00:00:06
today I'm going to be testing a couple
00:00:09
new heads that have come out from grim
00:00:11
reaper and you've probably noticed grim
00:00:13
reapers been on the market for a while
00:00:15
and they've gotten quite a following
00:00:16
i've used them and taken quite a few
00:00:18
animals with them from turkey to hogs to
00:00:22
deer and they've always performed really
00:00:24
well for me but now they've come out
00:00:26
with a couple new additions to their
00:00:29
lineup oh and they have quite lineup
00:00:31
they've got a lot of choices but they
00:00:32
come out first of all with their Pro
00:00:34
Series which utilize an extra super
00:00:37
wicked looking sharp tip okay that's
00:00:40
like it looks pretty tough and then
00:00:42
they've also come out with their micro
00:00:44
series and I really like these micro
00:00:46
series because they're designed for
00:00:48
exceptional flight they've they've
00:00:51
shortened the overall head so they have
00:00:53
a reduced surface area and are supposed
00:00:55
to fly even better so they do that with
00:00:57
the micro Hades I'm going to be testing
00:00:59
that one later but today I'm going to be
00:01:01
testing the micro hybrids and the micro
00:01:05
hybrids are really cool they come in 100
00:01:06
grains as well as 125 grains and they
00:01:09
have three different models of each of
00:01:12
them first of all you'll notice that
00:01:13
they have this short design that's the
00:01:15
micro if you look at their normal
00:01:17
hybrids they're quite a bit longer so
00:01:19
again that's going to aid in flight but
00:01:21
then in terms of the cut they have three
00:01:23
different choices this is the smallest
00:01:26
one it has the one in one quarter inch
00:01:28
wide mechanical heads when deployed the
00:01:32
fixed heads are the same in all of them
00:01:34
they're there one in 1/16 inch those
00:01:36
don't change so you're always going to
00:01:38
get at least that kind of a cut but then
00:01:40
you get in this this mechanical cut you
00:01:42
get the one one quarter and this one you
00:01:45
get a one and three-eighths inch cut so
00:01:47
you're getting a bigger cut there in
00:01:49
that one you can see the difference then
00:01:51
they also make one that's a one and
00:01:53
three-quarter inch cut so it goes one in
00:01:56
one quarter one in three eighths one and
00:01:58
three quarter and that one would be
00:02:00
really great for smaller game or really
00:02:04
high kinetic energy setup I like the way
00:02:06
that there's three different choices
00:02:07
based on your quarry and based on your
00:02:10
kinetic energy
00:02:11
this smaller one would be great for
00:02:13
lighter kinetic energy setups or for
00:02:17
bigger animals this medium one is a good
00:02:19
all-purpose head and then you've got the
00:02:22
bigger one the one and three-quarter
00:02:23
inch cut which would be really great for
00:02:25
like turkeys or or deer or smaller hogs
00:02:28
things like that bear or for higher
00:02:30
kinetic energy setups as I said earlier
00:02:32
so I like the way that there's a lot of
00:02:34
choices and you can see this proseries
00:02:35
tip and those are like wicked I wish you
00:02:38
could kind of zoom in there and see that
00:02:40
but but on a smaller one they have a
00:02:42
little bit shorter tip than on this one
00:02:45
and man that longer tip there just looks
00:02:48
like killer okay so I'm excited to test
00:02:51
these out I'm going to shoot them at
00:02:52
longer range and see how well they do
00:02:54
let's say out to like sixty eighty yards
00:02:56
and see if they fly as advertised and
00:02:59
then I'm going to be putting them
00:03:00
through all the ringers that I do for my
00:03:02
other mechanical heads I'm gonna sue
00:03:04
them through my my layers of MDF half
00:03:07
inch layers of MDF which with a little
00:03:10
rubber foam mat in the front to simulate
00:03:13
hide and I want to see how well these
00:03:15
open sometimes with an over-the-top
00:03:17
opening head like that you don't get
00:03:20
very good opening holes so I'm gonna see
00:03:23
that I'm also gonna see how well they
00:03:26
they penetrate it'll be interesting to
00:03:28
see that for a hybrid head how well it
00:03:31
penetrates that's a lot of kind 2.3
00:03:34
inches of total cut two point four
00:03:36
inches of total cut that's a lot of cut
00:03:38
so I'm interested to see how well it
00:03:40
penetrates with that and I'm really
00:03:41
interested to see how well the blades
00:03:44
and the tip and the whole head hold up
00:03:46
so I'm gonna shoot him through the MDF
00:03:48
then I'm gonna put them in an angle 45
00:03:49
degree angle put the head the wood at a
00:03:51
45 degree angle and see how well they
00:03:54
enter that wood at a 45 degree angle
00:03:56
then I'm gonna shoot him through steel
00:03:58
plate and if they're still doing well
00:04:00
and I don't know if they will be at that
00:04:02
point I'm gonna go ahead and put them
00:04:04
into a cinder block just because it's
00:04:06
always good to test kind of a zero
00:04:09
penetration test to test the overall
00:04:11
integrity of the head it's definitely
00:04:14
not essential for hunting purposes but
00:04:18
the better it does on handle on cinder
00:04:20
block well the better it's going to do
00:04:22
on handling a big femur or something like
00:04:25
that you know or a headshot or whatever
00:04:27
so it's kind of fun just to test them so
00:04:29
I'm going to see what happens with these
00:04:32
heads let's put them through it and see
00:04:34
what happens
00:04:38
[Applause]
00:04:47
[Music]
00:04:59
you
00:05:01
first let's go with the 1 and 1/4 inch
00:05:04
micro hybrid now the 1 3/8 inch micro
00:05:09
hybrid here you can see the entrance
00:05:12
hole of both of them and you see the
00:05:15
fixed blade cut as well as the other
00:05:19
blade deployed the mechanical did deploy
00:05:22
a bit more than I expected we'll pull it
00:05:24
apart and measure it then in terms of
00:05:27
penetration they both blew through the
00:05:29
first layer of MDF and then they
00:05:33
embedded quite well in the second layer
00:05:36
I don't know if you've seen many of my
00:05:38
tests but not a lot of them embed that
00:05:41
well in the second layer especially when
00:05:43
there's such a big cut here you can see
00:05:46
the entrance of the two heads and you
00:05:49
get the full fixed blade cut there go in
00:05:52
long ways in both of them and then in
00:05:54
terms of the mechanical it deployed and
00:05:58
measured out to 3/4 of an inch so
00:06:01
actually that's not bad for over-the-top
00:06:05
deploying ahead to open up 3/4 of an
00:06:08
inch on the initial impact especially
00:06:11
into a soft medium like this that's more
00:06:14
than I would have expected let's see how
00:06:15
it penetrated through the rest of the
00:06:17
medium after that initial layer of mat
00:06:19
this is the entrance into the first
00:06:21
layer of MDF and you can see that the
00:06:24
mechanical portion has opened up to just
00:06:27
about an inch so it hit the foam at it
00:06:30
opened up to three-quarters of an inch
00:06:31
and then by the first layer of MDF it's
00:06:35
almost exactly one inch both of the
00:06:38
heads after going through the mat and
00:06:41
the first layer of MDF in embedding in
00:06:44
the second layer of MDF they blew a
00:06:47
really nice hole to blow the blades open
00:06:49
fully by the back of the second layer of
00:06:53
the first layer of the MDF blew a nice
00:06:56
hole in the heads still are in pristine
00:07:00
condition you can't even tell that
00:07:02
they've been fired yet that's really
00:07:04
pretty impressive now I'm going to shoot
00:07:05
these at a 45 degree angle into the MDF
00:07:08
and first I'll go with the micro hybrid
00:07:13
1/4 inch and now the 1 and 3/8 inch so
00:07:20
here you can see the heads blew through
00:07:22
the first layer and an angle they stuck
00:07:24
in the hidden slide at all they didn't
00:07:27
reach the second layer but they did
00:07:30
penetrate well and it looks like the
00:07:32
blades all held up really well in here
00:07:34
so far these heads have shown very
00:07:36
little signs of wear after going through
00:07:38
a couple layers of half-inch MDF one at
00:07:41
an angle and one straight so now I'm
00:07:43
gonna test them through this steel plate
00:07:44
first the 1 and 1/4 inch now the 1 3/8
00:07:48
inch it was kind of cool I can smell the
00:07:51
burning from some sparks fly in there
00:07:54
here's the penetration through the steel
00:07:56
and through that layer of MDF and also
00:08:00
the foam mat in there you can see that
00:08:03
both broke through the back of that
00:08:05
layer of MDF it's a good look at the
00:08:09
heads and how they cut through the steel
00:08:10
you can see the heads are still embedded
00:08:12
in that layer of MDF down below it will
00:08:15
pull them out in just a second but here
00:08:17
you can see the blades as they cut
00:08:20
through that steel you can see it made a
00:08:22
nice hole but you can also see the cuts
00:08:25
themselves of the main fix blade as well
00:08:28
as the mechanical blades both went
00:08:29
through that so I'm curious to see how
00:08:31
they held up
00:08:32
it looks like the larger one the one in
00:08:35
3/8 inch got a little bit of a bend in
00:08:37
the end of one of the blades there on
00:08:40
the right the other may be a slight bend
00:08:43
in that same blade to the rest the head
00:08:45
so far after going through a couple
00:08:48
layers actually a few layers of MDF half
00:08:50
inch MDF and that steel plate this is
00:08:53
the larger one on the left the one 3/8
00:08:55
inch you can see the the tip is still in
00:08:59
excellent shape and then you can see
00:09:01
that one blade the one mechanical right
00:09:04
there on the right is bent it's hard to
00:09:08
make it out but it is bent just a little
00:09:11
bit it's still open and closed fine but
00:09:13
it's bent a little bit and then you can
00:09:15
see the fix blade this one edge got
00:09:19
nicked up right there in the steel the
00:09:23
other ones still fine
00:09:25
and over here with a smaller one the one
00:09:28
in one-quarter inch looks like all the
00:09:31
blades held up fine
00:09:35
yeah they held up fine well that's
00:09:38
impressive I thought it had bent but it
00:09:40
doesn't look like it did it was just the
00:09:41
angle maybe maybe slightly but they
00:09:43
still open and close fine and yeah he's
00:09:46
held up really well through the steel
00:09:49
plate so let's see how they do into the
00:09:53
cinder block and I think I should say
00:09:54
something like don't try this at home
00:09:56
but dang it I'm right here in my home
00:09:58
I'm trying this maybe don't follow my
00:10:01
example I do have glasses on I'm hoping that
00:10:03
will protect me here if something
00:10:05
shatters and I'm putting a little
00:10:07
barricade in front of me so first the 1
00:10:10
and 1/4 inch now the 1 and 3/8 inch
00:10:20
[Music]
00:10:24
dang that one's stuck so here's the
00:10:27
cinder block and you can see this one's
00:10:29
stuck in here this is the the larger cut
00:10:32
one it got a bit mangled one of the
00:10:35
blades looks like it broke off right
00:10:36
there the other one just bent and the
00:10:40
whole ferrule got pretty bent up there
00:10:42
but man it did stick in and it's hard to
00:10:46
get out okay I'm gonna unscrew the tip
00:10:49
the tip is actually something I think
00:10:51
that screws in and out okay my truth
00:10:55
it's ready to do this without losing a
00:10:56
finger well yeah there we go okay so you
00:11:01
can see both of the heads left a mark
00:11:05
Wow those things are like embedded in
00:11:09
there I've never seen that well that tip
00:11:11
is like way stuck in there so the tip
00:11:16
screws in to place it's like a
00:11:19
replaceable tip I imagine but man that
00:11:22
thing just embedded in that like a like
00:11:26
a bolt or something I don't know if I'm
00:11:28
gonna be able to get that out and then
00:11:30
in terms of heads themselves well you
00:11:34
can see this is the one that I just
00:11:36
pulled out - that tip
00:11:38
that's still in there and then the other
00:11:41
one this is the head that bounced out
00:11:47
- that tip Wow so I I'm pretty impressed
00:11:51
here I didn't expect them to do that
00:11:55
well I thought maybe they'd shatter I've
00:11:56
seen a number of mechanicals who shatter
00:11:58
I certainly didn't expect those tips to
00:12:02
stay embedded there that's really
00:12:05
interesting so pretty tough heads right
00:12:07
here especially for a hybrid cutting
00:12:10
head like that that's impressive there
00:12:12
you have it these feather performers
00:12:14
yeah I gotta be honest I I was surprised
00:12:18
I didn't expect the flight that I got
00:12:21
from the these hybrids at longer range
00:12:25
and it's nice they come with practice
00:12:26
heads so you don't have to be messing up
00:12:29
the heads that you have in the practice
00:12:30
heads fly just like these heads I mean
00:12:33
there you can look at them and see they
00:12:35
look the same so they the brakus heads
00:12:37
flew really well and so they passed all
00:12:40
those tests and then in terms of
00:12:42
penetration
00:12:43
I wasn't expecting much again because
00:12:45
that's so much cut 2.3 inches 2.4 inches
00:12:49
but they actually penetrated pretty well
00:12:52
ok I'd say overall that not as good as
00:12:54
like you know a smaller cut head will
00:12:57
there's no question about that but they
00:12:59
still penetrated fairly well and then
00:13:02
the angled cut they handled the angles
00:13:04
really well the steel I wasn't sure how
00:13:07
the blades would hold up but the blades
00:13:09
actually held it well they use 440c
00:13:11
stainless steel heads or stainless steel
00:13:14
blades which is really nice and they're
00:13:16
0.050 3/5 inches thick which is really
00:13:20
nice so that showed and then I was
00:13:22
really surprised with the 0 penetration
00:13:25
test into the concrete these these pro
00:13:28
series tips just like embedded deeply in
00:13:32
that in that cinder block I can't get it
00:13:34
out I mean I was looking at that just
00:13:36
going man that is impressive it's like
00:13:38
it was it was drilled in there or
00:13:40
something and that's a lot of head that
00:13:42
could be sticking in a bone or something
00:13:44
that would really hurt you saw that you
00:13:47
know when you get an aluminum faire like
00:13:49
that even tough as these are you
00:13:51
saw that the feral itself been up pretty
00:13:53
badly hitting the concrete but that's to
00:13:56
be expected I would say for a mechanical
00:14:00
head like this a hybrid shooting into
00:14:02
cinderblock I would consider that pass
00:14:04
like it did better than I thought it
00:14:07
would do and definitely passes my
00:14:09
threshold of would I use it in the field
00:14:12
I definitely would use these in the
00:14:14
field these are these are really great
00:14:16
heads to consider this coming fall
00:14:18
whatever you're going to hunt there's a
00:14:20
size to match it your kinetic energy and
00:14:24
the animal you're going after you got to
00:14:26
give these a look
00:14:28

00:14:34

  • This feature is available in the UDL Helper extension. Make sure that "Show the video snapshot button" is checked in the settings. When you click on it, the current frame from the video will be saved to your computer in JPEG format.
