Description:
Transformations that involve a disciplined movement of atoms, for example martensite, bainite and Widmanstaetten ferrite, lead to a shape deformation that is very large. This in turn leads to a strain energy that dominates all aspects of the transformation, including the shape which is constrained to be that of a thin, lenticular plate with sharp edges. Here we explain the physical basis for the strain energy term that must be included in any quantitative model of the transformations discussed. In fact, the same logic applies to mechanical twins, which also assume a thin, lenticular appearance, unlike annealing twins that do not represent deformation. http://www.phase-trans.msm.cam.ac.uk
