00:00:00
- Pick up your phone and call the professionals,
00:00:02
Ghostbusters.
00:00:03
- [Narrator] Did you ever wonder why phone numbers
00:00:05
in TV shows and movies always start with the numbers 555?
00:00:09
- 555-1125.
00:00:11
- It's 555-3455.
00:00:13
- 555-2401.
00:00:16
- [Narrator] The short answer is that most 555 numbers
00:00:19
are not working numbers, so real people won't be harassed
00:00:22
if die-hard fans try to call them.
00:00:24
- 55 was an exchange combination
00:00:27
that was not used very often
00:00:30
in the American telephone system.
00:00:33
- You may get a wrong number or no number at all.
00:00:36
- [Narrator] An FCC contractor called the NANPA,
00:00:39
or North American Numbering Plan Administration,
00:00:43
is tasked with assigning numbers for use.
00:00:45
555-1212 is still used for Directory Assistance
00:00:50
and 555-4334 is reserved for Assigned National use.
00:00:55
But a set of one hundred 555 numbers
00:00:57
have been officially designated for use in Hollywood,
00:01:00
555-0100 through 555-0199.
00:01:06
- Cory Gillis, 555-0176.
00:01:11
- [Narrator] Back in the early 90s,
00:01:13
555 numbers outside that range could be reserved
00:01:16
for information service providers,
00:01:18
but this program was shut down by the NANPA in 2015.
00:01:22
While those other numbers might one day be put back
00:01:24
in circulation, the 100 reserved
00:01:27
for TV and movies will not,
00:01:29
so they will always be safe for use.
00:01:31
So, how specifically did 555 become the famous number
00:01:35
that it is today?
00:01:36
Decades ago, phone numbers used to look a lot different.
00:01:40
They consisted of a word and a five digit numerical code.
00:01:44
The word was a telephone exchange name
00:01:48
and the number was assigned to a specific phone
00:01:50
in that area.
00:01:51
- [Sheldon] Up until 1919, all telephone calls were manual.
00:01:56
You had to start by speaking to an operator.
00:01:59
- This is WY 5-2240.
00:02:03
- [Narrator] References to this system can be seen
00:02:04
in the names of movies, like BUtterfield 8.
00:02:09
And songs like the Glenn Miller Orchestra's,
00:02:10
Pennsylvania 6-5000, which calls hotel Pennsylvania
00:02:14
in New York.
00:02:15
- [Sheldon] These were based on names
00:02:17
that could be easily understood verbally.
00:02:21
- [Narrator] Eventually, phone companies switched
00:02:22
to a system where customers had to dial themselves.
00:02:25
- We are changing your telephone service over to dial.
00:02:29
Take up your receiver and always listen for the dial tone.
00:02:33
- [Narrator] Phone numbers were reached using numbers
00:02:35
corresponding to the first two letters of the exchange name.
00:02:38
So, if you wanted to call Pennsylvania 6-5000,
00:02:41
you would dial 73-6-5000.
00:02:44
Since seven corresponds with PQRS on the keypad,
00:02:48
and three corresponds to DEF.
00:02:50
For Butterfield, you would start with 28.
00:02:53
So, with this in mind, let's take another look at 555.
00:02:57
- [Sheldon] Now, some combinations for the first two letters
00:03:00
of a word worked better than others.
00:03:04
One of the combinations that were very difficult
00:03:08
to correlate to useful exchange names was 55.
00:03:13
- [Narrator] On the keypad, five has the letters JKL.
00:03:16
Letters, which when placed next to each other,
00:03:18
don't make many words or exchange names.
00:03:21
So, there were not many real phone numbers starting
00:03:23
with 55.
00:03:25
- [Sheldon] Klondike, which has become well-known,
00:03:27
is about the only one.
00:03:29
- Klondike 4-2106, Los Angeles please.
00:03:33
- Then call Klondike 5-3226.
00:03:36
- [Narrator] These numbers were often shortened
00:03:37
to just the first two letters plus the five digit code.
00:03:40
Since Klondike five was not frequently assigned,
00:03:43
it found other uses.
00:03:45
Bell systems noted in an official guide
00:03:47
that the 55X exchange was reserved for radio telephone.
00:03:51
- The portable transmitting and receiving radio unit
00:03:54
that makes it possible to combine radio and wire telephony
00:03:58
for communication purposes.
00:04:00
- [Narrator] This was actually a very small group
00:04:01
of numbers used in early mobile phones.
00:04:04
Klondike 5 was also a sample number used
00:04:07
in old phone company advertisements
00:04:09
and it began to be used in old movies and TV shows.
00:04:13
Eventually, area codes were introduced allowing
00:04:15
for more available phone numbers
00:04:17
and the exchange names were abolished,
00:04:20
but the 555 trope is still used today in Hollywood.
00:04:24
- What's the phone number of this store?
00:04:25
- 555-2310.
00:04:28
- [Narrator] So, if you're looking for a Ghostbuster,
00:04:31
who are you gonna call?
00:04:33
No one. (light instrumental music)
