Our route for 7 days traveling in Middle Dalmatia: "Moscow - airport Split - Trogir - Split - Hvar - island brac (Bol and Sumartin) - Makarska - Brela - Baska Voda - Makarska Riviera - Biokovo (top of St. George) - Omis - Split airport – Moscow" Weather in late September was remarkable: +22-25, the water in the sea +21-22 gr. * * * Makarska (Horw. Makarska) is a city in Croatia, in Dalmatia. Resort, the capital of the Makarska Riviera. Located in the Central part of the Adriatic coast between the cities of Split (60 km) and Dubrovnik (140 km). The population is about 14 thousand people. The town of Makarska is connected by regular bus connections with major cities of Croatia, as well as a ferry line with town of Sumartin on the island brac. Located on a narrow strip between the sea and mountain Biokovo, which is located in the natural Park. The highest peak of Biokovo mountain, SV. George (1762 m). The Cape of St. Peter divides the coast in the city of Makarska on the two bays. In the VII century the entire coastline of the area was populated by Slavs, which is called areaname named after the river Neretva flowing into the sea South of the Makarska Riviera. On 18 September 887, the year the Venetian fleet of the Doge Peter Candiano was defeated by areaname in the naval battle near modern split, which forced the Venetians to pay tribute to the local tribes for free navigation in these waters. However, the power of the local princes quickly dried up. For several centuries these lands were fought with varying success local and Bosnian princes, Hungarian-Croatian kings and Venice. In the XV—XVI centuries the area around Makarska again became an arena of struggle, this time Venice and the Ottoman Empire. The Turks occupied settlement in the middle of the XVI century and controlled it for over 100 years, in that time it has become one of the main FORTS of the coast, reflecting the Venetian attack. In 1646, the area again began to control the Venetians, and in 1681 Makarska was officially annexed to Venice. Over 100 years of rule of Venice, the city grew and became one of the key points of Dalmatia, a mix of many sea and land trade routes. In 1797, Makarska, as well as all of Croatia, was annexed to Austria. After a short French rule in 1813, again came under the rule of the Austrian crown. In 1914 the first hotel for holidaymakers, but the real flowering of the Makarska Riviera, a resort area began in the 70-ies of XX century. After the collapse of Yugoslavia in 1990, Makarska and Makarska Riviera, part of the independent state of Croatia. Unlike Dubrovnik and many other cities in Croatian Dalmatia, the city has suffered little in the civil wars of the 90-ies.
