00:00:00
hey everyone so I want to show you guys
00:00:03
some innovative ways to add texture to
00:00:05
your hand building projects now we can
00:00:08
all make lovely pieces and glaze them
00:00:09
beautifully but sometimes we want to add
00:00:11
a little bit more to the surface so here
00:00:14
I have some things that I use to get
00:00:16
texture and I'm going to show you how I
00:00:17
use each one and I'm also going to show
00:00:19
you what I use for a release agent
00:00:20
because some of these do tend to stick
00:00:22
to the clay so first I'm going to start
00:00:24
off describing what I'm using so I have
00:00:28
this wooden roller this is an embossed
00:00:30
roller these are gorgeous it's deeply
00:00:32
carved this is a very well-made one so
00:00:34
they cost a little bit more but they're
00:00:36
well worth it this is an investment
00:00:37
you're gonna have in your studio for a
00:00:39
long long time and then next and I have
00:00:41
a similar ruler but it's plastic it
00:00:44
works really well it does tend to stick
00:00:46
and they're much much cheaper being
00:00:48
plastic they're rather breakable so
00:00:50
something to think about now another
00:00:52
thing you might not have tried are these
00:00:54
silicone fondant molds so these will be
00:00:57
in your baking aisle of your hobby or
00:00:59
craft store and they're meant to be used
00:01:02
in baking you put fondant icing in them
00:01:04
but we can put our clay in it and create
00:01:07
some fabulous textures why should the
00:01:09
Baker's have all the fun and then this
00:01:12
little cutie this is just a little
00:01:14
wooden cutout that I got the craft store
00:01:16
and these make fantastic textures I love
00:01:18
these and then doilies you might have
00:01:21
tried doilies or lace curtains but if
00:01:23
you haven't just look around your house
00:01:25
I bet you have one these are so nice for
00:01:27
texture and then last leaves just step
00:01:31
outside your door there's leaves
00:01:33
everywhere here where I live in New
00:01:35
England there's always leaves on the
00:01:37
ground no matter what time of year even
00:01:38
in the winter under the snow you will
00:01:40
find some leaves alright so let's get
00:01:42
started and see what these look like in
00:01:43
the clay put all of my texturing tools
00:01:47
to the side and let's get started so I'm
00:01:51
gonna start I have these two slabs right
00:01:53
here but I've already rolled out and
00:01:56
these are actually gonna be little
00:01:57
pictures little creamers and I'm gonna
00:02:00
show you both types I'm going to show
00:02:02
you a texture using the silicon fondant
00:02:04
mold first and then I'm gonna show you
00:02:07
how I get texture let's see what she
00:02:09
would use next I guess we can use the
00:02:10
wooden roller that's it that's
00:02:12
nice one all right so what I use for a
00:02:14
release agent for this is pretty simple
00:02:17
nonstick cooking spray Oh hide the brand
00:02:20
it doesn't matter what brand you use and
00:02:21
all I do is shake it up and then you're
00:02:25
gonna take your silicone mold maybe do
00:02:28
it outside or over some paper or
00:02:29
something because wherever the overspray
00:02:31
hits it will be a bit slippery but for
00:02:33
demonstration purposes I'm just gonna
00:02:35
show you guys right here and I'm just
00:02:37
gonna liberally apply it then you're
00:02:42
gonna lay this on the clay now I've
00:02:45
pre-cut these slabs because I know what
00:02:47
shape I'm making so I know where I want
00:02:49
my texture so once you have that on
00:02:51
there the next step is you're just gonna
00:02:53
take a rolling pin and now that we have
00:02:58
it on there we're just going to press down and as I pressed you'll see the
00:03:01
fondant mold come up a little bit and
00:03:03
try to wiggle but just keep going nice
00:03:05
and steady and then ready I'll peel it
00:03:09
up right there gorgeous texture so fast
00:03:13
so easy look at this it doesn't get much
00:03:17
better than that does it so that's how
00:03:20
simple that can be and of course this is
00:03:22
a bigger piece than one strip these tend
00:03:25
to be long and narrow so what I always
00:03:27
do I just I just put another strip on
00:03:31
line that up and then I just roll it
00:03:34
again just like that
00:03:38
and then I pull it off that's what I'll
00:03:41
cut my template out and then I'll have
00:03:42
my shape now for the other one that I
00:03:46
have right here we're just gonna use a
00:03:48
wooden mold this is for baking cookies
00:03:51
this emboss roller I'm sorry I called it
00:03:54
a mold it's an embossed roller and I do
00:03:56
not put a release agent on the wooden
00:03:58
ones they don't tend to stick if you
00:04:00
find they're sticking for you go ahead
00:04:02
and use a release agent but I don't I
00:04:04
don't I haven't seen the need for that
00:04:06
so let's go ahead now sometimes when you
00:04:09
first start the edge is gonna try to
00:04:10
stick back here just release and start
00:04:13
again if that happens so just rolled
00:04:15
that out I'm going to show you that
00:04:18
texture so you can see right there so
00:04:21
this Paisley design so nice and then
00:04:25
there's our fondant silicone mold right
00:04:29
so there's two ways now let's keep going
00:04:32
I have some more slabs I conveniently
00:04:34
already rolled out for you guys let's
00:04:37
skip ahead and use the plastic emboss
00:04:43
roller so I treat these just like the
00:04:45
silicone a little molds there and I just
00:04:49
squirt it with a bit of nonstick cooking
00:04:51
spray and then we'll just roll it right
00:04:54
out just line it up and just roll it now
00:04:57
you can roll by the ends or you can just
00:04:59
put your hand in the middle do not worry
00:05:01
this nonstick cooking spray will not
00:05:03
hurt your clay and if your rollers get
00:05:06
gummed up over time just wash them in
00:05:08
some warm soapy water and they'll be
00:05:09
fine
00:05:10
so right there one side done look at
00:05:13
fields of texture texture for days and
00:05:17
then the other side we're gonna go ahead
00:05:19
and use this little guy and to press
00:05:22
this in all I do is I put it on my clay
00:05:25
and let me just I just press down with
00:05:27
the heel of my palm just like that when
00:05:31
I pop it up so I'll do this in a random
00:05:34
pattern all over just like that
00:05:43
now you can get these in all different
00:05:45
sizes and shapes with so many patterns I
00:05:47
was in the hobby store the other day and
00:05:49
the Christmas stuffs out so if you're
00:05:52
into like making things holiday themed
00:05:54
there's a lot of little wooden holiday
00:05:56
themed things happening so there we have
00:05:59
that texture this is a beautiful texture
00:06:03
so that's another way actually two more
00:06:07
ways so for now let's get into something
00:06:11
a little different so here we have a big
00:06:14
slab we're gonna go ahead and roll this
00:06:17
leaf now for leaves I don't use a
00:06:20
release agent it doesn't stick it's just
00:06:22
just a leaf so I'm gonna give you a
00:06:24
little tip hosta leaves you kind of got
00:06:27
to flatten the stem a bit or else
00:06:29
they'll crush down into your clay so I'm
00:06:32
just gonna put this on vein side down
00:06:35
and then with my rolling pin I'm just
00:06:38
gonna push that in there back and forth
00:06:41
a few times you want to really get it in
00:06:44
there and then all I do is just grab a
00:06:48
corner here with a needle tool and very
00:06:51
gently pull up now you can leave this in
00:06:55
the clay it will burn out in your kiln
00:06:57
but I like to reuse leaves over and over
00:07:00
so there is a hosta leaf it's subtle
00:07:04
it's beautiful and then last I'm gonna
00:07:09
show you is using duei leaves and again
00:07:14
the fabric will not stick to the clay so
00:07:17
you do not need a release agent so I'm
00:07:19
just gonna put this in we're just gonna
00:07:20
put it right in the center just smooth
00:07:23
it down with your hands take your
00:07:25
rolling pin and just roll it in good and
00:07:28
you'll see it totally embed itself into
00:07:32
the clay and then now we're gonna lift
00:07:35
up a section I'm just gonna use my
00:07:37
needle tool come in I'm just gonna peel
00:07:41
it up it's like magic it's beautiful
00:07:46
and there we have it Julie so many
00:07:51
things you can do with all of these
00:07:53
options so if you haven't checked out
00:07:55
embossed
00:07:56
Rollers you know maybe get one and see
00:07:58
how you like it why not go down the
00:08:01
baking aisle in your craft store and
00:08:02
look for their silicone fondant molds
00:08:05
they come in so many sizes and patterns
00:08:07
you will love these they're so fun and
00:08:09
while you're there pop over into the
00:08:11
wood and accent aisle and pick yourself
00:08:13
up a couple of these they're like 50
00:08:15
cents apiece
00:08:16
they're really inexpensive you can do
00:08:18
that and then you know get a leaf or
00:08:21
maybe look in your linen closet and pull
00:08:24
out some doilies and put them in clay I
00:08:26
hope this gives you all some ideas and
00:08:28
some ways that you can add more texture
00:08:30
to your work you can have so much fun
00:08:31
adding texture and decoration to the
00:08:34
surface and it doesn't have to be hard
00:08:35
as you see here it was very simple
00:08:38
anybody can do it and I know you will
00:08:40
love it
