Мухаммад ибн Идрис аш-Шафи'и - основатель шафиитского мазхаба - родился в год смерти имама Абу Ханифы — в 150 году Хиджры (769 г.) в палестинском городе Газа. Он — единственный из четырёх имамов происходит из племени Курайш. Когда умер отец имама Шафи'и, ему было два годика. Мама обратилась к нему и сказала: "Мы - бедные, у нас ничего нет. Я хочу из этого мальчика (своего сына) сделать учёного и также хочу, чтобы он примирил две школы между собой". На тот момент в халифате было две основные мусульманские правовые школы: одна школа - имама Абу Ханифы в Ираке, другая школа - имама Малика в Медине. Он был великим учёным в области Корана, в области тафсира, в области хадиса, в области фикха, также был красноречивым поэтом, знающим литературный арабский язык, был метким стрелком из лука. Он первый, кто основал знания усулюль-фикх, то есть правила, на которые ориентируется фикх (откуда берутся правила фикха мусульманского богословия).
