00:00:24

00:00:31
on March 31st 2017 when dispatch in the
00:00:34
small town of debuk Iowa received a
00:00:36
frantic 911 call early in the morning it
00:00:39
was immediately clear that something was
00:00:42
horribly wrong what transpired would
00:00:45
result in a truly shocking and
00:00:46
controversial case a series of ewo
00:00:50
exclusive neverbe heard interviews shed
00:00:52
new light and we conducted our own
00:00:54
investigation to uncover even more
00:00:56
twists at the end of this unbelievable
00:00:59
case
00:01:09

they're

00:02:39
breathing the dispatcher can only relay
00:02:42
the bare minimum to her officers so when
00:02:44
they arrive at 870 can Street they have
00:02:47
no idea what they're walking into
00:02:50
however the few details given to
00:02:52
dispatch were not the full story and
00:02:54
everything is not at all what it seems
00:02:57
the following footage has never been
00:02:59
seen before form it's been analyzed by a
00:03:01
licensed professional counselor a
00:03:03
licensed clinical psychologist a civil
00:03:06
rights attorney a former detective a
00:03:08
licensed polygraph examiner and a former

the State of Florida Commission on
00:03:19
criminal justice standards and training
00:03:21
and a graduate in crime scene
00:03:23
investigations for violent
00:03:26
crimes my radio's not on
00:03:30
police
00:03:31
department down Police Department in
00:03:35
here watch the basement watch the
00:03:36
basement when officers approach the
00:03:38
kitchen they're confronted with a
00:03:39
gut-wrenching scene 21-year-old Samantha
00:03:42
link was sprawled across her kitchen
00:03:44
floor
00:03:46
unresponsive and as they kneel beside
00:03:48
Sam they can't immediately find the
00:03:50
source of her bleeding and they can't
00:03:52
find a
00:03:53
pulse already called one response a
00:03:56
female I got nothing in here I'm
00:03:58
starting CPR
00:04:01
get a real
00:04:06
quick when CPR doesn't revive her an
00:04:09
officer Sprints to his Cruiser to
00:04:11
retrieve his AED machine which can
00:04:13
deliver life-saving electric shocks to
00:04:16
restart Sam's
00:04:25
heart to Pati testal
00:04:29
so we don't cut through
00:04:31
the shock hold
00:04:37
on flashing shock button stand
00:04:40
clear delivered while officers and other
00:04:43
First Responders swarm the kitchen Sam's
00:04:46
25-year-old boyfriend fonte buo who made
00:04:49
the chaotic 911 call is just outside and
00:04:53
in the throws of a full-on meltdown we
00:04:56
spoke to fonte ourselves in an euu
00:04:58
exclusive interview that you will hear
00:05:09
later dude it please get the ambulance

00:05:19

00:05:20
up stand
00:05:23
up stand up for
00:05:27
it after what just happened adrenaline
00:05:30
has completely taken over before
00:05:32
authorities can start any questioning
00:05:35
they know they'll have to wait until
00:05:36
fonte can compose himself in the
00:05:39
meantime fonte struggles to come to
00:05:41
grips with what's happening no charges
00:05:44

00:06:27
right now is she okay yes ambulance is
00:06:30
here medical staff is here she's okay
00:06:32
thank you man as fonte gives police bits
00:06:35
and pieces of information a rough story
00:06:38
starts to emerge what started as a fun
00:06:40
night out led to an alcohol fueled spat
00:06:43
between the couple I'm marging with her
00:06:46
and it's the final straw I'm like dude I
00:06:49
like we're done she's just like not
00:06:51
trying to hear it cuz she never thought
00:06:52
I would go that far but it is dude it is
00:06:54
what am I what am I looking like look
00:06:56
right now you know what I mean over with
00:07:00
but soon a simple argument escalated
00:07:02
into the unthinkable so she's up there
00:07:05
and I'm like I'm done I'm done and she
00:07:07
just stabbed herself in the stomach dude
00:07:09
she stabbed herself yes why did she stab
00:07:12
herself do you think cuz she is upset
00:07:14
with me one of the few clear things
00:07:16
fonte had been able to share over the
00:07:18
911 call was this before I send any of
00:07:22
my units in there I need to know where
00:07:23
the knife is who stabbed them if they're
00:07:27
breathing do you know any of that it's
00:07:30
me and her we're in an
00:07:32
argument okay she is depressed and
00:07:35
stabbed herself
00:07:37
she is not right in the head in the
00:07:42
chilling aftermath of the events that
00:07:43
morning detectives find themselves
00:07:45
untangling a disturbing story and they
00:07:48
will soon uncover that it's far more
00:07:50
Twisted than things first appear in 2017
00:07:54
Sam Link was working as a certified
00:07:56
nursing assistant helping families in
00:07:59
needs
00:08:00
she was a celebrated local soccer player
00:08:02
and known amongst her friends as an
00:08:04
outgoing person fonte was a football and
00:08:07
basketball athlete throughout school and
00:08:10
shared Sam's love of sports everyone
00:08:13
really loved Fon you know everyone
00:08:15
gravitated towards him so I've known
00:08:16
fonte for almost 20 years uh we met
00:08:19
during our first week at Jefferson jior
00:08:21
High he's friendly and very loving
00:08:25
person in an exclusive interview with
00:08:27
ewo fonte discussed the beginning of his
00:08:30
relationship with Sam she was really
00:08:32
nice you know she seemed really happy it
00:08:36
was easy going you know no one expected
00:08:38
that a couple so full of life would end
00:08:40
up in such a dark and terrifying
00:08:43
situation as First Responders work to
00:08:45
save Sam's life police bring fonte back
00:08:48
to the station to answer a few questions
00:08:51
at first I was just like oh it's just
00:08:54
protocol he was the only one on scene
00:08:57
but once he's had a few moments alone to
00:08:59
catch his breath his behavior is curious
00:09:02
to say the least however this could be
00:09:04
due to the fact that he's been assured
00:09:06
Sam will be okay and the First
00:09:08
Responders are doing everything in their
00:09:09
power to save her regardless his
00:09:12
behavior comes off as
00:09:19
[Laughter]
00:09:23
disturbing and I got blood on my shirt
00:09:26
oh my
00:09:27
God fonte was read his Miranda rights
00:09:30
while in the back of the police vehicle
00:09:32
and again before the questioning started
00:09:35
though he wasn't under arrest it's
00:09:37
important to remember that when police
00:09:39
ask you to answer questions about an
00:09:41
incident even if you're an innocent
00:09:43
bystander to say that you want to talk
00:09:45
to a lawyer before answering if you ask
00:09:48
for a lawyer all questioning must stop
00:09:51
officer wall is tasked with watching
00:09:53
fonte while the detectives get ready to
00:09:55
question him about what exactly happened
00:09:57
before police arrived on the scene
00:10:00
fonte launches into his story eager to
00:10:02
share every detail of the previous
00:10:04
evening up until these early morning
00:10:06
hours he explains an ongoing agreement
00:10:09
that he has with Sam twice a week on
00:10:12
Thursdays and Saturdays he goes out with
00:10:14
friends for reasons that will soon be
00:10:17
revealed to police fonte prefers flying
00:10:19
solo on these nights leaving Sam back at
00:10:23
home but last night Sam proposed a
00:10:26
different idea she well hey Sam you know
00:10:29
kick with me I was like I was like you
00:10:32
know all right yeah I can do that I was
00:10:34
like well what we going to do with that
00:10:35
oh we go to the best wor and chill on
00:10:37
the hot tub and I was like okay yeah so
00:10:39
we went there chill you know got a
00:10:42
bottle having a good time but before
00:10:45
long their plans take a turn when fonte
00:10:47
gets a phone call from his friend Ricky
00:10:50
who invited them to join him and other
00:10:52
friends at the bar still dressed in
00:10:54
their swimsuits and sweatpants the two
00:10:56
head out to one of font's favorite
00:10:58
haunts a local bar called Easy Street by
00:11:02
all accounts the outing had a great
00:11:04
start fonte sister spoke to us in an
00:11:06
interview about that night I remember
00:11:09
seeing them the night before they had
00:11:11
taken pictures and stuff and they just
00:11:13
were having a really good time but as
00:11:15
the night progressed cameras from Easy
00:11:17
Street catch a glimpse of the ups and
00:11:19
downs that evening in between periods of
00:11:21
obvious tension and physical distance
00:11:24
Sam and fonte were seen taking photos
00:11:26
together and kissing while it's not
00:11:28
clear what specific incident ignited the
00:11:31
series of fights between fonte and Sam
00:11:34
authorities learned there were two main
00:11:35
points of contention a conversation
00:11:38
between fonte and Sam and a chat he had
00:11:40
with another woman at the bar and his
00:11:43
friend Ricky elaborates in our interview
00:11:46
at the beginning everything was for the
00:11:48
most part fun fine but as the night kind
00:11:52
of continued Sam had a couple episodes
00:11:56
with one with the girl I was seeing at
00:11:57
the time and then one of her friends
00:11:59
friends I think it kind of originated
00:12:01
just because Sam hadn't ever been
00:12:02
introduced to them Inon and I we were
00:12:05
just all having you know casual
00:12:07
conversations and she got upset about it
00:12:11
according to meline the woman who spoke
00:12:13
with fonte Sam allegedly started yelling
00:12:16
at her but fonte stepped in and
00:12:18
de-escalated the situation that goes
00:12:21
down and then it kind of just took off I
00:12:23
want to had to smoke with her we come
00:12:25
back in and she she goes in the bathroom
00:12:28
of the G like talking with her like half
00:12:29
hour I was like I thought you just hat
00:12:30
like she's ready ready to kill this girl
00:12:32
I'm asking her what happened like I
00:12:34
don't care I was like what like what
00:12:35
turn the switch you know I mean she's
00:12:37
like oh she's like oh nothing and she
00:12:39
gets all mad and leaves cuz I was asking
00:12:42
her a question she never wants to talk
00:12:43
about nothing but from the sound of
00:12:45
things this incident may not have been
00:12:47
the real problem at all at some point in
00:12:50
the evening Sam apparently left the bar
00:12:52
for a short time only to come back with
00:12:55
her sight set on fonte in our exclusive
00:12:58
interview with font
00:12:59
he explains what happened I tried
00:13:02
calling her over and over and she
00:13:05
wouldn't pick up and about 20 minutes
00:13:06
later she came back to the bar and she
00:13:09
just looked like significantly more
00:13:13
intoxicated like I said this was like a
00:13:15
common thing when we went out when she
00:13:18
returned fonte tells police that Sam
00:13:20
asked him for the names of his
00:13:22
ex-girlfriends the first thing I was
00:13:24
like do you really want to know that
00:13:25
question you know what I mean like I
00:13:27
ain't got nothing to hide but like you
00:13:28
you're drunk and you're going to you
00:13:30
want to get pissed did you pull her
00:13:32
aside and talk to her you were still
00:13:33
talking to oh hell yeah she was Mak
00:13:35
scene I was like sorry went outside and
00:13:38
talk yeah she just was not hearing what
00:13:42
I was saying fonte explains that the
00:13:45
friction between them steadily worsened
00:13:47
eventually he says Sam grew heated and
00:13:49
walked away disappearing from the bar a
00:13:52
second time and according to Sam's older
00:13:55
sister this wasn't necessarily out of
00:13:57
the norm for Sam she doesn't like
00:14:00
confrontation she doesn't want to argue
00:14:02
she doesn't want to fight and so in
00:14:04
instead of fighting with him she would
00:14:06
leave she wanted to settle down um and
00:14:10
he didn't and so they'd fight about that
00:14:13
a lot I'm like why are you spazzing over
00:14:16
some that you she like cuz I would blah
00:14:19
blah and all this and she just I don't
00:14:22
know she just got she's not like that
00:14:25
just when she drinks she's where' she go
00:14:27
then I don't know
00:14:29
but she left and then came back in like
00:14:33
20 minutes okay so were you texting her
00:14:36
when she left no no in an effort to
00:14:39
confirm the events that night police
00:14:41
would soon gather more information from
00:14:43
font's cell phone information suggesting
00:14:46
a slightly different version of events
00:14:49
but for now he shares more context about
00:14:51
his relationship with Sam she came back
00:14:54
again cuz she's thinking this is how she
00:14:56
thinks you know she thinks I'm like
00:14:58
doing she she came back trying to see if
00:15:00
I was well this is what I think anyways
00:15:02
like she came back trying to see if I
00:15:04
was doing something you haven't done
00:15:06
anything to to make her not trust you at
00:15:08
all that
00:15:10
like this ain't a relation I've never
00:15:12
cheated on her or any girl like I'm not
00:15:15
you know what I mean like it's it's not
00:15:16
like we got like a you know relationship
00:15:19
like that you know I want you to know
00:15:21
that she
00:15:22
just has trust issues you know fonte
00:15:27
elaborated on his past troubles with Sam
00:15:30
I've been a jealous woman before but
00:15:32
this was just extraordinary like I mean
00:15:35
anything at all someone said my name or
00:15:38
anything she just assumed that there was
00:15:41
something going on whenever anyone came
00:15:43
up to us like I always introduced her as
00:15:46
my girlfriend I never there was never
00:15:49
anything funny about that but arguing
00:15:51
had become more and more common in Sam
00:15:53
and font's relationship lately me at the
00:15:56
beginning you know I was extremely happy
00:15:59
for fonte you know I could see the
00:16:00
happiness in his face he would speak on
00:16:02
it often I'd say about a month or so
00:16:04
though before the incident he did voice
00:16:06
some concern and was thinking about
00:16:08
breaking up with Sam but fonte wasn't
00:16:11
ready to throw in the towel just yet so
00:16:13
he did his best to keep the peace so she
00:16:16
left the first time because she found
00:16:17
out that you about your past
00:16:19
relationship she was mad she left then
00:16:22
she came back out of nowhere and came up
00:16:25
to the bar order to drink like nothing
00:16:27
happened and then what happened
00:16:29
and then after that we started arguing
00:16:32
again
00:16:36
and I'm sorry I'm a little fuzzy here
00:16:38
either she gave me a ride
00:16:41
or I'm pretty sure she gave me a ride
00:16:44
either that or I got to ride with on my
00:16:46
buddies and they Dro me out I really
00:16:48
like you don't remember if you got to
00:16:49
ride from her or
00:16:50
you I can't remember I will tell you was
00:16:53
either from her or one of my buddies
00:16:55
like you know so it's one of those two
00:16:58
I'm not being Shady was she already in
00:17:00
the house when you got
00:17:02
there
00:17:06
um man this is is hurting me right now
00:17:10
no I'm just I'm just wondering I just
00:17:12
want everything to add up so I know I
00:17:14
know it's really important Von's memory
00:17:18
is fuzzy in other areas too even though
00:17:21
he denied texting Sam when she left the
00:17:23
bar that night court documents reflect
00:17:25
that he fired off at least eight
00:17:27
messages in a span of under 2 hours he
00:17:30
wrote you're doing dumb again trying to
00:17:33
ruin us why you're such a hypocrite you
00:17:37
think I didn't hear about you from your
00:17:38
sis and her friends grow up it was
00:17:41
before us you're pushing a good thing
00:17:44
away this is what I'm talking about what
00:17:46
if I did this I'm by myself looking
00:17:49
stupid so I got 2 minutes and I'm
00:17:51
leaving nobody knows where you are like
00:17:54
always and finally now this girl in my
00:17:57
face talking how she went cuz when she
00:17:59
in the bathroom with her you made me
00:18:01
look like a fool Sam never responds to
00:18:04
font's messages but the two eventually
00:18:07
reconnect around 2:00 a.m. the bar shuts
00:18:09
its doors for the night forcing the
00:18:11
couple to head back home and it's here
00:18:14
that their quarreling reaches fever
00:18:15
pitch allegedly over font's past
00:18:19
relationships arguing like screaming
00:18:22
I've never like screamed at somebody
00:18:25
like this and sou playing ball you know
00:18:27
I mean I like I like
00:18:29
that's like I'm gone you know so why
00:18:32
were you upset huh cuz she's spazzing
00:18:35
over nothing that matters she's not
00:18:38
letting it go you know I'm drinking that
00:18:40
don't help she's drinking that's why
00:18:42
she's even bringing us up you know I'm
00:18:45
just like you know you got to go you got
00:18:46
to go and she's just like she like I'm
00:18:48
not going I'm just like no you need to
00:18:50
go right now and she just starts get in
00:18:51
my face starts push me I'm like I I
00:18:55
never put like hands like I can restrain
00:18:57
and Sh like you you swing on me I could
00:19:00
if it's a girl I could easily cut your
00:19:02
hand and your right hand and what are
00:19:05
you really going to do she fall yes yes
00:19:08
fell on the ground yes so you pushed her
00:19:10
against the wall or no no I I pushed her
00:19:13
back for myself she hold on came back at
00:19:16
me again like stop grabed her grabbed
00:19:18
her she's trying to punch me but I got
00:19:20
her arms you know I like I was like stop
00:19:22
stop so she was on the ground sitting
00:19:25
down and I you know I grabbed her like
00:19:29
this I did not touch her and I I grabbed
00:19:32
her I said you know let's go you know
00:19:35
what I mean you to get her upstairs yes
00:19:38
yeah and she's swinging on like all I'm
00:19:41
doing it even if she's hitting me I'm
00:19:44
taking them you know but when it gets
00:19:45
out she's you know she can
00:19:47
hit whenever you know that's that pushed
00:19:50
her that was the worst i' I did to her
00:19:53
even as police ask things that would
00:19:54
make the average person anxious or
00:19:56
uncomfortable fonte responds with an
00:19:58
eerie flippancy those scratches you got
00:20:02
you got a couple scratch I
00:20:05
do she have long nails
00:20:08
or uh I don't know I mean she's not like
00:20:10
a diva like normal they look kind of
00:20:14
like nail marks or something so yeah in
00:20:17
addition to the scratches police
00:20:18
observed on his face police find similar
00:20:21
marks on font's chest and both sides of
00:20:23
his neck so you brought her upstairs
00:20:26
yeah yeah we're we're fighting you know
00:20:29
going upstairs she gets upstairs I'm you
00:20:32
know this is the last sh I'm like get
00:20:34
out and I'm screaming I'm like we're
00:20:36
done she goes over she's about from me
00:20:40
to the corner way and there's that
00:20:42
little uh you know like knife thing you
00:20:45
know with a bunch of knives yeah yeah
00:20:46
yeah just got she pulls it out and I'm
00:20:49
like sorry um okay there's a stairs
00:20:53
right here I'm standing on the stairs
00:20:55
between the kitchen right here and I got
00:20:57
my other foot on the downstairs she is
00:21:00
over here she grabs a knife after we're
00:21:03
in like the most heated of the argument
00:21:05
she grabs a knife so I'm thinking you
00:21:08
know she's coming at me so I grab I'm on
00:21:11
this you know got my foot on the kitchen
00:21:12
and my back foot on the door I grabb the
00:21:15
door for it thinking she's gonna you
00:21:17
know come at me I'm come come and she
00:21:20
just and I just started freaking out you
00:21:23
know okay I was the that's the most M
00:21:26
I've ever been in anybody in my whole
00:21:27
life but even though she did that I was
00:21:31
like it was really scary she didn't make
00:21:32
any attempt to come at you no she didn't
00:21:35
nope not with her knife in the midst of
00:21:38
font's reenactment the officer also
00:21:40
throws in a subtle question about Sam
00:21:42
and the knife one that may be designed
00:21:45
to prevent any future claims of
00:21:46
self-defense should fonte be
00:21:48
intentionally deceiving
00:21:51
them and I just lost it dude you like so
00:21:55
that's where all the blood came from as
00:21:56
you trying to I don't know I can't tell
00:21:58
you that for sure I would assume so I
00:22:00
did not you know like right when that
00:22:03
happened but you went over there and
00:22:04
tried to help her is what I'm saying she
00:22:07
stabbed herself and I was like what I
00:22:10
was like what you know I went up went up
00:22:12
and I I just I didn't even touch her I
00:22:15
don't think as fonte retells the story
00:22:17
to different officers and detectives
00:22:19
slight differences emerge he will later
00:22:22
claim that he checked for Sam's pulse
00:22:24
but couldn't feel it she is okay now yes
00:22:28
yes as far as I know she's like I said I
00:22:30
didn't really see her I didn't really
00:22:32
who told you that she was okay one of
00:22:34
the officers told us that she was okay
00:22:36
and the EMS that was transporting her
00:22:40
you know also said that she was doing
00:22:41
fine that not know she made it that's
00:22:46
it is she breathing shut up you tell me
00:22:50
if she's
00:22:52
breathing it's
00:22:54
fine not I'm not that Lev of my content
00:22:57
you know yeah so which is
00:22:59
fine not necessar saying I feel better
00:23:02
but I do despite seeming confident here
00:23:06
fonte had some concerns when he first
00:23:08
stepped in the interrogation room I'm
00:23:11
cool right like do I need to not like do
00:23:14
I need to protect myself what do you
00:23:16
mean like I'm not doing it like I'm cool
00:23:20
right there's no like no no no basically
00:23:25
why we're doing in here just because
00:23:26
it's going to be recorded right yeah
00:23:29
that's fine I mean everything
00:23:31
everything's recorded anyways but sure I
00:23:33
just want to protect myself yeah no
00:23:36
fonte seems to sense that he may be in
00:23:38
trouble if he keeps talking but he stops
00:23:40
short of asking for a lawyer officer
00:23:43
wall steps out and two detectives
00:23:45
arrived to finally begin their interview
00:23:47
with fonte I don't feel that I'm in the
00:23:49
wrong I would have never forgave myself
00:23:51
if she would have di there I like I that
00:23:55
wasn't my fault like she is I care about
00:23:58
the girl but she has issues and we can't
00:24:00
be together she is she's very good just
00:24:03
when she drinks it's not good she's a
00:24:08
really good person like I don't want you
00:24:09
guys get the wrong foot on her I'm not
00:24:12
like I want nothing to do I don't want
00:24:15
contact nothing like that that was
00:24:17
that's crazy to me as the detective asks
00:24:20
more appointed questions fonte stresses
00:24:23
multiple times that he has no interest
00:24:25
in seeing or speaking with Sam ever
00:24:27
again
00:24:29
the scratch and stuff and you got like a
00:24:31
little bruise on here was that from her
00:24:34
or had I don't want like I said like I
00:24:37
don't want to impress any charges like I
00:24:39
don't want nothing to do with the girl
00:24:42
that's all I want to know she's fine
00:24:43
finally the officer that I just talked
00:24:45
to was super cool told me she was all
00:24:48
right that's all I want to know I we if
00:24:52
it wasn't already done it's that you
00:24:56
need somebody to stab theirself in the
00:24:58
I'm afraid to say go I guess I
00:25:01
do are we are we done I'm not I'm tired
00:25:05
man like I I've had three people come
00:25:08
I'm answering the same questions for you
00:25:10
guys am I rested or not oh we're still
00:25:13
just a question yeah we're still kind of
00:25:15
trying to piece things together to be
00:25:17
honest I honestly don't have a a a
00:25:20
straight answer for you I just I need
00:25:22
one or else I'm going to leave okay well
00:25:24
let me figure out cuz con turn's outside
00:25:26
okay and let me talk to them
00:25:29
later a deposition of Sam's ex-boyfriend
00:25:31
would reveal an incident that Rings
00:25:33
eerily familiar to the one that fonte
00:25:35
has been describing to police in his
00:25:38
statement Sam's former boyfriend
00:25:39
describes an argument between himself
00:25:41
and Sam that ended in her suddenly and
00:25:44
angrily reaching for none other than a
00:25:46
knife but he alleges the fight ended
00:25:48
when he took the weapon away from her
00:25:50
before she could harm either one of them
00:25:53
the similarities are hard to ignore two
00:25:56
fights two different boyfriends and two
00:25:58
knives pulled In the Heat of the Moment
00:26:01
but as font's grandfather alleges in an
00:26:03
exclusive interview Sam's past
00:26:06
relationship may have been a catalyst
00:26:07
for this type of behavior here he makes
00:26:10
a claim about Sam and her ex note that
00:26:12
he's not talking about fonte but rather
00:26:15
the same ex-boyfriend who gave a
00:26:17
deposition about Sam reaching for a
00:26:18
knife during an argument they fought a
00:26:22
lot and actually fought physically and
00:26:25
evidently it was physically the point
00:26:28
that he would hit her if these
00:26:30
allegations are true Sam may have felt
00:26:32
that her argument with fonte would also
00:26:34
turn physical leading her to grab a
00:26:37
weapon perhaps in self-defense but this
00:26:40
case is anything but clearcut Sam was
00:26:43
diagnosed first with borderline
00:26:45
personality disorder and then later with
00:26:47
bipolar disorder she reportedly told a
00:26:50
hospital staff member I feel every day
00:26:54
and no one will help me confidential
00:26:57
documentation would later allude to
00:26:59
Sam's intent to end her life perhaps on
00:27:01
multiple occasions as well as the means
00:27:04
by which she would do so stating that
00:27:06
she would grab whatever she could find
00:27:09
but Sam eventually began a treatment
00:27:11
plan that seemed to stabilize her
00:27:13
condition in fact Sam paid a visit to
00:27:16
her psychiatrist just one day before the
00:27:18
incident and the medical note suggests
00:27:20
she was doing well she rided herself
00:27:23
with a low depression score in any case
00:27:26
police need something more concrete to
00:27:28
guide their investigation what what
00:27:30
could I possibly do to make somebody
00:27:33
want to stab theirself in the stomach
00:27:36
you get what I'm you feel me like I hope
00:27:38
somebody bues me cuz it looks bad I BL
00:27:42
on my thumb and my shirt but I'm
00:27:45
left-handed though that makes me look a
00:27:47
little good
00:27:53
right I've I've taken her to counselors
00:27:55
I you stab yourself in the stomach I I
00:27:59
I'm not a whatever that people that do I
00:28:03
I don't know she's nuts I know that
00:28:05
she's like she all girls are crazy she a
00:28:08
little more crazy but not like that
00:28:11
there's a switch that hit sometimes and
00:28:13
she just come I mean was she like
00:28:15
cursing at you
00:28:16
like yeah and all that kind of stuff
00:28:19
yeah well that's any girl right you know
00:28:22
sheing Furious fale what fonte doesn't
00:28:25
know is that police will soon get more
00:28:27
firsthand accounts of what happened at
00:28:28
Easy Street and this time the details
00:28:31
come from Sam's friends Sam was with
00:28:34
three different women at the bar and
00:28:37
according to their statements she sat in
00:28:38
her parked car outside of Easy Street at
00:28:41
one point Crying In the Heat of her
00:28:43
argument with fonte he allegedly threw
00:28:46
her cell phone and purse when one of the
00:28:49
friends went inside to retrieve her
00:28:50
things fonte reportedly refused snapping
00:28:54
that Sam could get the phone herself and
00:28:56
in our interview with font hey he
00:28:58
doesn't dispute this I mean the whole
00:29:02
rest of the night we were Sam and I were
00:29:04
just really arguing a lot and she just
00:29:06
kept leaving from the bar and coming
00:29:08
back several times and each time she
00:29:10
just came back more and more like
00:29:13
intoxicated she was actually prescribed
00:29:16
Xanax and Aderall and when she mix them
00:29:19
like when she was drinking it was just
00:29:21
it's always bad plus she was on a lot of
00:29:24
anti-depressants and things like that so
00:29:27
it got worse and say the night went on
00:29:29
and as the bar neared closing friends
00:29:31
say they offered Sam a ride for a
00:29:33
potentially life-changing moment she
00:29:36
considered leaving with them Sam and her
00:29:39
friends were interrupted when fonte
00:29:40
approached her car Witnesses recall
00:29:43
overhearing font and it was clear to
00:29:45
them that he didn't want her to leave
00:29:46
with friends ultimately Sam decides to
00:29:50
drive herself and fonte back home if
00:29:53
eyewitness accounts are true it seems
00:29:55
fonte left several details out of his
00:29:57
original timeline maybe these omissions
00:30:00
can be written off as nerves or
00:30:01
lingering intoxication but police are
00:30:04
still left wondering what else they
00:30:06
don't know soon they would get a
00:30:08
surprising piece of evidence from font's
00:30:10
phone one that would prove very
00:30:12
difficult to refute the detectives from
00:30:15
earlier return once again this time to
00:30:17
reveal the shocking truth they've been
00:30:19
keeping from fonte flipping everything
00:30:22
you think you know about this case on
00:30:24
its head but this is just the first of
00:30:26
many twists in this this case as you'll
00:30:29
see by the end we're investigators you
00:30:32
get that right yeah so this matter is
00:30:35
pretty serious I get it bad news is she
00:30:38
didn't make
00:30:40
it your girlfriend is
00:30:43
dead yeah I'm sorry to break that to you
00:30:46
but this is the seriousness of this as
00:30:49
he's confronted with the terrible news
00:30:51
that Sam has died fonte appears to
00:30:54
freeze he's been highly animated until
00:30:56
this moment it could be the shock of
00:30:59
loss but his response seems to be an
00:31:01
example of cognitive overload and could
00:31:03
be him processing what to do next and if
00:31:06
he now may be facing charges he's
00:31:08
clearly reeling so I know you're a
00:31:11
[Applause]
00:31:13
little she did not make it
00:31:16
[Applause]
00:31:45
oh
00:32:05
oh my
00:32:08
God oh my
00:32:19
[Applause]
00:32:25
God can't man I can't do
00:32:30
it I don't deserve do
00:32:34
that
00:32:38
she oh my god
00:32:50
dude dude called him so
00:32:55
fast I called him dude
00:33:16
[Applause]
00:33:25
earlier fonte appeared to be relieved
00:33:27
when he was told that Sam was doing okay
00:33:29
and calmed down considerably this is
00:33:32
significant because typically a guilty
00:33:34
person would likely be panicked knowing
00:33:36
that the victim is still alive to tell
00:33:38
the true
00:33:39
story however once he's told she's dead
00:33:42
he lost it again alternatively at the
00:33:45
news of Sam's death he could now be
00:33:47
realizing just how serious the
00:33:48
consequences could
00:33:50
be for me I go I can't take me somewhere
00:33:53
Man this ain't going to work we got to
00:33:55
go no I'm not no no dude do what you got
00:33:59
to do hold on just have right now stand
00:34:02
up with me
00:34:04
please you take me somewhere I'm not
00:34:07
chilling in here you to go you to go no
00:34:12
I want go with this chair dude get me
00:34:16
out of here if I don't need to be here
00:34:19
God damn it why you people
00:34:21
J you need to stay calm with us yeah you
00:34:24
need to go through this am I here or am
00:34:27
I not here you're here we're trying go
00:34:30
and I can I go no and that's what we're
00:34:32
trying to Del okay what do I need to do
00:34:35
for you people we're we're getting
00:34:36
search War as I explain we're going slow
00:34:38
and deliberate this is a serious matter
00:34:40
you need to cooperate with us have been
00:34:42
Cooper ABS boy out there lied to me and
00:34:45
said was fine she said she was fine I
00:34:50
know that he he lied he lied I don't
00:34:53
know what he lied that off that young
00:34:56
25y old the same ages me said your than
00:34:59
you just like me and you look me dead in
00:35:01
the eye said everything was cool made me
00:35:02
feel comfortable she's dead turn around
00:35:06
and we have to put some handcuffs on you
00:35:07
okay is that fair where you want some
00:35:09
fresh air I'll get you some fresh air so
00:35:11
you can I want smoke a cigarette I can't
00:35:13
let you smoke this would be a good time
00:35:15
to let fonte take a break and go out for
00:35:17
a cigarette a cigarette can be an
00:35:19
incredibly useful tool to bond in the
00:35:21
interrogation room as allowing someone
00:35:24
to take a break is a great way to build
00:35:26
rapport and attime s even referred to as
00:35:28
a Talking Stick as it helps get
00:35:31
information out of people it would have
00:35:33
been a good idea to take this kind of
00:35:35
break here because as you'll soon see
00:35:37
fonte is about to be out of control and
00:35:40
a smoke break may have helped let me go
00:35:44
I do not care if you're not arresting me
00:35:46
get me the out here I'm G to freak out
00:35:48
dude if you're not arresting me I'm
00:35:51
going to walk out this room right now
00:35:52
you're being detained you're not going
00:35:53
to walk out okay fonte is told he's now
00:35:56
being detained which which is an
00:35:57
indication that he's in custody as he's
00:35:59
not being allowed to leave the police
00:36:02
likely intentionally withheld telling
00:36:04
him this in order to keep him talking if
00:36:06
they told him earlier there's a chance
00:36:08
he would not have agreed to talk to them
00:36:10
this is why it's so important to ask for
00:36:13
a lawyer before ever speaking to police
00:36:16
however it is not illegal for the police
00:36:17
to withhold explicitly telling fonte he
00:36:20
is being detained until now when he
00:36:22
attempts to leave search war is for your
00:36:24
person your body we're doing that we
00:36:26
collect some things from you your
00:36:28
clothing your vcle swabs your full I
00:36:30
can't process while you're standing are
00:36:32
you gonna take me to jail what are you
00:36:34
gonna do dud you don't get it you think
00:36:36
I can just sit here right now I'm I'm
00:36:38
about to freak off I know but you need
00:36:40
to I've been calling with you guys the
00:36:42
whole time here he let me going kill
00:36:45
your wife how you going to feel you say
00:36:46
here yeah I'm going to be no you're not
00:36:49
no you're not and don't look at me in
00:36:51
the eye like you are right I agree no I
00:36:53
agree with you no say that let me go no
00:36:58
would take me somewhere in our exclusive
00:37:01
interview fonte discussed his seemingly
00:37:04
unusual demeanor during the
00:37:05
interrogation and what he says he was
00:37:08
going through in these moments initially
00:37:11
when I came down to the police station I
00:37:14
was led to believe that Sam was still
00:37:16
alive you know that officer said manto
00:37:18
man she's getting help right now and
00:37:20
she's going to be fine and he had no
00:37:22
knowledge of that at all I don't know if
00:37:24
he just said that so I would calm down
00:37:26
or what but I was pretty like
00:37:27
lightharted about it because I'm
00:37:29
thinking that she's alive right and
00:37:32
after I'm done telling the story they
00:37:36
tell me oh we have some bad news uh your
00:37:39
girlfriend didn't make it and I just was
00:37:42
went right back to being hysterical I
00:37:44
was scream I was angry that they had
00:37:46
lied to me yeah I just really just lost
00:37:49
control right there if I had thought
00:37:52
that she wasn't alive I I would have
00:37:54
been continued to be hysterical like I
00:37:57
was and when they tell me that she died
00:38:00
I completely went back to that I don't
00:38:03
not like you guys you don't get it you
00:38:05
never had this happen to you I
00:38:08
agree you're right that we haven't had
00:38:10
this happen to
00:38:11
us oh my god get me out of here please
00:38:16
talk to ma get me out of here I'm
00:38:18
freaking out as First Responders
00:38:20
exhausted all efforts to save Sam that
00:38:23
morning they were soon faced with a grim
00:38:25
reality
00:38:28
her age is only helping us right
00:38:32
now with 20s two stab through the chest
00:38:37
CPR now she is a on the monitor after
00:38:41
providing Sam with CPR and AED support
00:38:44
for almost 10 minutes they were still
00:38:46
unable to detect a heartbeat so at 2:32
00:38:50
a.m. First Responders called her time of
00:38:53
death we spoke to Sam's older sister
00:38:56
Cassie and she shared her memories of
00:38:58
Sam before this heartbreaking moment Sam
00:39:01
was my younger sister but she was always
00:39:03
bigger
00:39:05
faster um smarter than me she uh she was
00:39:09
something else she loved animals dogs
00:39:12
and cats especially she loved caring for
00:39:16
other people and while Sam Slipped Away
00:39:19
a strange exchange was taking place on
00:39:21
the front porch fonte was in total
00:39:24
hysterics outside the home and one
00:39:26
officer's body body camera captured an
00:39:28
alarming statement one that seemed to
00:39:30
hint at what may have happened early
00:39:32
that morning oh my God Rel man no I
00:39:35
can't relax dude stabing up the stomach
00:39:39
over nothing
00:39:41
dude I called you that so long ago and
00:39:44
there's still not an ambulance is on the
00:39:46
floor dude rela yeah you relax go stab
00:39:50
your spouse in the face I'll tell you to
00:39:53
relax you stop what what more can you do
00:39:55
to me physical evidence from the scene
00:39:57
suggested font's hair Rising comment may
00:40:00
have been more than jumbled words in a
00:40:02
moment of
00:40:03
distress however in our interview fonte
00:40:06
addresses his seemingly chilling
00:40:07
statement to police in front of the
00:40:09
house at the time I didn't know that
00:40:13
police had to come and make sure the
00:40:15
scene was safe for you know ambulance
00:40:17
and First Responders I I felt like no
00:40:20
one was helping her and I was just weak
00:40:23
and just didn't have you know anything
00:40:25
left you know they kept telling me to
00:40:28
stand up stand up and I just eventually
00:40:31
just exploded and I just told them I'll
00:40:35
stab your spouse in the face and you try
00:40:38
and relax and I didn't say that because
00:40:40
I heard anyone or did anything I just
00:40:43
had so many like different emotions and
00:40:45
and it just came out like that like what
00:40:47
I meant was trying to say to them was
00:40:50
like you have something like this
00:40:51
happened to you and you try to like
00:40:53
stand up and relax the toxicology report
00:40:56
showed that Sam had a blood alcohol
00:40:58
level of
00:40:59
.22 as well as Xanax Prozac marijuana
00:41:03
benzo dipene and cocaine in her system
00:41:06
drinking alcohol while taking certain
00:41:08
medication can be very dangerous Xanax
00:41:11
and Prozac are nervous system
00:41:13
depressants when combined with alcohol
00:41:16
Xanax can greatly increase the chances
00:41:18
of severe impairments including sedation
00:41:21
blackouts and even seizures it also can
00:41:24
cause the person to become out of
00:41:26
control and dis anxiety depression mood
00:41:29
swings or
00:41:31
aggression when Xanax is mixed with
00:41:33
alcohol it also takes a lot less alcohol
00:41:36
for the person to get
00:41:37
intoxicated additionally alcohol
00:41:39
interferes with the effectiveness of
00:41:41
anti-depressant medications so if Sam
00:41:44
was drinking regularly and especially if
00:41:46
she's drinking several drinks at a time
00:41:48
her anti-depressants specifically Prozac
00:41:51
were likely not working the way they
00:41:53
should mixing proac and cocaine can
00:41:56
increase the risk of serotonin syndrome
00:41:59
a potentially life-threatening condition
00:42:01
characterized by agitation confusion
00:42:04
rapid heart rate high blood pressure and
00:42:07
hypothermia combining substances is very
00:42:10
dangerous and
00:42:12
unpredictable in the kitchen a
00:42:14
suspicious dent in the dishwasher near
00:42:16
Sam's body suggested a struggle took
00:42:18
place as for Sam she was visibly
00:42:21
disheveled both of her boots were kicked
00:42:24
off her feet and her hair was pulled out
00:42:26
of her ponytail
00:42:27
she also sustained multiple injuries
00:42:30
including a large bruise on her forehead
00:42:32
injuries to her scalp and bruising on
00:42:35
her nose and inside of her mouth two
00:42:38
long deep Cuts were present on the back
00:42:40
of her right hand according to the
00:42:42
medical examiner these were indicative
00:42:44
of self-defense but this has been the
00:42:47
subject of some debate Sam also had
00:42:49
scratch marks on her stomach several
00:42:52
small injuries to her lower body and a
00:42:54
total of 19 abrasions on her left Chek
00:42:57
chest a shocking piece of evidence will
00:42:59
soon be revealed that might explain some
00:43:02
of these injuries whatever happened it
00:43:05
was violent but font's family isn't
00:43:08
convinced he did anything but defend
00:43:10
himself there is some evidence that he
00:43:13
had Pusher but he had to get her off of
00:43:15
him because he she was biting through
00:43:17
her cheek his cheek in our conversation
00:43:20
with fonte he shares more details about
00:43:23
what happened in the basement as he and
00:43:25
Sam argued I said just just leave like
00:43:27
get out of my house please you know and
00:43:30
I was cussing at her you know and you
00:43:32
know calling her names and stuff like
00:43:35
that that's I'm not proud of but I was
00:43:37
just really frustrated not long after
00:43:39
that she stood up like she was gonna
00:43:41
leave and she just started punching me
00:43:43
in the face I'm was screaming at her and
00:43:46
she just keeps trying to punch me and
00:43:48
punch me so I wrestling around and
00:43:52
eventually I of her and I have like her
00:43:55
hands Penn down as I'm yelling at her
00:43:58
she like leans up and starts biting my
00:44:02
face and like she ends up getting like
00:44:06
her teeth like on my cheek and just it's
00:44:08
like it's really sinking in and I'm
00:44:10
trying to pull away and she's like I'm
00:44:11
feeling like she's gonna like take a
00:44:14
chunk out of of my cheek so I didn't
00:44:17
know what else to do so I I took my
00:44:19
thumb and I started like pressing it
00:44:22
against her eyelid immediately when I
00:44:24
did that she stopped biting me and I
00:44:27
stopped as well and I just stood up and
00:44:29
I said please you know leave like I I
00:44:32
don't want anything to do with you
00:44:34
anymore she just looks at me and like
00:44:36
kind of like just gives me this like a
00:44:40
weird like smile we get to the top of
00:44:42
the stairs she instead of going left
00:44:46
like she was about to leave she uh go
00:44:49
straight into the kitchen and she grabs
00:44:52
the busher knife and she turns around
00:44:54
and faces me and instead of coming after
00:44:57
me she takes the knife and she stabs
00:45:00
herself which I thought was in her
00:45:04
stomach but it was actually in her like
00:45:06
sternum like chest area and it looked
00:45:09
she went it looked like she went like
00:45:11
halfway in and then
00:45:14
Mor and I just completely panicked but
00:45:17
the main aggressor in the argument isn't
00:45:19
the only subject of debate there's also
00:45:22
the issue of the knife the blade that
00:45:24
Sam supposedly stabbed herself with was
00:45:26
found 10 ft from her body on the living
00:45:29
room carpet in order for the knife to
00:45:31
land in the living room Sam would have
00:45:33
to muster the energy to fling the blade
00:45:35
into the next room as she bled out two
00:45:38
of Sam's three stab wounds fully
00:45:40
punctured her chest with the knife
00:45:42
plunging into her heart and her right
00:45:44
lung court documents describe both
00:45:47
wounds as independently fatal both
00:45:50
rendering her incapacitated immediately
00:45:53
but this claim begs the question would
00:45:55
it be possible for Sam to punk her chest
00:45:57
fatally at least two times one expert
00:46:00
weighing in on Sam's case stated that
00:46:02
multiple stab wounds were found in zero%
00:46:05
of self-inflicted deaths however the
00:46:07
study was limited to a review of Blade
00:46:09
wounds for only a 10-year period and
00:46:12
only in Vermont the medical examiner
00:46:15
also explained that trajectory of the
00:46:17
knife was important in Sam's case the
00:46:19
orientation of the stab wounds were
00:46:21
either oblique or vertical which is rare
00:46:24
when self-inflicted as it forces someone
00:46:26
to hold the knife at an awkward angle
00:46:29
it's important to note that despite
00:46:31
these claims professional opinions still
00:46:33
vary in the same Vermont study
00:46:35
referenced by experts in this case
00:46:37
researchers noted that circumstantial
00:46:39
evidence plays a crucial role in
00:46:41
determining who caused blade wounds as
00:46:44
no characteristics they studied were
00:46:46
Surefire signs of homicide or
00:46:48
self-infliction additionally there are
00:46:50
many other cases where people had
00:46:52
similar wounds and did not die
00:46:55
instantaneously according to who
00:46:57
estimates approximately 1.6% to 3% of
00:47:01
self-inflicted deaths were performed
00:47:03
with a bladed weapon for example a
00:47:06
30-year-old man was found dead in his
00:47:08
flat with more than 40 stab wounds to
00:47:10
his neck chest and abdomen these wounds
00:47:13
were arranged in isolated groups within
00:47:16
which they showed similar directions and
00:47:18
had a transverse orientation it appeared
00:47:21
that like Sam the man consumed cocaine
00:47:24
and all of his wounds were
00:47:25
self-inflicted
00:47:27
another example is that of a 72-year-old
00:47:29
woman who was found dead in her bedroom
00:47:31
with a 4 cm vertical stab wound in the
00:47:34
abdomen similar to Sam's a blood covered
00:47:37
knife was found in the top drawer of her
00:47:39
bedside table along with blood stains in
00:47:42
every room of her apartment consistent
00:47:44
with longlasting physical activity after
00:47:47
self-stabbing in another shocking case a
00:47:50
44-year-old man stabbed himself in the
00:47:52
heart with a kitchen knife and then ate
00:47:55
lunch with his aunt before dying dying
00:47:57
research shows that death can be delayed
00:48:00
after vascular trauma like Sam's so it's
00:48:02
nearly impossible to be precise about
00:48:04
the estimated length of survival time
00:48:06
following fatal injuries like hers an
00:48:10
unusually shaped blood stain found near
00:48:12
Sam's body seemed to mimic that of the
00:48:14
large knife suggesting the blade may
00:48:17
have fallen beside her right hand but
00:48:19
court documents argue that the blood
00:48:21
staining question came from Sam's right
00:48:23
hand which smeared across the floor as
00:48:25
First Responders moved her body to
00:48:27
render aid but in spite of conflicting
00:48:30
evidence and research it's still the
00:48:32
medical examiner's opinion that fonte
00:48:34
story doesn't completely add up fonte
00:48:37
argues that there's more to this scene
00:48:39
than meets the eye if I was the one who
00:48:43
grabbed a knife why would Samantha
00:48:45
switch places with me and put herself
00:48:47
into a corner I actually had another
00:48:49
expert uh his name was Dr Brad Randall
00:48:52
of Dakota forensics he explained that
00:48:56
these were a offensive ones and not
00:48:57
defensive bounds because they were on
00:48:59
Sam's ring and pinky finger only and
00:49:02
that uh defensive ones are typically Pok
00:49:04
and slashes on the forearms or if
00:49:06
they're on the hands it's usually on the
00:49:09
palm or pointer and middle fingers from
00:49:11
them trying to grab the blade and defend
00:49:13
themselves Dr Brad Randall explained
00:49:16
that the cuts on those two fingers were
00:49:18
caused by Samantha dabbing herself with
00:49:21
the blade facing down and the knife
00:49:23
slips when she makes contact with
00:49:25
herself thus cutting her ring TIY
00:49:28
fingers only and a diagonal cut in line
00:49:30
with fonte statements the medical
00:49:32
examiner actually acknowledged that
00:49:34
someone else might have ruled Sam's
00:49:36
death as self-inflicted or undetermined
00:49:40
in fact a second forensic pathologist
00:49:42
brought onto the case disagreed with
00:49:44
some of the medical examiner findings
00:49:46
and specified that they believe the
00:49:48
manner of death was
00:49:50
self-inflicted we requested the autopsy
00:49:52
report so that our team's certified
00:49:54
crime scene investigator could review it
00:49:56
but we were denied at every turn we
00:50:00
received a vague report but any officer
00:50:02
reports and crime scene technician
00:50:04
reports were missing though the autopsy
00:50:07
would have been extremely helpful to
00:50:08
create a better picture of what happened
00:50:10
that night the officer reports and crime
00:50:13
scene reports paint the best picture
00:50:15
they describe what the investigators did
00:50:17
or didn't do at the scene and these
00:50:20
things are especially significant in the
00:50:22
case of a suspicious death they also
00:50:24
helped to back up facts around an
00:50:27
investigation something that'll become
00:50:29
extremely important by the end of this
00:50:30
video as we continue the investigation
00:50:33
despite being denied access to many
00:50:36
reports and what we uncovered is truly
00:50:40
shocking understandably every last
00:50:42
detail of the case is under a microscope
00:50:44
according to fonte a major area of
00:50:47
contention involved his initial
00:50:48
conversations with police where he
00:50:50
claimed Sam had been stabbed in the
00:50:52
stomach rather than the chest while it's
00:50:55
worth looking into any consistencies in
00:50:57
this story as fonte says Sam was wearing
00:51:00
a loose sweatshirt making it difficult
00:51:02
to tell exactly where her wound was
00:51:04
located when she stabbed herself she
00:51:07
immediately collapsed and didn't make
00:51:09
any noise she didn't scream or anything
00:51:11
at all she just turned around looked
00:51:14
right at me and and did it like I had no
00:51:17
idea she even seen that com or I I
00:51:20
didn't see that coming I had no idea
00:51:22
that she was about to do that at all
00:51:25
fonte doesn't dispute how strange things
00:51:27
appear instead he offers what he
00:51:29
considers grounds for reasonable doubt
00:51:32
it's probably is a little hard to
00:51:33
believe that someone would choose that
00:51:36
way to stab themselves it happened and
00:51:39
just because something's uncommon and
00:51:41
that it's impossible or that it it it
00:51:43
didn't happen she left a bloody
00:51:45
fingerprint near the handle and the
00:51:48
state said that there wasn't enough Rich
00:51:51
detail tell if print was made by
00:51:54
Samantha's uh fingerprint or mind
00:51:56
Samantha had two cuts on her ring and
00:51:58
pinky fingers only so obviously the
00:52:02
bloody fingerprint was made by her hand
00:52:04
and not mine that was a big thing in the
00:52:06
trial that they said that they don't
00:52:08
know whose fingerprint that was this is
00:52:10
the kind of thing that the officer
00:52:12
reports and crime scene reports would be
00:52:14
able to shed some light on if we hadn't
00:52:16
been denied access to them the reports
00:52:18
would detail if the investigators used
00:52:20
any chemicals to attempt to enhance the
00:52:22
print in blood there's a few common
00:52:25
chemicals that can enhance faint traces
00:52:27
of blood without destroying DNA so they
00:52:30
have no excuse not to use those for
00:52:32
example they could have used a chemical
00:52:34
called aquous Amo black a water-based
00:52:37
protein Dy stain that enhances faint
00:52:40
traces of blood typically used for
00:52:42
development of latent or patent prints
00:52:45
this could have helped to determine
00:52:46
whose finger the print actually belonged
00:52:48
to something crucial to the case the
00:52:51
police swabbed all the sinks and
00:52:53
bathtubs and they found that I didn't
00:52:56
wash my hands or anything like that
00:52:59
there was no gloves found it's also
00:53:01
worth noting what appears to be the same
00:53:03
hoodie fonte was wearing earlier as seen
00:53:05
on CCTV was found in the house however
00:53:08
it doesn't appear that it was even
00:53:10
collected as evidence or tested for
00:53:12
blood residue if I was the one who
00:53:16
stabed Samantha I would need to be very
00:53:18
very close to her but the blood spatter
00:53:20
on the floor was very much Out Of Reach
00:53:23
and distance from Samantha's body so if
00:53:26
I was in fact the one holding the knife
00:53:28
how would that blood spatter on the
00:53:30
floor several feet away be behind me it
00:53:33
would have hit me and it would have been
00:53:34
on my t-shirt there was no forensic
00:53:37
evidence found to show that fonte ever
00:53:39
touched the knife a blood spatter expert
00:53:42
also stated that the small amount of
00:53:44
blood on font's t-shirt could have been
00:53:46
deposited even if he was standing 10 ft
00:53:48
away from Sam as for the location of the
00:53:51
knife there's no clear answers only
00:53:55
questions yes to this day I do not know
00:53:58
I mean when I was calling 911 I know
00:54:00
that I was running back and forth we
00:54:02
talked about maybe did I kick it I I I
00:54:05
don't believe that I kicked it 8 to 10 F
00:54:08
feet is a distance but it's it's not you
00:54:10
know extremely far you know it could
00:54:12
have could have bounced or anything like
00:54:14
that it was on like a tile floor we also
00:54:17
discussed the possibility of when the
00:54:20
paramics came in they said that the
00:54:22
scene was very chaotic and I wondered if
00:54:25
maybe one of them accidentally kicked it
00:54:27
too you know a lot of different things
00:54:29
could have happened in any case police
00:54:31
weren't willing to let fonte leave
00:54:33
interrogation without more answers
00:54:36
better thank my mom you guys better
00:54:38
thank my mom I'm going nut to rest me
00:54:40
okay we're not you right now yeah I just
00:54:42
want to put these on just so okay just
00:54:44
so we can go get some fresh hair okay
00:54:47
yep now keep in mind right now you're
00:54:49
not under arrest okay you're making me
00:54:52
feel like it somebody just K because me
00:54:55
I'm explaining you put me in
00:54:57
handcuff man can you my hands I promise
00:55:00
I don't do nothing just we got it this I
00:55:03
know I I I was freaking out come on man
00:55:06
please you're bigger than
00:55:08
me why did she do that man that you're
00:55:13
so selfish
00:55:15
dude you really hit me yet you know what
00:55:17
I mean no I see no
00:55:24
dude m
00:55:27
as shocking as this case has been so far
00:55:30
most of the twists have yet to be
00:55:32
revealed including a neverbe her
00:55:34
interview things are about to really go
00:55:37
off the rails
00:55:39
[Applause]
00:55:53
[Applause]
00:56:07
please wake up wake
00:56:11
up
00:56:16
please come on man when an officer
00:56:19
returns to keep an eye on fonte he
00:56:21
continues to ramble I don't even know
00:56:24
why she did that like
00:56:27
she has some issues but like nothing
00:56:30
like that but the like been eight months
00:56:33
you know what I mean like like
00:56:38
what what can I like
00:56:43
possibly I've never sure it wasn't you
00:56:46
someone someone's going to do that to
00:56:48
themselves you know that's kind of why
00:56:50
have to on me like I'm I'm so good from
00:56:54
here like I'm so connected with her
00:56:56
family and her sister and I I'll never I
00:57:01
always feel like this is my
00:57:03
fault she's dead
00:57:05
man I know she's not mean
00:57:09
to she be looking like
00:57:12
Sal fonte inspects his reflection in the
00:57:14
window to get a closer look at his
00:57:16
injuries but can't resist yet another
00:57:19
interesting comment this time about the
00:57:22
blood stains on his
00:57:24
shirt oh yeah she did get me huh damn I
00:57:29
even know I heard you guys talking about
00:57:30
it but I didn't really see
00:57:33
yeah maybe that's
00:57:39
my me no matter what fonte says police
00:57:44
have already found some shocking
00:57:45
evidence in the most unlikely of places
00:57:48
font's own cell phone the following clip
00:57:51
is just minutes before Sam's death when
00:57:54
fonte recorded a video that partially
00:57:56
documents their disagreement but it's
00:57:59
what police don't see that raises the
00:58:01
most
00:58:02
suspicion
00:58:03
stupid sting here get out my house
00:58:09
please get out my house please yep
00:58:12
seriously get out of here get the rest
00:58:15
of the
00:58:17
stuff don't get dumb okay don't ever get
00:58:20
DB you can get out right now think
00:58:23
you're tough of your boyfriend that you
00:58:25
had I'm not not a one in this video
00:58:28
there were no visible injuries to Sam's
00:58:30
nose and forehead suggesting she
00:58:32
sustained them right before she died
00:58:35
while this video looks damning to some
00:58:37
font's friends and family noticed
00:58:39
something different instead of damning
00:58:42
proof of an attack they see it as
00:58:44
grounds for Reasonable Doubt when Sam
00:58:46
comes running at him and he's laughing
00:58:49
and he's
00:58:51
saying I'm not your exboyfriend I would
00:58:54
I won't I don't hurt girls I I don't do
00:58:57
that like I'm not him but the abrupt end
00:58:59
to the video left many wondering what
00:59:01
wasn't documented and why it cut off so
00:59:05
suddenly the phone that I had you had to
00:59:07
like hold the button to like record it
00:59:10
kind of like a snatch kind of scenario
00:59:13
when she came at me she she first
00:59:16
punched me in the face and I just
00:59:18
dropped the phone to be honest I'm not
00:59:20
sure why I started recording it and I
00:59:23
think I just wanted her to leave knew
00:59:26
that probably was going to irritate her
00:59:29
meanwhile the disbelief some of Sam's
00:59:31
Family First felt about font's guilt
00:59:33
gradually began to shift after the
00:59:36
evidence came out it it all made sense
00:59:39
and I completely believe that he did it
00:59:42
font's interrogation ends soon after but
00:59:45
just before officers take him away he
00:59:48
leaves authorities with some Curious
00:59:50
final
00:59:51
words what could seriously happen worse
00:59:54
than those
00:59:57
you have something let me know that's
01:00:00
pretty bad I'll never forgive myself
01:00:03
despite his interrogation coming to an
01:00:05
end some of the most shocking details
01:00:07
were yet to be uncovered ultimately the
01:00:10
impact of Sam's death would be vast
01:00:13
transforming the lives of countless
01:00:15
friends and family members entirely yeah
01:00:17
so the evening that Samantha passed away
01:00:20
you know is one that will always be in
01:00:21
my mind it's a tragedy like I said
01:00:23
Samantha was a young girl she was 21
01:00:25
years old
01:00:26
fonte was arrested for murder in the
01:00:28
first degree but it was at trial where
01:00:31
more was revealed about what may have
01:00:33
happened that night and even more twists
01:00:35
in this already shocking case fonte lied
01:00:39
to police when he told them he
01:00:40
immediately called 911 phone records
01:00:43
indicate fonte made another call first
01:00:46
to his friend and housemate BK who also
01:00:48
owned the home he lived in with Sam
01:00:51
along with a sobering reminder fonte
01:00:54
offers a glimpse into why he may that
01:00:56
choice I didn't know what to do I
01:00:58
immediately I I called him and it rang
01:01:01
for a couple seconds and then I I guess
01:01:03
I was just panicking and then I
01:01:05
immediately called 911 I've never called
01:01:06
911 I've never been in a situation to
01:01:09
call 911 like I didn't know what to do I
01:01:12
just remember realizing that that was
01:01:14
you know that wouldn't help and that's
01:01:16
when I called 911 when people say oh you
01:01:18
should have did this or you should have
01:01:20
did that like you don't know what you
01:01:22
would do when you get into a situation
01:01:24
like that when something like that
01:01:25
happen happens you just I don't know you
01:01:27
kind of
01:01:29
just react however according to court
01:01:32
briefs fonte allegedly said to an
01:01:34
officer I thought that was dead when we
01:01:37
reviewed the interrogation we did not
01:01:39
hear fonte say this in the officer's
01:01:41
presence but rather I thought she was do
01:01:44
even so font's loved ones feel he wasn't
01:01:47
granted a fair shot at Justice frankly
01:01:50
there were a lot of things that took
01:01:52
place in this trial that will make you
01:01:53
raise your eyebrows and he isn't kidding
01:01:56
through our own investigation into this
01:01:58
Twisted case we uncovered even more
01:02:00
unbelievable details including a
01:02:02
shocking never beard interview with a
01:02:05
jury member innocent till proven guilty
01:02:08
just didn't seem like much of the case
01:02:09
here like I understand how hard it is
01:02:12
like wrap your head around somebody
01:02:13
doing that to themselves but the lack of
01:02:15
investigating before charging him forced
01:02:18
their hand to kind of do whatever it
01:02:20
takes to save face fonte stands firm in
01:02:22
his belief that authorities had their
01:02:24
minds made up about him they completely
01:02:27
didn't believe me from the very
01:02:29
beginning they immediately assumed that
01:02:33
this was a homicide they did no
01:02:35
investigation whatsoever we spoke to a
01:02:37
verified Source deeply involved with the
01:02:39
case they wish to remain anonymous in
01:02:42
order to avoid putting their business at
01:02:43
risk allegedly when they raised
01:02:46
questions about the nature of Sam's
01:02:47
wounds the police followed this person
01:02:50
and warned them to back off they also
01:02:53
claimed that the town of debuk Iowa is
01:02:55
allegedly corrupt and MOB run he
01:02:58
actually ended up being uh followed by
01:03:00
uh one of the police officers and he
01:03:02
ended up pulling over and having a
01:03:04
conversation with him according to fonte
01:03:07
Sam also showed a predisposition toward
01:03:10
violent acts and allegedly had a history
01:03:12
that contradicts her older sister's
01:03:14
statements about Sam's passive nature he
01:03:17
shares his recollection of an alleged
01:03:19
fight between Sam and Cassie Sam's
01:03:22
actually beaten her up multiple times on
01:03:25
record Cassie actually had to lock
01:03:27
herself into her own room in her own
01:03:29
house and she busted down the door and
01:03:31
beat her up I mean there's a lot of
01:03:33
times where she was conf we asked Cassie
01:03:36
about this alleged incident and she had
01:03:38
this to say quote nothing like that ever
01:03:42
happened when fonte was around I believe
01:03:44
he's trying to make Sam look like the
01:03:46
bad person in this story Sam and I
01:03:49
argued at times like sisters do but we
01:03:51
were always very close and didn't fight
01:03:53
often she got physical me once but fonte
01:03:57
wasn't there at trial Sam's mental
01:04:00
health records were excluded as evidence
01:04:03
font's friend Ricky shared more about
01:04:05
the trial fonte had to wave his right
01:04:08
between either a speedy trial or being
01:04:12
able to cross-examine all the jurors he
01:04:15
had to pick one you have the right to
01:04:16
both you know um so that was weird court
01:04:19
documents indicate that the judge Monica
01:04:22
akley required fonte to either wave his
01:04:24
right to a speedy trial or wave his
01:04:27
objection to the racial distribution of
01:04:29
the all-white jury during jury
01:04:32
deliberations a court officer stated
01:04:34
that the jurors were arguing so loudly
01:04:36
they could hear them from outside the
01:04:38
Jury Room in an exclusive ewo interview
01:04:41
Andrew a holdout juror explained his
01:04:44
position and upon reflection Andrew
01:04:46
didn't think things looked good for
01:04:48
fonte before the jury was even selected
01:04:50
I looked around the room there's like
01:04:53
200 or a little more than 200 people to
01:04:56
from from a jury pool I said he's the
01:04:58
only black person in this room Andrew
01:05:00
admits he was initially very skeptical
01:05:02
of fonte but he was willing to keep an
01:05:05
open mind a lot of people just assumed
01:05:08
like I did you know when I saw that
01:05:09
there was a dead girl and he's being
01:05:12
accused of stabbing her and I'm like oh
01:05:14
yeah he killed her after that first day
01:05:16
of trial I said I believe you killed her
01:05:18
Lord but I I said I'll give him the
01:05:20
benefit of the doubt I'll pay attention
01:05:22
to what goes on in the trial and we'll
01:05:25
go from there as the trial went on I
01:05:28
became less and less convinced that he
01:05:29
actually killed her Andrew's Logic the
01:05:32
evidence presented wasn't compelling
01:05:34
enough to say anything for certain among
01:05:36
other things he took issue with some of
01:05:38
Sam's injuries so the guy that did the
01:05:41
autopsy when they asked him about the
01:05:43
cuts on his hand he didn't explain it he
01:05:45
just said those are defensive wounds and
01:05:47
when I saw where the cuts were on her
01:05:49
fingers I was like that's not consistent
01:05:52
with him stabbing her you know if you're
01:05:55
being stabbed the chest your hands are
01:05:57
going to instinctively fly in front of
01:05:58
your chest to try and block the knife
01:06:01
you would have cuts on your hands other
01:06:03
than where she had those cuts see he
01:06:06
just dismissed it out of hand I'm like
01:06:08
well you didn't think that through very
01:06:09
much I mean it this was a serious matter
01:06:13
there was a dead girl and he's being
01:06:15
accused of murder and you know I I took
01:06:17
it very seriously and according to
01:06:20
Andrew the judge left no question as to
01:06:22
what the jurors were charged with
01:06:24
deciding it was made very clear that uh
01:06:27
if you have Reasonable Doubt then you
01:06:29
cannot convict but allegedly any sense
01:06:32
of cooperation among the jurors quickly
01:06:34
dissipated at the first sign of conflict
01:06:37
I told the other jurors I said you know
01:06:39
I've paid very close attention to what's
01:06:42
been going on in there and I I said
01:06:44
based upon everything I've seen and
01:06:46
heard I can't convict this man and
01:06:49
that's when immediately the other juror
01:06:51
said well if everybody's like you then
01:06:54
nobody would be in prison and right
01:06:56
there they set the tone for the rest of
01:06:57
that deliberation and that's when I
01:07:00
started to become let them know that I
01:07:02
just wasn't going to tolerate being
01:07:03
disrespected like that bullied
01:07:06
intimidated because that's ultimately
01:07:07
what they were trying to do to me but
01:07:09
Andrew's experience went far beyond
01:07:11
working through differences in opinion
01:07:13
he says some other jurors were downright
01:07:16
antagonistic two of them were attacking
01:07:18
me and the other girl who wasn't going
01:07:20
to convict they didn't treat her the way
01:07:22
they treated me you know they would ask
01:07:24
her questions why why do you think this
01:07:26
why that they were not civilized towards
01:07:28
me at one point we were like we're not
01:07:30
going to agree on this let's tell the
01:07:32
judge that it's a hung jury but the
01:07:35
judge was like nope keep at it keep at
01:07:37
it keep at it after the confrontation
01:07:39
you know it just became a very hostile
01:07:42
room to be in one female juror was
01:07:44
actually crying because of all the
01:07:45
hostility in there they were absolutely
01:07:47
determined to throw him into prison and
01:07:50
they weren't going to be persuaded
01:07:52
eventually some of Andrew's fellow
01:07:53
jurors allegedly accused him of not
01:07:55
honoring his oath as a juror and this is
01:07:58
where font's case takes another
01:08:00
appalling turn that Friday before we
01:08:03
were dismissed for the weekend the judge
01:08:05
pulled all of us into the courtroom and
01:08:07
admonished all of us that we have a
01:08:08
responsibility as jurors to deliberate
01:08:11
well that Saturday the next day I wrote
01:08:14
that note to the judge and then had it
01:08:17
presented to her the next Monday I asked
01:08:19
the attendant if she gave the judge the
01:08:21
letter and she said yes I did and she
01:08:24
read it knowns to me the judge sent a
01:08:28
note to the jury Foreman asking for my
01:08:30
identity and they gave her my name
01:08:33
without my knowledge of this happening
01:08:35
reading that note you can tell I was not
01:08:38
going to convict him I was not going to
01:08:40
let the other jurors bully me into
01:08:42
making a decision I didn't feel was
01:08:44
right she told the the prosecutor and
01:08:46
the defense attorney that she decided to
01:08:49
have me removed from the jury before she
01:08:52
read that note and I know that that's a
01:08:54
blatant lie she lied to the prosecution
01:08:57
and the defense that note is why she
01:09:00
kicked me off that jury because that
01:09:02
judge wanted a a guilty verdict and she
01:09:05
purposely manipulated that verdict
01:09:08
according to Andrew the way he was
01:09:10
treated had a ripple effect on other
01:09:12
members of the jury the defense attorney
01:09:15
asked me what had happened and I told
01:09:17
him they said would you be willing to
01:09:18
come in and sign a sworn affidavit to
01:09:20
what happened and I said absolutely and
01:09:23
the other girl who had changed her
01:09:24
verdict out of fear she had told them
01:09:28
that the judge came in there after
01:09:29
kicking me out threatening to prosecute
01:09:32
me and stuff like that she said after
01:09:34
what they did to Andrew she said I'm a
01:09:36
single mom I don't need that kind of
01:09:38
trouble so I changed my verdict just to
01:09:40
protect myself which is exactly what
01:09:43
that judge wanted ultimately after
01:09:45
Andrew was ousted from the jury his
01:09:47
replacement as well as the remaining
01:09:49
jurors voted to convict fonte of Murder
01:09:51
in the second degree in 2018 he was sent
01:09:55
to 50 years in prison we reached out to
01:09:58
judge akley for comment but didn't hear
01:10:00
back we also reached out to the other
01:10:02
jurors but they declined to be
01:10:04
interviewed in 2020 the Supreme Court
01:10:07
agreed to give the case a second look
01:10:10
the first judgment was reversed granting
01:10:12
fonte a new trial but font's victory was
01:10:15
short-lived Andrew noticed a similar
01:10:18
theme with the second trial which was
01:10:20
presided over by the same judge
01:10:22
investigator who had talked to me I told
01:10:24
him I said if there's no black jurors on
01:10:26
that jury he's going to get convicted
01:10:29
again he told me he said there was it
01:10:30
was an all-h jury again once again you
01:10:33
had a bunch of jurors who were not going
01:10:35
to be persuaded that he did not kill her
01:10:37
as far as they were concerned he's
01:10:39
guilty throw him in prison unless be
01:10:41
done with it you know I hadn't had a lot
01:10:44
of faith in the justice system anyway
01:10:46
but that pretty much just destroyed it
01:10:48
after the second jury deliberated for
01:10:50
over 6 hours fonte was convicted of
01:10:52
second deegree murder once again perhaps
01:10:56
coincidentally judge Monica akley has
01:10:58
come under public scrutiny for recent
01:11:00
rulings including the decision to allow
01:11:02
a former police officer convicted of
01:11:04
assault go without prison time for a
01:11:07
third deegree attack on a 14-year-old
01:11:10
girl one media Source also highlights
01:11:13
judge akley's low performance scores and
01:11:15
the Iowa Bar association's review for
01:11:17
judges in any case fonte doesn't hide
01:11:20
that the system is wearing on him the
01:11:23
reason I got my case over returned and
01:11:26
the reason that I feel like we're here
01:11:27
today is because it's seriously so
01:11:30
unbelievable how I got convicted twice
01:11:33
obviously Sam and I had both been using
01:11:35
drugs and alcohol that night I blew a 11
01:11:39
and she blew
01:11:41
a24 like along with ganx adderal
01:11:44
anti-depressants and all that like she
01:11:47
also had like the ability to not feel
01:11:50
pain from all that on the day before
01:11:52
Samantha's death she seen her doctor and
01:11:55
he reported on record saying that
01:11:58
Samantha had been feeling much better
01:12:00
since being with me and had no thoughts
01:12:03
about but on that exact same day my
01:12:07
investigators found text messages on her
01:12:10
phone saying that she just tells her
01:12:12
doctor what he wants to hear so she can
01:12:15
get her anx and out and get out of there
01:12:18
and I just feel like I've been a
01:12:20
nightmare for seven years sadly after
01:12:23
his second trial f 's mother passed away
01:12:26
from breast cancer but she was a fierce
01:12:29
advocate for her son until her last day
01:12:32
she never would give
01:12:33
up no and she'd go to see no matter how
01:12:37
sick she was you'd always go every other
01:12:40
week and see him and she would be in the
01:12:44
car until she couldn't be I would be
01:12:47
just the
01:12:48
happiest happiest person in the world if
01:12:51
he could come home right now it would
01:12:53
just make it would just make my day so
01:12:56
much brighter just to see him and have
01:12:59
him home after two appeals fonte still
01:13:02
hasn't given up hope and is working with
01:13:04
his legal team for another shot but for
01:13:07
now those who Lov Sam are focused on
01:13:09
keeping her Legacy alive uh my second
01:13:12
born his name is Leo because Sam was a
01:13:16
Leo some of Sam and Cassie's relatives
01:13:19
were in the background of the interview
01:13:21
listening in though not on camera they
01:13:23
began to argue and the the interview
01:13:25
ended abruptly shortly after we asked
01:13:28
Cassie about this later and she
01:13:30
explained that her family was upset over
01:13:32
the fact that Sam's not here to quote
01:13:34
talk for herself so fonte gets the
01:13:36
benefit of saying whatever to make her
01:13:38
look bad it's been s years and yet here
01:13:41
we are still having to deal with fonte
01:13:43
trying and doing anything he can to get
01:13:45
away with murder we gave Cassie the
01:13:48
opportunity to address font's other
01:13:50
comments without her family present but
01:13:52
we didn't hear back from her s 's bride
01:13:55
and caring spirit will not be forgotten
01:13:59
and as for fonte time will only tell
01:14:01
what comes next
