00:00:10
so good afternoon everyone
00:00:13
so i want to start today off with a
00:00:14
question but i show hands who here
00:00:17
exercises for at least 30 minutes a day
00:00:20
five times a week
00:00:24
that's pretty impressive
00:00:26
awesome so according to the american
00:00:28
heart association that is actually the
00:00:30
recommended amount of exercise
00:00:33
per week
00:00:34
so nearly 80 percent of adult americans
00:00:37
don't meet this recommendation which can
00:00:39
potentially set themselves up for years
00:00:41
of health problems later down the road
00:00:44
so as a fitness professional one of the
00:00:46
most common things i hear
00:00:48
is
00:00:50
i don't have time
00:00:51
so let me tell you guys something about
00:00:53
time
00:00:54
every single one of you has 168 hours in
00:00:58
a week and i'm only asking for two and a
00:01:00
half hours
00:01:01
out of your week
00:01:03
and for what
00:01:04
to live a better life a healthier life
00:01:07
or even a longer life
00:01:09
these are all benefits that come with
00:01:11
exercise
00:01:14
fitness is a lifestyle this is not a
00:01:17
quick fix this is something you have to
00:01:19
incorporate into your daily regimen just
00:01:21
like brushing your teeth or taking a
00:01:24
shower
00:01:26
my name is vincent lamb and i started
00:01:28
exercising as a hobby
00:01:30
i went on to school and majored it in
00:01:32
college and now i'm doing it as a career
00:01:37
this is how the power fitness changed my
00:01:39
life
00:01:46
so i have five main points i want to
00:01:47
share with you guys today
00:01:49
we all know that exercise is an
00:01:51
important part of a healthy lifestyle
00:01:53
but what you may not know is just how
00:01:56
important it is
00:01:58
so these benefits may include
00:02:00
reducing serious health problems such as
00:02:02
chronic diseases
00:02:04
it may boost your brain functions so in
00:02:06
a sense it can make you smarter
00:02:08
it can improve your mental and as well
00:02:10
as emotional health
00:02:11
and make you more disciplined as a
00:02:13
person whether you're in school or even
00:02:15
at work
00:02:16
and lastly it will make you more
00:02:17
confident inside and out
00:02:21
so most people exercise because either a
00:02:24
they want to lose weight
00:02:26
they want to look better
00:02:28
or they have health issues
00:02:31
one of the reasons why i started working
00:02:33
out was because i wanted to impress the
00:02:36
girls
00:02:38
but
00:02:39
i then found out that the only people
00:02:41
that i really impressed were the other
00:02:42
dudes in the gym
00:02:45
so over the years
00:02:47
that changed now i exercise because i
00:02:49
love the challenge i love the sense of
00:02:51
accomplishment it gives me i love
00:02:53
watching my body transform
00:02:55
but most importantly i love inspiring
00:02:57
and helping others
00:03:01
so my first main point i want to talk to
00:03:03
you guys today is how exercise can
00:03:05
actually reduce
00:03:06
health problems such as these chronic
00:03:08
diseases listed above
00:03:10
obesity heart diseases diabetes
00:03:13
hypertension osteoporosis
00:03:16
and the list goes on
00:03:17
so by showing hands who here knows or
00:03:20
has someone with one of these diseases i
00:03:22
just mentioned
00:03:26
it's a lot
00:03:28
so without proper cam prevention all of
00:03:30
these diseases can actually be lethal
00:03:34
over one third of the population are
00:03:36
actually considered
00:03:37
obese which can lead to many of these
00:03:39
diseases that i just mentioned before
00:03:42
however this can all be prevented
00:03:44
through proper nutrition and exercise
00:03:48
so when you make so when you exercise
00:03:50
and make healthy food choices
00:03:52
what happens to your body
00:03:54
you will
00:03:55
put on muscle making your joints and
00:03:57
ligaments stronger you will be less
00:03:59
prone to injuries
00:04:01
and you'll
00:04:02
look ten times better
00:04:05
you will also lose fat in places that
00:04:07
you don't want like your arms your
00:04:09
stomach your legs your love handles
00:04:12
so not only do you lose fat on the
00:04:14
outside you will lose fat on the inside
00:04:17
this is the fat that surrounds our
00:04:19
organs and this is called visceral fat
00:04:22
visceral fat can cause many of these
00:04:24
chronic diseases listed above which can
00:04:26
be lethal
00:04:29
so i want to share with you guys a
00:04:32
perfect example
00:04:34
my father
00:04:35
was actually
00:04:37
kind of overweight he
00:04:39
was very unhealthy he had a very poor
00:04:42
diet
00:04:43
which led to diabetes
00:04:46
high blood pressure high cholesterol and
00:04:48
the list goes on
00:04:50
so
00:04:51
over the years he's made
00:04:54
better food choices however in these
00:04:57
last two months he wanted to change his
00:04:59
life around for the better
00:05:01
he started incorporating vegetables into
00:05:04
his every meal he started
00:05:07
eating
00:05:08
good sources of healthy fats he got good
00:05:11
sources of protein in
00:05:12
one thing he did take out were carbs
00:05:16
he took out
00:05:17
bread he took out rice he took out pasta
00:05:20
he even took out most fruits and the
00:05:22
results were actually staggering
00:05:26
he lost over 20 pounds
00:05:28
he stopped taking a lot of his
00:05:30
medication and even stopped taking his
00:05:32
insulin shots so by incorporating
00:05:34
exercise
00:05:36
and proper nutrition it can reverse
00:05:38
something as serious as
00:05:40
diabetes
00:05:42
so
00:05:43
he took out carbs because he was a
00:05:45
diabetic so i'm not trying to say carbs
00:05:47
are a bad thing you just have to make
00:05:49
sure that you're eating it in moderation
00:05:51
and making smart food choices
00:05:57
so my second point i want to talk to you
00:05:59
guys today is how exercise can actually
00:06:01
make you
00:06:02
smarter
00:06:03
so when you exercise your heart is going
00:06:05
to pump more oxygen into your brain and
00:06:08
throughout your body
00:06:11
so
00:06:12
from experience
00:06:14
a lot of the clients that i work with
00:06:16
always forget how to breathe when they
00:06:18
exercise
00:06:20
so in order to reap these benefits you
00:06:22
have to make sure you are breathing in
00:06:23
through your nose
00:06:25
and exhaling through your mouth
00:06:28
so when you do that your brain and body
00:06:30
release tons of hormones which will
00:06:32
provide a nourishing environment for the
00:06:34
growth of new brain cells
00:06:36
it may also act as a first aid kit on
00:06:39
damaged brain cells so in a sense
00:06:42
it's kind of healing your mind
00:06:45
if you incorporate exercise into your
00:06:47
daily regimen it will prepare you for
00:06:49
mental stresses that you encounter for
00:06:51
the rest of the day
00:06:53
it will also increase the retention of
00:06:54
your of new information
00:06:56
improving your memory and also giving
00:06:59
better reactions to complex situations
00:07:02
so not only does exercise
00:07:05
make you look better make you healthier
00:07:07
and may also make you more productive
00:07:09
whether you're at work or at school
00:07:16
so the third point i want to cover today
00:07:17
is how exercise can actually improve
00:07:20
your mental health
00:07:22
so it's not just about
00:07:24
how far you can run or how much you can
00:07:26
lift
00:07:27
exercise can improve you mentally as
00:07:29
well
00:07:30
it is vital for maintaining mental
00:07:33
fitness
00:07:35
so studies show that exercise can
00:07:37
actually treat depression
00:07:39
anxiety and stress
00:07:41
just as well as medication
00:07:43
without the side effects of course
00:07:46
so here's why exercise is so effective
00:07:48
when it comes to these types of problems
00:07:50
changes will start to happen in your
00:07:52
body
00:07:54
you will produce
00:07:55
more endorphins which are hormones that
00:07:57
make you feel good
00:07:58
it may also act as a natural painkiller
00:08:02
it can improve your alertness and
00:08:04
concentration
00:08:06
it will also improve your ability to
00:08:08
sleep so in a sense it will help you
00:08:10
relieve stress it can decrease overall
00:08:13
levels of tension whether it's in your
00:08:14
mind on your body
00:08:16
it may help elevate your mood making you
00:08:18
happier and lastly it'll give you plenty
00:08:21
of energy for you to use throughout the
00:08:23
day
00:08:25
so your mind and body works hand in hand
00:08:28
when one feels better so the other
00:08:34
so my next point i want to cover today
00:08:36
is discipline
00:08:38
with exercise comes all of those
00:08:41
intrinsic health benefits that i
00:08:42
mentioned earlier however in order to
00:08:45
reap all these benefits you have to make
00:08:47
sure that you are consistent as well as
00:08:49
discipline
00:08:52
so most people want to be healthy and
00:08:53
they want to live a long life right
00:08:56
so this doesn't happen by accident
00:08:59
most of the healthiest and happiest
00:09:00
people in the world all probably have
00:09:03
one thing in common and that is
00:09:05
discipline
00:09:06
living a healthy lifestyle takes
00:09:07
consistency and discipline
00:09:10
so first of all you will have to plan
00:09:12
your day accordingly you got to make
00:09:15
sure
00:09:16
you have enough time to incorporate
00:09:18
exercise into your daily regimen whether
00:09:19
it's in the morning in the afternoon
00:09:22
or even at night when you're really
00:09:24
tired
00:09:25
and this doesn't always have to be
00:09:28
boring it could be something that you
00:09:29
like it could be go out and playing
00:09:31
sports going for a hike going for a walk
00:09:34
or even taking a dance class with
00:09:35
someone you like
00:09:37
second you have to make sure that you're
00:09:39
you are making healthy food choices
00:09:42
you got to make sure you're eating good
00:09:43
sources of protein so that your muscles
00:09:45
can build and repair itself you got to
00:09:47
make sure you're incorporating healthy
00:09:49
fats into your diet so your hormones are
00:09:51
functioning properly you got to make
00:09:53
sure
00:09:54
you're having good sources of carbs so
00:09:56
that you have enough energy for you to
00:09:57
use throughout the day
00:09:59
and also your micronutrients which are
00:10:01
your vitamins and minerals
00:10:04
so all of this takes discipline however
00:10:06
this doesn't happen overnight it's a
00:10:09
journey
00:10:10
learn to love the things that are good
00:10:12
for you
00:10:14
discipline is a decision a decision that
00:10:17
says i will constantly do the things
00:10:19
that i need to do in order to reach my
00:10:21
goals sometimes this is easier said than
00:10:23
done the good news is is that discipline
00:10:26
is like a muscle the more you strive to
00:10:28
use it the easier it will be
00:10:30
discipline becomes habitual
00:10:33
so this brings me to my last point
00:10:36
confidence
00:10:38
so there's nothing better than seeing
00:10:40
your hard work pay off when you exercise
00:10:43
and you eat well you will start to see
00:10:45
physical and mental changes happen
00:10:47
throughout your body
00:10:49
being happy with how you look is
00:10:51
essential for confidence
00:10:54
when you feel good
00:10:55
when you look good you will feel good
00:10:57
you want to be happy with yourself no
00:10:59
matter where you are on your journey
00:11:03
your mindset will become healthier as
00:11:05
well as more positive it's going to be
00:11:07
easier for you to socialize with new
00:11:09
people
00:11:10
make new friends
00:11:12
and possibly open doors to new
00:11:13
opportunities new opportunities and new
00:11:15
connections may lead to new friendships
00:11:18
new relationships or even new careers
00:11:21
when you're confident this becomes
00:11:23
contagious
00:11:24
people would want to be around you they
00:11:26
can feel this
00:11:28
when more people around you this is the
00:11:30
opportunity for you to inspire and
00:11:32
motivate others
00:11:34
so i'm so passionate when it comes to
00:11:37
fitness that my friends and family see
00:11:39
the changes that i inspired within
00:11:41
myself and they want the same for
00:11:43
themselves
00:11:47
so speaking of friends and family this
00:11:49
is a picture of my mom and i taken at
00:11:51
the gym
00:11:53
a few weeks ago
00:11:55
so she's actually the embodiment of all
00:11:58
of these principles that i covered
00:12:00
she's my inspiration
00:12:03
many years ago she decided to make
00:12:05
fitness a part of her lifestyle
00:12:08
and ever since i think i followed her
00:12:09
footsteps
00:12:11
so she works 40 hours a week but yet she
00:12:14
still makes time to exercise
00:12:16
make healthy food choices and also take
00:12:18
care of her family
00:12:20
she's actually 50 years old she's
00:12:23
turning 51 in june
00:12:25
so
00:12:26
age is not a number
00:12:28
age is not a factor it doesn't matter
00:12:30
how old you are
00:12:32
you can start wherever whenever
00:12:35
so i just want to say
00:12:37
thank you mom for being such a great
00:12:38
role model inspiration and a loving
00:12:41
mother
00:12:44
[Applause]
00:12:49
so this was my journey
00:12:53
i started working out as a sophomore in
00:12:56
high school
00:12:57
around eight years ago
00:12:59
so there were three main reasons why i
00:13:01
started working out
00:13:02
a
00:13:04
i had low self-esteem and i lacked
00:13:06
confidence
00:13:08
b i wasn't the brightest kid in school and
00:13:10
i also wasn't the most athletic kid in
00:13:12
school
00:13:13
and c
00:13:15
my best friend was doing it so was my
00:13:17
mom so they were people who i looked up
00:13:19
to
00:13:21
so when i first started
00:13:23
i didn't really know what i was doing
00:13:25
i basically did bicep curls every day
00:13:28
i didn't know nutrition was important
00:13:30
sometimes i would starve myself just
00:13:32
those so my abs would show
00:13:35
however i was there consistently
00:13:38
i was there five to six times a week
00:13:40
and i saw progress the more progress i
00:13:43
saw the more i fell in love with fitness
00:13:48
so i realized that this was something
00:13:50
that i wanted to do for the rest of my
00:13:52
life so
00:13:53
i went to
00:13:55
penn state university
00:13:56
i studied kinesiology for those of you
00:13:59
who don't know what kinesiology is it is
00:14:01
the study of body movements
00:14:04
i realized that this was my passion
00:14:07
not only was it just exercise
00:14:09
i love to help others whether it's
00:14:11
helping people reach their
00:14:13
goals such as losing weight building
00:14:16
muscle or even just being happy
00:14:19
so i'm extremely grateful that i have
00:14:22
the opportunity to turn my passion into
00:14:25
cur into a career doing something that i
00:14:27
love
00:14:28
i know this is taking fitness
00:14:31
to an extreme however you don't have to
00:14:33
follow my footsteps
00:14:35
this is just one example of how i
00:14:38
incorporated fitness into my life
00:14:42
but if there's one thing i want you guys
00:14:43
to take home today is that as long as
00:14:45
you incorporate fitness into your life
00:14:48
your future self will thank you
00:14:55
fitness is not just about helping
00:14:57
yourself but about helping others as
00:14:59
well
00:15:00
i'm actually terrified of public
00:15:02
speaking if you guys can tell already
00:15:04
but here i am speaking in front of all
00:15:06
of you today about something that i love
00:15:09
and that i think you can benefit from
00:15:11
change your habits and you will change
00:15:13
your lifestyle
00:15:16
working out isn't a punishment it's a
00:15:18
blessing nutrition isn't restrictive
00:15:20
it's healing health isn't a
00:15:22
one-size-fits-all it may not look the
00:15:24
same for everyone but it is something
00:15:26
worth fighting for
00:15:28
so thank you all for coming and taking
00:15:30
the time to come listen today again my
00:15:33
name is vincent lam and i hope you can
00:15:34
benefit from fitness
00:15:36
[Applause]
00:15:43
you
