Под руководством учёного Виктора Барисова на острове основали научный комплекс Каторга-12. За свои исследования Барисов был награждён орденом Ленина. Хрущёв, сменивший Сталина, приказал ускорить испытания Е-99. Однако вещество оказалось крайне нестабильным, и в результате катастрофы на острове никто не выжил. СССР засекретил все упоминания о Каторге-12 и закрыл проект. В 2010 году американский спутник обнаруживает радиоактивный выброс в районе Охотского моря. Обеспокоенные молчанием Москвы и опасаясь повторения Чернобыля, в подозрительный район направляется разведгруппа Морской пехоты США.
