A playthrough of Fox Interactive's 2001 license-based action game for the Game Boy Color, The Simpsons: Night of the Living Treehouse of Horror. The only GBC Simpsons game takes several Simpsons Halloween specials and turns them into a rather neat (mostly) platformer. Like the 8-bit games based on the series that came before it, there is a lot of variety to be found across the stages. You'll wander around looking for objects to clear an objectives, buzz through the kitchen as a mutated Maggie fly, take on bad guys in a top down shooter lifted straight out of Super C, do some Metal Gear Solid: Lisa stealth at Springfield Elementary, amongst others. It's too bad that most of them are so short-lived though. I guess it's just my luck that my least favorite bit (robot Homer looking for his body parts) is by far the longest stage. Each of the stages do liberally "borrow" ideas from a ton of other popular franchises, so it is always cool to see what is in store next. The game plays way better than you might expect - the controls are certainly easier to come to grips with than the odd setup that the NES games had, and it's significantly easier than those three. It also looks and sounds much better than those games (Genesis and PC ports included), with tons of detail and surprisingly fluid animation. The sound will grate on your nerves after a bit, but overall, and the screen scrolling can be a bit spastic when changing directions, but overall, I can't complain too much. It's The Simpsons through-and through, and I've always had a blast with it. Hopefully you enjoy this playthrough I've put together - it's been quite awhile coming. Oh, and in case you are wondering, I got that LCD screen look by playing this through Retroarch using it's amazing shader options.
