Рассказать о столь неординарной личности, какой был выдающийся голландский художник-постимпрессионист Винсент Ван Гог, возможно лишь в не менее необычной форме. И это удалось польско-британской команде Дороты Кобелы и Хью Уэлшмана (лауреат премии «Оскар» в 2008 году). За шесть лет работы кинокоманде при участии более 100 художников из 20 стран удалось создать первый в мире анимационный полнометражный фильм, полностью нарисованный масляными красками на холсте. Участники проекта изучили сотни писем художника к младшему брату Тео, специально для фильма было написано более 65 000 картин – в той же технике, в которой рисовал сам Ван Гог. Работу над фильмом по праву можно назвать филигранной: по воспоминаниям художницы Саши Соколовой (единственной участницы проекта от России), работать приходилось в очень быстром темпе, поскольку на одну секунду фильма писалось 12 картин-кадров (на создание каждой из них отводилось не более двух часов), а сами сцены длились по 200–500 кадров. В процессе работы над фильмом использовались оригинальные картины Ван Гога, однако во многих случаях художникам приходилось их додумывать и подстраивать под требования киноэкрана. Жизнь Винсента Ван Гога оборвалась в возрасте 37 лет. На прогулке художник выстрелил в себя из револьвера, но лишь ранил себя, а потому смог самостоятельно добраться до своего пансиона, где скончался через 2 дня. События фильма «Ван Гог. С любовью, Винсент» происходят через год после смерти художника. Владелец пансиона находит последнее письмо Ван Гога к брату. Арман Рулен, сын почтальона, должен доставить это письмо Тео Ван Гогу. И хотя эта обязанность сначала совсем не радует молодого человека, в ходе своего путешествия он пытается узнать, кем был Винсент Ван Гог и каковы истинные обстоятельства его смерти.
