Mosè non riesce a sopportare a lungo questi soprusi e, saltando addosso al guardiano, lo uccide. È costretto così a fuggire nel deserto perché il governatore di Pitom, scoperto l'accaduto, ha ordinato di arrestarlo. Finito così, dopo tanto peregrinare, in un'oasi, Mosè rincontra Loco e, mentre sta mangiando con lui, sente le urla di alcune donne. Corre a soccorrerle e le salva dagli assalti di alcuni pastori. Le fanciulle sono le sette figlie di Jetro, il sacerdote di Madian, che accoglie il giovane nella sua tenda. Mosè diventa così pastori delle greggi di Jetro e sposa una delle figlie del sacerdote, Sefora, dalla quale ha due figli, Gherson ed Eliezer. In Egitto intanto il vecchio faraone è morto ed ora Ramses, più superbo che mai, sopprime gli schiavi. Aronne insieme agli anziani d'Israele chiede a Dio di poter essere liberati. Il Signore ascolta le sue preghiere e si presenta a Mosè sotto forma di roveto ardente, ordinandogli di tornare in Egitto per liberare gli israeliti. Mosè in un primo momento sembra esitare ma poi accetta. Sceso a valle racconta tutto alla moglie e insieme a lei attraversa il deserto per tornare nella terra natia.
