get a larger more practical vehicle to

shooting supplies in this case aston

created the larger more practical

vehicle using the vanquish so it has

mostly vanquish styling and the

00:01:58

vanquish's 5.9 liter v12 which makes a

580 horsepower but that's where the

similarities end these cars and like i

said there are 99 in total for the whole

world only 13 here in north america

these cars were modified by zagato the

legendary italian design and coach

building company that aston martin has

worked with for years now zagato made

several revised body styles of the

vanquish there's a zegato coupe which

looks cool and there's a roadster and

there's a speedster version but by far

the most interesting is

essentially an aston martin vanquish

hot hatchback version with a million

all of its interesting quirks and

features then i'm going to get it out on

the road and drive it and then i'll give

all right time to start the quirks and

features of the zegato shooting break

there are a lot of quirks and features

00:03:26

but i'm going to start with the roof

which as you can see is pretty much flat

00:03:30

because this isn't a coupe like the

00:03:32

regular vanquish so it doesn't taper off

00:03:35

like a typical coupe design instead it's

00:03:37

flat and long like you would expect from

00:03:39

a station wagon which effectively this

00:03:41

is now as you can see on the top of the

00:03:43

roof it makes a v v-shape and the piece

00:03:46

in the center is glass and yes on the

00:03:49

inside you see that v-shape of glass

00:03:52

which is pretty crazy but it's even

00:03:55

crazier than you think i will get to

that in a minute first let's talk about

the fact that the rest of the roof is

carbon fiber in your standard

00:04:03

configuration this would be painted body

color the carbon fiber is a 10 000

and this car has it and the departures

the light itself looks like an

old-school machine gun or something it's

pieces lights up and just looks amazing

it is a wonderful appearance again very

distinctive very special for this very

special car but of course the craziest

part of this car and frankly the most

interesting is the hatchback cargo area

situation because they've taken a exotic

supercar and turned it into a basically

hot hatchback so you're probably

wondering how all of that works so let's

talk getting back here to open the

tailgate you have this little silver

button in the center you can press that

and as you can see then the tailgate

opens and you have access to the cargo

area or you can just press the tailgate

button on the key fob most aston martins

don't normally have a tailgate button

but this one does you push it and the

tailgate opens up as you can see and

then we're in the cargo area of the

aston martin vanquish kind of a strange

sentence now the first thing you notice

when you get back here you have a large

flat load floor where you can stick

cargo if you want to and it's all carbon

fiber now based on the roof situation

you might assume that's quite expensive

and you're correct this comes standard

it's also practical in other ways you

can see there are cargo tie-downs back

here several of them in fact so if you

want to put some stuff tie it down under

a net so it won't roll around you can do

that in the cargo area of your aston

martin and it goes further than that in

terms of practicality you also have an

umbrella back here new aston martin

models come with an umbrella this one is

no exception it is very rainy in england

so it makes sense that they provide us

with an umbrella but it's nice to see it

back here in your cargo area again

from this car now in the area around

that umbrella you can see it's leather a

little lower than the rest of the cargo

area and there's this little leather

loop you lift that up and you have a

lower cargo area that has some cutouts

for your owner's manual and for a few

roadside tools should you need them if

you have a flat tire or some other

roadside repair you need to make now

here's the crazy thing all of the other

vanquish zagato body styles just use the

00:07:30

regular vanquish chassis the coupe the

00:07:33

roadster and the speedster which makes

00:07:35

sense because they're vanquishes that

00:07:37

have just been altered as is this but

00:07:40

this one has been altered more you see

00:07:42

when they were creating the shooting

00:07:44

break they had to move the fuel tank out

00:07:46

of the way to get a cargo area back here

00:07:48

and aston martin discovered it would be

00:07:50

easier to use the rear subframe from the

00:07:53

rapid sedan rather than the whole

00:07:56

vanquish platform so

this card does that it required more

engineering from aston martin to create

00:08:03

the shooting break version and give you

an actual cargo area but they've done

that so this one is a little more

special than the other vanquish zagato

it comes down it is not power operated

but it does have soft clothes meaning if

you get it relatively close it will

latch itself i do see this fairly

frequently on car doors it's unusual in

a tailgate to have soft clothes but it's

nice to have of course and speaking of

they realize what it is but to a normal

person there's no zegato anything it

doesn't really look that crazy on the

outside and it doesn't let you know

precisely how rare it is which i like

but there are a few subtle ways you can

tell this car apart from a regular

00:09:21

vanquish aside from the hatchback one is

on the front fender you have this z

00:09:26

badge that's the zegato logo and it is

00:09:28

the only zegato logo that appears on the

00:09:31

outside of this car although on the

00:09:33

front grille you can see it's very large

00:09:34

as kind of a distinctive pattern if you

00:09:36

look closely those are also z's again

00:09:40

for zegato all over the grill just z z z

00:09:42

z z now because they did this pattern on

00:09:45

the zegato models they couldn't put

00:09:48

parking sensors in this grill because it

00:09:50

would screw up the look so all of the

00:09:52

other vanquish models have parking

sensors the zagato does not instead it

has a parking camera in the front which

none of the other vanquish models have

that's one big distinction up front the

camera means zegato or you can just look

amazing and i think it's kind of funny

that ferrari has been building like a

long shooting brake car for almost 10

years in the ff and the gtc4 lusso aston

martin creates this ultra limited

production car basically on a lark and

it looks better than everything ferrari

00:11:32

has tried to do up until this point

but despite the fact that it's beautiful

it's certainly surprising i am very

00:11:41

shocked that aston martin built this car

at all after making the roadster zagato

00:11:46

and the coop they made sense but why a

00:11:50

hot hatchback station wagon for 900 000

a car enthusiast in me thinks it's super

cool and i love it but the business

00:11:59

person in me thinks how could this have

ever made sense and yet they did it

because aston makes some odd decisions

and for that i am very grateful and next

up we climb inside the shooting break

where there is quite a bit to discuss in

00:12:14

here starting with you open the door and

00:12:16

on the door sill there is a plaque that

00:12:17

says vanquish zagato and it tells you

00:12:20

which one you have out of the 99

00:12:23

shooting brake models made which is a

00:12:25

nice reminder on the driver and on the

00:12:27

passenger side you have plaque on each

00:12:29

side which is cool anyway you get

00:12:31

further into the car and something you

00:12:32

notice quickly is there are no back

00:12:34

seats which is a little curious because

the regular vanquish has back seats and

00:12:40

this particular one is the more

00:12:41

practical station wagon model they've

00:12:44

made the car more practical but they've

00:12:46

removed the back seats although

00:12:47

truthfully it's not that big of a deal

because the vanquish's back seats are so

00:12:51

small you can't really put anyone in

00:12:52

them anyway so you have a two-seater car

00:12:55

with a large cargo area now it's worth

00:12:57

noting in the place of the back seats

00:12:59

you do have these little storage cubbies

and you can see there's a leather strap

00:13:03

with the zagato z logo on it which looks

pretty cool over on the driver's side

you have the same cubby the same leather

strap and you have a couple of usb ports

in there nice to have usb ports of

course to charge your device but that's

probably the least convenient location i

can think of for a usb port you got to

put the seat forward then root around to

try to stick it in there which isn't

really comfortable

and then your device is charging and

it's behind you totally out of reach

easy to forget when you park the car and

go away but at least it has usb ports i

suppose by the way another thing it has

behind the passenger seat you can see it

has an anchor for a child seat it is

mounted on the carbon fiber load floor

and so you can stick a car seat in here

for a baby or a toddler and you can

drive them around in your zagato

vanquish so even though you don't have

back seats you do have the practicality

of being able to put a car seat in here

but on to the other quirks and features

of this interior and i want to go back

to the roof which is very cool you can

see it makes that v-shape with the glass

like i showed you from the outside it

sort of starts bigger up front and

tapers off in the back and that just

looks awesome in here i've never seen a

00:14:14

v-shaped sunroof before but this car has

00:14:17

it and it gets even cooler right now you

can see this is a glass panel you can

00:14:21

see through of course but if you press

00:14:23

this little button in the center control

00:14:25

stack with a car and a sun on it you can

00:14:28

see instantly the sunroof turns to

00:14:30

become tinted and then the sun won't

00:14:32

beat down on you on a hot day press the

00:14:34

button again and it goes back to clear

00:14:37

press it again goes back to tinted and

00:14:39

you can just keep doing that and that

00:14:41

makes it incredibly cool it's not a

00:14:43

sunroof that opens but it is a v-shaped

sunroof with an instant tint system

and that's just the coolest thing in the

00:14:51

world also very cool in this interior is

the steering wheel in this car this is

the steering wheel from the aston martin

177 which was like the ultra crazy low

years ago well that steering wheel has

horn instead it's on the steering wheel

rim by where you'd put your thumbs you

it and the horn actually sounds that's

where your horn is so it's right within

wheel and next up another cool interior

quirk i like is the key situation take a

look at the key you can see it looks

like a very upscale piece of course this

logo inside of it they've designed it

you turn the car off the speakers go

right back into the dashboard so it's

kind of a cleaner look until you

actually need to use them next up a kind

of funny quirk in this car is on the

driver's door panel take a look at the

window switches you can see there are

four switches even though this car

doesn't have four windows that roll down

the front switches roll down the front

windows the back switches are for the

tailgate and the fuel door i suspect the

reason they did this is they just

borrowed that switch panel from the

rapide which does have rear windows that

rolled down and they figured hey we

already make this let's just repurpose

those rear window switches to make them

that's what they did so it looks like

interior there are some flaws worth

with the wiper stock just looks and

feels like such cheap plastic it's just

such a shame and it's the same deal with

the font that aston martin uses

throughout this interior on buttons and

switches i complained about this in my

review of the new vantage roadster it's

the same thing in here you can see on

the steering wheel buttons you have what

looks like a cheap default font that

just doesn't match the beauty of an

aston martin same deal on the center

doesn't really look all that good and

i'm surprised aston martin doesn't have

a classier font like so many other

automakers next up another flaw in here

this car has no glove box which is

especially a flaw because the regular

00:18:23

vanquish does have a glove box but the

00:18:26

zagato doesn't for some reason and

00:18:28

there's no lockable storage anywhere in

00:18:29

this interior which is a problem for

00:18:31

some car owners next up another rather

00:18:34

weird quirk and the center control stack

00:18:36

you have several dials including two

00:18:38

weird ones in the center one is a circle

00:18:41

with a circle inside of it that looks

00:18:43

like the target store logo below that

00:18:45

you have a circle with nothing inside of

00:18:47

it it's just completely unlabeled it

00:18:49

turns out the upper one controls the

00:18:50

stereo volume whereas the lower one

00:18:53

controls the infotainment system on this

00:18:55

screen at the top of the center console

you move that and you can scroll through

00:18:59

various different menus and choose

things but having two unlabeled things

right there you're inevitably going to

select the wrong one it's just not

really the best placement and speaking

of the infotainment system i should say

that's not really the best either this

car comes from the pre aston martin

using mercedes infotainment days and it

shows this thing is not very good small

screen not very intuitive it just could

be better for nine hundred thousand

dollars with that said one cool thing

about the infotainment system worth

noting when the car is off the screen is

folded into the dashboard and has carbon

fiber on its back to give it a cleaner

look like it's just one piece looks kind

of cool in there you don't just have an

exposed screen sitting at all times but

when you turn on the car it folds itself

back up and instead of having the aston

martin logo it has the z zegato logo

which is a nice little touch just

another little reminder that your car is

better than a normal aston martin but

nobody really buys this car for the

infotainment system they buy it for the

insane rarity of the zagato version of

the vanquish and for the performance

which of course is delivered by this

powertrain a 5.9 liter v12 that makes

580 horsepower you can see it says it's

a 6.0 v12 but that isn't actually true

it's a 5.9 liter but regardless big

engine very powerful lots of cylinders

and it looks cool under the hood but

final thing before i go drive this car i

the window sticker and as you can see it

this is quite a bit cheaper than that

expensive options the carbon roof and

the carbon floor in the cargo area but

it's also worth pointing out that this

car comes with a 3 000

destination charge in a normal car it's

like 800 bucks maybe 900 or a thousand

in this thing it's three grand for

shipping and destination because when

you're transporting a car like this you

have to be quite a bit more careful and
