00:00:19
hello everybody you join me this week
00:00:22
from a location in the north of France
00:00:24
that I can only describe as car heaven
00:00:28
I've been invited here by one of my
00:00:31
subscribers Pierre Alexis to basically
00:00:33
play with his family's amazing car
00:00:36
collection and I'm really really
00:00:38
thankful to you and your family for
00:00:40
bringing me here
00:00:41
of course I'm going to do my very best
00:00:44
with the three days that I have to
00:00:47
produce as much amazing and unusual
00:00:49
content for you guys as I possibly can
00:00:51
and given the fact that I am in France I
00:00:55
thought that the natural thing to start
00:00:57
with would be this
00:00:59
it's the BMW z1 now granted it's not the
00:01:04
most French of cars but I think it is
00:01:07
something that you will all enjoy
00:01:08
learning a bit more about now the z1 is
00:01:12
one of those cars and there are a few of
00:01:15
them where an awful lot of effort went
00:01:17
into making the entire thing but it
00:01:20
seems to be remembered for one sole
00:01:21
thing that happens to quite a few cars I
00:01:24
mean let's be honest
00:01:25
how many people know the McLaren f1
00:01:27
simply for its 241 mile an hour record
00:01:30
or it's three seat layout and they
00:01:33
forget all the other amazing things that
00:01:35
went into it or for how many people is
00:01:37
the Lotus Esprit just that one that went
00:01:40
underwater in the James Bond movie well
00:01:43
I think similarly for most people if
00:01:46
they even know what a z1 is they'll just
00:01:49
say oh yeah isn't that the car with the
00:01:52
doors that do this go on admit it that's
00:01:59
pretty much all anybody remembers about
00:02:02
the z1 that's assuming you even knew
00:02:05
that it did that now as party tricks go
00:02:07
that's pretty impressive but the truth
00:02:10
is the z1 is so much more than a pair of
00:02:13
very tricked doors in fact in the 1980s
00:02:17
this was one of the most important cars
00:02:20
BMW were working on here's why the clue
00:02:25
is all in the name the Z in this case
00:02:28
stands for succumbed the German word for
00:02:30
future this car started
00:02:33
life as a pure concept car it was
00:02:36
thought up in the mid 80s as a way of
00:02:38
essentially showcasing many different
00:02:40
technologies BMW were working on chief
00:02:43
among those were the multi-link rear
00:02:44
axle suspension setup and a lot of work
00:02:47
with regards to composite panels the
00:02:50
entire car is clad in plastic now the
00:02:55
car was so well received that BMW
00:02:57
actually decided to make some as a small
00:03:00
production run they are available from
00:03:03
the factory exclusively in left-hand
00:03:05
drive with the vast majority of them
00:03:07
going to German customers the original
00:03:11
plan drum was only four thousand cars
00:03:13
and this then became eight thousand when
00:03:16
demand increased unfortunately they had
00:03:19
to stop production at around eight
00:03:21
thousand because the moles that they'd
00:03:23
used were designed only for a short
00:03:26
production run and after making enough
00:03:28
body panels for about eight thousand
00:03:30
cars the molds were no good anymore and
00:03:33
they simply had to be discarded to keep
00:03:36
going on and make new molds would have
00:03:37
simply been far too costly and that's
00:03:40
one of the other cool and completely
00:03:42
forgotten features about the z1 you can
00:03:45
remove all of the body panels from this
00:03:48
car BMW claim you can do it in about an
00:03:52
hour owners claim you can do it in about a
00:03:55
day in fact when you bought these cars
00:03:57
one of the options was to have a
00:03:59
complete set of new body panels in a
00:04:03
colour of your choosing or you could of
00:04:04
course have them sprayed any color you'd
00:04:06
like and the idea was that when you got
00:04:09
bored of your car's colour you simply
00:04:12
changed it
00:04:13
well a few manufacturers have tried that
00:04:16
both before and after it never really
00:04:20
works but it was interesting to see BMW
00:04:22
being quite creative at the time
00:04:26
once you step over the very large cell
00:04:30
you're greeted by one of the most
00:04:31
unusual interiors I've seen on a BMW now
00:04:35
it's a mixture of parts from the e30
00:04:37
parts bin and some bespoke said one
00:04:40
stuff of greatest interest is these
00:04:43
seats which are very forum hugging and
00:04:46
clad in mostly a suede type material
00:04:50
they don't look particularly pleasing to
00:04:53
my eye but they are very very
00:04:55
comfortable now in terms of engine and
00:05:00
gearbox there was only one choice
00:05:01
available that's possibly the most
00:05:03
conventional part of the entire car
00:05:05
it was the 2.5 litre straight-six from
00:05:09
the e30 325i paired to the standard
00:05:12
5-speed manual gearbox as with my ether
00:05:16
t45 series and many other cars of the
00:05:19
period this cars bonnet is hinged at the
00:05:22
front and reveals a very tidy and quite
00:05:28
old-school engine bay now there's
00:05:31
nothing special about the motor it
00:05:33
produces just over a hundred and sixty
00:05:36
and both horsepower and pounds-feet of
00:05:38
torque now despite the fact that BMW are
00:05:42
usually very Germanic and predictable
00:05:44
with what they do the Zed series has
00:05:47
never ever really found its footing this
00:05:50
car of course was the first and it was
00:05:53
never intended to be productionize dand
00:05:55
so you can really see it as something
00:05:57
ever one-off the z3 of course was always
00:06:00
intended for mass production and that
00:06:03
was essentially a more premium version
00:06:05
of the Mazda mx-5 with things like a
00:06:07
better interior and that lovely BMW six
00:06:10
cylinder engine alongside the regular
00:06:12
four-cylinder options then you had the
00:06:15
z4 which was a slightly more modern take
00:06:17
sharpened up made a little bit stiffer a
00:06:20
little bit sporty a little bit edgier
00:06:21
and as BMWs attempt at trying to take
00:06:24
away some of Porsches market share that
00:06:26
they then gained with their Boxster
00:06:28
model and that never really worked even
00:06:30
with the z4 M it just never seemed to
00:06:33
get the response that BMW wanted you can
00:06:36
see that they then changed their mind
00:06:38
because the second generations
00:06:40
four went for a totally different crowd
00:06:42
it was a larger heavier softer car with
00:06:45
the hardtop roof and a really different
00:06:48
demeanor it was going after the Mercedes
00:06:51
SLK buyer you can't of course forget the
00:06:54
za which was also a bonkers very very
00:06:58
expensive car that was intended simply
00:07:00
as the MW take on a retro muscle car
00:07:03
that was another vehicle that when it
00:07:05
came out completely confused journalists
00:07:07
because they had no idea what BMW was
00:07:10
actually trying to make even in this
00:07:13
family of misfits though the z1 really
00:07:16
does stand out there's a few reasons for
00:07:18
that first off the production numbers
00:07:20
zeday aside they made very very few of
00:07:23
these 8,000 originally built how many
00:07:26
still remaining is anybody's guess now
00:07:29
another reason for the car not being
00:07:31
sold in great numbers was the asking
00:07:33
price when this was new circa 1990 it
00:07:37
cost in France three hundred and
00:07:39
sixty-five thousand francs that's around
00:07:42
80 percent the price of a brand new
00:07:45
Porsche 911 rivals at the time might
00:07:48
have included things like lotuses then
00:07:50
new L an M 100 that was two hundred and
00:07:53
eighty thousand francs to give you some
00:07:56
context a renault clio also a new car at
00:08:00
the time would have cost you about fifty
00:08:02
three thousand in other words you'd have
00:08:05
had to have had enough money to buy
00:08:07
seven clio's to have one of these they
00:08:11
were not cheap cars and they were never
00:08:14
officially exported to America but
00:08:18
thanks to the new rules over there and
00:08:20
the fact that this car is now over 25
00:08:22
years old they are beginning to find
00:08:24
their way across the Atlantic and that
00:08:27
of course means that prices are on the
00:08:28
rise our quick check on eBay would tell
00:08:32
me that a good example like this with
00:08:35
reasonable miles is worth in excess of
00:08:37
40 thousand pounds and now I've talked
00:08:42
about it I'm gonna find out what BMWs
00:08:45
idea of the future was like 25 years
00:08:50
later
00:08:59
as you can probably notice on a day like
00:09:01
today one of the great things about this
00:09:03
car is you can drive it around with the
00:09:06
doors down which somehow is not anywhere
00:09:12
near as terrifying is doing the same
00:09:14
thing in a Caterham because you still
00:09:17
have and Elise like sill protecting you
00:09:20
here now at the current time I'm sure
00:09:24
about half my viewers will be going out
00:09:26
good he's on the correct side of the car
00:09:29
for once well as you know for me this is
00:09:33
not the correct side of the car this is
00:09:37
very much the wrong side of the car and
00:09:38
does mean my gear shifting is not as
00:09:42
good as it normally is being English of
00:09:45
course I've grown up with stick as the
00:09:49
Americans would say but it's over here
00:09:54
somewhere normally of all the cars I'm
00:09:57
going to drive this week there's a very
00:10:00
particular and honest and simple reason
00:10:03
that I've chosen this one to begin with
00:10:06
that's because it's the one which bears
00:10:09
the most resemblance to vehicles with
00:10:12
which I'm already familiar that is to
00:10:15
say certainly around town it just drives
00:10:20
like a normal car the engines perfectly
00:10:25
tractable sounds beautiful
00:10:27
[Music]
00:10:29
and the original exhaust rotted away so
00:10:33
it was replaced with something which was
00:10:34
of a very similar design but not
00:10:38
identical the main change being the fact
00:10:41
that it now has a twin exit at the rear
00:10:44
rather than a single and it's stainless
00:10:47
steel so this should hopefully last the
00:10:51
lifetime of the car just driving it
00:10:57
around at these speeds it's incredibly
00:11:01
pleasant I can certainly see the appeal
00:11:07
it's very different because of those
00:11:10
doors but it's also very easy very
00:11:15
friendly very approachable I mean it's
00:11:19
obvious really any car circa post oh
00:11:22
let's say about 1985 anyone who's never
00:11:27
driven an old car can get in and go as
00:11:31
long as they don't have a choke to deal
00:11:32
with there's usually not a problem this
00:11:38
is a real delight in case you're
00:11:41
wondering the doors are simply activated
00:11:44
by pulling a door handle which is
00:11:46
perhaps a little disappointing they've
00:11:49
made it a handle into a switch does look
00:11:54
a little bit hasty and a little bit
00:11:56
tacked on for a car that was so
00:11:58
expensive you can of course operate the
00:12:01
window independently electric naturally
00:12:06
now if the car's battery packs up there
00:12:10
is a way of getting things sorted which
00:12:13
generally involves sending a small
00:12:15
person into the boot
00:12:18
clutches very easy and I have to say
00:12:23
having had quite a few experience of
00:12:26
cars from the mark if you blindfolded me
00:12:29
and asked me to tell you what this car
00:12:30
was I could easily tell you that this
00:12:33
was a BMW feels very very familiar to me
00:12:38
I'd say most familiar to me compared
00:12:41
with my e30 for has very good reason for
00:12:44
that they come from pretty much the same
00:12:47
era my 34 in 1995 car bores very much
00:12:53
lost of line I know it probably doesn't
00:13:03
look that bright and sunny on camera but
00:13:07
trust me it is and so I'm gonna drop
00:13:11
that door again just so I can enjoy this
00:13:15
beautiful weather ah sorry about the
00:13:19
added wind noise that it may bring but I
00:13:22
think it'd be a waste to have an
00:13:25
opportunity to drive something like this
00:13:27
and not do it let's face it you would
00:13:30
wouldn't you all of the controls for
00:13:33
very naturally to hand
00:13:40
I'm heading out now to a road which has
00:13:43
a few corners on it which hopefully
00:13:45
should really demonstrate the benefits
00:13:48
if it worked of that multi-link rear
00:13:52
axle setup now for the time that was
00:13:56
quite an advanced setup it then went
00:13:57
into the e36 saloon it did not make it
00:14:02
into the Zed 3 which still use the
00:14:05
trailing arm set up from the e30 as did
00:14:09
the e36 compact and this is also the
00:14:13
same basic design as used in the rover
00:14:16
75 just this is just be nice
00:14:21
I drive so many different cars of many
00:14:24
different performance levels and yeah
00:14:26
going for us it's great but sometimes a
00:14:29
lot of cars are put a smile on my face
00:14:30
with not much speed involved and this is
00:14:31
one that being said you want to know how
00:14:34
it goes so let's find out
00:14:41
the answer with the doors down is
00:14:44
briskly enough oh it's not particularly
00:14:48
quick yes it's 160 something horsepower
00:14:51
think I'm gonna have to put that door up
00:14:53
now all right
00:14:56
the car doesn't weigh too much thanks to
00:14:58
their plastic construction oh it does
00:15:03
handle nice though now we have a
00:15:06
motorcyclist behind us or let pass but
00:15:11
oh it's really nice through these
00:15:13
corners
00:15:17
grebs nicely
00:15:20
so good balance of handling and ride
00:15:23
come firewood say
00:15:31
I love this car now that doors coming
00:15:34
down I love it too much like this
00:15:40
engines beautifully responsive it's a
00:15:43
proper old-school BMW engine simple
00:15:47
5-speed box
00:15:49
the action is OK not the best not the
00:15:53
worst BMW box I've ever used but it does
00:15:57
a job well enough all the other controls
00:16:01
are pleasant brake feel again not the
00:16:06
strongest very predictable very easy to
00:16:10
modulate steering pretty muted not a
00:16:17
huge amount of feedback from that very
00:16:20
typical BMW really in that regard now
00:16:26
bearing in mind that I drove up here in
00:16:28
the Evora so then get into a car with
00:16:31
visibility like this or turning circles
00:16:32
not too bad
00:16:34
yeah it's get into a car with decent
00:16:36
visibility is a joy
00:16:39
my sounds delicious it doesn't sound
00:16:42
like any BMW that I've driven it sounds
00:16:45
distinctly different to my e46 338 from
00:16:49
my m3 my 5 Series was a v8 so that of
00:16:54
course - no comparison car feels a very
00:16:58
pleasant size feels quite small in here
00:17:01
storage in the back isn't brilliant be
00:17:04
perfectly honest but otherwise this cars
00:17:13
our delight
00:17:15
so who should buy this well it's a
00:17:19
difficult one because if you've got
00:17:22
40,000 pounds to spend there's a lot of
00:17:26
cars you could buy you could buy an
00:17:30
Aston Martin v8 Vantage a pretty shot
00:17:34
forty grand to get you a convertible one
00:17:36
too if that's your bag you could also
00:17:39
get any set for you like he couldn't get
00:17:44
a set a he could get any box Tier one
00:17:47
for sure it's not the best car for road
00:17:52
trips because it is somewhat compromised
00:17:54
on the storage space well I'd say it's
00:17:58
the sort of car for someone who prides
00:18:01
himself on doing things a little bit
00:18:05
differently
00:18:06
and that seems to be the mo of the
00:18:09
family that I'm with and I think you'll
00:18:11
get there when you see the other cars
00:18:13
that are in their collection
00:18:18
yeah there's no real feel through this
00:18:21
wheel but it does exactly what I tell it
00:18:25
to what I'm really gonna fall in love
00:18:27
with this set of corners over the next
00:18:29
few days I know that I think I'm gonna
00:18:31
have to come here with the Evora which
00:18:33
could possibly get me in some trouble if
00:18:36
you wanna call for investment I'm not
00:18:38
sure this is necessarily a great car to
00:18:40
buy because now they're already heading
00:18:42
to the USA I think you may have already
00:18:44
missed the boat on that one but
00:18:49
ultimately if you're a fan of German
00:18:51
cars and you want something that is
00:18:56
truly different but you can still use
00:19:01
and treat like a modern car you could
00:19:06
daily this if you wanted to this one's
00:19:09
only got thirty seven thousand
00:19:12
kilometers on it so I'm incredibly
00:19:15
grateful to be our Alexis for letting me
00:19:19
drive his prized possession I know that
00:19:22
finding one of these is something he's
00:19:24
wanted to do for a very long time and
00:19:27
he's very very proud of this car rightly
00:19:29
so
00:19:33
so yeah I think this is a car for the
00:19:37
different people and that's absolutely
00:19:42
fine I've been giving a lot of thought
00:19:45
recently to what actually it is that I
00:19:48
want to feature on the channel what I
00:19:50
want a champion and of course I want to
00:19:53
do a great variety of things old new
00:19:56
