Итальянский путешественник Марко Поло (XIII-XIV века) рассказывал о вывозе Бакинской нефти в страны Ближнего Востока. В 1803 году (по другим сведениям - в 1798 году) житель Баку Касумбек Мансурбеков пробурил на море вблизи Биби-Эйбата, в 18-ти и 30-ти метрах от берега две нефтяные скважины. История развития нефтяной промышленности в Азербайджане делится на несколько этапов, каждый из которых примечателен своеобразными достижениями. Первый этап начинается с добычи нефти из скважин, пробуренных в 1847 году механическим способом. Впервые нефть промышленного значения была получена в 1847-1848 годах из скважин, пробуренных механическим способом в Биби-Эйбатском, а позже в Балаханском месторождениях и с этого года начинается развитие нефтяной промышленности в Азербайджане. В начале XIX века в Биби-Эйбате впервые в мире была добыта нефть из скважины, пробуренной ручным способом в море - в 30 метрах от берега. В 1859 году в Баку строится первый нефтеперерабатывающий завод (установка). В 1863 году Джавад Меликов построил в Баку керосиновый завод, где впервые в мире были применены холодильники в процессе нефтепереработки. В 1867 году в Баку действовали 15 нефтеперерабатывающих установок. Второй этап начинается в 1920 году после национализации нефтяной промышленности в Азербайджане. В связи с расширением разведочно-поисковых работ в Азербайджане был обнаружен и сдан в эксплуатацию ряд новых месторождений и уже в 1941 году объем добычи нефти был доведен до 23,6 млн. тонн, что составляло 76% добычи нефти в тогдашнем СССР. Третий этап начинается с ввода в эксплуатацию в 1950 году месторождения "Нефтяные Камни", ставшего основой для развития морской нефтяной промышленности в Азербайджане, и продолжается до 1969 года.
