Description:

The summer days are long and hot, so why don't you join me on a night ride to cool down a bit? Welcome aboard the Intercity tilting train! We are in Biel/Bienne on the shores of Lake Biel and ready to go. This is the last connection to Zurich for the day, therefore it does not follow the usual schedule for the line, which means that a few extra stops are squeezed in. This is the normal procedure for the first and last train of the day on many lines, since it wouldn't make sense to drive past some places, when this last connection may be used instead. You can clearly see the tilting motion in curves. The idea behind tilting trains is to allow for faster cornering speeds than regular trains. This reduces travel time without the need to build new high-speed lines or heavily modifying existing tracks. Just compare a regular train to a car and a tilting train to a motorbike. Cornering fast in a car is possible, but wears the tires faster, is more dangerous than ordinary driving and the lateral forces are unpleasant to the passengers. On a motorbike, it is normal to lay into curves, which results in a little bit more pressure into the direction of seating, instead of lateral forces. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
