it's the BMW z1 now granted it's not the00:01:04
most French of cars but I think it is00:01:07
something that you will all enjoy00:01:08
learning a bit more about now the z1 is00:01:12
one of those cars and there are a few of00:01:15
them where an awful lot of effort went00:01:17
into making the entire thing but it00:01:20
seems to be remembered for one sole00:01:21
thing that happens to quite a few cars I00:01:24
mean let's be honest00:01:25
how many people know the McLaren f100:01:27
simply for its 241 mile an hour record00:01:30
or it's three seat layout and they00:01:33
forget all the other amazing things that00:01:35
went into it or for how many people is00:01:37
the Lotus Esprit just that one that went00:01:40
underwater in the James Bond movie well00:01:43
I think similarly for most people if00:01:46
they even know what a z1 is they'll just00:01:49
say oh yeah isn't that the car with the00:01:52
doors that do this go on admit it that's00:01:59
pretty much all anybody remembers about00:02:02
the z1 that's assuming you even knew00:02:05
that it did that now as party tricks go00:02:07
that's pretty impressive but the truth00:02:10
is the z1 is so much more than a pair of00:02:13
very tricked doors in fact in the 1980s00:02:17
this was one of the most important cars00:02:20
BMW were working on here's why the clue00:02:25
is all in the name the Z in this case00:02:28
stands for succumbed the German word for00:02:30
future this car started00:02:33
life as a pure concept car it was00:02:36
thought up in the mid 80s as a way of00:02:38
essentially showcasing many different00:02:40
technologies BMW were working on chief00:02:43
among those were the multi-link rear00:02:44
axle suspension setup and a lot of work00:02:47
with regards to composite panels the00:02:50
entire car is clad in plastic now the00:02:55
car was so well received that BMW00:02:57
actually decided to make some as a small00:03:00
production run they are available from00:03:03
the factory exclusively in left-hand00:03:05
drive with the vast majority of them00:03:07
going to German customers the original00:03:11
plan drum was only four thousand cars00:03:13
and this then became eight thousand when00:03:16
demand increased unfortunately they had00:03:19
to stop production at around eight00:03:21
thousand because the moles that they'd00:03:23
used were designed only for a short00:03:26
production run and after making enough00:03:28
body panels for about eight thousand00:03:30
cars the molds were no good anymore and00:03:33
they simply had to be discarded to keep00:03:36
going on and make new molds would have00:03:37
simply been far too costly and that's00:03:40
one of the other cool and completely00:03:42
forgotten features about the z1 you can00:03:45
remove all of the body panels from this00:03:48
car BMW claim you can do it in about an00:03:52
hour owners claim you can do it in about a00:03:55
day in fact when you bought these cars00:03:57
one of the options was to have a00:03:59
complete set of new body panels in a00:04:03
colour of your choosing or you could of00:04:04
course have them sprayed any color you'd00:04:06
like and the idea was that when you got00:04:09
bored of your car's colour you simply00:04:12
changed it00:04:13
well a few manufacturers have tried that00:04:16
both before and after it never really00:04:20
works but it was interesting to see BMW00:04:22
being quite creative at the time00:04:26
once you step over the very large cell00:04:30
you're greeted by one of the most00:04:31
unusual interiors I've seen on a BMW now00:04:35
it's a mixture of parts from the e3000:04:37
parts bin and some bespoke said one00:04:40
stuff of greatest interest is these00:04:43
seats which are very forum hugging and00:04:46
clad in mostly a suede type material00:04:50
they don't look particularly pleasing to00:04:53
my eye but they are very very00:04:55
comfortable now in terms of engine and00:05:00
gearbox there was only one choice00:05:01
available that's possibly the most00:05:03
conventional part of the entire car00:05:05
it was the 2.5 litre straight-six from00:05:09
the e30 325i paired to the standard00:05:12
5-speed manual gearbox as with my ether00:05:16
t45 series and many other cars of the00:05:19
period this cars bonnet is hinged at the00:05:22
front and reveals a very tidy and quite00:05:28
old-school engine bay now there's00:05:31
nothing special about the motor it00:05:33
produces just over a hundred and sixty00:05:36
and both horsepower and pounds-feet of00:05:38
torque now despite the fact that BMW are00:05:42
usually very Germanic and predictable00:05:44
with what they do the Zed series has00:05:47
never ever really found its footing this00:05:50
car of course was the first and it was00:05:53
never intended to be productionize dand00:05:55
so you can really see it as something00:05:57
ever one-off the z3 of course was always00:06:00
intended for mass production and that00:06:03
was essentially a more premium version00:06:05
of the Mazda mx-5 with things like a00:06:07
better interior and that lovely BMW six00:06:10
cylinder engine alongside the regular00:06:12
four-cylinder options then you had the00:06:15
z4 which was a slightly more modern take00:06:17
sharpened up made a little bit stiffer a00:06:20
little bit sporty a little bit edgier00:06:21
and as BMWs attempt at trying to take00:06:24
away some of Porsches market share that00:06:26
they then gained with their Boxster00:06:28
model and that never really worked even00:06:30
with the z4 M it just never seemed to00:06:33
get the response that BMW wanted you can00:06:36
see that they then changed their mind00:06:38
because the second generations00:06:40
four went for a totally different crowd00:06:42
it was a larger heavier softer car with00:06:45
the hardtop roof and a really different00:06:48
demeanor it was going after the Mercedes00:06:51
SLK buyer you can't of course forget the00:06:54
za which was also a bonkers very very00:06:58
expensive car that was intended simply00:07:00
as the MW take on a retro muscle car00:07:03
that was another vehicle that when it00:07:05
came out completely confused journalists00:07:07
because they had no idea what BMW was00:07:10
actually trying to make even in this00:07:13
family of misfits though the z1 really00:07:16
does stand out there's a few reasons for00:07:18
that first off the production numbers00:07:20
zeday aside they made very very few of00:07:23
these 8,000 originally built how many00:07:26
still remaining is anybody's guess now00:07:29
another reason for the car not being00:07:31
sold in great numbers was the asking00:07:33
price when this was new circa 1990 it00:07:37
cost in France three hundred and00:07:39
sixty-five thousand francs that's around00:07:42
80 percent the price of a brand new00:07:45
Porsche 911 rivals at the time might00:07:48
have included things like lotuses then00:07:50
new L an M 100 that was two hundred and00:07:53
eighty thousand francs to give you some00:07:56
context a renault clio also a new car at00:08:00
the time would have cost you about fifty00:08:02
three thousand in other words you'd have00:08:05
had to have had enough money to buy00:08:07
seven clio's to have one of these they00:08:11
were not cheap cars and they were never00:08:14
officially exported to America but00:08:18
thanks to the new rules over there and00:08:20
the fact that this car is now over 2500:08:22
years old they are beginning to find00:08:24
their way across the Atlantic and that00:08:27
of course means that prices are on the00:08:28
rise our quick check on eBay would tell00:08:32
me that a good example like this with00:08:35
reasonable miles is worth in excess of00:08:37
40 thousand pounds and now I've talked00:08:42
about it I'm gonna find out what BMWs00:08:45
idea of the future was like 25 years00:08:50

car is you can drive it around with the00:09:06
doors down which somehow is not anywhere00:09:12
near as terrifying is doing the same00:09:14

lifetime of the car just driving it00:10:57
around at these speeds it's incredibly00:11:01
pleasant I can certainly see the appeal00:11:07
it's very different because of those00:11:10
doors but it's also very easy very00:11:15
friendly very approachable I mean it's00:11:19
obvious really any car circa post oh00:11:22
let's say about 1985 anyone who's never00:11:27
driven an old car can get in and go as00:11:31
long as they don't have a choke to deal00:11:32
with there's usually not a problem this00:11:38
is a real delight in case you're00:11:41

made it a handle into a switch does look00:11:54
