well the scale is extraordinary so00:08:16
thousands of kilometers have been00:08:19
liberated in a matter of days00:08:22
the russians have been pushed back00:08:24

areas they they'd occupied uh for some00:08:28
time and caught completely by surprise00:08:31
and they've now acknowledged it and uh00:08:33
and pulled out of the whole kharkiv00:08:35

it's significant because we really00:08:39
haven't seen anything like this00:08:41
on either side00:08:43
really in in the war up to now not only00:08:46
a rapid movement forward but but also a00:08:50
rather bedraggled and hurried and00:08:52
panicky uh retreat for from the other00:08:56
side when russia retreated a bit uh in00:08:59
in march they did so in a reasonably00:09:02
orderly fashion when they left00:09:04
the area around heave but but this is00:09:07
obviously with like people behind00:09:09
they've left equipment behind00:09:11
it's not a good look00:09:13
and and how have they00:09:15
allowed themselves to be humiliated in00:09:17
this way how has that been possible00:09:20
well i think what happened was um00:09:24
there's been a well-advertised ukrainian00:09:27
offensive in00:09:28
the south00:09:29
which is still going on it wasn't a00:09:32
faint00:09:33
it's it's uh very important to the00:09:35
ukrainians but the russians diverted a00:09:38
large amount of um00:09:41
of force00:09:43
to meet that offensive and in the00:09:45
process they left other areas rather00:09:47
thinly defended so as a result the um00:09:51
the ukrainians00:09:53
i mean this wasn't just opportunistic00:09:55
the ukrainians i think could be00:09:56
preparing for this they were able to00:09:58
develop yet another front00:10:00
in kharkiv00:10:02
and punch through lines00:10:04
where they were uh poorly prepared uh uh00:10:07
troops in insufficient numbers to cope00:10:10
which was soon um surrounded and00:10:13
bypassed so um i think it it's the big00:10:17
strategic error00:10:19
by the russians but an error that00:10:21
reflects00:10:22
the the extent to which they've00:10:24
exhausted a lot of their capabilities00:10:26
and in the various efforts they had made00:10:28
with their own offensives over the00:10:30
summer which hadn't achieved anything00:10:32
like what the ukrainians have achieved00:10:35
so could this prove to be a really00:10:36
crucial turning point oh yes i mean00:10:40
uh00:10:41
as i've tried to point out the the um00:10:47
when armies collapse it can be quite00:10:48
quick00:10:49
um so now the problem that the russians00:10:52
have got00:10:53
is00:10:54
that uh the00:10:56
the areas that are most important to00:10:58
them about which this war was supposedly00:11:00
all about which is uh the donbas de la00:11:02
scala00:11:04
are now much more vulnerable than they00:11:06
were before and if they start00:11:08
if the russians start losing chunks of00:11:10
them then i think putin is in real00:11:13
difficulties there's already00:11:14
considerable anger so if you if the00:11:17
russians start losing uh donetsk as00:11:21
well parts of them uh then this could00:11:23
cascade so um00:11:26
you know it's hard to get one's head00:11:28
rather possibility that things could00:11:30
move that quickly to it to a quick00:11:32
conclusion but it's to me it seems as as00:11:36
likely as this will drag on for some00:11:37
time right so and a conclusion within00:11:41
weeks potentially00:11:44
yeah i mean we've got to be careful00:11:45
obviously the russians have got a lot of00:11:47
assets in the area there's an awful lot00:11:49
of territory they hold00:11:51
um00:11:52
so it's a question of how what momentum00:11:54
the ukrainians can generate how quickly00:11:57
the the russians can regroup and hold00:12:00
and what the political dynamic is that's00:12:02
been set in motion so uh you know we've00:12:05
always got to be be careful about not00:12:07
getting too far ahead of ourselves but00:12:09
it it it's not impossible the the that00:12:12
uh this will bring matters to a00:12:14
conclusion quite quickly so00:12:17
ukrainian morale is obviously pretty00:12:19
high at the moment00:12:21
and they now know that they can achieve00:12:24
what they claim to be able to achieve00:12:25
but haven't really demonstrated it to00:12:27
the to this extent to now the russian00:12:30
morale by contrast will be pretty poor00:12:33
and what pressure might that put on00:12:34
putin now that could contribute to00:12:37
the end of the war00:12:40
you know it's hard to know because we00:12:42
still know so little about decision00:12:44
making in moscow how well he's informed00:12:47
uh how much he he he grasped the00:12:50
enormity of the of the blunder that he00:12:53
is that he has made and how he can00:12:54
acknowledge this uh whether they'll off00:12:57
suddenly offer some negotiations to try00:12:59
