В 1979 году спектакль был восстановлен Владимиром Богомоловым и снят для телевидения ТО "Экран". Гениальный делец и мошенник Павел Иванович Чичиков ездит по России и покупает у помещиков почивших крепостных, но учтенных в качестве живых при последней ревизии. Делает он это, якобы, для того, чтобы вывезти крестьян в Херсонскую губернию, и начать там хозяйствовать. В дальнейшем Павел Иванович планировал заработать на этой авантюре неплохие деньги. Но... судьба играет только по своим правилам.
