Today we will see together four structures that we need to create cohesive sentences;
00:00:13
the connectives that we will see today, in fact, are not single words -
00:00:18
like those that have always seen in the previous videos - but they are real sentences and syntactic structures.
00:00:26
We will see only 4 today, because they are quite advanced structures - not too much -
00:00:34
and therefore it is good to focus on a few at a time to assimilate them better, to memorize them better.
00:00:42
The first example we see together is a correlative linking
00:00:46
structure and is "on the one hand ... on the other".
00:00:54
We can also have the version with the word "part",
00:00:57
therefore "on one side ... on the other".
00:01:04
Let's see a couple of examples:
00:01:06
On the one hand I am happy for them, on the other I wonder how they will organize themselves in time.
00:01:15
It is difficult to make a decision: on the one hand there are always those who support you, but on the other hand there are always those who throw you down.
00:01:27
So you see that the information that I organize in these two sentences is in contrast with each other,
00:01:35
these structures serve precisely to correlate these two information
00:01:41
that are in contrast and allow you to put them in the same sentence.
00:01:46
The second linking structure we see today is correlative as well,
00:01:52
it is "not only ... but also".
00:02:01
An example:
00:02:02
Not only did he lie to me, but he also had the nerve to make fun of me.
00:02:11
Not only was he late, but he was also distracted during the lesson.
00:02:21
Therefore, this relative structure is always used - or more often than not -
00:02:27
in the case of negative elements, so we add further information,
00:02:35
always negative, to the already negative picture of the situation.
00:02:40
The third structure I want to bring to your attention is "in the former case ... in the latter case".
00:02:52
Let's read an example together:
00:02:54
There is a substantial difference between the airbag of a car and the airbag of a motorcycle:
00:03:01
in the former case the device is placed inside the vehicle,
00:03:06
while in the latter case it is integrated into the technical clothing .
00:03:14
"In the former case ... in the latter case" they allow us to refer to two elements previously mentioned,
00:03:23
without however repeating them in the discourse,
00:03:26
to avoid a repetition that could weigh down the text.
00:03:33
So it is usually used when we want to highlight the differences between two elements or between two situations.
00:03:44
The fourth and last structure that I want to bring to your attention
00:03:48
is an adverbial phrase, "regarding",
00:03:52
of which we can also find synonyms, such as "as for", "in reference to".
00:04:00
Let's read an example:
00:04:02
As for/Regarding young graduates this year, there is no declining number during the pandemic.
00:04:11
"The number of graduate exams has not changed since last year," says the Minister of University and Research.
00:04:23
These three structures, which in fact can be interchangeable in the sentence,
00:04:27
because they have the same meaning and the same function,
00:04:31
serve precisely to bring the attention of the reader or listener to a specific element.
00:04:40
So, let's recap:
00:04:41
On the one hand ... on the other; not only... but also;
00:04:48
in the former case ... in the latter case; regarding, as for, in reference to.
00:04:59
That's it for today's lesson.
00:05:03
I hope this short grammar video is useful to you,
00:05:07
I also hope you have learned some new information.
00:05:10
If you want, you can practice using these structures in the comments below.
00:05:16
Thank you so much for watching today's lesson and we'll see you in the next video.
00:05:23
See you soon, bye!
