00:00:07
Hi there, I'm Angela Brown and this is Ask a House Cleaner.
00:00:10
This is a show where you get to ask a house cleaning question,
00:00:14
and I get to help you find an answer.
00:00:16
Okay, so today’s question comes from a house cleaner who wants to know:
00:00:20
“What is the best way to get pet hair off of furniture?”
00:00:24
Okay, so that is an excellent question and there are seven ways
00:00:28
to get pet hair off of furniture.
00:00:30
And 5 of them are for professional house cleaners and two of them are for homeowners.
00:00:35
So, I'm going to cover all seven of those ways with you.
00:00:38
Now, don't worry about taking notes because all the notes are already saved for you in
00:00:43
the show notes (in the little show more section) and links to the things I'm about to tell
00:00:48
you are also there.
00:00:49
Okay, so the very first thing as a professional house cleaner you're probably already wearing
00:00:54
nitrile gloves.
00:00:56
The nitrile gloves are a whole lot like having some kind of rubber or sticky tape or something
00:01:02
like that where the pet hair will adhere to them.
00:01:06
Now you don't want to use the same nitrile gloves
00:01:08
that you just cleaned the bathroom with.
00:01:10
Because if you use chemicals or there is bathroom ickiness on those gloves you don't want to
00:01:15
spread that all over these people’s furniture.
00:01:16
Because that would not be cool.
00:01:19
Okay so put on a new pair of nitrile gloves it will cost you about a dime.
00:01:23
Put on a new pair of nitrile gloves and start at the top of the furniture or the cushion
00:01:27
and go in the same direction.
00:01:30
You don't want to smear it all over, you want to go in one direction.
00:01:34
And as you scrape the pet hair off it will adhere to the gloves and it will come off
00:01:39
in a little row or a little line, that's just like a glob of pet hair.
00:01:44
So, once you have a glob of pet hair, item number two is your vacuum.
00:01:49
You want to have a vacuum with a hose attachment on it so you can just
00:01:53
vacuum up that glob of hair.
00:01:55
Or you can just pinch the glob of hair and throw it in the trash.
00:01:58
I like to vacuum it because then it's contained and it doesn't float out of the garbage can
00:02:03
and back onto the furniture.
00:02:05
Because you're going to have a lot of it.
00:02:07
So, let's say that there's a whole couch that's full of cat hair.
00:02:11
You can wipe it down with your nitrile gloves.
00:02:14
The next thing that they have is called a rubber pet hair removal brush.
00:02:17
It looks just like a hairbrush but it is made of rubber and the bristles bend back and forth.
00:02:24
Think of the little baster that you use to baste meat with when you're doing a cookout,
00:02:30
how it has those little bendy bristles.
00:02:33
This is the same kind of an idea.
00:02:35
And so when you brush the fur off of the furniture it comes right off
00:02:40
because it adheres to that rubber.
00:02:43
Then you have to clean off the brush and again chunk of in the trash or vacuum it up with
00:02:48
a vacuum attachment.
00:02:49
So far, we have the nitrile gloves.
00:02:51
We have a rubber brush.
00:02:53
And we have the vacuum hose attachment.
00:02:55
Those are three of the ways.
00:02:57
Okay, another way and this is for pet home… pet owners or home owners.
00:03:04
Both of you can use this.
00:03:05
And it is an amazing invention it is called the ChomChom Roller.
00:03:11
And basically, what it is, think of a lint roller that has the masking tape on both sides
00:03:17
it's a roller like that.
00:03:18
But instead of using tape, or batteries or chemicals or anything like that it's a…
00:03:24
it's a felt remover for the pet hair that has a built-in squeegee on it.
00:03:31
And then it has a little trash bin built on the other side so as you roll this along the
00:03:37
furniture, the pet removal element of it and the squeegee grab all of the hair and it throws
00:03:45
it over into the little trash bin.
00:03:47
Then you just open the door of the trash bin and you run it along with your finger, scoop
00:03:50
out that little glob of hair and chunk that in the trash.
00:03:55
And the ChomChom should be inside every house cleaners cleaning caddy.
00:04:00
Because you just never know when you're going to run into it, and it's a very quick easy
00:04:03
clean up to choo choo choo choo choo and it's done.
00:04:07
So that's also great for homeowners
00:04:09
but I really recommend that for professional house cleaners.
00:04:12
Now, the other thing that I recommend is just a regular squeegee, like a shower squeegee.
00:04:18
And as a professional, you already have a shower squeegee inside your cleaning caddy.
00:04:23
And so if you…
00:04:24
let's say there's a dining room chair that a cat always sits on.
00:04:28
You can squeegee that chair with absolutely no harm to the chair whatsoever.
00:04:34
And so that's a very easy way then with the squeegee if you're a homeowner and you have
00:04:38
a squeegee inside your shower I would recommend you actually buy another squeegee or buy a
00:04:43
ChomChom so that you can just roll that pet hair off your furniture.
00:04:49
This is also great for like leather furniture and stuff like that
00:04:52
it's just going to clean right up.
00:04:54
Now there are some fine fibers and fabrics that have pet hair embedded in them like you
00:05:00
can't even vacuum at you vacuum it there still pet hair.
00:05:03
And that would be like if you lift up the cushion on your couch and there's this fabric
00:05:08
wear the leather meets the edges of the frame and that's all covered in cat hair and dog
00:05:14
hair that's going to be embedded in there.
00:05:17
So there a couple of ways that you can get this out of your furniture fabric.
00:05:21
I'm not talking about the leather I'm talking about the furniture fabric that's underneath
00:05:25
the cushions of your couch.
00:05:28
And then also let's say the car floor mats or the car carpet.
00:05:33
It's really fine and you get those cat and animal hairs embedded in there and they don't
00:05:37
vacuum out.
00:05:38
Okay, so this is a tip for homeowners because this is not really very practical for house
00:05:43
cleaners to carry these two items with them just for the pet hair.
00:05:48
There's an excellent way to do it.
00:05:50
Take a squeegee bottle just an empty, spray bottle and mix it 7 parts water to 1-part
00:05:58
fabric softener.
00:05:59
Okay?
00:06:00
So, this will make the area smell nice but it will also moisten it just a little bit.
00:06:05
Once it's moistened just a little bit you can take a pumice stone.
00:06:09
A pumice stone is that you can buy them in a little block.
00:06:12
It's a porous stone and they're kind of heavy, and you start again
00:06:15
just like you did with the gloves.
00:06:18
Start in one position and scrape in the same direction.
00:06:22
Don't go back and forth.
00:06:24
Don't go in a circle.
00:06:25
Start at the top and scrape downward.
00:06:27
Start at the top scrape downward.
00:06:29
Start at the top scrape downward. and again you're going to create a little thing at the
00:06:34
bottom where all of the dog or cat hair collects.
00:06:37
And then you can vacuum up that little thing that you've created, just a little glob of
00:06:42
hair you can vacuum that up with the vacuum.
00:06:45
Now if you're going to use the fabric softener and the pumice stone
00:06:48
I have to give you a warning.
00:06:51
Whatever you are using it on leave yourself a 1-inch frame
00:06:55
around the area that you are scraping.
00:06:58
Because you don't want it…if it's the cushion of a chair you don't want to scrape the wooden
00:07:02
frame with the pumice stone.
00:07:04
The pumice stone is a stone.
00:07:06
And so it will scratch whatever hard surface it comes in contact with.
00:07:10
So, if you're cleaning out the back of your car, or your cleaning the sides of
00:07:14
your car carpet, if you knock into the furniture, the leather
00:07:20
that's the interior of your car, or you hit the sides of the doors or whatever you will
00:07:25
scratch that with a pumice stone.
00:07:27
So, you want to leave yourself a 1” inch frame around the area that you're scraping
00:07:32
and then you want to use your rubber brush to get that or your nitrile gloves to go in
00:07:37
and to get around those areas in the frame area that you created.
00:07:42
I hope that makes sense.
00:07:44
Because this is also a podcast I have to go to great lengths to try to explain to you
00:07:48
what I'm talking about so you can imagine it in your mind because you can't see it.
00:07:53
Okay so those are the seven ways #1: The Nitrile Gloves
00:07:57
#2: The Rubber Brush that is designed with the bendy bristles
00:08:02
#3: The Squeegee
00:08:03
#4: The Fabric Softener and
00:08:06
#5: The Pumice Stone.
00:08:07
#6: The ChomChom Roller
00:08:09
and then #7: Your vacuum
00:08:10
Those are your seven ways to remove pet hair from your house, from your car,
00:08:15
from your furniture, from your carpets.
00:08:17
It works on all of those things.
00:08:19
So those would be my suggestions and once you find the right technique for you
00:08:24
because they all work.
00:08:26
So there might be one that you're more…
00:08:30
Probably going to use.
00:08:31
It’s probably more you.
00:08:33
It's probably more convenient to you or it's easier for you to do.
00:08:37
Find something that works for you and then stick with that method.
00:08:40
And I'll tell you what, your life will be a whole lot easier when you're not then carting
00:08:45
the animal fur and hair with you wherever you go.
00:08:48
Alrighty, so that's it for today.
00:08:50
And until we meet again,
00:08:52
leave the world a cleaner place than when you found it.
