00:00:00
hello and welcome back to the channel on
00:00:02
our continuing voyage to become better
00:00:04
blues players my name is mark and in
00:00:06
this lesson we're going to look at the
00:00:08
solos as easy tops give me all your
00:00:10
loving
00:00:11
this is the most requested lesson i've
00:00:13
had on my channel several people have
00:00:16
been continually asking for it so
00:00:17
finally i put it together and here it is
00:00:20
the way the video is going to work is
00:00:22
the first thing i'm going to do is i'm
00:00:23
going to break the solo down into seven
00:00:25
licks and show you them one by one and
00:00:28
nice and slow with tab on the screen so
00:00:30
you can put them together yourself and
00:00:32
that's how they are on the record then
00:00:34
we'll come back on the other side and
00:00:36
what i'll do is um i'll give you some
00:00:38
talk some tips about how to perform them
00:00:41
and different things and show you some
00:00:43
alternative fingerings as well some
00:00:45
slightly different ways of playing the
00:00:46
list that might be a little bit easier
00:00:48
because some of them might be a bit
00:00:50
challenging okay so but we're going to
00:00:52
start with a lick by lick breakdown of
00:00:54
exactly what's on the record okay so
00:00:57
here's lick one
00:01:01
[Music]
00:01:12
okay and nice and slow
00:01:17
[Applause]
00:01:20
important thing is it comes in on b2 so
00:01:22
the counting is one two three
00:01:25
four one
00:01:32
here's look two
00:01:36
[Music]
00:01:45
[Music]
00:01:46
on nice and slow
00:01:56
now this comes in on beat three of the
00:01:59
second bar uh actually no beat sorry
00:02:01
beat four of the second bar
00:02:04
there is this little figure
00:02:06
here which is just like an incidental
00:02:10
picking noise we'll talk more about that
00:02:12
later on um but here here's the uh the
00:02:15
lick again nice and slow
00:02:22
food
00:02:23
[Music]
00:02:39
i'm nice and slow
00:02:49
[Music]
00:03:05
okay and nice and slow
00:03:07
comes in uh on the and after beat one
00:03:12
so uh
00:03:14
one two three
00:03:16
four one
00:03:21
[Music]
00:03:25
okay lick five
00:03:29
[Music]
00:03:34
one two three four
00:03:44
okay nice and slow
00:03:46
one two
00:03:48
three
00:03:49
four
00:03:58
okay you'll notice that actually there's
00:04:00
a pinched harmonic in there on the
00:04:02
original recording as well i can't get
00:04:03
that for a couple of reasons uh one is
00:04:06
i've got this horrible plaster on my
00:04:08
finger because i've actually sliced my
00:04:09
finger on a knife but never mind and but
00:04:11
the other one is
00:04:12
that i'll be honest i struggle to get
00:04:15
that harmonic in the heat of battle when
00:04:17
you're trying to play that lick of full
00:04:19
speed to think of actually picking that
00:04:22
particular note in a slightly different
00:04:23
way if you want to work on it you've you
00:04:25
know you can do that and and get that
00:04:27
harmonic in there i've been playing with
00:04:29
this solo for a week or two now and i'm
00:04:31
struggling to get that in so uh to be
00:04:33
honest i just kind of ignored it
00:04:35
okay that was what was that those lick
00:04:37
five let's do lick six
00:04:42
[Music]
00:04:49
um nice and slow
00:04:57
okay this is one where you might want to
00:04:59
go for an alternative fingering up here
00:05:05
because you you're kind of your hands
00:05:06
already around this position not have to
00:05:08
jump back down i'll talk to you we'll
00:05:10
talk more about that at the end
00:05:13
so this will be lick seven now
00:05:27
and nice and slow
00:05:35
okay to me he sounds like he's letting a
00:05:38
lot of those note ring out and that's
00:05:39
kind of what i'm trying to do to tricky
00:05:41
lick this i think this one and also lick
00:05:45
three i think he's using a combination
00:05:47
of pick and finger to um pick uh and to
00:05:51
pick two dots at the same time
00:05:54
he might be strumming it like this
00:05:58
you go for whichever way you think uh it
00:06:01
kind of suits
00:06:07
okay that was what was that lick seven
00:06:10
and now we're on to lick eight
00:06:14
[Music]
00:06:24
okay
00:06:25
that's about as close uh as i can get to
00:06:28
what's on the record it's tricky one
00:06:30
this one i'll try i'll take you through
00:06:31
very slowly it comes in on the and after
00:06:34
the three one
00:06:36
two three
00:06:42
[Music]
00:06:50
okay that's how i think it is on the
00:06:51
record
00:06:53
okay and then the outro it goes into
00:06:55
that syncopated drift thing then which
00:06:57
goes like this
00:07:02
like that okay
00:07:03
so now let's talk about
00:07:06
um some kind of
00:07:07
easier ways of doing that well the first
00:07:09
thing to say about the solo is
00:07:11
i've tried to get this exactly as i
00:07:14
think it is on the record i've had it
00:07:16
actually professionally tabbed out and
00:07:19
everything so it's if you slow it down
00:07:21
this is would seem to be
00:07:23
exactly what he's playing on the record
00:07:27
but there's a lot of incidental little
00:07:29
things in there that have been tabbed
00:07:32
that are kind of just percussive noises
00:07:35
and things that are
00:07:37
um just in his performance so for
00:07:40
example at the start of lick two we get
00:07:43
this little figure
00:07:48
[Music]
00:07:50
so which is
00:07:52
to me he's coming out of like one he's
00:07:53
playing like one
00:08:02
um what he's doing is he's playing lick
00:08:04
one and then he's just playing a little
00:08:06
strum of
00:08:08
of uh c minor
00:08:10
before he then goes into lick two
00:08:13
and it's tabbed out exactly what he's
00:08:15
playing if you try and play that exactly
00:08:18
as you probably heard i did it sounds
00:08:20
quite stiff it doesn't sound natural
00:08:23
if you're trying to be that precise
00:08:25
i think the point of the solo when he
00:08:27
played it is
00:08:28
it's not really that precise it's it
00:08:31
sounds like he's played it very loose
00:08:32
very fluid and when there are these
00:08:35
little incidental things in between the
00:08:37
licks
00:08:38
and trying to get them so precise means
00:08:41
that you're playing actually gets quite
00:08:42
rigid well it does for me anyway
00:08:45
so billy gibbons is one of these players
00:08:47
i think similar thing like with jimi
00:08:49
hendrix or so much of jimi hendrix when
00:08:51
you see it perfectly tubbed out it
00:08:54
becomes so difficult to kind of play
00:08:56
because so much of of those little noises and
00:08:59
things that he's doing are just
00:09:01
incidental to how he's playing
00:09:03
it's more about that
00:09:05
they're being picked up because of the
00:09:06
attitude he's playing with rather than
00:09:08
any kind of precision in what he's going
00:09:10
for this to me sounds exactly the same
00:09:14
there's a few notes here and there a few
00:09:15
little different bits and pieces which
00:09:17
is just kind of how he's playing it the
00:09:19
attitude the feel the flow um
00:09:23
and i wouldn't if for me if i was going
00:09:25
to play this in a band i wouldn't be
00:09:27
bothered about such things like that i
00:09:30
concentrate on the the kind of the
00:09:31
important notes in the solo and then
00:09:34
incidental noises well you just make
00:09:36
those your own if you put them in
00:09:39
and don't try and have to get them
00:09:41
exactly how he does it so what i'll show
00:09:44
you now is um some alternative um
00:09:47
approaches if you take those kind of
00:09:50
things out and you just come up with
00:09:52
okay well what are the core notes to the
00:09:54
solo and i'll show you those and that
00:09:56
actually becomes an easier thing to
00:09:58
learn because a lot of these licks i've
00:10:00
i've found them quite tough to learn to
00:10:02
get those all those little uh individual
00:10:04
things in and even things like the
00:10:06
pinched harmonic in where was that it
00:10:08
was uh lick
00:10:10
or was that lick five
00:10:12
i mean it's i'll be honest just i i
00:10:14
can't do it i
00:10:16
just
00:10:17
i'm concentrating on too many other
00:10:18
things to think about at the same time
00:10:20
oh and i've got to get that particular
00:10:22
pinched harmonica in at that point
00:10:25
so i think he i mean something like that
00:10:27
he'll get just because he's playing and
00:10:29
he's playing with that kind of attitude
00:10:31
and one pops out
00:10:33
and that's kind of like um
00:10:35
i wouldn't worry about exactly nailing
00:10:38
that
00:10:39
i just kind of get the solo down so i'll
00:10:41
show you like how i would approach this
00:10:43
i probably wouldn't go there i probably
00:10:45
wouldn't start here i think that's where
00:10:47
he's playing um
00:10:49
because it's got these double stops
00:10:52
things like um
00:10:54
and where's that that one appears in
00:10:56
lick three and then in lick four you've
00:10:58
got this
00:11:01
now you can't play that up here i mean
00:11:03
that just becomes too difficult
00:11:06
but what i would do is i'd move the
00:11:07
whole solo up to
00:11:09
this position here box position one of c
00:11:12
the whole solos in c by the way
00:11:14
um and i would do it then i would
00:11:15
simplify a few of these licks so lick
00:11:18
one i would do like like this
00:11:29
[Music]
00:11:35
and lick two i wouldn't worry about the
00:11:38
incidental noises i'd just play a
00:11:40
simplified version of that which would
00:11:42
be something like
00:11:44
[Music]
00:11:50
[Music]
00:11:57
okay
00:11:58
and
00:11:59
lick three i uh i wouldn't worry about
00:12:03
hitting two strings at the same time i'd
00:12:05
do something like this
00:12:11
[Music]
00:12:16
hello
00:12:20
[Music]
00:12:25
so lick four i'd simplify i wouldn't
00:12:27
play two two strings the same time i'll
00:12:29
probably just play something like
00:12:35
[Music]
00:12:46
that would leave your index finger here
00:12:47
then for lick four lick five
00:12:51
which gives you in the right position
00:12:53
and i'll go like this
00:13:09
um
00:13:10
so i would do that i kind of simplify
00:13:12
that down as well that slide between the
00:13:14
notes um on the a string
00:13:17
lick six i would then play up here
00:13:23
look 7 i'd probably then just play as
00:13:25
it's written
00:13:30
[Music]
00:13:38
but then lick a this is one i really
00:13:40
would kind of i'd change um
00:13:43
i'd simplify this down to be this
00:14:04
[Music]
00:14:06
when you hear that lick on the original
00:14:08
record and there's this kind of weird
00:14:10
thing going on where and when it gets to
00:14:13
um
00:14:15
it definitely sounds like there's this
00:14:16
bend here
00:14:20
and then when he plays this bit here
00:14:24
the definitely if you slow it down and
00:14:26
listen to it definitely sounds like what
00:14:28
he's doing is he's playing um eight
00:14:31
um
00:14:32
and then taking seven and this is on the
00:14:34
g string i'm bending the seven up to
00:14:36
become the eighth so you get
00:14:38
[Music]
00:14:40
which i'll be honest at that speed
00:14:42
that's kind of tricky to get i i tend to
00:14:45
just slide it down
00:14:48
but if i was doing this
00:14:50
myself in a band i wouldn't worry about
00:14:52
all those kind of little nuances i just
00:14:54
simplified to be
00:14:58
and that he ends it with um on the
00:15:01
original kind of um the last note is the
00:15:04
open a string i'd probably just hit the
00:15:06
uh the d string twice so again that last
00:15:10
lick if you're gonna simplify it i'd do
00:15:11
it like this
00:15:16
[Music]
00:15:19
and then you're back into the
00:15:23
that thing there which i think i just
00:15:24
played it wrong anyway but you know what
00:15:26
i mean
00:15:27
okay so they're all the licks that's how
00:15:30
i would uh
00:15:31
attempt it um if you want a copy of the
00:15:34
tab i'll send you a copy of the tab with
00:15:36
both the um the the original version but
00:15:40
