Jay Haynes with a film Sensei YouTube
00:00:02
channel in this video I'm showing the
00:00:04
basics of combining multiple models with
00:00:06
multiple textures into a single model
00:00:09
with a single texture in
00:00:15
blender before I begin please do me a
00:00:18
favor and like this video And subscribe
00:00:20
to the channel for more content like
00:00:22
this so the process of combining
00:00:24
multiple models into a single model is
00:00:26
called joining and the process of
00:00:28
combining mult multiple textures is
00:00:31
called baking so we're going to start by
00:00:33
joining these models together this is a
00:00:35
project that I created this is a a set
00:00:39
of models that I made for a virtual
00:00:41
reality game that I was helping out with
00:00:44
the creation of and uh basically it is
00:00:47
there's a uh column here of bricks
00:00:51
there's this wooden post these two green
00:00:54
ropes that are holding up this
00:00:56
sign um so what I'm going to do is I'm
00:00:59
just going to grab grab all of these and
00:01:01
highlight them and then under object I
00:01:04
will select join and now they're all
00:01:06
joined into a single model and I'm just
00:01:09
going to rename this
00:01:11
original okay and if you open up the
00:01:14
properties you will see that there are
00:01:16
three textures involved there's a
00:01:18
texture for the sign there's a brick
00:01:20
texture for the column and then the post
00:01:23
texture is for this wooden post as well
00:01:25
as these green ropes here so what I'm
00:01:28
going to do is
00:01:30
right click on this and copy it and then
00:01:33
I'll just hit contrl +v to paste it and
00:01:36
now I have a exact duplicate of it and
00:01:39
I'm just going to rename this the baked
00:01:41
version and under that baked version I
00:01:43
will go ahead and open up the materials
00:01:47
Tab and just select this minus remove
00:01:50
material slot from all three of those so
00:01:54
one two three they're gone all right so
00:01:56
now I'm set to go with regard to re
00:02:00
baking these into a new single material
00:02:03
texture of course before I do that I
00:02:06
will probably need to re UV unwrap that
00:02:10
so I'm going to go to the UV editing
00:02:13
workspace Tab and if I select all you
00:02:17
can see that this is really a mess it's
00:02:19
all laying over itself uh and that's not
00:02:22
going to work so I'm just going to go
00:02:24
ahead and select UV smart UV unwrap and
00:02:27
then okay so now it has redistributed
00:02:31
all of these faces in a way where they
00:02:34
can be individually mapped going to the
00:02:38
shading tab what I will do now is create
00:02:41
a new material for this baked item so
00:02:44
I'm going to select new and then under
00:02:49
add texture I will select image texture
00:02:52
and I will just place it right here I
00:02:54
can go ahead and connect this and then I
00:02:56
will select new create a new image image
00:03:00
and I'm just going to call this baked
00:03:02
you can call it whatever you want you
00:03:04
can make it any size you want I'll just
00:03:05
leave it at 1K and I will select okay so
00:03:09
now over here if I select it from the
00:03:11
dropdown you can see that it is empty
00:03:15
there is nothing in it and if I turn off
00:03:18
the original you can see that the whole
00:03:19
thing is basically black because there's
00:03:23
nothing there so now we are ready to go
00:03:26
ahead and set up the bake let me turn
00:03:29
back on the original the first thing we
00:03:31
need to do is go to the render Tab and
00:03:35
then change the render engine from EV to
00:03:38
Cycles because EV is a great render
00:03:40
engine but it does not um support baking
00:03:44
under the Cycles tab we can go down to
00:03:47
bake and we'll just twirl those
00:03:49
properties open and you can see that we
00:03:52
have several choices here that are
00:03:55
available the first thing we're going to
00:03:56
do is we're going to change the bake
00:03:58
type from combined to diffuse diffuse is
00:04:01
just the color information and not
00:04:04
anything else also we're going to go
00:04:07
ahead and uncheck direct and indirect
00:04:10
contributions these are basically like
00:04:12
lighting that is on this and that kind
00:04:14
of thing since I don't have any Lighting
00:04:16
on this uh I don't want that to be
00:04:18
influencing it here okay now I'm going
00:04:22
to select the original and then I'm
00:04:24
going to control and select baked what
00:04:27
this does is this makes baked the
00:04:30
selected item and then original is still
00:04:34
active here and what we're going to do
00:04:36
is we're going to go selected to active
00:04:39
actually it's the other way this is
00:04:41
selected this is the active selective
00:04:44
right so selected to active is what we
00:04:46
want we want to make sure that baked is
00:04:48
the light yellow color and that the
00:04:50
other one is the darker orange color
00:04:53
twirling open selected to active I want
00:04:55
to do one thing and that is under
00:04:57
Extrusion I want to jump just tweak that
00:05:00
up slightly to
00:05:02
01 the reason is because if we don't do
00:05:05
that it may cause some bleeding through
00:05:09
for example if I turn this off for a
00:05:12
second you can see the the lettering
00:05:14
here on the sign might bleed through to
00:05:16
the back of the sign we don't want that
00:05:19
so we're going to add just a smidgen of
00:05:23
an extrusion to prevent that from
00:05:25
happening now that I've set everything
00:05:27
up all I have to do is select bake and
00:05:31
you can see down here that it is going
00:05:33
along and it won't actually take very
00:05:36
long at all and now it's done and you
00:05:38
can see that I have a new baked texture
00:05:41
here so if I go back to UV editing you
00:05:45
can see how this texture is now mapped
00:05:48
around this the way that it's supposed
00:05:52
to be what I'm going to do just for
00:05:54
Simplicity is I'm going to go ahead and
00:05:55
delete the
00:05:56
original and then I will go ahead and
00:05:59
and select all of these to get a better
00:06:02
picture of that right and it looks
00:06:04
lovely if I come back out here to layout
00:06:07
you can see that this is one model that
00:06:10
has a single material attached to it now
00:06:14
I do want to save that texture for
00:06:18
future use especially if I'm going to be
00:06:19
uploading it uh to my virtual reality
00:06:22
app or whatever so I'm going to go back
00:06:24
into shading and there's a couple of
00:06:25
ways to do this one is with the baked
00:06:28
texture selected I can just select this
00:06:31
three bar icon and then under image I
00:06:34
can say save or save as also under UV
00:06:37
editing I can go ahead and under image
00:06:41
select save or save as and that way I'll
00:06:45
have that texture available I'm Jay
