00:00:08
we both Lov water and so it was
00:00:10
important for us both to be close to
00:00:12
water but also close to Nature living on
00:00:15
a float home just seem like this amazing
00:00:18
way to have access to Nature and to be
00:00:21
so close to the city still because we
00:00:24
both work in the city and so that was
00:00:27
definitely something that we took into
00:00:29
consider
00:00:30
ation so we Built Well we started
00:00:34
building the house about 3 years ago so
00:00:37
we were actually living in a boat a
00:00:40
power kind of fishing tler and we loved
00:00:43
it we lived in a float home Community
00:00:46
but we would have been kicked out if
00:00:48
someone else had come in with a float
00:00:50
home so Tim had this great idea that we
00:00:54
should move onto a float house and Tim
00:00:58
and I started drawing out our floor
00:01:00
plans and had this Vision to just have
00:01:03
everything super open concept because
00:01:06
our philosophy is just lesses more and
00:01:09
we're very mindful of things that we
00:01:11
bring
00:01:12
in it was completely our own design mhm
00:01:16
we had someone build our base and our
00:01:18
exterior they were building it the shape
00:01:20
of a boat house which was a boat shed
00:01:24
and we just filled it in so that it
00:01:26
would be a float Home Instead and then
00:01:28
we could find trades people Tim's
00:01:31
actually a plumber by trade so we knew
00:01:34
that we could get enough people to help
00:01:35
us build a house once we had the shell
00:01:38
and it really just seemed like once we
00:01:41
made that decision to move onto a float
00:01:43
home everything just really flowed
00:01:46
together and next thing you knew we were
00:01:48
moved in and so we've been here for just
00:01:51
over 2
00:01:53
years living here it's like coming to a
00:01:57
vacation every single night
00:02:00
and then every day you go back to work
00:02:03
but it's literally perfect for me it
00:02:05
Blends the Comforts of home but also
00:02:09
like one of the things I loved on my
00:02:10
boat was feel like I was part of Nature
00:02:12
and be out in the wild and out feeling
00:02:15
the storms and all the rest of it and
00:02:16
even on a float home you do feel like if
00:02:18
it's stormy out or whatnot you do feel
00:02:20
the house moving and rocking and all of
00:02:22
that which is all stuff that you just
00:02:26
[Applause]
00:02:28
love
00:02:30
a float home is the same as a house on
00:02:33
land except it floats on the water when
00:02:36
it comes to the foundation there was a
00:02:39
few options I mean concrete is one of
00:02:42
the the best higher quality options but
00:02:45
it's also very pricy so we ended up
00:02:46
going with styrofoam which we encased in
00:02:50
pressure treated wood and that has a
00:02:53
lifespan of like upwards of 30 years
00:02:56
yeah cuz styrofoam is actually not
00:02:57
allowed to be used by itself it has to
00:02:59
be completely contained if you don't
00:03:02
have a good base there can be
00:03:04
infestations of rodents or beavers or
00:03:08
muskrats those sorts of things so you
00:03:10
just really want to make sure that your
00:03:12
home is really well enclosed and
00:03:14
ultimately that you have enough
00:03:16
flotation because weight really does
00:03:19
matter we definitely designed our home
00:03:22
over and above it's twice as much as
00:03:25
what it actually needs mhm our main
00:03:28
float size is is 20 ft by 40 ft which is
00:03:32
standard for most float homes that's
00:03:35
most marinas are made to accommodate a
00:03:38
20t x 40t house we've put a a deck on it
00:03:43
that is about it's 8 ft by 20 ft and
00:03:47
then on the back we have another deck
00:03:49
that just goes across the back the house
00:03:51
itself is only 30 ft long total we have
00:03:54
two floors which is 1,200 sare
00:03:56
[Music]
00:03:58
ft so so as you walk in it's super open
00:04:02
concept we've got the stairs that take
00:04:04
you upstairs and then this way is over
00:04:06
to the
00:04:08
kitchen so I wanted to have a space that
00:04:12
allowed me to feel a part of friends and
00:04:16
family when they're over when I'm
00:04:18
cooking I love cooking so we decided to
00:04:21
put an island here just to have
00:04:24
spaciousness for like preparing meals on
00:04:27
this side we've got our
00:04:30
um gas range stove top so we've got a
00:04:33
propane tank
00:04:35
outside and then over here is our living
00:04:38
room and this is actually one of my
00:04:41
favorite spaces we don't actually have a
00:04:44
ton of Windows in our home so I just
00:04:46
really wanted like a really big window
00:04:49
to allow in a ton of
00:04:52
light and then over here we have an
00:04:55
infrared sauna that we actually got off
00:04:58
an old neighbor who used to live on a
00:05:00
float home and then out here we've got
00:05:04
our patio door that just takes you out
00:05:08
and gives you the most amazing view of
00:05:12
the
00:05:13
river this is actually a fairly new
00:05:16
structure that Tim just built and we
00:05:19
wanted a space that we could stay really
00:05:21
cozy and dry under and it's actually
00:05:24
perfect because we got the Evening Sun
00:05:26
here and then if we want sun we can stay
00:05:29
on this side we've got a barbecue and
00:05:31
we've got all our little plants and it's
00:05:34
just really perfect like this view just
00:05:36
makes you want to be out here all the
00:05:37
time and that's really what we wanted
00:05:40
when we built
00:05:42
this so this is our bathroom this is our
00:05:46
standup shower it's got the two
00:05:48
different types of uh shower heads we
00:05:51
didn't use any concrete because it would
00:05:53
be a little bit too heavy but we decided
00:05:55
to go with this concrete overlay so we
00:05:58
took it all the way up in in the shower
00:06:00
and then we also have it on the floor
00:06:03
and this is our cast iron tub that I
00:06:06
found on Craigslist we ended up just
00:06:08
spray painting the legs matte black and
00:06:11
then we've got this vanity that we ended
00:06:14
up making out of old cedar wood from the
00:06:18
beach so this is our laundry room and
00:06:21
we've got our hot water tank as well
00:06:24
it's the perfect size for us and it's so
00:06:26
nice just to be able to do laundry at
00:06:27
home too we've got the stairs that take
00:06:30
you upstairs and then we've got a really
00:06:32
nice handle that we ended up getting
00:06:35
from the beach from some
00:06:37
Driftwood and then this is our
00:06:41
bedroom so it's really really minimal I
00:06:44
didn't want a ton of things um I don't
00:06:48
actually really work from home either
00:06:49
anymore so this desk is really just a
00:06:52
place that I have an option to work from
00:06:55
home and then we decided to put in these
00:06:58
drawers which which I really love
00:07:00
because everything's just hidden inside
00:07:04
but it gives us a bunch of extra space
00:07:07
and then when we have family or friends
00:07:10
staying over we've got an extra queen
00:07:12
bed over here and one of my favorite
00:07:15
things is actually this window because
00:07:18
it looks right out to the most beautiful
00:07:25
landscape when we were planning the
00:07:27
house we were humming and Hauling about
00:07:29
perhaps having a wood stove which I
00:07:32
think we definitely still want but
00:07:34
there's a few sort of challenges with
00:07:37
regards to house insurance but we did
00:07:40
splurge and we got um in for heating in
00:07:43
our bathroom um overall we heat the
00:07:46
house with about one
00:07:48
heater and we don't really need cooling
00:07:50
because on the river like the breeze you
00:07:53
just open a couple windows and and it's
00:07:56
totally nice and cool most Marina will
00:07:59
allow for either a 60 amp or 100 amp
00:08:02
electrical service um ours is 100 amp
00:08:06
here for the water uh same thing all
00:08:09
marinas will have their water hoses and
00:08:11
water connections and unfortunately
00:08:14
there are a lot of marinas that aren't
00:08:15
too careful with their sewage which is
00:08:18
not the best thing on the river but uh
00:08:21
ours is all connected and always has
00:08:23
been to the
00:08:25
street we definitely didn't have a huge
00:08:28
budget to do this but we had a little
00:08:30
bit of savings and so we just planned a
00:08:33
smaller footprint float home so the
00:08:37
float home Allin was about
00:08:40
$120,000 with the full build even
00:08:45
furniture that being said we saved so
00:08:48
much in the
00:08:50
trades um Tim did our plumbing Tim did
00:08:53
the electrical and then his brother did
00:08:57
a lot of the build build out of the
00:09:01
Interior Plumbing is a challenge in
00:09:04
winter and it just means you have to
00:09:06
leave your top on uh not only for your
00:09:09
water so your water doesn't freeze but
00:09:11
if there's a sewage pump system all of
00:09:14
that piping has to be actively being
00:09:16
used otherwise it'll freeze solid what
00:09:18
other challenges window washing if
00:09:21
you're only tied up on one side like we
00:09:24
were before then you have to wash your
00:09:26
windows by boat yeah not a lot of
00:09:29
challenges though I mean it's honestly
00:09:32
like living on a house but just floating
00:09:35
on water but when we come home this is
00:09:37
definitely where we rest and so that
00:09:40
we're always energized to you know go
00:09:42
into work we both own a company called
00:09:46
yogu we make a dairyfree coconut yogurt
00:09:49
that's something that we're really
00:09:51
passionate about and really just giving
00:09:53
a better tasty option to people that
00:09:56
can't have dairy I founded the company 5
00:09:59
years ago and you know working really
00:10:01
hard to build this
00:10:05
[Music]
00:10:08
startup we have insurance there's no
00:10:11
issues um you know it's a pretty basic
00:10:14
fee you have to get it surveyed it's
00:10:16
like a house inspector I guess and on a
00:10:19
float home we own the physical house but
00:10:23
we rent morage so basically the slip in
00:10:26
which your boat or your house goes in at
00:10:29
our last Marina we were paying $1,200 as
00:10:32
mortgage right here we pay
00:10:34
$1,500 we actually loved where we were
00:10:37
living but our landlord at our old float
00:10:40
home Marena he actually decided to
00:10:42
increase our Mortage over
00:10:44
35% and virtually gave us no notice I
00:10:48
mean living on living on a float home is
00:10:51
like the wild anything goes and so these
00:10:55
sorts of rent increases they can happen
00:10:57
with no notice so there is no real
00:11:00
security when it comes to morage and
00:11:03
there are not a ton of spaces available
00:11:06
but we've landed in this really great
00:11:09
community and it feels like there is a
00:11:11
lot of like stability here and so we
00:11:15
towed our house from where we were
00:11:17
living and now we're living here which
00:11:19
is super super
00:11:21
exciting I think that when you live on a
00:11:24
float home you want to exchange stories
00:11:27
you want to exchange challenges is and
00:11:29
what has helped you and what hasn't
00:11:31
worked and you know I think you just
00:11:33
learn a lot from that and we've learned
00:11:35
a ton throughout the

Description:

Jade and Tim decided to live on a float home because it was the perfect compromise between wanting to live close to nature and needing to live close to the city for work. Their home is a modern and minimalist black two-story home that sits on top of a floating foundation made with styrofoam encased in plywood. The home is 30' long x 20' wide, and the float is 40' long x 20' wide (the size of a standard float home slip). You can follow and find out more about Jade, Tim, and Yoggu Foods here: https://www.facebook.com/unsupportedbrowser https://yoggu.ca/ Their journey began 3 years ago while they were living together on a small trawler-style motorboat. Their moorage (marina rent) was at risk because any new float home arriving at the marina would have forced them out of their spot. So they hired a boat house (boat shed) builder to build a simple float home shell, and then they finished the interior with the help of friends and family (it helps that Tim is a plumber by trade). The result is a simple, peaceful, open-concept home that perfectly matches the peaceful river surroundings. But living on a float home isn't always easy and as the couple says in this video, it can be like the Wild West. Marinas don't have to follow the same rules as landlords on land, so there's little security when it comes to moorage, and there aren't many spaces available for float homes if they do need to find a new spot, like they did this year. Their original marina raised their moorage cost by 35% so they went looking for a new spot and were lucky to find one nearby. We hope you enjoy meeting this couple and checking out their floating home lifestyle!
