on uh football growth and football
00:30:49
development in the last few years they
00:30:52
have just won the under 20 in Asia
00:30:55
congratulations again they did did great
00:30:58
at uh the FIFA under 20 World Cup in

Argentina they qualified as well for the

00:31:08
another great Asian country who will
00:31:11
host the World in uh November December
00:31:14
for the under 17 World Cup so you see
00:31:17
that um a lot of work is going on I came
00:31:20
here in May last year and have been
00:31:23
witnessing the progress that uh that has
00:31:26
been done also with the
00:31:27
Academy and with the engagement and
00:31:30
investment of uh the whole government
00:31:33
thank you prime minister please convey
00:31:35
my thanks as well to the president of
00:31:38
usbekistan who I had the honor to meet
00:31:40
in May when I came and also to meet no
00:31:43
less than two weeks ago in New York at
00:31:45
the occasion of the United Nations week
00:31:48
and we have been able to assess together
00:31:51
the progress of uh football in this
00:31:55
country because uh leadership of course
00:31:58
comes from the football administrators
00:32:00
but comes also from the state and in
00:32:03
usbekistan we have a head of state who
00:32:05
is truly committed to football and
00:32:07
working together with the
00:32:09
football uh Federation the results we
00:32:13
can see them and going forward there is
00:32:15
much more to come because uh we will
00:32:17
host the World here in usbekistan next
00:32:21
year with u the footall World Cup
00:32:25
2024 foot
00:32:28
who is a competition who is a sport that
00:32:31
is growing immensely all over the world
00:32:34
as well and uh uh when I came here in
00:32:37
May I visited the Arenas where uh the
00:32:40
footsal World Cup will take place I can
00:32:41
assure you right now while you will all
00:32:43
come of course that this will be the
00:32:45
best FIFA footall World Cup ever and we
00:32:49
host it here in usbekistan here in
00:32:51
tashka and thank you very much for that
00:32:55
now like AFC see also in FIFA you know
00:32:58
that we have made u a lot of uh progress
00:33:02
in the last few years I don't want to
00:33:05
say too many things because you have
00:33:08
also a congress an AFC Congress in a few
00:33:10
weeks and I still have to keep a few
00:33:12
things to say at that Congress but uh I
00:33:16
think it is important to always remember
00:33:19
and remind ourselves of uh where we came
00:33:22
and where we are going especially
00:33:24
because this is also linked with uh
00:33:27
leadership which is a topic of uh this
00:33:30
conference so we have been able to
00:33:33
invest much much more as you know in
00:33:36
football by obliging I would almost say
00:33:39
the zones to organize Regional
00:33:43
competitions but obliging them of course
00:33:45
with investment with support by asking
00:33:50
the federations to invest in news to
00:33:52
invest in women's football to invest in
00:33:55
schools and and to make football grow
00:33:58
and we did that by
00:34:00
multiplying all our solidarity programs
00:34:04
the forward program by a multiplier of
00:34:06
seven so each Association now has 2
00:34:08
million every year at least as a minimum
00:34:11
to invest in football development as
00:34:14
opposed to 250 $300,000 us before this
00:34:18
makes a difference but this makes a
00:34:20
difference only of course if we invest
00:34:23
the money in the right projects in the
00:34:28
right way and in this respect we also
00:34:31
have introduced the new Talent
00:34:33
Development scheme under the leadership
00:34:36
of uh a great Sports and Technical
00:34:39
leader like Arsen Wanger who is
00:34:42
overseeing this project to give every
00:34:45
Talent everywhere in the world a real
00:34:49
chance a chance to shine a chance to
00:34:53
grow and a chance as well to play at the
00:34:57
global stage and in order to Foster
00:35:00
competitions we have decided as well as
00:35:02
of 2025 to have under 17 World Cups not
00:35:06
every two years but every year and not
00:35:09
just with 24 teams but with 48 teams so
00:35:13
double the number of teams from each
00:35:16
continent and we have doubled as well
00:35:18
and this is probably one of the most
00:35:21
important achievements uh that we have
00:35:24
been managing to do so far we have
00:35:27
doubled the number of Asian teams in the
00:35:29
men's World Cup also for the Women's
00:35:31
World Cup the men's World Cup of which
00:35:34
we had the best ever organized in Qatar
00:35:39
only uh a few months is less than a year
00:35:42
ago we had fantastic Women's World Cup
00:35:44
as well in Australia and New Zealand and
00:35:47
the
00:35:49
qualifiers for Asia for the next men's
00:35:53
World Cup which will be in Mexico Canada
00:35:55
and United States in in 2026 will start
00:35:58
now and uh well for the first time you
00:36:02
have eight and a half teams who can
00:36:05
qualify or who will qualify for the
00:36:07
World Cup double the number of teams as
00:36:11
in the past of course this will have a
00:36:14
great impact in football in Asia because
00:36:18
suddenly all of you all of you can dream
00:36:22
of being part of the World Cup can uh
00:36:26
leg legitimately have the ambition of
00:36:30
participating in the greatest event on
00:36:34
Earth and everything that goes with that
00:36:37
the passion the fans the Investments is
00:36:40
exactly targeted to make football grow
00:36:45
everywhere now leadership of course
00:36:48
means as well to uh listen to everyone
00:36:53
to learn from uh past
00:36:57
mistakes and uh of course only great
00:37:01
leaders make also mistakes we all make
00:37:04
mistakes when we try to do things we
00:37:06
have to learn from them and we have to
00:37:07
move forward and Leadership especially
00:37:10
in our divided World means as well to
00:37:14
bring people
00:37:17
together only three days ago at the FIFA
00:37:22
Council we brought the world together
00:37:27
unanimously we decided that
00:37:31
uh it would not be the right thing to go
00:37:34
divide it into a bidding process for
00:37:38
hosting the biggest event on Earth the
00:37:42
FIFA men's World Cup and we came with a
00:37:46
proposition with
00:37:48
a proposal that uh brings together on
00:37:53
one side the celebration of the 100
00:37:55
Years of the World Cup in 2030 with
00:37:58
three games being played in Uruguay
00:38:00
Argentina and Paraguay in South America
00:38:03
where everything started 100 years ago
00:38:07
in
00:38:08
1930 and then also bringing two
00:38:11
continents like Africa and Asia together
00:38:13
to host the World Cup in Morocco Spain
00:38:18
and Portugal United whilst the world is
00:38:21
divided football and FIFA are uniting
00:38:25
and that's why I'm happy to see you all
00:38:26
here also United because in 2034 we will
00:38:31
come east again we're having as I said
00:38:35
already this year the under 17 in
00:38:37
Indonesia we will have the club World
00:38:40
Cup in Saudi Arabia in December we'll
00:38:42
have in February the beach soccer World
00:38:45
Cup in the United Arab Emirates and in
00:38:48
2034 we come again East with uh uh the
00:38:52
buiding open to Asia and ocean of course
00:38:57
it is our wish and our ambition that
00:39:00
also this process can be done in a
00:39:03
smooth and
00:39:05
United Way because uh we need to have
00:39:08
occasions where we bring people together
00:39:12
where we'll bring people together to
00:39:14
meet new
00:39:16
cultures to uh meet each other in a
00:39:21
peaceful in a joyful atmosphere you've
00:39:25
witnessed that in the latest world World
00:39:26
Cups uh uh in in in the latest men's
00:39:29
World Cup as well in in Qatar where uh
00:39:33
everyone came everyone enjoyed and we
00:39:37
had a true true celebration of football
00:39:40
so we are looking very much forward to
00:39:43
uh coming back to usbekistan and to Asia
00:39:48
many many times in the near future and
00:39:52
uh wishing you a great conference
00:39:57
wishing you all the best thanking you
00:39:59
for having me here I uh let you continue
00:40:03

01:23:51
we don't take for granted and it's a
01:23:53
real privilege being here on behalf of
01:23:55
my Confederation um I guess it's also a
01:23:57
privilege to go first I see there's two

a peny shootout so I have the honor of
01:24:05
going first today um you know the the
01:24:10
the topic itself leadership um lot
01:24:13
written about it lot discussed uh all of
01:24:16
us in this room are leaders uh in
01:24:18
whichever Federation you're at uh
01:24:21
whatever position you're in um but in
01:24:25
the end I think it you know for me it's
01:24:28
also about a great question what makes a
01:24:30
great leader we heard our president
01:24:32
before talk about some of the skills and
01:24:36
some of the traits that are required and
01:24:38
I think in in a lot of ways
01:24:40
traditionally leadership has always been
01:24:42
looked at in terms of the persuasiveness
01:24:46
of a leader is the leader a power broker
01:24:50
um a you know are they what are their
01:24:54
skills but I think things have changed
01:24:57
and I'm here today to not talk about the
01:24:59
institutional definition of leadership
01:25:02
but really that pose many questions
01:25:05
because I don't have the answers of what
01:25:07
leadership is you have the answers and
01:25:10
only you can actually answer those
01:25:12
questions because leadership is about
01:25:15
what you want to make it and so my
01:25:18
presentation or my discussion really
01:25:21
it's not really a presentation
01:25:22
I like to think of it as a as a chat I
01:25:24
know we had coffee outside but just
01:25:26
think of it as a continuation of coffee
01:25:29
um for those of you that know me uh and
01:25:32
there's quite a few out there um I
01:25:34
prefer to have these chats over coffee
01:25:38
um so I'm here to provoke and really the
01:25:41
first question that I want to ask to us
01:25:45
as a
01:25:46
group not only what is what what makes a
01:25:50
great leader
01:25:52
but how next slide
01:25:57
please is there a present part of the
01:25:59
presentation is it loaded
01:26:02
up oh sorry there you go so I don't have
01:26:06
my assistant here and I I don't know how
01:26:08
to work things there we
01:26:13
go can you tell me how
01:26:15
to
01:26:21
next
01:26:24
so it's for me it's defined by three
01:26:27
questions first and foremost where are
01:26:30
you looking to anticipate
01:26:33
change obviously like football
01:26:35
anticipation was is one of the key
01:26:37
elements of being a good footballers
01:26:39
it's also one of the key ingredients of
01:26:41
being a great leader and where are you
01:26:44
looking for that where do you spend your
01:26:47
time as a leader and who do you spend it
01:26:50
with are you able to see around the
01:26:52
corner both as an individual and as
01:26:56
someone who's leading an organization or
01:26:58
a
01:26:59
group and really you have to
01:27:02
Define how you want to lead your
01:27:05
organization in the vernacular of
01:27:08
leadership uh many talk about what's
01:27:10
called the Golden Circle how how group
01:27:12
how companies run in the middle of the
01:27:15
circle is the Y wh Y and then the
01:27:19
outside circles are the what and the
01:27:23
how most
01:27:26
organizations the average ones go from
01:27:29
the outside in they tell you the what
01:27:31
and the how what do we do we develop
01:27:34
football how do we do it we put on
01:27:36
competitions we have development
01:27:38
officers but the key to having a great
01:27:41
organization is to run it from the
01:27:43
inside out and Define the why why are
01:27:48
you doing this what is your
01:27:51
motivation
01:27:53
and since we all flew here um I thought
01:27:57
I could relate a little bit of a
01:27:59
story um it's about Aviation it gives
01:28:03
you an
01:28:04
example of the difference between when
01:28:06
you look at it something from the inside
01:28:08
out from the why and then look at the
01:28:10
what and the how and then the how and
01:28:12
the what and the inside of the why so
01:28:15
over a 100 years ago 1903 to be
01:28:20
exact we discovered
01:28:23
flight the aircraft was discovered by
01:28:26
the R Brothers and we all heard about
01:28:28
the R
01:28:30
Brothers however a footnote to history
01:28:33
was that many people back in 1903 kind
01:28:36
of like the dotcom era uh of a few years
01:28:38
ago were trying to discover flight and
01:28:42
there was a big race to see who was the
01:28:44
first and there was a gentleman by the
01:28:46
name of Pont
01:28:48
langry an American Harvard educ
01:28:53
educated top among his
01:28:55
peers plugged in with the government was
01:28:58
given a $50,000 Grant to discover flight
01:29:01
and $50,000 in 1903 was a lot of
01:29:05
money a lot of money he would then
01:29:08
established a dream
01:29:10
team of
01:29:13
scientists and his peers because he
01:29:16
wanted to discover flight and be the
01:29:19
first to do
01:29:20
it what however why did he want to do it
01:29:25
the reason he wanted to do it is because
01:29:27
he wanted to be rich and he wanted to be
01:29:29
famous and that was a sole
01:29:33
motivation go over to
01:29:36
Ohio where the right
01:29:38
brothers were trying to do the same
01:29:41
thing no education no money they ran a
01:29:45
bike
01:29:46
shop to the point where every time they
01:29:49
went out to test their homemade aircraft
01:29:53
they've bought five sets of parts from
01:29:55
the bike shop because every time they
01:29:57
tried something the plane would
01:29:59
crash however on December 7th
01:30:02
1903 the r brothers and their group of
01:30:06
volunteers who all
01:30:07
believed in their vision and what was
01:30:10
their Vision what was their why the R
01:30:13
Brothers believe that this
01:30:15
Innovation would change the world which
01:30:17
we all know it did because that's why
01:30:19
we're all sitting in this room or else
01:30:20
we wouldn't be able to get here and
01:30:23
that's why they did it there was no
01:30:25
other motivation their why was to change
01:30:28
the
01:30:29
world and so on December SE December 7th
01:30:34
1903 aircraft and flight was discovered
01:30:37
and to prove the
01:30:39
point that Samuel Pier Langley didn't
01:30:43
ever Define his why was never able to
01:30:45
lead his team and he was doing it the
01:30:48
wrong way is that the day that the New
01:30:51
York Times published that the right
01:30:53
Brothers discovered flight he
01:30:55
quit
01:30:57
quit he didn't say let me figure this
01:30:59
out let me take it to the next level he
01:31:01
just
01:31:02
quit and that is why it's very important
01:31:05
as a
01:31:06
leader is that you
01:31:08
must figure out the why of you as an
01:31:12
individual and your
01:31:13
organization because in the end defining
01:31:16
the why is based on two fundamental
01:31:19
things trust and loyalty
01:31:23
trust and loyalty which is why people
01:31:26
are always motivated to do
01:31:28
things another great leader Martin
01:31:31
Luther King human rights leader back in
01:31:34
the 60s there was a lot of human rights
01:31:36
leaders but he kind of stood above all
01:31:38
of them why because he was able to
01:31:41
define the why get
01:31:45
a monument I have a
01:31:48
dream he defined his why he didn't say I
01:31:52
have a plan here's my 10 points here's
01:31:55
my 20 points and this is how we're going
01:31:56
to get voting rights this is how we're
01:31:58
no no he said I had a dream and people
01:32:01
believed in this
01:32:02
dream so this is very important to
01:32:05
Define your why as a leader that helps
01:32:08
you anticipate change and helps you
01:32:10
create what I call a AAA
01:32:12
environment the right atmosphere the
01:32:15
right attitude and
01:32:20
action
01:32:24
the second
01:32:26
question is what is a diversity measure
01:32:29
of your
01:32:32
network this is quite
01:32:35
important because as we see not only
01:32:38
here in your Confederation in my
01:32:40
Confederation in World football we're
01:32:43
very
01:32:44
diverse different races different
01:32:47
religions but what's unique about our
01:32:50
football is that the football
01:32:52
itself that he's holding up for a throw
01:32:55
in there doesn't speak a
01:32:58
language it's not belonging to one
01:33:02
race has no
01:33:04
religion and this is what unifies US is
01:33:08
the love of that ball that rolls as a
01:33:11
good friend of mine likes to say it's
01:33:14
the smell of the grass that inspires us
01:33:16
although this is Turf so it's kind of
01:33:17
hard to
01:33:18
smell and so what is your capacity as a
01:33:21
leader to develop
01:33:24
relationships with people that despite
01:33:26
your differences you're able to come
01:33:29
together and achieve your
01:33:31
goals that is the key to your diversity
01:33:34
it's to to surround yourself with people
01:33:37
who are critical thinkers that think
01:33:39
differently from you not to surround
01:33:42
yourself with people that always want to
01:33:43
say yes because ultimately you never
01:33:46
will reach your potential as an
01:33:49
organization and ensure that at the end
01:33:51
the end of the day as a leader that you
01:33:54
care because people do not care that you
01:33:58
know if they don't know that you
01:34:01
care you can be the most highest IQ the
01:34:04
most powerful person if they don't know
01:34:06
that you actually care it would be very
01:34:08
difficult to motivate your
01:34:11
organization in the Strategic direction
01:34:13
that you want it to go and is diversity
01:34:16
that drives creativity and
01:34:20
innovation
01:34:22
you as a leader are not responsible for
01:34:24
your job I am not responsible to be the
01:34:28
conap president I'm responsible for the
01:34:31
people who are doing their job at conaf
01:34:35
my general secretary my Chiefs my
01:34:37
directors the person that answers the
01:34:39
phone calls that's my
01:34:41
responsibility I always ask people in a
01:34:44
smaller
01:34:46
environment who is your number one
01:34:48
stakeholder who's the number one
01:34:50
customer of your organization as a
01:34:51
president of the Federation and I won't
01:34:54
put anybody on the spot here but
01:34:56
invariably these are the answers I
01:34:57
always get oh leagues
01:35:01
clubs um in my case member
01:35:04
associations no the most important
01:35:08
person as a leader of an organization
01:35:11
and I can relate it to myself as
01:35:12
president of a confederation is my
01:35:15
staff the most important people to me
01:35:18
are my staff because they are the ones
01:35:21
that will take care of what needs to
01:35:23
happen because if I don't take care of
01:35:25
them they will not take care of my
01:35:29
constituency so that diversity is very
01:35:42
important I got to figure out how to use
01:35:44
this thing
01:35:45
here
01:35:49
courage before I go on to
01:35:52
courage I think another thing that's
01:35:55
very important in your
01:35:57
diversity is our game is a finite sport
01:36:04
11 11 versus 11 90 minutes of
01:36:07
football um 34 34 games on the schedule
01:36:13
or 20 you know 64 games in the world cup
01:36:16
all very finite measured by wins losses
01:36:19
or
01:36:20
draws however we as leaders are in an
01:36:25
infinite Arena not a finite Arena we are
01:36:29
not measured by those dynamics of our
01:36:33
sport we are measured against a
01:36:35
competition of ourselves we are
01:36:38
competing with ourselves to get better
01:36:41
we are also competing not only with
01:36:44
ourselves but within our organization
01:36:45
how do we get better as a collective and
01:36:49
so I think that's very important is the
01:36:51
jxap POS between our sport that we love
01:36:54
and the results and the win and the
01:36:56
losses um but also how we conduct
01:36:59
ourselves off the pitch ensuring the
01:37:02
longevity because when we're
01:37:05
gone this will continue and so it's very
01:37:09
important that we understand that that
01:37:12
our role as a leader is not about only
01:37:15
the today it is about the tomorrow and
01:37:18
ensuring that the tomorrow is going to
01:37:20
happen
01:37:22
I think the third question that I always
01:37:25
like to throw out is
01:37:27
courage and courage is not about you
01:37:30
know being tough and and and be able to
01:37:33
take a punch and all that kind of
01:37:36
stuff as a leader courage is not an
01:37:40
inner strength courage is an external
01:37:44
strength you that comes from others
01:37:47
doesn't come from you it comes from the
01:37:50
network that you have built
01:37:52
the relationships that you fostered
01:37:54
individually in your life in your
01:37:56
organization that's where the courage
01:37:58
come
01:37:59
from don't get me wrong it is it's not
01:38:02
easy to be a leader in your position or
01:38:05
any of our position at times it's
01:38:06
thankless it's not always easy to do the
01:38:09
right
01:38:11
thing but you have to start asking these
01:38:14
questions are you courageous enough to
01:38:17
abandon your past in both what made you
01:38:20
successful or not
01:38:22
now a lot of us for instance I I'll use
01:38:24
my own example at
01:38:25
conaf I took over after a very
01:38:28
tumultuous time was not that hard to
01:38:33
change what was done in the past but now
01:38:36
we've evolved into a different
01:38:37
organization after six years with
01:38:40
tremendous
01:38:42
growth we need to change again we need
01:38:45
to abandon what has made us successful
01:38:47
in the last six years to take us to
01:38:49
another ceiling to create another
01:38:52
ceiling and so that is very important as
01:38:56
we move forward and you see that with the
01:38:59
greatest of our athletes always
01:39:01
changing some of our greatest coaches
01:39:04
adaptability of the coach because
01:39:07
they've abandoned what's made them
01:39:10
successful some may or may not agree
01:39:12
with me but I think one of the most
01:39:13
successful managers in the history of
01:39:16
the
01:39:17
world is
01:39:20
celotti
01:39:21
and what has made him successful not
01:39:24
because he can run a great training
01:39:25
session but he has adapted and he's been
01:39:28
very courageous in abandoning what has
01:39:29
made him successful at Chelsea and
01:39:32
applying different metrics at Real
01:39:34
Madrid Napoli Everton back to Madrid
01:39:39
that is a constant change and so those
01:39:42
are very important metrics I think as a
01:39:44
leader to understand what that
01:39:48
takes the real Poison for for us as
01:39:52
Leaders is being
01:39:54
comfortable and always going along to
01:39:57
get along we need to dare to be
01:40:01
different really need to be dare to be
01:40:03
different it doesn't matter what arena
01:40:05
that you're in whether it's a
01:40:06
confederation a federation a league or a
01:40:10
club and you have to have a very strong
01:40:13
strategic Compass as a leader
01:40:17
self-awareness a very high emotional
01:40:19
quotient and the Very Clarity of purpose
01:40:23
for you and for your
01:40:25
organization I'll give you an example of
01:40:28
clarity of purpose and how that works in
01:40:29
our
01:40:31
organization so back in the 60s we were
01:40:33
trying to put a man on the
01:40:35
moon and of course NASA was it was a
01:40:39
race to put a man on the moon and
01:40:40
obviously NASA was successful I think it
01:40:42
was
01:40:43
1963 some of you may remind me if that
01:40:46
that's a correct year or not uh I wasn't
01:40:48
born yet so that's why I'm saying that
01:40:52
um and after they were successful um
01:40:57
they had a survey done of the
01:40:59
organization and they went to the people
01:41:04
actually one specific woman who was uh a
01:41:07
janitor she she cleaned the hallways and
01:41:10
she cleaned the toilets of Nassau and
01:41:14
they asked her what do you do what's
01:41:17
your job here she goes my job is to put
01:41:20
a man on the moon
01:41:21
that was her
01:41:23
answer now that answer is amazing not
01:41:26
just on her but amazing on the leaders
01:41:28
of nasau at the time because they had
01:41:31
such a Clarity of purpose of putting the
01:41:33
first man on the moon that that not
01:41:36
wasn't only the people that were in the
01:41:37
control center um making sure the
01:41:40
astronauts were safe but also it
01:41:43
trickled right down to the person that
01:41:44
clean the toilets she felt she was as
01:41:48
important in the mission
01:41:51
as a as the as the person in the control
01:41:53
room that to me is leadership that
01:41:57
Clarity of purpose in your
01:41:58
organization is what I call tremendous
01:42:02
leadership and it's really important
01:42:05
also as we have as we know and many of
01:42:07
you have have experienced it yourself is
01:42:10
the emotional stamina that is
01:42:12
required in our
01:42:14
leadership you really have the emotional
01:42:16
stamina to withstand the countercurrents
01:42:19
that come at you you always find
01:42:22
people and it's it's amazing when you
01:42:25
have that courage You'll Always Find
01:42:28
people not always the usual same
01:42:30
suspects that will join you when you
01:42:33
have that Clarity of
01:42:36
purpose and ultimately I think this
01:42:39
brings you to ensuring as a leader in
01:42:42
today's modern
01:42:43
world vulnerability is very
01:42:46
important as we've seen even coming out
01:42:48
of the pandemic um
01:42:51
the world has shifted the world has
01:42:53
changed vulnerability is good it is not
01:42:56
a sign of
01:42:57
weakness because it's the vulnerability
01:42:59
of you as a leader that leads to an to
01:43:03
having an
01:43:04
environment a trusting culture and a
01:43:07
loving culture within your
01:43:09
organization and I can say one of things
01:43:11
I'm most proud of as president of conaf
01:43:14
is a Rous Pursuit that we've
01:43:17
had in that
01:43:19
clarity
01:43:21
and for me for those of you that
01:43:24
experienced coming to some of our events
01:43:27
is
01:43:29
that our Clarity and our mission has
01:43:32
always been
01:43:33
Unity it hasn't been about football our
01:43:36
secret s has been unity and why because
01:43:39
we were a dysfunctional family A
01:43:42
Dysfunctional Family amongst our regions
01:43:45
and if you see our logo that was up
01:43:47
there before actually it's right in the
01:43:48
corner there it's a circle of 41
01:43:52
members and to me that was an important
01:43:55
that is our why right there that is why
01:43:58
we exist as coner CAF it is the unity of
01:44:00
41 members yes we put on tournaments yes
01:44:03
we do development yes we have member
01:44:05
associations yes we do finance and all
01:44:07
the other thing but at the end of the
01:44:09
day it's our unity and is our only our
01:44:12
Unity that can drive us to the next
01:44:15
level and and so for
01:44:18
me to sum it up
01:44:21
I asked you the question what is a great
01:44:22
leader in the beginning I'll answer that
01:44:25
question it'll be the only one I answer
01:44:28
um in the end I think a great leader is
01:44:30
one who stands preparing for the
01:44:32
realities of
01:44:36
today and preparing for the unknown
01:44:39
possibilities of
01:44:42
tomorrow and ultimately having that
01:44:44
driving
01:44:46
ethos that leadership is about service
01:44:49
not about power
01:44:51
thank
01:44:53
you thank you very much M I'll see if uh
01:44:57
I was going to ask if there's any
01:44:58
questions more happy to answer any
01:45:00
questions now we open the floor for any
01:45:02
questions thank you you can raise your
01:45:05
hand and our AFC colleagues will bring
01:45:07
you the
01:45:09
mic
01:45:19
please
01:45:35
um well it's not really a question um I
01:45:38
would if you allow me I would uh rename
01:45:42
the title to the guide for a great
01:45:45
leader so thank you very much I really
01:45:48
loved it thank you thank you thank you
01:45:50
thank you very much appreciate the
01:45:52
comment thank you very
01:45:55
much another question first row one back
01:46:00
there good morning my name is shot I'm
01:46:03
the head of international Department
01:46:05
usbekistan fa just a quick
01:46:08
question uh should we take into account
01:46:11
the difference in mentality when we are
01:46:14
talking about the
01:46:17
leader yeah I obviously when you say
01:46:20
difference in mentality you mean the
01:46:22
person that you're talking to yourself
01:46:24
both yeah yeah you know I think um and
01:46:29
you heard president fantino obviously
01:46:31
talk about it before I I think listening
01:46:33
is one of the most important obviously
01:46:35
skills uh listen understanding you know
01:46:38
the beauty about this world is that
01:46:40
we're all different right that is really
01:46:42
the beauty about this world and somehow
01:46:44
somehow we've survived I don't know how
01:46:46
old this world is but uh the thousands
01:46:49
of years that we've been on this planet
01:46:51
and I really think I really think the
01:46:54
power of the sport is the key here you
01:46:58
know when I said earlier that the ball
01:47:00
doesn't
01:47:01
really uh speak any language and we've
01:47:04
all been in
01:47:05
situations traveling amongst our travels
01:47:07
where we don't speak the language of the
01:47:09
taxi driver um or the person at the
01:47:12
hotel but somehow some way when they
01:47:15
know you're in football oh boy right
01:47:17
they know how to speak I mean I heard a
01:47:19
great story
01:47:21
um I think it was last
01:47:23
year um this uh fisherman um was off the
01:47:28
he was hanging on to a p he was hanging
01:47:31
on to a piece of wood off the coast of
01:47:34
Nigeria and a fisherman came by and says
01:47:38
just hold on and he was about to go
01:47:39
under and they started talking about
01:47:41
Arsenal and his favorite club and that
01:47:43
gave him the motivation to actually hang
01:47:46
on to the wood and actually survive and
01:47:48
so I think what's important is is
01:47:51
focusing on what connects you
01:47:54
identifying that early early in the
01:47:56
relationship identifying early in the
01:47:58
conversation and really focusing on that
01:48:01
I think that's the key because to your
01:48:02
point obviously you're going to be
01:48:04
different from the person across from
01:48:06
you right however ways you are but I
01:48:09
think the key is identifying the
01:48:11
commonalities of of your discussion and
01:48:14
a lot of times it always comes back to
01:48:16
that thing up
01:48:19
there thank you very much Mr manalani
01:48:22
another
01:48:23
question uh thank you so much uh
01:48:25
president uh for this wonderful
01:48:28
presentation I just like to ask you uh
01:48:31
this uh we've always been told that if
01:48:33
you want to have different results then
01:48:37
you should change the way you do things
01:48:39
yeah so but then you said that if you if
01:48:42
you're successful then you have to be
01:48:44
courageous enough to actually change
01:48:46
that successful you know the way you're
01:48:49
doing things yeah so uh can you just
01:48:51
explain a little more on that because if
01:48:53
I have a successful sort of with this
01:48:55
thing already why would I want to change
01:48:57
that because ultimately one of the best
01:49:02
sports for that because our sport it's
01:49:04
it's different you win the league you
01:49:06
win the title why would you change but
01:49:08
you have to because because standing
01:49:10
still means you haven't changed the
01:49:13
reality is if you look at one of the
01:49:15
greatest athletes ever Tiger
01:49:17
Woods he had won everything and he
01:49:20
changes his swing you're going why would
01:49:22
you change your swing when you just won
01:49:26
the Masters and everything that he won
01:49:28
the reality is those iconic great
01:49:32
athletes know that you need to change
01:49:35
even what made you successful to get you
01:49:37
to another level and to even prolong
01:49:40
your success and this is why I think as
01:49:43
an organization any organization Club
01:49:46
League um Federation Confederation is
01:49:50
that at some point you have to take that
01:49:52
inventory and say okay great we have
01:49:53
been successful but going along we are
01:49:56
going to slow down here right at some
01:49:58
point it's going to slow down and that's
01:50:01
why you have to anticipate that change
01:50:03
right not when you're starting to go
01:50:05
down the hill when you know the hill is
01:50:06
coming and that's where you have to
01:50:08
anticipate the change and say okay we
01:50:10
need to abandon not everything there's
01:50:11
some things you're going to carry on but
01:50:13
we need to we need to change how we do
01:50:15
things even some of the things that were
01:50:17
successful in order for us to now go to
01:50:19
the Next
01:50:22
Level thank you very much Mr
01:50:31
Zoo thank you V just now you last
01:50:34
comment you saying there is a power
01:50:36
actually is saice the leader but I want
01:50:40
to ask you that is the even how you said
01:50:43
that you are the Kaka president St you
01:50:46
have a power and influence how to be a
01:50:48
positive impa to the football so that
01:50:51
meaning that not only the service but
01:50:53
also you have a power to move forward
01:50:56
for the our football so what is the
01:50:59
positive impact from power and influence
01:51:03
so I want to ask you the question for
01:51:05
that yeah I I think for me I mean for me
01:51:08
I've
01:51:09
always I mean listen I I you can ask him
01:51:13
my staff so when I'm actually in the
01:51:15
office I if anybody calls me president I
01:51:17
tell them stop right there I never allow
01:51:20
them to call me president ever when I'm
01:51:23
when I'm there I'm their
01:51:25
pure so for me leadership is not about
01:51:28
kissing the ring it's
01:51:30
about brothers and arms or brothers and
01:51:33
sisters's arms and so listen influence
01:51:37
is about is about joining the
01:51:40
camaraderie it's not about influence in
01:51:44
the way that even historically has
01:51:46
happened and so for me it's about
01:51:48
creating that atmosphere spere that I
01:51:50
talked about um and that's how because
01:51:54
the influence is not coming from one
01:51:56
person it's coming from a collective and
01:51:59
when you have that Clarity it's a lot
01:52:01
easier to influence the direction of the
01:52:03
organization when you have that
01:52:05
Collective it's very difficult to do it
01:52:07
when you're on your own and so really in
01:52:10
the end you really don't have any power
01:52:12
right you have the perception of power
01:52:14
because leadership is not a rank it's
01:52:17
not a rank right uh you know like in the
01:52:21
military right and if you and if you
01:52:24
just do it on Authority in the end
01:52:26
that's a zero sum game right in the end
01:52:30
everybody chooses to be a leader it
01:52:32
doesn't matter where you choose it every
01:52:34
day you look to your right you look to
01:52:36
your left and and you say okay how are
01:52:39
we going to do this right and it doesn't
01:52:41
matter at what level so leadership is
01:52:43
actually a choice it's not about Rank
01:52:45
and authority and so with that you gain
01:52:48
even more influence and if you want to
01:52:52
use the word power great but uh I think
01:52:55
that it's really the influence of the
01:52:57
organization and how that pushes forward
01:52:59
that's the
01:53:01
key thank you very much are there any
01:53:03
questions from the
01:53:12
floor thank you see a hand up over
01:53:15
there uh Alex Phillips consultant for
01:53:18
FIFA and AFC
01:53:20
great
01:53:21
presentation um you mentioned the
01:53:23
importance of staff and you also
01:53:27
mentioned trust and
01:53:29
loyalty and I just wondered which do you
01:53:33
prioritize if it comes down to a choice
01:53:36
between competence the best people for
01:53:38
the job but also trust and
01:53:43
loyalty trust because you can have a
01:53:47
high competent person but if you don't
01:53:49
trust trust them in the end and there's
01:53:52
a whole graph on that by the way um in
01:53:55
fact the Marines have a graph on that uh
01:53:58
where they have it in in in sectors High
01:54:01
trust High trust High competency high
01:54:04
high competency High trust is is
01:54:07
excellent but if I had to choose between
01:54:09
trust and competency I choose
01:54:13
trust all the time because high high
01:54:16
competency zero trust will ultimately
01:54:19
fail your
01:54:23
organization thank you very much are
01:54:26
there any questions from the
01:54:30
floor
01:54:32
please good morning and uh thank you for
01:54:34
a great presentation um KH Al Salim I'm
01:54:37
the General Secretary of West Asia
01:54:39
Football Federation um the World Cup is
01:54:42
coming to your region soon how how does
01:54:45
that um EV historic event change your
01:54:49
leadership or your role within cona to
01:54:52
ensure that um the commercial elements
01:54:56
within cona are um sustained after this
01:55:00
historic event how do you make sure that
01:55:03
this event leaves a lasting impact um on
01:55:06
your member associations um given that
01:55:09
this is a historic chance to to take it
01:55:11
forward with your member associations
01:55:13
were you in my meeting last week in the
01:55:16
office no no I wasn't um it's a great
01:55:21
question and because all of you are
01:55:23
going to face it all of us are going to
01:55:25
face it obviously you faced it in the
01:55:27
region now with u
01:55:29
congratulations my dear friend for a
01:55:31
fantastic World Cup um it was the
01:55:34
greatest ever um until 26 maybe maybe
01:55:38
maybe that'll be the greatest ever so
01:55:40
Shake HED congratulations um you know
01:55:43
every time a World Cup is in your region
01:55:45
and obviously Australia and New Zealand
01:55:47
just went through that with the Women's
01:55:48
World Cup and even the women Women's
01:55:49
World Cup um has a massive impact I mean
01:55:52
I ched the Women's World Cup in 2015 in
01:55:55
Canada which had a massive impact that
01:55:57
is all ultimately a very important
01:56:00
question because the World Cup is such a
01:56:02
massive asset now more than it has ever
01:56:05
been and when it comes into your
01:56:07
region and that how do you unlock its
01:56:12
potential for the benefit of the whole
01:56:16
right not sure we figured it out yet I
01:56:18
got to be frank with you um and uh and
01:56:21
for us at coner cab it's a bit easier
01:56:23
because we do business in the
01:56:25
US and uh and obviously Mexico so it's a
01:56:29
little easier for us because we're
01:56:31
already there but for us the
01:56:34
quintessential question is how is it
01:56:36
going to benefit the other 38 Mas all
01:56:39
right uh some of those questions are
01:56:41
linear but some of them are not so
01:56:43
linear and it's the ones that are not so
01:56:45
linear that are very important to answer
01:56:47
because those are the ones that that
01:56:49
have longevity and that are years and
01:56:51
years down the road you know at the end
01:56:53
of the day for me the biggest Legacy of
01:56:56
any World Cup and we've all lived it is
01:56:59
everyone in this room if they close
01:57:01
their eyes right now and probably say a
01:57:04
10 years old 12 years old I remember
01:57:07
this world cup and I remember this
01:57:08
player and I remember this game and I
01:57:10
remember this goal I mean I can do it
01:57:12
right
01:57:13
now that is a legacy for me as an
01:57:15
individual that drives me to this day
01:57:18
and so some of that Legacy will be built
01:57:20
in within your country and how does that
01:57:23
Propel the World Cup because at the end
01:57:25
of the day the World Cup means different
01:57:27
things to different people but to me
01:57:29
it's really the driving force for
01:57:30
everything in football now not
01:57:32
everybody's going to win the World Cup
01:57:33
not everybody's going to qualify for the
01:57:34
World Cup you just need to figure out
01:57:36
your journey to the World Cup right in
01:57:39
terms of what it means how does it drive
01:57:41
the sport uh it could it could be just a
01:57:44
play and a qualifier it could be just a
01:57:45
score it could be but you know young
01:57:48
young ath thetes young players you know
01:57:52
we know we'll never win a World Cup they
01:57:54
don't know that and so you need to
01:57:56
bottle that to to see how you can drive
01:57:59
that energy into your youth of your
01:58:01
country to take it to the next level and
01:58:03
so it's a great question I I don't think
01:58:06
I really have the answer but for us it's
01:58:08
a little easier in the us because we do
01:58:11
our business there so we're already
01:58:13
working on some of those strategies in
01:58:15
terms of a legacy from a commercial
01:58:17
aspect and we're working with FIFA on
01:58:19
that as as well so so um but uh I think
01:58:22
that's a very important question as you
01:58:23
move forward to 2030 and and ultimately
01:58:26
2034 in your
01:58:28
region thank you very much everyone and
01:58:31
thank you Mr monani for your insightful
01:58:33
presentation we would like to ask Mr
01:58:35
mutani to remain on the stage and invite
01:58:38
AFC senior vice president Mr Zozo for
01:58:42
the AFC pennant presentation
01:58:47
ceremony thank you
01:58:56
[Applause]
01:59:01
thank you very much Mr monani Mr zza you
01:59:04
may take your
01:59:07
seat
01:59:10
thanks now we would like to invite the
01:59:13
second speaker of the day the AFC
01:59:15
General Secretary Dr serener John to the
01:59:18
stage thater John will speak about
01:59:21
shaping and inspiring leadership culture
01:59:24
that delivers success on and of the
01:59:27
field in Asian
01:59:28
[Music]
01:59:35
football thank you uh
01:59:42
aimay I was just sitting down there
01:59:45
where's
01:59:46
Wahid please don't put Victor next time
01:59:49
to speak in front of my before me okay
01:59:52
has taken most of my
01:59:55
points
01:59:57
anyway um dear
02:00:01
friends the topic that was given to me
02:00:03
was shaping and inspiring leadership
02:00:05
culture that delivers success on and off
02:00:07
the field in Asian football I believe
02:00:09
this is the longest topic that this my
02:00:12
team has given to me but what uh they
02:00:15
told me is please share your experience
02:00:16
as an AFC General Secretary having seen
02:00:19
the whole realm of
02:00:21
football as a player as a
02:00:24
coach as um
02:00:27
referee uh working in U Regional
02:00:30
association club
02:00:32
football working for FIFA development
02:00:35
office and finally in AFC and I think
02:00:38
that is what I would like to uh to to
02:00:41
share today and uh from this topic I've
02:00:44
broken into two parts the first one is
02:00:48
uh leadership by
02:00:49
example and the second one is an
02:00:53
Institutional leadership
02:00:56
approach we heard a lot about uh trust
02:01:00
in the first session from Victor and
02:01:02
some questions were asked also about
02:01:05
trust and uh that is takes me to the
02:01:08
first uh
02:01:10
Point see anyone can lead by
02:01:14
example and as Victor mentioned every
02:01:17
one of you is a leader
02:01:19
because you are President you are a
02:01:21
general secretary you have your
02:01:24
positions to to lead an organization a
02:01:27
team your
02:01:30
staff but the most important is you can
02:01:32
lead by simply demonstrating the
02:01:35
positive and admirable values that
02:01:39
Inspire and motivate others to do the
02:01:41
same I want you to just think about
02:01:43
three words here the
02:01:45
values Inspire and motivate I think
02:01:49
President johnni also mentioned that
02:01:50
shik Salman mentioned in his speech and
02:01:52
also Victor mentioned u a little bit as
02:01:56
a
02:01:57
leader and in terms of leadership by
02:02:00
example for me the first one would be
02:02:03
having Integrity being responsible I
02:02:06
think if you want someone to trust you
02:02:09
and Victor mentioned it corre correctly
02:02:12
your you need to get the trust of your
02:02:14
immediate team your staff or your
02:02:17
management team or the people working
02:02:19
around you this is the most important if
02:02:21
you cannot get their trust then it's
02:02:24
it's going to be
02:02:25
tough and I believe that leadership by
02:02:28
example as a leader having that
02:02:31
Integrity is critical because you will
02:02:34
earn broad respect not only from the
02:02:37
team around you but also the people
02:02:39
outside because they know that with
02:02:42
Integrity you as a leader with Integrity
02:02:45
will be able to be responsible to
02:02:50
deliver for the organization for the
02:02:53
stakeholders for the people making the
02:02:55
right decisions because they know you
02:02:57
are a person of Integrity so I feel that
02:02:59
the
02:03:01
foundation the number one in
02:03:04
being trying to be a a leader or
02:03:07
providing leadership by example is
02:03:10
integrity and we all know Integrity is
02:03:13
basic foundation in a human character in
02:03:17
relationship building and it's true
02:03:20
without trust a relationship cannot last
02:03:24
long because you will slowly be found
02:03:26
out and that's trouble for any
02:03:29
leader and that leads me to the second
02:03:32
point if I want to be a leader if I want
02:03:35
to be the General Secretary of the AFC
02:03:37
and if you want to be leaders in your
02:03:39
own areas you must have some form of you
02:03:43
must be technically ASU we are in the
02:03:45
football business and if we do not know
02:03:48
what we are our means then we are in
02:03:49
trouble so we need to always equip
02:03:53
ourself with the latest knowledge
02:03:56
because the game is evolving
02:04:00
tremendously and in our business to
02:04:02
excel we must have the knowledge we must
02:04:06
have the technical ability yes we have
02:04:08
good people around us we have all the
02:04:11
experts around us but as a leader we
02:04:13
also must be able to learn we also must
02:04:17
be able to provide information
02:04:19
and continue to learn about the
02:04:22
game and believe me there is so much to
02:04:26
learn about our game that is football
02:04:30
and uh being technically astute having
02:04:34
the knowledge of the game knowledge of
02:04:36
the business we all say football is an
02:04:38
industry so one part the business side
02:04:41
another part the game itself and of
02:04:44
course the other decision making
02:04:46
processes that comes along the way of a
02:04:48
lead leader we must be able to be astute
02:04:53
in delivering whatever that is being
02:04:56
required of
02:05:01
us we heard from Victor about
02:05:06
vision and uh Victor by the way I also
02:05:09
wanted to tell the same story about the
02:05:11
NASA story because when AFC was working
02:05:15
on a vision and mission for the AFC
02:05:19
one of my team reminded us about the
02:05:21
NASA story where the the cleaning lady
02:05:24
also had the same vision as the
02:05:27
leadership of the country as the
02:05:29
technicians and the scientists and so on
02:05:32
so for us as a leader I must be able I
02:05:36
must have the ability to inspire and
02:05:39
motivate first of all to make sure that
02:05:42
my team sees my vision as well if my
02:05:45
closest team around me is not able to
02:05:48
see the the vision then we have a
02:05:49
problem if I cannot convince my team
02:05:53
about the vision how am I going to
02:05:55
convince the people around who are away
02:05:57
from you on the vision that the
02:06:00
organization has so for me I think the
02:06:04
ability to inspire and motivate by
02:06:08
sharing a collective vision is very
02:06:10
important and we as leader we must lead
02:06:14
by an example first of all the vision
02:06:17
must inspire first as a leader it's not
02:06:21
just speaking to someone the vision must
02:06:24
Inspire and motivate us as a leader
02:06:27
first and how this
02:06:31
vision is then shared with the team and
02:06:34
how every team member contributes toward
02:06:38
achieving this vision and when in 2016
02:06:41
when the AFC president announced the
02:06:44
vision for the AFC we had three visions
02:06:47
the first one is to be a leading
02:06:51
Confederation we didn't want to say the
02:06:52
best
02:06:54
Confederation we just said the leading
02:06:56
Confederation because we knew off on the
02:06:59
pitch we still have a lot of work to do
02:07:02
but that doesn't stop us to be good to
02:07:05
be the best of the
02:07:07
pitch and there's so many things that we
02:07:09
have done that we have been
02:07:11
leaders in the area of management event
02:07:16
management leadership we have proven
02:07:19
that we are also a leading Confederation
02:07:22
in that aspect and inspiring and
02:07:26
motivating others to ensure that they
02:07:28
also believe in the vision because they
02:07:30
also going to benefit from us achieving
02:07:34
the vision because it's a collective
02:07:35
benefit it's a collective vision for the
02:07:38
organization itself so as a leader for
02:07:41
me I must make sure that I'm able to
02:07:44
inspire and motivate then people see
02:07:47
this vision that you have for the
02:07:54
organization the next one is a good we
02:07:57
must be a good we must be a good
02:08:01
communicator and uh when I say good
02:08:05
communicator not only in delivering
02:08:08
information okay but we also must be an
02:08:12
active listener and that's why for this
02:08:15
conference we have brought Mark Milton
02:08:17
an expert in in in uh
02:08:20
uh showing us how to be good listeners
02:08:24
how to be active listeners a leader who
02:08:26
does not
02:08:29
listen is heading to failure because the
02:08:31
best people who can give you what is
02:08:34
happening on the ground are the people
02:08:35
around
02:08:37
you they know the pulse of what is
02:08:40
happening more than the leader himself
02:08:42
so it's good to have a good team it's
02:08:44
good also to provide information for
02:08:47
them but more
02:08:49
important to listen actively listen to
02:08:53
what others have to say and Victor
02:08:56
mentioned we have to change yes you have
02:08:59
had success you have to change to raise
02:09:02
the bar and to go to the next level and
02:09:05
there active listening is also very
02:09:08
important because what do the members
02:09:10
want what do what does my team want what
02:09:13
is the management team telling about how
02:09:15
we are doing the work and we as leader
02:09:19
if I as a leader in the AFC if I'm not
02:09:21
able to listen to some of the ideas some
02:09:24
of the changes that need to be made that
02:09:26
is given by my team around me then I
02:09:29
would not be able to be a good leader by
02:09:32
example because they are going down and
02:09:35
they are listening to their team whether
02:09:38
in the Departments or in the divisions
02:09:40
so it goes up and up right to the leader
02:09:43
that we must be able to be good
02:09:45
communicators and uh I believe that
02:09:50
true leaders will have more listening
02:09:53
skills than speaking skills because you
02:09:58
always have people around you to deliver
02:10:00
the messages but you as a leader must be
02:10:03
able to be a good communicator both in
02:10:06
sharing information and also in active
02:10:13
listening the next point is the ability
02:10:17
to direct provide Direction as a
02:10:22
leader and at the AFC we know Asia very
02:10:27
Diversified a lot of
02:10:29
challenges time differences 8 hours time
02:10:32
differences a lot of flight
02:10:35
hours um cultural differences a lot of
02:10:38
traditions that are
02:10:41
different and there's
02:10:43
always opportunity to provide Direction
02:10:46
because we always are in operational
02:10:49
mode
02:10:52
always and uh if we do not understand
02:10:56
the current situation of what is going
02:10:59
on and Victor mentioned an important
02:11:01
word anticipate and if you're not able
02:11:03
to anticipate what would be the next
02:11:06
steps that we want to do that's going to
02:11:08
be very
02:11:09
difficult take an example of a manager
02:11:12
or a
02:11:14
coach probably he puts the team for the
02:11:17
game and he has his
02:11:19
substitutes he has given instructions he
02:11:21
given direction to the team how you
02:11:23
should play the
02:11:24
game but then as the game
02:11:27
progresses he is not satisfied with the
02:11:30
instructions that he has already
02:11:32
provided he's continuing to give
02:11:34
directions to give the information to
02:11:37
the
02:11:38
team and a lot of matches are
02:11:43
warn not because of the first
02:11:46
11 but also so because of the perfect
02:11:51
substitution that has been made at the
02:11:54
right time making the right substitution
02:11:57
sending in the right player is a skill
02:11:59
by itself and making it at the right
02:12:02
timing is also because you the coach
02:12:06
then provides a direction for the team
02:12:08
after the substitution how they are
02:12:11
going to play the match because there
02:12:13
could be a difference in the tactics of
02:12:15
how they're going to play the match so
02:12:17
as a lead leader leading by example we
02:12:20
must always be ready to provide the
02:12:24
direction when your team comes to you
02:12:26
and say look we have a situation now
02:12:28
what do we do we simply cannot say go
02:12:31
find the solution you must be part of
02:12:33
the solution you must be be able to sit
02:12:36
down with your team and give the
02:12:38
direction what shall we do now how can
02:12:42
we do this how can we solve this problem
02:12:45
and this is really important for a
02:12:47
leader a true leader will not run away
02:12:50
from providing direction to his team and
02:12:53
I say as I mentioned and also as Victor
02:12:56
mentioned the people around you will be
02:12:58
looking towards you for that direction
02:13:01
and at that critical point you need as a
02:13:04
leader I would need to give a direction
02:13:07
to my team I need to say what we should
02:13:10
do what or what what the options could
02:13:13
be because they are expecting you as a
02:13:16
leader to provide that direction and the
02:13:20
last point in this first part leadership
02:13:22
by
02:13:23
example is the ability to coordinate I
02:13:27
think this is a very important skill for
02:13:29
a a leader I am blessed because I come
02:13:33
from a technical background I've done
02:13:36
competitions uh played the game a little
02:13:38
bit I've been a referee a little bit uh
02:13:41
being a coach a little bit so it gives
02:13:43
me the added advantage to have a good
02:13:45
coordination I could understand what
02:13:47
what is it to coordinate how much of
02:13:50
empowerment that I can give my two
02:13:52
Deputy General secretaries how much do I
02:13:55
Empower my directors to carry on with
02:13:58
the job but then at the end of the day
02:14:01
you as the leader must be able to
02:14:04
coordinate and to be able to coordinate
02:14:07
you must understand I must understand
02:14:10
what is needed what is needed by the
02:14:13
organization what is needed by my team
02:14:16
because they also need to to deliver
02:14:19
what has been expected from them and as
02:14:22
a leader I also need to acquire the
02:14:25
required resources and distribute these
02:14:28
resources accordingly and when I talk
02:14:31
about resources talk about knowledge
02:14:33
talk about experience that is necessary
02:14:37
to do our job as a leader and these days
02:14:40
we have young people who are joining our
02:14:43
organizations very young people who are
02:14:45
joining and they have different needs
02:14:48
they have different entitlements but
02:14:50
they highly motivated they're very
02:14:52
creative so me as a leader I must be
02:14:56
able to mix and match the very
02:14:59
experienced staff that I have the very
02:15:01
knowledgeable staff that I have and also
02:15:04
the young ones who want to contribute so
02:15:08
I would feel that as a leader we must
02:15:10
have this skill set the ability to
02:15:13
coordinate within our team so that they
02:15:17
would be able ble to fully achieve the
02:15:19
vision that is set forth for the
02:15:24
organization now I'll move on to the
02:15:26
second
02:15:27
part that
02:15:29
is the AFC an Institutional approach
02:15:34
looking from the organization
02:15:36
itself how do we approach leadership
02:15:39
from from within the
02:15:43
organization again the word trust come
02:15:46
and one of the most important element
02:15:48
here to cultivate trust amongst the
02:15:53
management team amongst the staff
02:15:55
amongst the member associations a
02:15:57
regional Association presidents and also
02:16:01
General
02:16:02
secretaries because trust is the
02:16:05
Cornerstone of bringing people and
02:16:08
institutions together if we trust one
02:16:11
another the relationship become stronger
02:16:15
so the foundation the strength and I
02:16:18
believe the the the most important thing
02:16:20
in relationship building is trust
02:16:23
because once someone trust you trust the
02:16:27
organization they will know that the
02:16:29
organization always does the best for
02:16:33
the people for the stakeholders the
02:16:35
organization will always make the right
02:16:37
decisions because it wants to make sure
02:16:40
that the the the stakeholders and and
02:16:44
and and the people who are expecting
02:16:47
something from the organization will not
02:16:49
be disappointed and
02:16:51
remember AFC as an organization member
02:16:55
associations Regional associations FIFA
02:16:59
and all the other stakeholders we all
02:17:01
journeying together and as we journey in
02:17:05
these different cultures different
02:17:07
Traditions different religions we all
02:17:10
learning from each other and it's
02:17:12
difficult if we do not trust each other
02:17:15
it's going to be very difficult and
02:17:16
that's why one of the the one of the
02:17:18
things that we always say at the AFC is
02:17:21
unity and
02:17:25
solidarity unity and
02:17:28
solidarity now Unity does not mean
02:17:31
uniformity we all do not have to wear
02:17:34
the same dress to be united we all can
02:17:36
wear our own uniforms and dresses
02:17:39
because that does not determine if you
02:17:41
are united uh Unity is doesn't have to
02:17:44
be we don't have to be in uniform Unity
02:17:48
goes beyond that it is relationship
02:17:51
based on trust this is what as the AFC
02:17:56
we try to present this from my side as
02:17:58
the general secretary my team my two
02:18:01
deputies and my directors and the staff
02:18:04
we'd like to present ourselves to our
02:18:06
members to say look you can trust us
02:18:09
because we will do what is right we will
02:18:12
do what is the best for our members as
02:18:16
an organization
02:18:18
and the second part is an inspiring
02:18:22
vision the AFC has done has has his
02:18:26
vision okay and we want to make sure as
02:18:29
an organization to express this vision
02:18:32
and Inspire everyone and I always tell
02:18:35
my team AFC does not have a team
02:18:38
football team we will not be be be uh
02:18:42
evaluated in a World Cup it's the member
02:18:44
associations that have the team but the
02:18:47
success success of Our member
02:18:49
Association is then the success of the
02:18:51
AFC because it's the member associations
02:18:54
it is you that play in tournaments it is
02:18:57
you that play in the World Cup it is you
02:18:59
that participate in events so your
02:19:03
success becomes our success but before
02:19:07
that we then as an organization provide
02:19:10
you the vision of what we want to do we
02:19:13
want our Asian teams to succeed at the
02:19:16
world stage not once not twice but
02:19:19
consistently we want to see our Asian
02:19:22
team consistently beating the best in
02:19:24
the world not in one tournament what in
02:19:27
not in two tournaments but in every
02:19:29
tournament because I believe that it
02:19:32
will inspire us to deliver our purpose
02:19:35
honor our responsibilities and also
02:19:38
fulfill our objectives of shared
02:19:42
benefits and I mentioned earlier your
02:19:44
success becomes afc's success
02:19:49
and the third
02:19:51
one motivating and supporting
02:19:54
performance by supporting as an AFC by
02:19:58
supporting through necessary guidance
02:20:00
and resources this and we know
02:20:03
that the many programs that we have
02:20:06
launched whether in development whether
02:20:09
in
02:20:10
technical
02:20:11
refering all these are geared towards
02:20:16
motivating and supporting performance
02:20:19
from each of Our member associations and
02:20:23
also by paying attention and recognizing
02:20:27
thinking and effort that both surpasses
02:20:31
expectations you know and equally that
02:20:34
enable us to learn and improve we we are
02:20:36
learning all the time we at the AFC
02:20:39
Administration are always learning from
02:20:42
the member associations always learning
02:20:44
from FIFA learning from our sister conf
02:20:47
federations how they are doing things
02:20:50
and as Victor mentioned earlier the
02:20:52
success today is good nice to have but
02:20:56
then we need to move forward quickly so
02:20:58
that our benchmarks our threshold goes
02:21:01
Higher and Higher and we need to evolve
02:21:04
to reach bigger successes and bigger
02:21:07
victories in the future so motivating
02:21:11
and supporting performance is important
02:21:15
for the AFC and we try try to do this as
02:21:18
much as we can we initiate programs we
02:21:22
initiate uh uh uh uh we have reformatted
02:21:25
our club competitions we want to make
02:21:27
sure that those who are running fast we
02:21:32
are helping them to run even faster and
02:21:34
for for those who are walking we want to
02:21:37
make sure that they can start to run and
02:21:39
for those who are still you know
02:21:41
crawling we want them to start walking
02:21:44
but that does not mean that we don't
02:21:46
appreciate those who are running fast we
02:21:48
do not want those who are running fast
02:21:50
to say we don't want to tell them please
02:21:53
stop because you need to take care no we
02:21:56
we can't do that because the Top member
02:21:59
Association the top teams are
02:22:01
challenging the best in the world we
02:22:03
want them to run faster and whatever we
02:22:07
can do as an organization we will do
02:22:09
whether it's changing formats whether
02:22:12
it's uh more programs whether it's
02:22:14
raising the standards we will continue
02:22:16
to do that because we want to challenge
02:22:19
the best in the
02:22:23
world creating a learning culture we all
02:22:27
can learn from each others like I said
02:22:29
Asia is so much to learn
02:22:32
Diversified amazing
02:22:35
cultures amazing talents in Asia and we
02:22:38
want to learn from each other and as an
02:22:40
AFC as an organization as an institution
02:22:43
our approach would be to create a
02:22:46
learning culture
02:22:48
the conference is a testament to that we
02:22:51
bring people together the presidents the
02:22:54
general secretaries the expert speakers
02:22:57
that we have brought from all over the
02:22:58
world so that we can learn from one
02:23:02
another it's important that we continue
02:23:05
to learn and we as an organization must
02:23:07
create this culture of learning all the
02:23:10
time and also to encourage to think each
02:23:14
one of each one of us to think out of
02:23:16
the box there so many ways of achieving
02:23:19
success so many ways of defining success
02:23:22
now we need to provide the platform as
02:23:25
an organization we need to ensure that
02:23:28
we are creating a culture of learning
02:23:32
because there's so much opportunities
02:23:34
out there for us to
02:23:38
grab the fifth one will be post
02:23:41
fostering cooperation within and across
02:23:43
the game this is in our statutes one of
02:23:47
statutes to make sure that we are
02:23:49
fostering relationship with one another
02:23:52
and this we do in many ways and we are
02:23:54
always uh conscious of the fact that
02:23:58
AFC Asia is
02:24:01
different I have to say from all our
02:24:04
friends who are outside of Asia we are
02:24:06
very different we are very warm we are
02:24:08
very
02:24:09
hospitable that's Asia and we want to
02:24:13
Foster this cooperation not only within
02:24:16
Asia but also within our sister
02:24:19
confederations who are also represented
02:24:21
here also with FIFA and our external
02:24:25
stakeholders as well because like in
02:24:28
football every player cannot play on his
02:24:31
own he is dependent on his teammate they
02:24:34
have a collective objective that is to
02:24:36
win the game and therefore we want to
02:24:39
make sure that even amongst us the big
02:24:42
member associations are supporting the
02:24:45
smaller associations even even within
02:24:47
the smaller associations they're working
02:24:49
together they're supporting one another
02:24:52
to ensure that we achieve the collective
02:24:56
benefits of being part of Asia Asia is
02:25:02
amazing place to be and that's why FIFA
02:25:05
so it's not a surprise that FIFA has
02:25:07
brought competitions to Asia it's not a
02:25:10
surprise every time there is a World Cup
02:25:13
in Asia at all levels every time we see
02:25:17
there's an event in Asia there must be a
02:25:19
reason why FIFA is having all the events
02:25:22
in
02:25:24
Asia there must be a reason because we
02:25:27
are good host we are hospitable we are
02:25:30
warm and we always deliver the
02:25:33
expectations we always go beyond the
02:25:36
expectations of the people around us so
02:25:40
like in every function in a match every
02:25:43
player in a match who's dependent on his
02:25:46
teammate made we too are dependent on
02:25:49
each other and if we are dependent on
02:25:51
each other we might as well have a
02:25:53
strong bond might as well have a strong
02:25:56
relationship because that will then help
02:25:58
us to achieve our objectives and the
02:26:01
final
02:26:03
one is delivering benefits for and
02:26:07
Beyond
02:26:08
football what what do I
02:26:11
mean football itself we all know you
02:26:14
know in your own countries how football
02:26:17
is an amazing game that can can change
02:26:22
lives so we must use
02:26:26
football to the benefit of those who do
02:26:30
not have
02:26:32
hope the less
02:26:35
privileged the needy out there who is
02:26:38
depressed because football can bring joy
02:26:41
to them football can bring hope to them
02:26:43
and as an organization AFC we want want
02:26:46
to make sure that we are always
02:26:49
accessible to those underprivileged
02:26:52
those who are in need those who are uh
02:26:55
you know have so much that they have
02:26:58
gone through in their life we want to be
02:27:00
there so that we
02:27:03
can ensure that whatever we are
02:27:06
benefiting can go beyond all of us who
02:27:09
are sitting here and reach all those who
02:27:12
are not here across Asia and we want to
02:27:16
play the that part and I want to finish
02:27:19
by saying this A wise man
02:27:22
said
02:27:24
leaders should not be married to their
02:27:27
titles and
02:27:30
positions leaders should not be married
02:27:33
to their titles and positions because if
02:27:37
they are married to their titles and
02:27:39
positions then they will do everything
02:27:42
in their power to keep the titles and
02:27:45
positions that means they will
02:27:48
compromise even their character and
02:27:51
integrity to keep the positions but
02:27:54
leaders must be married to a
02:27:57
purpose because once you know the
02:27:59
purpose you have been called to be a
02:28:01
leader then whatever you do will be to
02:28:06
achieve that purpose and not to keep
02:28:09
your positions this is what I have
02:28:11
learned and uh this is what I feel I
02:28:15
always tell myself I'll tell my staff
02:28:18
when the day
02:28:19
comes to leave your
02:28:22
position you must not be you must not
02:28:24
even think twice because you have served
02:28:27
your
02:28:28
purpose thank you very much any
02:28:31
questions thank you very much drj for
02:28:35
your presentation now we would like to
02:28:37
open the floor for any
02:28:42
questions are there any questions from
02:28:44
the floor please
02:28:48
thank you um I think we should keep a
02:28:52
mic next to
02:28:54
me um thank you very much uh Dai For the
02:28:58
um uh great presentation I think the um
02:29:02
the key word that we heard today from
02:29:05
your presentation and Victor's is
02:29:08
trust and um you know I'm I'm very proud
02:29:12
to be a member in uh in AFC one of the
02:29:16
compan confeder one of the few
02:29:17
confederations that have sailed through
02:29:20
the challenges in the past few years
02:29:23
especially through co uh through Co I
02:29:26
mean um we are one of the confederations
02:29:29
that kept our competitions alive and we
02:29:32
kept our activities alive and of course
02:29:35
with this um there must be a great team
02:29:39
behind behind this and I know that team
02:29:41
because we work very closely and I have
02:29:44
to commend you for for your management
02:29:47
style um but your team is very diverse
02:29:53
it's from all over the continent um so
02:29:56
if I may ask what could be the
02:29:58
challenges that you face when you deal
02:30:01
with such a diverse team yet gain their
02:30:06
trust and get
02:30:08
results I think uh for me speaking for
02:30:14
myself I think my team at least the
02:30:17
people around me I would say the the the
02:30:19
main team is the two Deputy directors
02:30:22
and the the ma the the directors I would
02:30:26
say with all humility I think they trust
02:30:30
the knowledge that I have because having
02:30:32
been in the business for 30 over years I
02:30:34
think they trust the knowledge that I
02:30:36
have that I'm able to to help them make
02:30:38
good
02:30:39
decisions I uh don't hold on to the
02:30:43
power I Empower them so and they know
02:30:46
that they know that for example this
02:30:48
conference is totally run by uh the
02:30:51
deputy General Secretary Wahid and his
02:30:52
team they delivered this conference not
02:30:55
me so if you say come to me and say
02:30:57
congratulation for a good conference
02:31:00
thank you very much I know I have a good
02:31:02
team behind me to deliver so if you can
02:31:07
set your vision to them and say this is
02:31:10
what we want to achieve we want to be a
02:31:12
leading
02:31:13
Confederation they all know they have to
02:31:15
deliver the best to achieve that leading
02:31:18
Confederation Vision so as a leader even
02:31:21
if you have a diverse team around you
02:31:23
you can bring them all together with the
02:31:26
right showing them the right Vision so
02:31:28
that's I believe they all know what is
02:31:31
expected they know what we want to
02:31:33
achieve as an organization and I just
02:31:36
let them do the
02:31:40
job thank you very very much you good
02:31:43
question are there any questions from
02:31:45
the floor
02:31:49
good
02:31:50
morning
02:31:58
Mongolia
02:32:15
for
02:32:19
fore
02:32:23
spee
02:32:29
for
02:32:45
spee
02:32:50
so good afternoon ladies and gentlemen
02:32:52
the General Secretary of the Mong
02:32:54
fotball Federation Mr daor so I totally
02:32:57
agree with the all the speakers about
02:32:59
the trust for the teamwork and good
02:33:01
delivery of the leadership however I my
02:33:04
question is um have to manage the
02:33:08
mentality in order to have a good
02:33:10
teamwork result so especially in the
02:33:12
football the stakeholders are so diverse
02:33:15
such as coaches players and team leaders
02:33:18
and staff however the every aspect of
02:33:22
the stakeholders have own diverse and
02:33:25
the unique feature and um based on the
02:33:30
good teamwork result of course
02:33:32
everyone's contribution is important but
02:33:35
uh main focus of the my question is have
02:33:37
to manage the mentality and such a
02:33:40
relevant aspect to have the good result
02:33:43
of the leadership of the teamwork
02:33:46
thank you good question how to manage
02:33:49
mentality any psychologist
02:33:52
here I think as a leader you need a bit
02:33:55
of everything you need to be a father
02:33:58
figure you need to be a mentor you need
02:34:02
to be um teacher sometimes sometimes you
02:34:06
need to be a uh dictator you need all
02:34:10
these elements in the leadership so that
02:34:12
you can deal with the different mindsets
02:34:14
of people that you have
02:34:18
but what do we tell HR department do you
02:34:21
hire skills and expertise or do you hire
02:34:25
attitude get the right people that's the
02:34:28
most important thing when you as a
02:34:30
leader have the opportunity to hire to
02:34:32
decide on your team make sure you have
02:34:35
that decision first make the right
02:34:37
decision to hire the right people around
02:34:41
you that's the most important thing the
02:34:43
people that you believe will people
02:34:46
people that will understand the goal
02:34:48
that you have the vision that you have
02:34:49
and the people that are able to be uh to
02:34:52
to be responsible enough to deliver now
02:34:55
I'm not asking you to hire all the yes
02:34:58
mens I always have my fights with Shin
02:35:02
Shin I always have I have arguments with
02:35:05
uh with Wahid but that's a healthy
02:35:07
relationship that's where you bring the
02:35:10
best out of your team to come and
02:35:11
challenge you as a leader doesn't mean
02:35:14
that you need to have all Yes Men having
02:35:16
the same mindset no they also need to be
02:35:19
able to challenge you you must be able
02:35:21
to challenge them and then we come to a
02:35:23
good conclusion finding solutions for
02:35:26
whatever crisis or whatever problems
02:35:28
that we have in place you will not be
02:35:31
able to
02:35:32
achieve everything perfectly but I think
02:35:35
if they know what you are trying to do
02:35:38
is both for the best I think that's
02:35:40
already a good start to have the right
02:35:43
people I think it's finished very much
02:35:46
and last
02:36:00
question uh datuk V
02:36:04
excellent presentation and what Victor
02:36:10
delivered the leadership part you
02:36:14
brought into more of the football part
02:36:18
of the leadership my question is like as
02:36:22
football
02:36:23
leaders what we see is that most of them
02:36:28
are successful in
02:36:31
delivering the
02:36:33
objectives the vision within the
02:36:36
football setup the what my question
02:36:40
is is are the leaders in football doing
02:36:47
enough because in certain countries
02:36:50
football is number one sports certain is
02:36:52
number two certain five certain 10 but
02:36:56
then how as leader in football are able
02:37:01
to build the trust outside the football
02:37:05
Community what is that the
02:37:09
responsibility of the leader to do that
02:37:12
to achieve something bigger so that to
02:37:16
continuously we position football as you
02:37:20
mentioned you know that football should
02:37:23
you know like create hope create you
02:37:27
know change life are you know we have
02:37:31
also social projects you know that
02:37:33
definitely you know delivered and in
02:37:37
collaboration with many Global
02:37:39
organizations as well but
02:37:42
then are we as Leaders doing enough to
02:37:47
position football and to change the
02:37:51
world in a way the world is going
02:37:54
through and if you have the opportunity
02:37:58
to position AFC as the leading you know
02:38:03
as the leading organization then what is
02:38:06
that the message you will give to the
02:38:09
leaders of football who are present here
02:38:12
thank
02:38:14
you big question
02:38:16
thank you I think uh we all need to be
02:38:20
honest in the job that we have been
02:38:23
asked to do I think that's the most
02:38:25
important to the members have elected at
02:38:28
least you me I've been appointed but you
02:38:31
as As Leaders as the presidents or
02:38:33
people holding positions I think members
02:38:37
have elected you to a position of
02:38:39
leadership and there's a lot of
02:38:42
expectations from that position they're
02:38:45
expecting you to win the World Cup
02:38:48
they're expecting you to win the Asian
02:38:50
Cup this is on the field now off the
02:38:54
field they're expecting you as Leaders
02:38:57
to stabilize your Federation to keep
02:38:59
your clubs happy to keep your uh uh to
02:39:02
keep your members happy to run a very
02:39:04
professional League now these are all
02:39:06
expectations as a leader now if you
02:39:08
cannot achieve this it's very difficult
02:39:10
for you to come into that positions it
02:39:12
comes with the job these expectations
02:39:15
but more than that in a country that is
02:39:18
passionate about football or a country
02:39:20
that is not passionate about football
02:39:22
the others outside there the media the
02:39:25
the young boy on the street or or all
02:39:28
the others looking at you are looking
02:39:30
for an inspiring leader are you able to
02:39:35
inspire
02:39:37
everyone to achieve the vision that's
02:39:39
all I think a leader has to inspire the
02:39:43
whole
02:39:44
nation a football president has to
02:39:48
inspire the whole nation because I
02:39:51
always tell this to some of my friends
02:39:54
the president of the Football
02:39:56
Association will always get the back
02:39:58
page the Prime Minister gets the front
02:40:00
page of the president of the country
02:40:03
don't forget you get the back pitch
02:40:05
because Sports is always at the back and
02:40:07
that's the big responsibility so you can
02:40:09
use the back page of your media that is
02:40:13
so passionate about football to inspire
02:40:15
are the others football associations to
02:40:18
be must be model associations in the
02:40:20
country everybody looking at the
02:40:22
football association must say I want my
02:40:25
Association to be like the Football
02:40:27
Association the the the the the badmon
02:40:30
association must say I want the building
02:40:32
like the Football Association I want to
02:40:35
do programs like the Football
02:40:36
Association I want to be the leader as
02:40:38
the president of the Football
02:40:40
Association that is what you must expect
02:40:43
to do because it's a big game football
02:40:46
is a big game and you have the
02:40:48
opportunity to be the leader in your own
02:40:51
country people all must look at you and
02:40:53
say I want to be like the president of
02:40:56
the Football Association of so and so I
02:40:58
want to be the General Secretary of the
02:41:00
this Association because I think what
02:41:03
they are doing is right they are taking
02:41:05
football to the next level so I also I
02:41:08
want to learn from them if you have done
02:41:10
that then you have started the ball
02:41:12
rolling in the area of
02:41:14
inspiration yeah thank you thank you
02:41:17
very much and we have one more last
02:41:21
question we have one more last question
02:41:26
oh sorry about that uh I'm Joe Tam from
02:41:30
Hong Kong fa so um well I think um you
02:41:35
don't need to worry about uh in the
02:41:37
future having Mr mon
02:41:39
gani speak in front of you because your
02:41:42
topic on leadership by uh examp example
02:41:45
and also institutional approach is very
02:41:48
inspiring simple and spoton so my my
02:41:52
question for you is really um as a
02:41:55
practitioner about your own philosophy
02:41:57
how would if I asked you to assess your
02:42:00
successfulness on implementing your idea
02:42:03
on this two uh you know philosophy and
02:42:06
the second question is um any uh
02:42:08
learning that you would like to uh share
02:42:10
with us as a ma on the ma level what we
02:42:14
can do better if we
02:42:16
follow you on the current
02:42:18
implementation thank you good question I
02:42:20
think success can only be judged
02:42:24
by all of you whether AFC is successful
02:42:28
whether uh my team is doing a good job
02:42:32
this is from you the evaluation has to
02:42:35
come from you but if you ask me at least
02:42:38
we have put the best effort to go in the
02:42:40
right direction that's all we can do we
02:42:42
are doing our best we are putting our
02:42:45
best Foot In Front we're doing all that
02:42:47
we can to make sure that we achieve our
02:42:50
vision whether we are making big steps
02:42:52
small steps you will be the beneficiary
02:42:55
at the end of the day and only you can
02:42:57
assess how much of what we are doing is
02:43:00
benefiting you or not this is something
02:43:03
that you need to to to ask our our our
02:43:06
members here and uh your second question
02:43:11
is about learning
02:43:13
for learning
02:43:17
learning I like I said Asia is so
02:43:20
Diversified there is so many experts in
02:43:22
this region from top level member
02:43:24
associations to medium level you can
02:43:27
learn from each other we are there to
02:43:29
help you but like as I said what areas
02:43:32
do you want to learn that's very
02:43:34
important if you want to learn about how
02:43:36
to run a local League then you should
02:43:39
look at a member Association who has a
02:43:40
strong local League we are here to help
02:43:43
you pre the make that connection as well
02:43:46
but there are some things that we do
02:43:48
very well for example we establish the
02:43:50
coaching convention we want to make sure
02:43:53
that we have a high level of uh coach
02:43:56
education so we do that from the AFC
02:43:58
side you can learn from us but there's a
02:44:01
lot of learning that you can do from
02:44:04
each other because there's a lot of
02:44:07
expertise in our presidents in our
02:44:10
general secretaries in Our member
02:44:12
associations because each member
02:44:14
Association is so different and they
02:44:16
have so much to offer that you can learn
02:44:19
so much from them as well as from the
02:44:22
AFC so I would encourage you that if you
02:44:25
are looking at a certain subject can
02:44:27
always talk to us and say who can we
02:44:28
approach for this we can say okay send
02:44:31
your team to this Association because
02:44:33
they would be able to help you more and
02:44:35
don't forget your needs are nearly the
02:44:38
same your needs are nearly the same you
02:44:39
all want to do well in competitions you
02:44:41
all want to win the next match you all
02:44:44
want to qualify for Asian cup you want
02:44:46
to qualify for the World Cup that that
02:44:49
dream is always there you know and part
02:44:52
of it is from us and a lot of it is also
02:44:56
from each other and that's why we
02:44:58
organizing this event not only to give
02:45:00
you information but also to give you the
02:45:02
opportunity that you can learn from one
02:45:05
another thank you very much thank you
02:45:08
very much thater John for valuable
02:45:10
insights on shaping and inspiring
02:45:13
leadership culture and thank you than
02:45:15
you indeed for the great
02:45:17
[Music]

without further Ado we're glad to
03:02:21

03:02:24
football federation's vice president
03:02:27
miss Bayan will present on power of
03:02:30
football as a catalyst for a national
03:02:32
transformation please join me in
03:02:34
welcoming Miss
03:02:39
Bayan um my mic is working well right
03:02:42
all right so uh good afternoon ladies
03:02:44
and gentlemen first of all allow me to
03:02:46
thank the AFC for this kind invitation I
03:02:49
am truly honored and grateful to be here
03:02:52
um between the leaders of football in
03:02:54
Asia
03:02:56
so to start um I'm going to reintroduce
03:03:00
myself for those who don't know me my
03:03:02
name is lamia Bayan and I am the vice
03:03:04
president of the Saudi Arabian Football
03:03:07
Federation now allow me to start this
03:03:09
presentation by this powerful
03:03:11
inspirational quote from our crown prin
03:03:13
Muhammad bin Salman when he say sport
03:03:17
has the power to change lives within the
03:03:19
kingdom our Visionary leader truly
03:03:21
believes in the power of sport and the
03:03:24
impact it can have on our society it is
03:03:27
a true powerful vehicle to lead through
03:03:30
a trans a social
03:03:32
transformation through a vision a vision
03:03:35
that is very ambitious uh and it's
03:03:38
impacting the country as a whole
03:03:39
including Sports a 360 ambition to
03:03:43
enhance the the lives of Saudis from a
03:03:45
vibrant Society to economic growth but
03:03:48
what's important about this V vision is
03:03:50
it is focusing on Sports it is very
03:03:53
committed to increase the participation
03:03:55
of sports and enhancing and encouraging
03:03:58
a healthy
03:03:59
lifestyle for the Saudis Under the
03:04:01
Umbrella of Quality of Life program now
03:04:06
proudly we have becoming the fastest
03:04:08
growing nation in the world of sports
03:04:11
and we thank football for that and no
03:04:15
wonder because we are a football nation
03:04:18
if you go to the streets in Saudi and
03:04:20
you ask anyone on the streets what's
03:04:22
your favorite sport man or a woman girl
03:04:25
or a boy they will tell you football in
03:04:28
Sai we don't consider football to be
03:04:30
part of our lives but we consider it to
03:04:33
be part of our DNA and what helps also
03:04:36
that we are a very young population 70%
03:04:40
is the below the age of 35 so with that
03:04:43
young population this is how much
03:04:45
important sport is and how we can use it
03:04:48
for a social
03:04:52
transformation now let's talk numbers
03:04:55
with the unlimited
03:04:57
support and in light of the vision we
03:05:00
are witnessing a social transformation
03:05:02
when it comes to women's recent
03:05:03
participation in
03:05:05
sports labor participation rate was 25%
03:05:09
in 2019 and now it is stands at 40%
03:05:14
and what's important in this slide
03:05:16
females in managerial roles women in
03:05:19
leadership position it was 9% 2019 and
03:05:24
now it is up to
03:05:26
20% so this shows that Saudi is working
03:05:30
towards an inclusive a diverse Society
03:05:33
where it can harness the talent of all
03:05:36
of their
03:05:39
Citizen and we are advancing at every
03:05:42
level the the empowerment has reflected
03:05:44
positively on women's representation in
03:05:47
the regional and Global stage hundreds
03:05:49
of medals are being won by Saudi Sports
03:05:52
women we have now more than 37 female
03:05:55
national teams while in 2015 we had none
03:06:00
female sports participation went up
03:06:07
150% so I just want to add to this slide
03:06:10
that we are very proud of our football
03:06:12
national women National team because
03:06:14
they have added to these contribution
03:06:16
and to those medals and
03:06:19
numbers going on
03:06:22
next so that's only faces but I'm going
03:06:26
to introduce you to these powerful
03:06:28
women with this empowerment that we are
03:06:30
having numbers of leaders and role
03:06:33
models are emerging through several
03:06:34
Sports in Saudi Arabia when you look at
03:06:37
these powerful women each and every one
03:06:40
of them has a story an inspiring story
03:06:42
to tell each and every one of them made
03:06:44
an impact on
03:06:46
society and let me assure you that
03:06:49
leaders and Role Models play a crucial
03:06:52
role in defining the behavior the values
03:06:55
the aspiration of the current generation
03:06:58
and for the Next
03:07:00
Generation their actions and values are
03:07:03
serving as an inspiration demonstrating
03:07:06
the importance of leadership
03:07:08
sportsmanship and using one's platform
03:07:11
for a positive change now I'm going to
03:07:14
introduce you to a couple of these women
03:07:16
because they all share one thing they
03:07:19
have football background they were
03:07:21
ex-footballers we have alw arifi who you
03:07:24
might know is the assistant of the
03:07:25
minister of sports she was a
03:07:28
footballer we have rash Alam she is the
03:07:30
vice president of the boxing Federation
03:07:33
she was a
03:07:34
footballer Alia Rashid head of woman's
03:07:37
football in the Federation obviously a
03:07:39
footballer and myself also an ex
03:07:42
footballer so this shows that through
03:07:44
football you don't only educate and
03:07:46
Empower through football you can build
03:07:53
leaders now we strongly believe that
03:07:55
football is a powerful tool to enhance
03:07:58
lives and to help the youngster not only
03:08:01
to maintain a physical and fit lifestyle
03:08:04
but for them to to have a good mental
03:08:07
health and to give them that that outlet
03:08:10
for that massive energy that they have
03:08:13
to build the team skills and much more
03:08:16
so football is just beyond putting on a
03:08:18
jersey and showing up to practice it is
03:08:21
truly bigger than a 90-minute match
03:08:23
football will make you a better person
03:08:26
and a better person will contribute to a
03:08:28
better
03:08:30
society as we always say
03:08:32
football we educate and we
03:08:35
Empower now football provides a platform
03:08:38
for individuals to interact to build
03:08:42
friendships to develop a sense of
03:08:44
belonging football can break down
03:08:46
barriers of course no doubt as it will
03:08:50
promote understanding respect and
03:08:54
tolerance among different cultures and
03:08:58
communities so in Saudi we are focusing
03:09:01
on football as a vehicle for a national
03:09:04
transformation on a side note I'm just
03:09:07
going to tell you a a secret give girls
03:09:10
a football feed let them play
03:09:13
and watch them grow to become your next
03:09:15
board member your next president vice
03:09:18
president general secretary or any
03:09:20
managerial
03:09:23
role now one of my favorite slides is
03:09:26
the a journey of first it's the beauty
03:09:29
of the beginnings embracing New
03:09:31
Opportunities and the sense of hope and
03:09:34
potential that comes with the beginning
03:09:37
a chance for us to learn to grow and to
03:09:40
explore New
03:09:41
Horizons and the joy to celebrate each
03:09:45
and every step of the way now I'm sure
03:09:47
in this room the majority relates for
03:09:50
the Journey of the first because you
03:09:52
know that beautiful feeling when if you
03:09:54
are a player and you scored the first
03:09:55
goal with your national team the first
03:09:58
time you won the first award the first
03:10:01
time you were elected as a president or
03:10:03
a vice president or a general secretary
03:10:05
so it's the beauty of the
03:10:07
first in Saudi Arabia we are now walking
03:10:11
in a journey of first
03:10:13
the first national team the first win
03:10:16
the first League the first coach the
03:10:18
first referee and you can go on to the
03:10:21
slide and stay for 10 minutes to see the
03:10:23
Journey of
03:10:25
first we are creating history and we are
03:10:29
knocking down barriers and we are Paving
03:10:31
the way towards a new era of women's
03:10:33
football now what's important here is
03:10:36
celebrating those journey of first not
03:10:39
only in Saudi Arabia but throughout the
03:10:41
whole football community
03:10:43
because through celebration we raise
03:10:45
awareness we promote equality and it's a
03:10:48
great platform for women to Showcase
03:10:50
their talents on the global
03:10:57
stage now again with the numbers and
03:11:00
percentages we have launched our
03:11:03
strategy and we have made women's
03:11:04
football a main pillar in that strategy
03:11:07
and with the great support from our
03:11:09
leadership and under the 2030 Vision
03:11:12
women's football is going through a
03:11:13
massive massive growth since we dided
03:11:17
since we established a dedicated
03:11:19
Department in
03:11:20
2019 so all of these numbers you can see
03:11:23
this is from 2021 till
03:11:25
2023 now there is a star beside the
03:11:28
players number because our league is
03:11:30
still the registration is still open uh
03:11:33
and we are expecting more and more
03:11:35
players to join the League as for the
03:11:37
clubs we were 16 in 2021 while we are
03:11:41
now with 30 8 clubs registered under the
03:11:44
Federation and my favorite one is the
03:11:47
players in schools the first edition we
03:11:49
had 48,000 players girls playing in
03:11:53
school and it is not official yet but
03:11:55
the second
03:11:56
season we are nearly having
03:12:00
70,000 girls playing in school
03:12:02
registered to play in school so this is
03:12:04
a 40%
03:12:08
growth now it's a beautiful Journey I'm
03:12:11
pretty sure it is
03:12:13
a very well-designed slide very clean
03:12:16
and neat very simple and it's a very
03:12:18
beautiful way to show off that journey
03:12:20
of growth and how beautiful it is but
03:12:23
but this journey wasn't easy and this
03:12:26
journey didn't happen overnight and it
03:12:28
didn't happen by coincidence Behind
03:12:31
These numbers are hundreds of sleepless
03:12:33
nights thousands of meetings discussions
03:12:36
to put strategies and then to amend
03:12:38
strategies to put strategies again to
03:12:41
evaluate the current situation
03:12:43
a journey of first is never easy we have
03:12:46
faced so many obstacles and we have
03:12:48
faced so much challenges uncertainty but
03:12:53
we stepped out of our comfort zone and
03:12:56
we took calculated risks and we made
03:12:58
difficult decisions but it's okay
03:13:01
because we're still learning we're still
03:13:03
growing and with the amount of passion
03:13:05
that we have for this beautiful game the
03:13:08
Journey of growth will continue and let
03:13:11
me assure you this is just the
03:13:16
beginning now talking about
03:13:19
leaders so great things cannot be
03:13:23
achieved through passion and dedication
03:13:26
alone passion will keep you moving
03:13:29
passion is the thing that Fire Within
03:13:31
you every time you wake up in the
03:13:33
morning and you say yes I want to go
03:13:35
there and pursue my dream this is
03:13:37
passion
03:13:40
and let me assure you that the
03:13:42
dedication also ensures consistency but
03:13:44
this is not enough in a journey of
03:13:47
success in a journey of first in a
03:13:49
journey that is very long full of
03:13:52
challenges you will have to have a
03:13:54
support system you have to have access
03:13:57
to mentors to leaders role models it is
03:14:00
a
03:14:02
must without the support of these
03:14:04
leaders Prince abdulaziz the minister of
03:14:06
sport and our president Mr Yas Al and
03:14:10
our GS Ibrahim
03:14:13
these numbers these achievements would
03:14:15
have just stayed as
03:14:17
dreams they are inspiring us every day
03:14:21
and they are actually pushing us to
03:14:24
dream and encourage us to dream and once
03:14:26
we dream and put a plan they come to us
03:14:29
and say we dare you to dream bigger and
03:14:32
they don't only say it they prove it
03:14:34
they work with us they Mentor us and
03:14:36
they guide us and whenever we are in
03:14:39
doubt they are always there for us and
03:14:42
this is true leadership so from a
03:14:45
personal perspective as a leader as a a
03:14:48
role model I know I have a sense of
03:14:50
responsibility that a lot of people are
03:14:52
looking up to me and they consider me as
03:14:55
a leader and a role model but I am also
03:14:58
a human and I have my days where I feel
03:15:01
down where I lack some energy where I
03:15:04
feel uncertain and this is why it's
03:15:06
important to have those Leaders with you
03:15:09
to surround yourself with people who
03:15:11
will refuel you with the passion will
03:15:13
guide you through a through the way
03:15:15
because me myself L as a leader
03:15:18
inspiring a generation I can do it on my
03:15:20
own I need access to mentors and leaders
03:15:23
and these men are the best example of
03:15:29
leadership now my presentation is a
03:15:31
little bit short but I hope it's sending
03:15:33
a good message and I want to conclude by
03:15:35
saying this we are a room full of
03:15:38
leaders and we are the leaders of today
03:15:41
but what about find ing the leaders of
03:15:43
tomorrow in the Saudi Arabian Football
03:15:45
Federation we are positive 100% that the
03:15:49
leaders of Tomorrow are right now
03:15:50
playing football in schools are right
03:15:53
now putting on a Jersey to go to
03:15:55
practice and right now putting the
03:15:57
captain badge and ready to sing the
03:15:59
national anthem through football you
03:16:01
build leaders and football can help
03:16:03
shape those individuals and through
03:16:06
those leaders it's the only way that you
03:16:08
can ensure a national transformation in
03:16:11
your country I'll leave this
03:16:13
presentation and I'll conclude with a
03:16:16
question to you I know it's the other
03:16:18
way around but I'm going to ask you this
03:16:20
question where are you looking for your
03:16:22
next leaders of
03:16:24
tomorrow and thank you thank you very
03:16:28
much Miss Bayan for this inspiring and
03:16:31
insightful presentation now we would
03:16:34
like to open the floor for any
03:16:40
questions any question question from the
03:16:43
floor
03:16:48
please alaykum and thank you for that
03:16:50
wonderful presentation I'm a big fan of
03:16:53
uh the reform plans in Saudi Arabia
03:16:56
especially as they relate to educational
03:16:57
reforms and you know introducing New
03:17:00
National curriculum um uh altering the
03:17:03
teaching styles from kind of a top
03:17:05
bottom to a more student centered what
03:17:07
are the plans of integrating the
03:17:10
educational reforms with the football
03:17:12
operations in order to help establish
03:17:15
these Future Leaders who are currently
03:17:17
both on the field I believe and in the
03:17:19
schools in Saudi Arabia well thank you
03:17:22
for that question I hope I'm going to
03:17:24
answer the like the um the right part so
03:17:27
I think uh when we say education through
03:17:29
football it's also important that the
03:17:32
Federation collaborates with other
03:17:33
entities like the Ministry of Education
03:17:35
the ministry of sports because they are
03:17:37
they play a crucial role in finding
03:17:39
those leaders in football and through
03:17:42
football when you have to identify as a
03:17:44
federation who are the individual who
03:17:46
hold um the characteristics of the
03:17:49
leadership who has the skills and then
03:17:51
you have to take them and build on that
03:17:55
uh skills that they have so I think
03:17:57
empowering them educating them putting a
03:17:59
program for them to help them become the
03:18:01
leaders they are and most importantly as
03:18:03
I said access to mentors and Leadership
03:18:06
and just give them the space to be who
03:18:09
they want to be and to grow and don't
03:18:12
put a frame on
03:18:14
them I hope I answered the
03:18:17
question thank you very much are there
03:18:19
any questions from the
03:18:23
floor thank you Miss lamia Bayan I would
03:18:26
like to request you to remain on the
03:18:28
stage and invite the AFC vice president

04:43:55
ladies and gentlemen welcome back to the
04:43:58
second part of today's session we would
04:44:01
like to invite our next speaker Mr Mark
04:44:05
Milton founder and director at education
04:44:08
for peace let us welcome Mark Milton to
04:44:11
deliver his presentation on shaping the
04:44:14
future of leadership the power of
04:44:16
listening and
04:44:28
presence good
04:44:30
afternoon it's uh saying that it's a
04:44:33
pleasure to be here here would be very
04:44:35
little word it's an honor to to be with
04:44:39
all of you and to have this
04:44:41
opportunity to share with you about
04:44:43
listening I think that what we heard
04:44:46
this morning couldn't be for me a better
04:44:50
opening to tell you why listening is
04:44:53
important so I think I've saved 10
04:44:54
minutes in my talk because I don't have
04:44:57
to tell you why listening is importance
04:44:59
uh all our guests this morning were so
04:45:02
uh eloquent about this
04:45:05
so talking just after lunch isn't the
04:45:09
easiest
04:45:10
right and um of course we are all had a
04:45:15
good lunch and we're digesting and uh
04:45:18
and I found it interesting that I'm
04:45:20
speaking just after
04:45:21
lunch because this uh session is about
04:45:26
listening and
04:45:27
presence and actually I'm wondering what
04:45:31
is your level of presence now
04:45:35
because I know for me and I think it's
04:45:37
for all of once we've had lunch
04:45:39
depending you know how much lunch we've
04:45:41
had or how we're feeling our presence
04:45:43
can be more or less uh focused up there
04:45:48
and uh what's interesting is to know
04:45:50
that actually the quality of our
04:45:53
presence the way we can observe how
04:45:56
present we are is to sense how available
04:46:02
we are to listen to others
04:46:05
but not to those we agree
04:46:07
with how available are we to listen to
04:46:10
those we don't agree with those who have
04:46:12
other
04:46:13
opinions so it's a great way for us to
04:46:17
uh as leaders for you to see well you
04:46:21
how how anchored am I my presence right
04:46:24
now and the barometer I invite you to
04:46:26
have a look is how available am I right
04:46:29
now to go and listen to somebody I don't
04:46:31
agree
04:46:32
with so so shaping the
04:46:37
future uh of
04:46:39
leadership why shaping the future of
04:46:41
leadership because you actually by being
04:46:45
here and having this conference are
04:46:47
shaping the future of leadership I must
04:46:50
say I'm I'm really actually touched and
04:46:53
inspired by why what I heard this
04:46:55
morning hearing at this level of
04:46:58
leadership talking about such values
04:47:01
about of course integrity but also about
04:47:05
our number one focus is our
04:47:09
team these are such powerful messages
04:47:12
for for leaders and I think for tomorrow
04:47:15
leaders as it was said also by
04:47:19
several our capacity to listen as a
04:47:23
leader is actually going to be a number
04:47:26
one skill in the future of leadership
04:47:29
and the great news is that we can learn
04:47:32
how to listen
04:47:34
and we don't need to be a
04:47:37
psychologist I've been doing this work
04:47:39
for 30 years and I'll tell you a bit
04:47:41
Afters about it but I can tell you that
04:47:44
even 10 years ago talking about
04:47:47
listening as a
04:47:49
leader was like this is the world of
04:47:51
psychology I'm not a psychologist I
04:47:54
worked a lot with coaches even Sports
04:47:57
coaches 10 years ago 15 years ago would
04:48:00
say but this is this is not our job
04:48:03
we're here to coach to motivate to have
04:48:05
people go forward but actually this
04:48:08
topic we are talking about is about
04:48:10
communication skills and as human beings
04:48:13
as high level leaders like you are
04:48:16
enhancing our communication
04:48:19
skills is important and I love the fact
04:48:22
that this morning several messages were
04:48:24
given
04:48:25
saying we have to improve constantly we
04:48:28
can learn constantly and that's true
04:48:31
also about us our our skills so this is
04:48:36
what we're going to be I'm going to be
04:48:38
talking to you about but I'm not just
04:48:41
going to be talking it would be quite
04:48:43
paradoxical that I just talk to you
04:48:45
about listening right so I'm going to
04:48:48
also listen to you so you're going to
04:48:49
have an opportunity to talk but actually
04:48:51
I'm going to also invite you to talk
04:48:56
together and um I want to first put a
04:49:00
setting to give you some in Insight some
04:49:04
put and give you a few hints of how we
04:49:08
can learn differently especially in
04:49:11
challenging
04:49:14
situations so
04:49:17
um the power of listening and presence
04:49:21
um I was thinking you know when I Was
04:49:23
preparing this uh moment together that
04:49:27
actually there are
04:49:29
different levels of um leadership
04:49:34
of course what we're hearing and you may
04:49:37
have heard in this morning there's
04:49:39
there's different levels one of course
04:49:41
is leadership how we are
04:49:43
interacting with the people who we work
04:49:46
with and are we listening to them are we
04:49:49
present do they have space to change to
04:49:51
share their point of
04:49:53
views there's also another level um
04:49:56
which I will talk about a little bit
04:49:58
later which is about as a high level
04:50:02
leader you are also also listening to
04:50:04
your
04:50:06
ecosystem you're working in an ecosystem
04:50:10
and the fascinating thing I want to
04:50:12
share with you today is I want you to
04:50:15
experience that when we are able to
04:50:18
really genuinely listen to somebody and
04:50:21
again especially somebody with who we
04:50:23
disagree with we develop a skill a way
04:50:27
of being which actually
04:50:30
enhances our way of listening to the
04:50:35
ecosystem so it's
04:50:38
interdependent and I hope that what I'm
04:50:40
going to share with you now will give
04:50:43
Clarity because I can understand just
04:50:44
saying this you may understand it
04:50:47
intellectually but I would like you to
04:50:48
get a sense of
04:50:51
it so while preparing
04:50:56
um I was thinking there's another
04:50:58
there's another level of leadership as
04:51:00
well which you are all concerned about
04:51:04
and that's football's leadership in the
04:51:08
world I personally believe that football
04:51:11
has a major
04:51:13
responsibility in the world and I think
04:51:16
what was shared this morning made it
04:51:18
clear of how you are role
04:51:22
models and Role Models not just in
04:51:25
football but all the other
04:51:27
sports I also believe politics which
04:51:30
politics which parties politic
04:51:34
can talk about values like we're talking
04:51:37
about can talk about um Integrity can
04:51:42
talk about caring for
04:51:44
others so I believe that football has a
04:51:49
a major role and while preparing again I
04:51:51
was thinking which are the leaders which
04:51:56
I remember of who are not with us
04:51:57
anymore and I thought in my frame of
04:52:00
reference in my world I was thinking of
04:52:03
people like Gandhi people like Martin
04:52:06
Luther King Mother Teresa Mandela and I
04:52:10
think why do we remember of
04:52:12
them and I think that we remember them
04:52:15
because they were powerful
04:52:18
leaders but they were also compassionate
04:52:22
people they could listen really well to
04:52:25
others and again they were not just good
04:52:28
listeners to those of their party or
04:52:30
they're working with they could show
04:52:33
respectful listening to those with who
04:52:35
they
04:52:37
disagreed and this is a skill and today
04:52:40
what we're going to do together I hope
04:52:42
you end this moment together where
04:52:44
you're going to feel that you have
04:52:47
maybe some insight of how next time
04:52:51
because you know that there's going to
04:52:52
be a next time you speak with something
04:52:54
challenging that you maybe have some
04:52:56
more
04:52:58
um tools for you to be able to deal with
04:53:02
such situations
04:53:04
so
04:53:05
here's somebody I thought of who you
04:53:07
probably recognize and I want to read
04:53:10
with you what he said because I think
04:53:15
and you probably have all heard this but
04:53:17
I want to just read it just to remember
04:53:19
this together before we start he said
04:53:22
that sport has the power to change the
04:53:26
world it has the power to
04:53:29
inspire it has the power to unite people
04:53:32
in ways that let little else does it
04:53:36
speaks to youth in a language they
04:53:38
understand and Sport can create hope
04:53:41
where once there was only
04:53:44
despair it is more powerful than
04:53:46
governments in breaking down racial
04:53:49
barriers it laughs in the face of all
04:53:53
types of
04:53:54
discrimination and this is I find so
04:53:56
powerful because he didn't just say it I
04:53:59
guess you all know bendel's story and
04:54:01
what he did especially in 19 5 with the
04:54:04
Rugby World Cup and how he
04:54:08
United his country the black and the
04:54:11
white in the way that nobody would have
04:54:13
imagined that possible and that
04:54:16
shows the power of sports and for me
04:54:21
football has a leadership role in sports
04:54:24
so carries that potential and that
04:54:30
responsibility so I'm not telling you
04:54:32
this to please you I actually changed my
04:54:36
life 15 years
04:54:38
ago I was running a successful
04:54:42
consultant firm
04:54:45
and I had a connection with the UFA in
04:54:49
Europe in Switzerland and a door opened
04:54:52
to do a program to diminish violence in
04:54:55
football and I started with them a
04:54:58
program called master of your emotions
04:55:01
so this topic I'm talking with you today
04:55:04
started 15 years ago which makes it very
04:55:08
moving and inspiring for me to be
04:55:11
talking with you today about this I want
04:55:15
to say just a couple of things about
04:55:19
Mandela I think he's also an amazing uh
04:55:22
example of this topic because when he
04:55:26
entered prison he was an angry man he he
04:55:29
could even be quite
04:55:31
violent and he came out 27 years
04:55:35
later as a pacified
04:55:38
leader and I imagine many of you have
04:55:41
seen the film Invictus which I highly
04:55:44
recommend which is just amazing you can
04:55:47
see how well actually it's not in the
04:55:50
film Invictus that you see this uh it's
04:55:53
in the part I'm going to say afterwards
04:55:54
but he really learned how to connect
04:56:00
with his
04:56:02
opponents and he those who put him in
04:56:05
jail the
04:56:07
africanas uh he he knew the name of all
04:56:10
his cell Keepers he knew the name of
04:56:13
their family members he read their
04:56:16
literature he um read the the poems in
04:56:21
victus and I think this is a great
04:56:24
example of how we can pacify our self
04:56:30
inside and that actually peace starts
04:56:33
inside we can't offer more peace outside
04:56:37
than we're offering to
04:56:39
ourself and that's the same as a
04:56:41
federation as
04:56:42
well the other thing is that when he
04:56:44
became president of South
04:56:47
Africa and this is clear in the film
04:56:51
Invictus he actually brought those
04:56:54
qualities those human qualities of being
04:56:57
able to be genuinely interested in
04:57:00
somebody
04:57:01
else into his governor
04:57:04
if you look at the way the relationship
04:57:06
he had with the rugby national football
04:57:09
team with the the captain with he didn't
04:57:14
meet very often but the recognition he
04:57:17
gave by showing his presence by being
04:57:20
there allowed them to go what was
04:57:23
completely
04:57:24
expected they were not planned to go
04:57:26
beyond the quarterfinals and they won
04:57:29
against New
04:57:32
Zealand but but also the
04:57:36
fact that he could see that this world
04:57:40
cup was going to be the opportunity to
04:57:43
unite his
04:57:45
country was a capacity to read the
04:57:49
ecosystem to listen to the
04:57:53
ecosystem and I believe what I said at
04:57:56
the beginning the more compassion we
04:57:59
give and listening and caring to people
04:58:02
around us
04:58:03
the more as a leader we develop our
04:58:06
capacity to listen and see this
04:58:08
ecosystem so you know it's a virtuous
04:58:13
circle
04:58:16
so I'm going to share with you um so
04:58:20
we're gon to I said I'm going to ask you
04:58:22
afterwards to to sit next to somebody
04:58:24
and uh you can be able to listen to
04:58:26
somebody I'm going to go give you some
04:58:27
insight but before that I would like to
04:58:30
share a few things with you and and I
04:58:33
will um I want to tell
04:58:37
you a few words about where I come from
04:58:41
mainly to share with you some uh
04:58:44
listening
04:58:46
experiences so 30 years ago I had the
04:58:50
amazing
04:58:51
opportunity to become a volunteer
04:58:53
listener and a Suicide Prevention
04:58:55
Hotline so for one year I trained to
04:58:59
listen to people in distress you know
04:59:02
it's in practic every countries of the
04:59:04
world you have these free 247 hotlines
04:59:08
where you can call uh with
04:59:12
anonymous because that's where you can
04:59:14
really be yourself and there's over
04:59:17
100,000 Volunteers in the world doing
04:59:19
this for free it's an amazing
04:59:22
organization and I learned how to listen
04:59:26
to people in
04:59:28
distress but not only that I realized
04:59:31
that when I went home
04:59:33
with my wife my sons but my children my
04:59:38
it changed my way of being with people
04:59:40
it started to allow me to develop an
04:59:43
awareness of where am I when I'm
04:59:46
listening am I actually really with the
04:59:48
other person or am I maybe
04:59:51
more with my own ideas and thoughts you
04:59:55
know these times when we listen to
04:59:57
people and even though we're listening
04:59:58
to them we're already thinking about
05:00:00
what we're going to answer to them right
05:00:03
that happens to all of us and that's an
05:00:05
awareness we can develop because we
05:00:07
can't be always listening to
05:00:11
people but we can develop the awareness
05:00:13
of the quality of our presence and the
05:00:15
listening we're
05:00:16
offering so that really impacted my life
05:00:19
so much that actually two years later I
05:00:22
lost I left my I was in the business
05:00:24
environment and I left and I became
05:00:26
director in Switzerland of this Swiss
05:00:29
organization and I trained for 10 years
05:00:31
volunteers to listen listen from 18
05:00:35
years old to over 70 so I know everybody
05:00:38
can learn how to
05:00:40
listen and um I was very fortunate
05:00:46
um on the road sorry I'm going the wrong
05:00:49
way there's an intern well actually
05:00:52
there's three international federations
05:00:54
in the world who hold these uh
05:00:58
centers and uh I had I was very humbled
05:01:03
to become the president of the
05:01:05
International Federation of telephone
05:01:07
emergencies for 10
05:01:09
years and uh and this was you know over
05:01:13
20 years ago I was a young man and I
05:01:16
felt very honored and at the same time a
05:01:20
bit nervous to become president of a
05:01:22
federation like that and I want to share
05:01:24
with you a story of my first
05:01:28
meeting where I had 26 people around the
05:01:32
table representing 26 countries and I
05:01:36
started the meeting by just reminding a
05:01:37
bit of my presidential program that I
05:01:40
had to prepare to be
05:01:42
elected and starting the meeting I
05:01:44
reminded a few words of
05:01:46
that and I asked everybody to express
05:01:49
themselves I wanted to hear each
05:01:51
Federation what was their Vision what
05:01:53
was their aspiration their
05:01:54
needs and when they finished and it took
05:01:57
some time 26 is a lot of people but what
05:01:59
did I observe I observed that over half
05:02:03
of the people who Express
05:02:05
themselves they
05:02:07
actually you they actually refer to
05:02:11
things I had
05:02:13
said and that gave me a major Insight
05:02:16
which was as
05:02:19
president it's very important
05:02:22
sometimes to only say what we have to
05:02:24
say at the
05:02:26
end because obviously as a president you
05:02:29
have huge impact people listen to you
05:02:32
they are inspired by you and they want
05:02:34
to go in your direction if you want to
05:02:37
hear people in a very genuine
05:02:40
way let's let them first Express
05:02:43
themselves so they can say really what's
05:02:45
important for them and then give our
05:02:47
point of view of course sometimes we
05:02:49
have to give it
05:02:51
first but the other thing which inspired
05:02:54
me and it was mentioned this
05:02:56
morning it really brought me back to
05:03:00
what's my role and that gave gave me the
05:03:03
Insight I'm here to
05:03:05
serve I'm here to serve and that's why I
05:03:08
want to First listen to them and then
05:03:12
compose with
05:03:14
them
05:03:16
so that was a very insightful experience
05:03:20
and in 2002 I created this foundation
05:03:24
called education for peace which is a
05:03:26
non for-profit Swiss foundation with a
05:03:29
very easy aim and that was the Insight
05:03:31
of becoming a volunteer listen
05:03:33
my dream was that I think every children
05:03:36
in the world should be able to learn how
05:03:39
to listen when they're at school I
05:03:42
thought if I would have learned how to
05:03:43
listen when I was at school it would
05:03:45
have changed my relationship to
05:03:47
education and the beautiful thing is
05:03:49
that 20 years later today there are
05:03:53
millions of children in the world who
05:03:56
are learning about emotions listening
05:03:59
insights in schools so this topic we're
05:04:03
talking about is something that's
05:04:05
spreading in the world and the new
05:04:07
generations are learning about
05:04:10
it so as I mentioned uh so five years
05:04:14
later in
05:04:15
2007 we actually partnered with uh the
05:04:20
UEFA to create this program and left the
05:04:22
school environment to work in football
05:04:25
so since
05:04:26
2018 this work has been essentially in
05:04:30
the football
05:04:31
environment
05:04:33
together the two
05:04:35
organizations organized the very first
05:04:38
Forum on the theme of emotional health
05:04:42
in 2007 and the
05:04:45
UFA actually sponsored the event which
05:04:49
was really a fantastic step to go into
05:04:52
the field of
05:04:54
emotions and I'll just finish by
05:04:56
mentioning that at the same time which
05:05:00
was 12 years ago uh a we created a a
05:05:05
movement called Spirit of humanity in
05:05:07
Iceland where we bring leaders together
05:05:10
like you there's presidents there's
05:05:12
ministers CEOs to talk about values but
05:05:16
not just talk about values how do you
05:05:18
put them in practice what does it look
05:05:20
like what's the human impact and most of
05:05:23
all what's the TR personal
05:05:27
transformation because as it was said
05:05:29
this morning this can be uncomfortable
05:05:32
because it's going Beyond ourselves
05:05:35
learning about
05:05:37
ourselves
05:05:39
so here are a few uh insights I'd like
05:05:42
to give you before we enter this space
05:05:44
where I'm going to ask you to listen to
05:05:46
each
05:05:48
other why is listening so important for
05:05:52
a leader so as I said I probably
05:05:54
wouldn't have to answer this because of
05:05:56
this morning but I do want to give a few
05:05:59
uh insights
05:06:01
one get in attention and being heard is
05:06:05
probably one of the most important
05:06:07
things for a president for a general
05:06:09
secretary for all
05:06:11
managers being heard is your it's key
05:06:15
for you and the reality is we listen
05:06:20
better to good listeners in other words
05:06:24
if you by enhancing you're
05:06:28
listening you will be more listened to
05:06:30
and I just want to say something now
05:06:33
I'm not here as a guru telling you what
05:06:36
listening is about I've been teaching
05:06:38
listening for 30 years but I'm still
05:06:40
learning I'm still a learner and I'm
05:06:42
still learning every day so this is
05:06:44
something I'm sharing with you and I'm
05:06:46
sure there's lots of experience here
05:06:49
around listening the other thing is
05:06:53
that we need to know our
05:06:56
partners and our opponents what what
05:06:59
does a coach do with its players before
05:07:01
a big match
05:07:03
they want to know their opponents they
05:07:05
look at the matches they it's the same
05:07:08
we we need to know our opponents we need
05:07:11
to know and listening is the way we get
05:07:13
to know but the beautiful thing is that
05:07:16
we also
05:07:18
talk easier to good listeners so we
05:07:22
don't just listen better to good
05:07:24
listeners but we talk better to good
05:07:27
listeners and a little anecdote which I
05:07:29
think you may refer to because as
05:07:33
presidents and general
05:07:34
secretaries of course you have huge
05:07:37
impact and when you meet
05:07:40
people people are wondering you know how
05:07:44
can we how can I have bring what I have
05:07:47
to say how can I share because let's say
05:07:50
it for many people you're
05:07:52
impressive but you want people to be
05:07:55
genuine don't
05:07:57
you I had the fortune to work with zadin
05:08:01
zidan he actually was a big insight for
05:08:03
me in 2006 when he did his headbutt at
05:08:06
the World Cup because I thought this is
05:08:09
an amazing
05:08:11
opportunity to bring self-awareness into
05:08:14
football because if he can lose
05:08:17
it we can all lose it hopefully not with
05:08:20
by headbutt but just you know we have
05:08:23
poent we all have potential violence in
05:08:27
us and when I worked with zidan he told
05:08:30
me my problem is in to listen to my
05:08:33
players and that was 2015 he had the B
05:08:37
team of real madrids so there was like a
05:08:40
few weeks before he took the A Team he
05:08:42
said my problem isn't that I can't uh
05:08:46
listen to them is they they don't want
05:08:48
to talk to me they just want to listen
05:08:50
to
05:08:51
me this is maybe your time I'm sure
05:08:54
you're sometime in this situation where
05:08:56
people they just want to listen to you
05:08:58
so the work we did together was how can
05:09:01
you create a
05:09:03
connection with the other so that they
05:09:06
feel inspired and motivated to talk to
05:09:08
you how can you ask questions what
05:09:12
actually inspire the other to talk to
05:09:14
you and how can you answer in a way
05:09:18
where you want to continue
05:09:22
talking being
05:09:24
heard is one of the most important human
05:09:28
needs this question of listening and of
05:09:32
leadership and the positions you are I
05:09:33
think it's so important to remember that
05:09:36
everybody we
05:09:37
meet being heard is just it's one of the
05:09:41
most and this I know is
05:09:44
universal I know there's a lot of
05:09:46
cultures here and this topic can
05:09:50
be seen expressed from different ways
05:09:53
depending on culture but the need to be
05:09:56
heard is universal it's it's part of a
05:09:59
human being and you as General
05:10:02
secretaries and presidents you have a
05:10:05
huge power to allow people to feel
05:10:11
heard so learning to listen is the
05:10:14
foundation of a caring culture I think
05:10:16
everything that was talked about this
05:10:19
morning really showed how important it
05:10:22
is to become or to continue to be a
05:10:26
caring
05:10:28
leader the other thing is that I've
05:10:31
observed that old leaders who are good
05:10:33
listeners If You observe the people
05:10:35
around them and how they work and
05:10:38
teams this dialogue you can share your
05:10:41
opinions you can be have different point
05:10:43
of views leaders who don't listen what
05:10:47
happens you have teams who are more in
05:10:50
the energy of convincing talk who's
05:10:53
right and who's wrong and when we're in
05:10:56
that energy of who's right and who's
05:10:58
wrong that's not what is going to create
05:11:00
the team as it was mentioned this
05:11:03
morning so I'm happy that this morning
05:11:06
it was also talked about
05:11:09
self-awareness because what I've learned
05:11:11
is that actually we can't listen to
05:11:14
others better than we can listen to
05:11:17
ourselves so we are our
05:11:20
tools and we have to learn how to listen
05:11:23
to
05:11:25
ourselves and that's why this field we
05:11:28
we're talking about is about
05:11:30
self-awareness and and again I really
05:11:32
want to enhance this is not necessarily
05:11:35
about
05:11:36
psychology this is you know the the
05:11:39
field of self-awareness in the last 20
05:11:42
years has just
05:11:44
explode if you go into your any library
05:11:47
of your cities there are so many books
05:11:50
films movies about self-awareness and
05:11:54
that's that's the Journey of the future
05:11:56
As Leaders it's to every day get to
05:11:59
learn more about ourselves which
05:12:01
requires
05:12:02
which was also mentioned this morning to
05:12:05
not settle into our comfort
05:12:08
zone we can learn every day more about
05:12:11
ourselves about others and about life so
05:12:16
just a few words about listening
05:12:18
self-awareness self-awareness is the
05:12:20
beginning it's the Gateway actually
05:12:22
self-awareness is the entry door to
05:12:26
enhancing our listening and
05:12:28
presence and from self awareness we can
05:12:32
enter a space which is about relational
05:12:38
awareness in a nutshell relational
05:12:42
awareness is about becoming
05:12:45
aware of the impact of our behavior on
05:12:52
others and our Behavior has two
05:12:54
Dimensions there the outside Dimension
05:12:57
it's our words and our actions and is
05:13:00
this our inside Dimension our emotions
05:13:04
and our
05:13:06
thoughts all of our thoughts all of our
05:13:08
emotions all of our acts and all of our
05:13:11
words have impact on others but also on
05:13:16
ourselves and on our
05:13:18
environments
05:13:21
so it's really I believe it was has been
05:13:26
my journey a gift to enter this this
05:13:29
field of
05:13:30
self-awareness and if we enter there
