depending on the source: “The left emphasizes the
00:04:53
controversy surrounding Musk's posts and their  promotion of conspiracy theories. In contrast,
00:04:58
the right focuses on the resurfacing of  debate about the Pizzagate controversy.”
00:05:03
You can also see more about the media covering  that story, for example how The Washington
00:05:07
Post is owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos,  has “mixed factuality”, and leans left.
00:05:13
This kind of context is why I use Ground News—to  see how topics are being covered by sources around
00:05:18
the world, sources that may have conflicting  motives, like to hurt a rival billionaire.
00:05:24
Ground News is on a mission to hold the media  accountable and provide context so we can see how
00:05:28
media narratives can easily shape public opinion.  It’s a great place to go if you want to be more
00:05:33
informed than the average newsreader and find  multiple perspectives that you might otherwise
00:05:38
have missed. And it’s also just really interesting  to see all the hidden biases in the media.
00:05:43
And that’s why we’re working with  Ground News to sponsor this video,
00:05:46
because we believe what  they’re doing is important.
00:05:49

00:05:55

00:05:59

00:06:04
And now, back to Musk’s China mistakes.  During the interview last month, not only
00:06:10
did Musk dodge questions about doing business  in China, but he also used CCP talking points.
00:06:15
For example, when asked if he thought TikTok  was a US national security threat, here’s what
00:06:22
he had to say.Ross Sorkin: but do you think the  Chinese government is using it to manipulate the
00:06:28
minds of Americans?Musk: No. Ross Sorkin: Is that something
00:06:30
that you think we should worry about? I mean you  have different states that are trying to ban it.
00:06:34
Musk: I don't think this is  some Chinese government plot.
00:06:38
Ohhh, but TikTok is being used by the  Chinese government. And not in a good way.
00:06:44
Just a few months ago, a  former employee of ByteDance,
00:06:47
which is the Chinese company that owns TikTok,  said that the Chinese government spied on Hong
00:06:51
Kong activists using TikTok.And this is  on top of a mountain of other evidence
00:06:57
that Chinese government censorship  is alive and well on the platform.
00:07:01
TikTok’s algorithm was created by  Chinese engineers, the same ones that
00:07:06
created the algorithm for China’s  version of TikTok, called Douyin.
00:07:10
So it certainly can’t be trusted. You can  bet that if the Chinese government can
00:07:14
tinker with the algorithm, to say, influence  an election, it’s going to try to do that.
00:07:20
That’s not all, though.
00:07:21
Musk’s comments on Taiwan were just as bad,
00:07:24
if not worse. I’ll tell you more,  after the break.Welcome back.
00:07:30
Elon Musk was recently asked about  how to avoid war over Taiwan.
00:07:34
In his response, he cites the Thucydides Trap,  which is a theory that says there will always
00:07:40
be war when a rising superpower displaces the  current superpower.Musk: So the United States
00:07:46
has been the most powerful economic engine in  the world longer than anyone’s been alive. And
00:07:58
the foundation of war is economics. So now we  have a situation in the case of China where the
00:08:10
economy is likely to be two, perhaps three times  larger than that of the US.That’s…flat out wrong.
00:08:19
First of all, even by official numbers, which  China usually doctors, China’s GDP is still behind
00:08:25
the US.Now, before Covid, a lot of economists  predicted China would overtake the US within a
00:08:31
decade. But now, a lot of economists are revising  their predictions because of major structural
00:08:37
issues in China’s economy that are now coming  home to roost.Moody’s recently downgraded China’s
00:08:43
credit rating from stable to negative because  of all of its debt,And the foreign investment,
00:08:48
which China desperately needs to get its economy  back on track, has been drying up.The government
00:08:54
has resorted to silencing economists who  give anything less than a rosy picture of
00:08:58
the economy.Which should give a pretty clear  idea of just how bad China’s economy is right
00:09:03
now.So either Musk hasn’t been paying attention  or he’s self-censoring to curry favor with the
00:09:09
Chinese regime. The other incredible claim he made  recently was that China isn’t interested in taking
00:09:16
over other countries. The good news is, the history  of China suggests that China is not inquisitive,
00:09:22
meaning they’re not going to go out and invade a  whole bunch of countries. Now they do feel very
00:09:27
strongly… So that’s good. I mean, because a lot  of very powerful countries have been inquisitive.
00:09:34
Okay, so one of the first things  the CCP did after taking over China,
00:09:38
was invading Tibet in 1950.Then it  twice attempted to invade Taiwan and
00:09:44
failed. That was called the first  and second Taiwan Strait Crisis.
00:09:48
In 1962 China invaded India. In 1979 China invaded
00:09:52
Vietnam. Neither of those  worked out great for China.
00:09:56
Today China has been illegally building entire  villages inside the borders of its neighbor,
00:10:01
Bhutan. And as recently as 2020, India  and China both lost soldiers after China
00:10:07
moved its troops past its de facto border with  India. Also, in a map released earlier this year,
00:10:15
China re-opened a territorial dispute with  Russia that had been a settled issue for years.
00:10:21
And for decades, it’s claimed almost the  entire South China Sea belongs to it, despite
00:10:26
international law saying otherwise. The country  is embroiled in its disputes with many of its
00:10:31
southeast Asian neighbors over the South China  sea. China claims almost all of the sea as its
00:10:38
territory, pointing to a 9-dash line that  first appeared on Chinese maps in 1953. But
00:10:45
the Philippines, Vietnam, Brunei, Taiwan and  Malaysia, also claim parts of these waters
00:10:51
as their own.In addition, China told the US  it wouldn’t militarize islands in the South
00:10:56
China Sea that both China and several other  countries claim. But then, a few years later,
00:11:01
it did just that. Then there’s the agreement China  had with the UK over Hong Kong. China said Hong
00:11:07
Kong could remain independent of the mainland for  50 years after the UK handed it over to China.
00:11:13
However, after just 23 years, however, it just  took over Hong KongSo when Musk says China
00:11:19
hasn’t been historically inquisitive, he’s either  really ignorant of history, or he’s playing dumb
00:11:24
to appease his Chinese overlords. Now, Musk does  acknowledge that China wants to take over Taiwan,
00:11:30
which has been an independent country for  over 70 years. But listen to how he frames it.
00:11:36
From their standpoint, it would be like  one of the states is not there like Hawaii
00:11:43
or something like that but more significant  than Hawaii, you know. And Hawaii is pretty
00:11:50
significant for us.Thanks for helping us better  understand the Communists, Elon. I wonder why
00:11:55
you don’t talk about Taiwan’s standpoint. It’s  also bogus. Hawaii has been a part of the US
00:12:01
since 1959. And except for a small secession  movement, it’s not trying to be an independent
00:12:06
country. Most Hawaiians like being American. Taiwan, on the other hand, does not see itself
00:12:12
as part of China. Most people there identify as  Taiwanese rather than Chinese, and their views of
00:12:19
China are mostly negative. The main reason Taiwan  isn’t part of China is because the majority of
00:12:25
Taiwanese people don’t want to be part of it.  And Taiwan is run completely independently.
00:12:32
The CCP likes to say that the real reason  Taiwan isn’t part of China is because the
00:12:37
United States is keeping them apart, and  Musk has echoed that idea.So they view
00:12:45
it as really that there’s a fundamental part  of China, the island of Formosa, now Taiwan,
00:12:54
that is not part of China, but should be. And  the only reason it hasn’t been is because the
00:13:00
US Pacific fleet. But that’s simply not accurate.  It’s true that the US military is probably the
00:13:05
main thing keeping China from invading. But  saying that really distorts the dynamic.
00:13:11
US policy on Taiwan says that if Taiwan  and China want to unite peacefully,
00:13:15
without any coercion or aggression, the US  wouldn’t stand in the way. Like I said before,
00:13:20
it’s Taiwan’s resistance to being part of  China that is the real reason they’re not
00:13:25
one country. Musk has also said in the  past that he thinks Taiwan should agree
00:13:30
to become a “special administrative zone” of  China to avoid a war.But he thinks that this
00:13:35
special administrative zone would somehow be  “more lenient than Hong Kong.”Since clearly
00:13:41
“leniency” was the problem with Hong Kong, not,  you know, China going back on its promises.
00:13:46
I don’t think China’s ever seen an  agreement it didn’t intend to break.
00:13:50
Of course, Taiwan wasn’t happy  with Musk’s “solution” to the
00:13:54
situation. Taiwan’s foreign minister  hit back that Taiwan wasn’t for sale.
00:13:58
And because of Musk’s comments on Taiwan,  Taiwan doesn’t trust him or his Starlink
00:14:03
satellites to provide internet to the  island in the event that China cuts its
00:14:07
internet cables. That’s why it’s now  working with a UK company to provide
00:14:12
internet in case of a blackout. Not that  China wants Starlink, either. In fact,
00:14:16
China’s putting pressure on Musk not to provide  internet to its citizens. Instead, it’s trying
00:14:21
to build its own satellite infrastructure to  counter Musk’s.So Musk doesn’t care about the
00:14:26
money. He says what he wants to say. Except when  it comes to China. Then he becomes really careful.
00:14:32
I wonder why. Now, I’ve got a
00:14:34
video I want to show you about that, but first,  check out this episode’s sponsor, Ground News.
00:14:39
Ground News is a great tool to help you  stay well informed about what’s happening
00:14:42
in the world—and how it’s being covered  by all sides of the political spectrum.
00:14:47
Check it out at ground dot news  slash china or click the link below.
00:14:52
And here’s that video I want to show  you. It’s about how you need to take
00:14:54
personal responsibility, and not blame  everyone else for your problems the
00:14:58
way a Communist would. YouTube might  consider that too controversial which
00:15:02
is why I’m hiding that message  in video game content, this time
00:15:06
about the disastrous release of the Day Before. https://youtu.be/FE1zF3cLxnM?si=Vg-eL-csneB-g8db)
00:15:08
Once again, I’m Chris Chappell. See you next time.
