You’re The Cream In My Coffee [Süß wie Kaffeesahne] Fox-trot (Sylva-Brown-Henderson) [from the Musical Comedy “Hold Everything”] - Ben Berlin m.s. Orchester, Grammophon 1929 (Germany) NOTE: Ben BERLIN (né Hermann Biek, 1896 in Tallinn, Estonia – d. 1944 in London, UK) - Estonian jazz and entertainment musician (piano, composition, arrangement) and a dance band leader. Born to a Jewish family (his father Moische Biek was a bookbinder) Ben Berlin in his teen years of age performed as a pianist in Tallinn. After graduating from school in 1913, he studied at the Conservatory in St. Petersburg, Russia (piano, composition and conducting) and he stayed for a while in Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution of 1917 becouse of getting married. In 1920 they decided to move to Tallin, where Ben started working as a composer with a little chance to make it a solid livelihood. In 1925 the couple moved to Berlin where after one year, Ben got position at the Vox recording company as artistic director, pianist and arranger and he was one of enthusuiasts of new trends in dance music, promotong various dance-jazz bands which made the famous jazz-sessions for the Vox records during the mid-late 1920s (very much sought for today, by the 78 rpm collectors throughout Europe). In 1928, having renamed himself as “Ben Berlin”, he started leading his own dance band which became popular as one more American jazz-oriented dance orchestra in Berlin. He recorded his own versions of such enormously popular American dance tunes as “Broadway Melody”, “Ain’t Misbehavin’”, “Button Up Your Overcoat”, “Can't Help Lovin' Dat Man”, “I Can't Give You Anything But Love ”,“ She's Funny That Way ”or “The Varsity Drag ”. Also, very popular were his versions of German dance hits of the day, such as “Einmal kommt das Wunder der Liebe” with Leo Monosson, „Ich hab kein Auto, ich hab kein Rittergut“ with Two Jazzers or „Ein Freund, ein guter Freund“ with Heinz Wernicke. Ben Berlin’s band reached the peak of its popularity during engagement at the Delphi Filmpalast, where the best jazz / dance bands of Berlin performed (Billy Bartholomew, Julian Fuhs and others). Ben Berlin’s good fortune was suddenly over in 1933, when the National Socialists seized power in Germany. He emigrated first to the Netherlands, later via Austria to Paris and around 1935 to London. In September / October 1934 he visited his former homeland Estonia and gave several concerts of classical music in Tallinn and Tartu, yet his musical temperament widely developed in Western Europe did not fit any more into his home town atmosphere. Ben Berlin once more tried his luck in London, where he got a job in BBC as the director of musical programs and was also active as a composer, albeit under his family name Hermann Biek. There, however, he experienced bitter disappointment, for London of the Big Band era was tightly packed with the world's best dance musicians and they did not seem to care much about an Estonian exile. He died from heart attack in 1944 at the age of 48.
