00:00:00
all right let's talk about a little bit
00:00:01
of that a little bit now about uh
00:00:02
dealing with injuries
00:00:04
all right now this is going to vary for
00:00:05
everyone depending on are you a hobbyist
00:00:08
or your competitor
00:00:09
do you have something coming up are you
00:00:10
just training if you're if you're a
00:00:13
competitor
00:00:14
um so first things first i've had some
00:00:18
some pretty major injuries um not many
00:00:20
thankfully uh
00:00:22
when i was a blue belt i had a grade two
00:00:24
tear my uh my mcl
00:00:26
my right knee uh obviously had my lcl
00:00:30
reconstruction
00:00:31
i've had uh smaller injuries here and
00:00:34
there i have you know my neck has a re-incurring
00:00:36
injury uh which gets bad sometimes if
00:00:38
you saw them a dolphin camp video
00:00:40
i wrestled hard the first day and then
00:00:41
mako threw me and i i
00:00:43
really hurt my neck so i wasn't in any
00:00:45
any of the other wrestling footage
00:00:47
like really hurt my neck bad um my
00:00:50
ankles have been popped from heel hooks
00:00:52
you know dozens of times um in the beginning i
00:00:55
just
00:00:56
didn't know how to not tap from heel
00:00:58
hooks before my ankles got broken
00:01:00
um you know my fingers have been broken
00:01:03
uh i had that bike accident before i dcc
00:01:05
i broke my hand in two spots tore
00:01:06
ligaments in my wrist
00:01:08
um craig broke my arm in half
00:01:11
to pop my arm
00:01:16
and that's pretty much all the major
00:01:19
injuries i think i've had
00:01:22
guardio kicked me in the face my jaw was
00:01:24
sore for like
00:01:25
three months maybe i like fractured my
00:01:27
draw something that i just never
00:01:28
went to the doctor's broken toes here
00:01:31
and there but
00:01:32
uh that's everything major that um
00:01:35
that happened to me so far um
00:01:40
when you deal with injuries you have to
00:01:41
understand that you can't push yourself
00:01:45
to a point where you're going to get
00:01:46
reinjured so when i tore my mcl
00:01:49
i wore a knee brace for a full year
00:01:51
until
00:01:52
my leg was a hundred percent and by a
00:01:53
hundred percent i mean
00:01:56
to a point where i didn't know what leg
00:01:57
i injured anymore okay i went very very
00:01:59
light i was terrified of getting
00:02:01
re-injured and needing surgery when i
00:02:02
was so young
00:02:03
uh which mcs don't usually need surgery
00:02:05
but i was terrified anyways
00:02:07
and you know i really baby injuries i
00:02:09
don't want us to be the guy
00:02:11
who's 60 years old i cannot move so
00:02:14
whenever i get an injury i'm i take
00:02:15
i take good care of it uh if it's just
00:02:18
um
00:02:20
you have something that's that's good
00:02:21
for you know being an athlete long term
00:02:23
you know i got my lcl injury i took care
00:02:26
of it
00:02:27
i didn't rush it uh you know i listened
00:02:28
to the doctor
00:02:30
and you know i figured i would rather
00:02:33
wait the extra two months or however
00:02:34
long it was just hypothetically two
00:02:36
months
00:02:37
um then go back in and re-injure it and
00:02:38
it just never be the way that it should
00:02:40
be um so i waited
00:02:42
you know all the amount of time to you
00:02:44
know until i got doctor clearance
00:02:45
to uh to
00:02:49
to start training again at least with
00:02:50
the major injuries with little injuries
00:02:52
you break your fingers something like that you just tape it and
00:02:54
you know it's fine like i don't know if
00:02:55
you guys can tell like i broke my pinky
00:02:56
and
00:02:57
never really healed fully but it's it's
00:03:00
fine
00:03:01
um just can't straighten it quite all
00:03:03
the way
00:03:04
like little injuries i just do whatever
00:03:06
i think is best major injuries
00:03:09
that are like career enders i always
00:03:10
listen to doctors um
00:03:13
so as far as injuries in training
00:03:18
you have to find partners number one
00:03:21
that you trust that are willing to work
00:03:23
with you like i'm not gonna go with
00:03:24
a guy like nikki rod um who's just like
00:03:27
huge and explosive when i have you know
00:03:29
a broken knee
00:03:31
i'm gonna go with guys that are slow and
00:03:33
controlled and
00:03:34
uh you know even if they were to explode
00:03:36
they wouldn't really be able to injure
00:03:38
me because they're not you know
00:03:39
they're not not big enough they're not
00:03:42
explosive enough i go with guys who much
00:03:43
lighter than me
00:03:44
you know i'm 220 230 i go with guys who
00:03:48
are you know 150 160 ones i generally gotta eat them
00:03:50
when my knees hurt for example
00:03:52
um you have to work on things to put
00:03:54
yourself in situations where
00:03:56
uh you can play
00:04:00
but you can also do jiu jitsu with your
00:04:02
injury like so for example
00:04:04
when i had my left knee
00:04:07
uh surgery i wouldn't be able to apply
00:04:09
half guard or butterfly half guard on my
00:04:11
right hip because then my if i'm playing butterfly
00:04:14
guard
00:04:15
on my left hip on my right hip all the
00:04:17
weight on the butterfly hook is
00:04:19
putting pressure on my lcl so i would
00:04:21
change and i'll start playing half guard
00:04:23
on my left hip instead and then you know
00:04:26
my left foot like would be in the ground
00:04:28
and my right leg
00:04:29
would uh be playing butterfly hook so
00:04:31
you have to adapt your game
00:04:32
to get you know uh to to fit
00:04:35
whatever injury you have um so the
00:04:38
biggest thing is finding partners you
00:04:39
trust
00:04:40
finding partners uh if you can that are
00:04:42
much smaller than you
00:04:44
to so even if they do move the wrong way
00:04:46
by by accident they don't
00:04:48
they don't re-injure you um and you know
00:04:50
treating
00:04:52
there's a balance of treating your body
00:04:54
with respect
00:04:56
and not being a total um you know
00:04:58
you can't baby
00:04:59
baby injury so much where you just feel
00:05:01
like you know you're just over doing it
00:05:04
and there's no reason to go that that
00:05:05
light
00:05:06
but at the same time with a major injury
00:05:08
uh
00:05:09
you know respecting your body and giving
00:05:11
it the time it needs to heal so that it
00:05:12
heals well
00:05:13
um and like for example
00:05:17
my you know my knee levers
00:05:20
um got much better if i did play half
00:05:23
guard on my right hip i wouldn't be able
00:05:24
to use a butterfly hook so
00:05:26
i would use a knee lever so my knee
00:05:27
lever on my right hip got much better
00:05:29
my half guard passing got much better
00:05:31
because i wouldn't be able to do my
00:05:32
typical torque on those inside the side
00:05:34
passes because i couldn't my leg wasn't
00:05:36
stable
00:05:37
so just force guys into body locks
00:05:39
passing my knees going to half guard
00:05:41
and i you know a lot many parts of my
00:05:43
game got much better because i was in
00:05:45
because i was i was injured and i had to
00:05:47
adapt my game to that
00:05:48
okay so you know what the cliche that
00:05:51
you know you actually do get better when
00:05:53
you're injured
00:05:54
um is somewhat true um you know i was
00:05:56
there every single day
00:05:58
uh you know adapting to the to you know
00:06:01
my injuries you know my right leg being
00:06:02
hurt or
00:06:03
my left leg being hurt my neck being
00:06:04
hurt someone locks my
00:06:06
neck's really bad and someone locks a
00:06:08
guillotine or a front headlock or a
00:06:10
triangle and it hurts how you just tap you know
00:06:11
who cares you'd rather be rather tap
00:06:13
early and then you know wait the extra
00:06:15
few seconds and have your neck be sore
00:06:17
for for two weeks or three weeks
00:06:20
so that's uh that's definitely you know
00:06:22
a big part of it is you know adapting
00:06:24
your game to play
00:06:25
correctly you know into whatever injury
00:06:27
you have finding training partners that
00:06:29
you trust training
00:06:30
finding training partners that
00:06:31
preferably a little bit smaller than you
00:06:33
i'm definitely not much bigger than you
00:06:35
uh
00:06:36
and just being there every day you know
00:06:38
being there mentally whether
00:06:39
you can't be there every day at least
00:06:41
thinking about the sport all right
00:06:43
um you know i'm a hundred percent
00:06:45
confident in saying
00:06:47
that i wasn't able to train for i think
00:06:50
three almost four months after i got my
00:06:52
lcl fixed
00:06:53
and i came back better than i was before
00:06:56
i got my
00:06:57
surgery even though i wasn't training
00:07:00
because every night
00:07:01
i'm there uh i'm i'm uh i'm
00:07:05
constantly thinking about the sport
00:07:07
before i go to sleep when i wake up i'm
00:07:08
thinking about moves
00:07:10
i'm there in class i'm watching john
00:07:11
teach in the daytime but i go home at
00:07:14
nighttime i'm thinking about it um
00:07:16
you know i was i was on crutches and i
00:07:18
was taking ubers to the city
00:07:20
uh and like hobbling down the stairs to
00:07:22
henzo's
00:07:23
on my crutches just to watch collapse
00:07:24
just to see guys just to answer
00:07:26
questions just so i'm there
00:07:27
just so you're there mentally with the
00:07:28
sport if you can't be there physically
00:07:30
you have to be there mentally and you
00:07:32
won't miss a beat but if you just check
00:07:34
out physically because you're hurt
00:07:35
and you check out mentally that's when
00:07:37
you start to lose progress
00:07:38
um and you actually come back worse than
00:07:40
when you than when you started when you
00:07:42
got hurt okay but
00:07:43
as long as you're there mentally and you
00:07:45
come back and you come back and the
00:07:46
whole time
00:07:47
if you're if you're hurt in july you
00:07:50
have to come back in september as long
00:07:51
as you're
00:07:52
active mentally at least if you can't be
00:07:54
active physically be active mentally the
00:07:56
whole way through
00:07:57
it becomes much easier to pick the pace
00:07:59
up once you start again
00:08:00
because your mind's there and your body
00:08:02
just has to catch up
00:08:03
versus your mind not being there and you
00:08:05
just have no idea what's going on
00:08:06
anymore and then
00:08:07
your your mind's not there your body's
00:08:09
still falling apart and
00:08:11
it turns into a disaster but at least if
00:08:12
your mind's there all that has to catch
00:08:14
up is your body and your body comes back
00:08:15
very quickly your timing and all that
00:08:17
comes back quickly once you're once
00:08:18
you're not injured anymore
00:08:27
you
