00:00:03
How are you? I hope you are fine and that you are ready for a new Italian lesson.
00:00:10
So, today we will see some words or expressions that we can use when we don't understand something,
00:00:20
so this is our communicative situation:
00:00:24
we did not understand something that the other interlocutor told us.
00:00:29
We have to understand what communication context we are in.
00:00:34
In today's video we will see the expressions to be used in three communication contexts:
00:00:41
the formal one, therefore a context in which we would use the polite form with whom we speak;
00:00:52
an informal context in which we would give say "tu";
00:01:00
and then a familiar / colloquial context, where we can use much more relaxed expressions.
00:01:08
Obviously I want to tell you only those expressions and those sentences
00:01:14
which are widely used and which are also short, if you will.
00:01:19
Often they are just words, because when we don't understand something,
00:01:25
when we have to ask to repeat, sometimes we don't want to
00:01:31
interrupt the conversation and hold it for too long, right?
00:01:37
So we need words that make the interlocutor understand that we have not understood
00:01:45
and that, at the same time, do not block the conversation.
00:01:51
Could you repeat? Can you repeat? Repeat?
00:01:57
Could you repeat that? Can you repeat? Repeat?
00:02:02
So this is the polite form with Lei; this is informal, can you repeat?; and this is familiar / colloquial, there is only the verb "to repeat".
00:02:16
It seems a bit of an imperative form, but there is a question mark, so it's not really an imperative.
00:02:24
We say: "Repeat?". It's not "Repeat!", But it's "Repeat?", so the pitch goes upward.
00:02:33
Then, "I beg your pardon?". We find this also here,
00:02:47
but it becomes sarcastic, okay?
00:02:54
So if I say "I beg your pardon?" in an informal context
00:02:58
or familiar / colloquialit becomes sarcastic,
00:03:02
as if to say
00:03:04
"I beg your pardon?" so someone said something stupid or it could even be the beginning of a fight.
00:03:13
Ok? So I would suggest to use it only in a formal context.
00:03:22
Then we have the classic: - Sorry? - Sorry? - Sorry?
00:03:36
So "Excuse me / Sorry (Lei)?", Formal;
00:03:41
then "sorry (you)", which is repeated in an informal and also familiar / colloquial context.
00:03:48
Then we have
00:03:55
Could say it again? (She)
00:04:02
Can you say it again? (you)
00:04:05
and I would say that
00:04:07
in the familiar / colloquial there is not really an alternative related to these two, therefore we can also put nothing.
00:04:20
Could/Can you say that again?
00:04:24
Then
00:04:30
What did you say?
00:04:36
What did you say?
00:04:42
What did you say?
00:04:44
Do you see how it changes in the family / colloquial register? The "come" becomes "che", "che dici?".
00:04:53
Attention to intonation, okay? Because if I say "what are you saying?"
00:05:00
I am shocked by what is being said.
00:05:06
Instead the intonation here is different, "what did you say?" because I did not understand.
00:05:12
"Come dici?" (you)
00:05:14
"Come dice?" (She)
00:05:16
Then here we have: What?
00:05:30
Here we have: What? What?
00:05:34
So in the informal register we alternate "Come?" and "cosa?".
00:05:39
In the family / colloquial register we have "Cosa?" and "che?".
00:05:46
"Che?" is to be avoided in the formal register, because
00:05:52
it sounds a little too direct, a little rude.
00:05:56
So let's repeat all these questions.
00:05:59
Could you repeat that? Can you repeat? Repeat?
00:06:05
I beg your pardon? I beg your pardon? (sarcastic) I beg your pardon? (sarcastic)
00:06:12
Only informal and familiar / colloquial, for the formal register "I beg your pardon" is an excellent choice.
00:06:22
Sorry? Sorry? Sorry?
00:06:27
What did you say?
00:06:32
What did you say?
00:06:37
What?
00:06:45
We just saw a table where we had
00:06:49
various options for the three registers, so there were several options.
00:06:56
But now I'm going to tell you other expressions or questions
00:07:01
which are only used in the formal context and in a family / colloquial register, ok?
00:07:11
A very relaxed conversation. I write "very relaxed".
00:07:21
So, the expression or question that is used only in a formal context is:
00:07:34
I beg your pardon?
00:07:37
We find this question only in a formal context, we don't have
00:07:43
alternatives for the other two contexts.
00:07:48
Therefore: I beg your pardon?
00:07:50
it is formal, very elegant.
00:07:53
As for the expressions that we can only use in a family / colloquial register,
00:08:02
therefore when the conversation is very relaxed, when the communicative context is very relaxed.
00:08:11
We have: What did you say?
00:08:15
Attention to intonation,
00:08:18
because if I say "what did you say?"
00:08:23
I sound angry, because I understood very well what was said, simply - let's say -
00:08:32
I want the person to repeat because maybe the they won't repeat that same thing.
00:08:39
Instead in this case, "what did you say ?, I did not understand,
00:08:44
so I simply ask to repeat.
00:08:47
And then we have sounds.
00:08:59
These two sounds are used only in a very relaxed family / colloquial context.
00:09:07
That's because, you see? They are not even words, they are sounds.
00:09:11
Therefore: Hmm? Eh?
00:09:14
These used in a formal context,
00:09:19
could be very rude.
00:09:22
So that's all for today.
00:09:25
I hope this video is useful to you, I hope you will use all this information
00:09:31
in your conversations
00:09:33
or in real life anyway.
