00:00:00
welcome i'm blake and today we're going
00:00:02
to be milling up some exotic wood i'm
00:00:04
going to be pouring 11 and a half
00:00:06
gallons of epoxy i may or may not ruin
00:00:09
this entire piece and chop off my arm
00:00:11
with a chainsaw and we are going to
00:00:13
create a truly one-of-a-kind sculpture
00:00:16
stay tuned
00:00:21
the sculpture was commissioned by the
00:00:23
beacon which is an event center located
00:00:25
in topeka kansas and has a bunch of
00:00:27
different venues that you can rent out
00:00:29
this is specifically made for the
00:00:31
founders room will be displayed right on
00:00:32
this fireplace mantel
00:00:35
all right let's get right into this
00:00:38
so i decided to use a lot of exotic wood
00:00:40
in this sculpture really to bring it to
00:00:41
the next level i've never used half of
00:00:44
these before but i'm super excited to
00:00:46
try them out
00:00:47
[Music]
00:01:05
i'm then going to joint the side and
00:01:07
face of each board before putting them
00:01:09
through the planer to make sure i have
00:01:11
perfectly square and flat lumber to then
00:01:14
stick on the table saw and cut hundreds
00:01:16
of different sized pieces
00:01:19
[Music]
00:01:53
okay
00:01:57
[Music]
00:02:12
once all the pieces were cut down to
00:02:14
size i still had to sand every single
00:02:16
piece
00:02:17
this took pretty much a full day to do
00:02:20
and was not too fun but luckily for you
00:02:22
guys i fast forward through everything
00:02:24
so you don't have to watch it
00:02:27
[Music]
00:02:33
for this sculpture i'm going to be using
00:02:34
a 3d rendering made by laura and i will
00:02:37
put a link to all of her social media
00:02:39
accounts in the description she does
00:02:41
amazing work and when doing a sculpture
00:02:43
like this it is absolutely crucial to
00:02:45
have really good reference pictures so
00:02:48
i'm so glad that i found her work and
00:02:49
i'm going to be using her references as
00:02:52
a template for this sculpture
00:02:54
i try and arrange these pieces so that
00:02:56
two pieces of the same species aren't
00:02:58
next to each other but i also have to
00:03:00
account for the height of each slat i
00:03:02
don't want a lot of the same heights
00:03:04
next to each other and i also have to
00:03:06
consider the epoxy level and how much
00:03:09
epoxy to wood ratio they'll be on the
00:03:11
final sculpture so there's a lot more
00:03:13
that goes into this than just lining up
00:03:15
each piece the finished sculpture is
00:03:17
really being visualized as i line up
00:03:19
these pieces
00:03:21
next it's all about doing individual
00:03:23
glue ups and this is what takes the
00:03:24
majority of the time on this initial
00:03:26
process it's literally just using every
00:03:29
single clamp i have and waiting for
00:03:31
epoxy to cure and then milling
00:03:33
everything down getting everything flat
00:03:35
so i could then do multiple glue ups at
00:03:37
a time
00:03:40
[Music]
00:04:06
[Music]
00:04:11
bubbles are my worst enemy and something
00:04:13
that i fear more than anything when
00:04:15
doing these sculptures so in order to
00:04:17
combat this i use moss penetrating epoxy
00:04:20
and i cover not only the front side but
00:04:22
the reverse side of every square inch of
00:04:25
this sculpture or this i guess just
00:04:27
pixelated pieces of wood right now and
00:04:30
what this is going to do it's just going
00:04:31
to seal everything in and make sure that
00:04:34
no bubbles come out of the wood
00:04:48
now i normally don't recommend trying
00:04:50
something completely new that you've
00:04:51
never done before on a project that's
00:04:53
taken you a full week to do so far but
00:04:56
you know what i'm just gonna wing it
00:04:58
here i feel like this is gonna work so
00:05:00
i'm going for it
00:05:02
i found this really thin plastic at the
00:05:04
big box store and i want to use this as
00:05:06
my mold for pouring the epoxy normally i
00:05:09
use melamine and when i use melamine i
00:05:11
do just a solid rectangle or square for
00:05:14
my molds which means i end up wasting a
00:05:16
ton of epoxy so for this i want to be
00:05:19
able to bend the plastic and actually
00:05:21
make a silhouette of the sculpture there
00:05:23
for saving a ton of epoxy i literally
00:05:26
have no idea if this is going to work
00:05:28
let me know in the comments if you think
00:05:29
this is going to work or if i'm going to
00:05:30
have issues
00:05:33
if i do it's going to be a big problem
00:05:36
but i am going to silicone the heck out
00:05:38
of this thing
00:05:40
and use probably two or three full tubes
00:05:42
of silicone
00:05:44
trying to make sure i do not have any
00:05:46
leaks at all
00:06:00
do
00:06:11
[Music]
00:06:21
i'm also going to put these one by ones
00:06:23
as bracing because what i'm thinking
00:06:26
here is the epoxy is going to want to
00:06:27
push these apart so if i put all these
00:06:29
support beams on the outside and then
00:06:31
put shims kind of pressing the sides in
00:06:35
i think that will combat the epoxy
00:06:37
pushing out again i don't know this
00:06:39
could be overkill or this could be
00:06:41
underkill i do not know at this point
00:06:44
but we're going for it
00:06:46
i want to be using moss epoxy depor x
00:06:49
what's special about this epoxy is it
00:06:51
can be poured up to three inches thick
00:06:54
there is not too many brands out there
00:06:55
that you can pour a full three inches
00:06:58
and this one i've had really good
00:06:59
success in the past so it's really the
00:07:01
only product i use
00:07:03
i did my very first pour inside the
00:07:05
workshop because i was preparing for the
00:07:07
worst case scenario and that is just
00:07:09
leakage all around this mold or the mold
00:07:12
breaking i did have one small leak that
00:07:14
i used some flex seal paste and this is
00:07:17
the only product that actually stops an
00:07:20
active leak i will put a link to that in
00:07:22
the description
00:07:25
i then bring the entire mold inside the
00:07:27
house for a couple of different reasons
00:07:29
first there's a lot less dust inside the
00:07:31
house second this is completely
00:07:34
temperature controlled i have it at 68
00:07:36
degrees with an overhead fan directly
00:07:38
above the mold which is crucial when
00:07:40
doing thick pores
00:07:42
the last and not least i have bruno here
00:07:45
checking to make sure the mold isn't
00:07:47
leaking when i'm not around and he also
00:07:49
keeps me updated if there's bubbles that
00:07:51
need to be popped and if you're worried
00:07:53
about our newborn sleeping next to this
00:07:55
giant tub of curing epoxy don't worry we
00:07:59
don't even really like them that much
00:08:04
now i pour this in layers because you
00:08:05
can only pour three inches at a time if
00:08:08
you end up pouring more than three
00:08:10
inches you will get an exothermic
00:08:11
reaction which means it will get way too
00:08:14
hot and will fracture the majority of
00:08:16
the piece
00:08:17
if not it will cure too fast and you'll
00:08:19
have a ton of bubbles dried up inside
00:08:22
the mold
00:08:26
i waited another five days after my
00:08:28
final pour to make sure everything was
00:08:30
fully cured before de-molding
00:08:33
i gotta say this plastic has worked
00:08:35
unbelievable it not only comes off
00:08:37
fairly easy but it did not even budge at
00:08:40
all besides one minor leak which i could
00:08:43
easily get using melamine
00:08:45
this thing worked out flawlessly and i
00:08:47
will be using this for every sculpture
00:08:49
here on out
00:08:52
now all that's left to do is to find the
00:08:54
whale that is hiding inside this massive
00:08:57
block
00:08:58
one of the hardest part of these
00:09:00
sculptures is just getting started it's
00:09:02
super intimidating to make that first
00:09:04
cut but i've learned that you gotta just
00:09:07
do it and go for it because if you don't
00:09:09
and if you're scared or too worried it's
00:09:12
just not gonna turn out good
00:09:14
so without further ado let me quit
00:09:16
talking and let's watch this whale come
00:09:19
to life
00:09:21
[Music]
00:09:39
[Music]
00:10:02
i wasn't so lucky on day one but here on
00:10:05
day two my hazmat suit finally arrived
00:10:08
and now i have the face mask and the
00:10:09
full get up and i gotta test it out for
00:10:12
comfort durability and we're putting
00:10:14
this thing to the test
00:10:17
and here it is the very first cut in my
00:10:19
brand new suit and check it out
00:10:22
not only do i almost break my sculpture
00:10:24
in half but i'm i've got this chainsaw
00:10:26
on full blast and it nearly just took
00:10:29
off my arm maybe the round two will be a
00:10:31
little bit better let's check it out
00:10:35
and you know what round two
00:10:37
still really terrible but you know what
00:10:40
i didn't have a chainsaw so that's a
00:10:41
plus but you know right now i'm
00:10:43
regretting my my life decisions and
00:10:46
purchasing decisions because i think i
00:10:49
have the most unlucky hazmat suit on
00:10:51
earth so maybe don't hit that link but
00:10:54
on second thought maybe do hit the link
00:10:56
i get a little benefit from it so help
00:10:58
me out here folks come on for real
00:11:00
though the problem was actually just
00:11:02
those terrible plastic saw horses those
00:11:04
things collapse all the time i had those
00:11:07
in the middle of the walkway actually
00:11:09
for you guys i have way better camera
00:11:11
angles when i have it there so i
00:11:13
basically put my life and this sculpture
00:11:16
on the line for you guys so hopefully
00:11:18
you guys like this video give me a
00:11:20
thumbs up give me a subscription because
00:11:22
i may die
00:11:25
i always get asked what do you do with
00:11:27
all of these off cuts well
00:11:29
let me show you
00:11:31
[Music]
00:11:33
for commission sculptures like this i
00:11:35
always like to give the client a little
00:11:36
something extra meaningful to go along
00:11:39
with the sculpture just as a thank you
00:11:41
and something cool because it is a cut
00:11:43
off from the actual sculpture
00:11:46
let's see how long it takes you to
00:11:47
figure out what these are
00:11:54
[Music]
00:12:27
did you guess it right let me know in
00:12:29
the comments
00:12:31
all right let's get back to the
00:12:32
sculpture
00:12:35
after the bulk pieces are cut off using
00:12:37
the chainsaw i switch over to my angle
00:12:39
grinder with the arbor tech turbo plane
00:12:42
this takes off material super quick is
00:12:45
really aggressive and really nice to
00:12:47
work with look at all these scraps here
00:12:49
you see it actually just like shaves the
00:12:52
epoxy and wood and creates these really
00:12:54
cool chips

[Music]
00:15:21
[Music]
00:15:33
after all the proportions were how i
00:15:35
wanted and all the details were carved
00:15:37
in using all the various tools it was
00:15:39
time to sand everything down i sanded
00:15:42
from 60 grit all the way to 5000 grit
00:15:46
wet sanding and this took a very very
00:15:48
long time
00:15:52
[Music]
00:16:02
[Music]
00:16:19
[Music]
00:16:24
now that the sculpture is complete it's
00:16:26
time to start working on the base and
00:16:28
how this thing is going to be displayed
00:16:30
for that i knew it was going to be super
00:16:32
complicated but i have the perfect guy
00:16:35
for the job alex under the water design
00:16:39
say hi
00:16:40
hi that's alex
00:16:44
so the master plan was to tape a level
00:16:46
on the side of the whale when it was
00:16:48
upright in the position i wanted
00:16:50
from there we could flip it over on its
00:16:53
back
00:16:54
make that level perfectly in the center
00:16:56
again this would mean that we could
00:16:58
drill a right angle directly down into
00:17:02
the curved surface so alex made a little
00:17:04
jig here so we have a perfectly
00:17:07
straight drill hole
00:17:09
on two points on this whale
00:17:14
while i was carving the whale alex was
00:17:16
working on this slab of bastogne walnut
00:17:19
to use as the base
00:17:21
he first cut everything down to size
00:17:23
before milling up the wood from the
00:17:25
jointer and planer making sure
00:17:26
everything is nice and square and flat
00:17:29
then he used his good old old-fashioned
00:17:31
hand plane which he loves a little too
00:17:33
much to get even a nicer finished
00:17:36
surface and you'll really be able to see
00:17:38
the figuring in this bastoni walnut here
00:17:41
check that out
00:17:42
then he added some leveling feet made
00:17:44
custom out of walnut and inlaid with a
00:17:47
threaded insert
00:17:49
pretty
00:17:50
fancy stuff if you ask me before putting
00:17:52
some finish on and then chiseling out
00:17:55
the nameplate and cncing it out of brass
00:18:06
[Music]
00:18:16
we finished this thing up by tapping
00:18:18
some steel rods and threading them
00:18:21
inside the base and now we're ready for
00:18:23
the big reveal
00:18:26
[Music]
00:18:31
[Music]
00:19:15
i am beyond thrilled with how this
00:19:17
sculpture turned out it turned out way
00:19:19
better than i could have ever
00:19:20
anticipated everything from the
00:19:22
presentation to the execution everything
00:19:25
went flawlessly and i can't wait to give
00:19:28
this to the client and let them see it
00:19:30
in person
00:19:31
i'm blake from bm sculptures
