00:00:00
this is a Porsche 911 996 it's actually
00:00:03
my very own 996 and I'm gonna review it
00:00:05
yes and then took you around the design
00:00:07
show you inside check out its
00:00:10
practicality there's not much of it and
00:00:11
take you for a drive the Porsche 911 996
00:00:15
was first released in 1998 and it was
00:00:17
very controversial it's the first 911
00:00:19
not to be air called it was war called
00:00:21
whoo also it didn't have the classic
00:00:24
round head lap design got this weird
00:00:26
kind of sweeping shape which was
00:00:28
inspired by a Porsche race car now
00:00:30
originally the car had amber headlights
00:00:32
it's just like on the Boxster but they
00:00:34
want to differentiate the car from the
00:00:35
Boxster so they made it clear in the
00:00:38
year 2000 Porsche released the Carrera 4
00:00:40
so the four-wheel-drive version before
00:00:42
also came with poor stability management
00:00:44
and easkey control this early 3.4 has no
00:00:47
driver's aids at all apart from ABS it's
00:00:49
just you your skill back there of and
00:00:51
then you get from its hires also in 2000
00:00:53
the turbo is released now that used a
00:00:55
different engine rather than this new
00:00:57
m96 built specifically for the new 996
00:01:00
it used the old mix cur racing bred
00:01:03
engine which had been in previous 911 so
00:01:05
that had 420 horsepower and all-wheel
00:01:08
drive
00:01:09
operated brakes and suspension as well
00:01:11
as a turbo you could also get a gt3
00:01:13
version of the 996 so that use the same
00:01:15
3.6 liter engine but it was naturally
00:01:18
aspirated and pumped out 360 horsepower
00:01:21
which is good for naught to 60 in under
00:01:23
five seconds now in 2002 the facelift
00:01:25
version of this car came out and also
00:01:27
with that a gt3 version which had 380
00:01:30
horsepower this time in 2002 Porsche
00:01:33
also released a Carrera 4s model so that
00:01:36
used the body of the turbo but without
00:01:37
the rear air intakes in other turbos
00:01:40
brakes the turbo suspension but he used
00:01:42
the 3.6 naturally aspirated m96 engine
00:01:45
now the 996 didn't just share its head
00:01:48
lap design with the Box stayed also
00:01:49
shared his bonnet its wings
00:01:51
it's rinse cream its doors in fact the
00:01:54
whole front part of the car including
00:01:55
the inside was shared with the Boxster
00:01:58
that's one of the ways that Porsche was
00:01:59
able to save itself you know it wasn't
00:02:01
profitable so it needed to cut cost and
00:02:03
it did that by spreading the cost of
00:02:04
development of the 911 and the Boxster
00:02:06
across all those sales obviously the big
00:02:09
difference between the Boxster and the
00:02:10
911 a puff in fact that the 911 has a
00:02:12
roof is that we
00:02:13
the 911 the engine is slung out beyond
00:02:16
the rear axle its rear engine always has
00:02:18
been I always will be
00:02:20
god damn it now the engine is actually
00:02:22
the same as in the Box are pretty much
00:02:23
in the boxer it's 2.5 liters when it was
00:02:25
first released in this it was bored out
00:02:27
to 3.4 liters
00:02:30
now this engine puts out 296 horsepower
00:02:33
in 2000 there's a bit of an upgrade and
00:02:36
he put out 300 horsepower and in 2002
00:02:39
they changed the engine the standard
00:02:40
Carrera from a 3.4 boring out again to
00:02:43
become a 3.6 they also added mario cam
00:02:46
plus so you got variable valve lift as
00:02:48
well as timing so a bit more torque in
00:02:50
the mid-range and the power increased to
00:02:52
315 horsepower alright let's talk about
00:02:55
the design of the 996 very very
00:02:56
controversial because of those lights
00:02:58
but actually I like them and I prefer
00:03:00
the first gen lights than the gentoos
00:03:02
they're just working better with the
00:03:03
lines in the bonnet I also like the
00:03:05
narrow body of the Carrera 2 the later
00:03:07
4s it is kind of cool but this and it's
00:03:10
spelt and sleek about this design by a
00:03:13
chap called pinky leh and criticized at
00:03:16
the time but I think it's quite timeless
00:03:18
actually best angle of it is the rear
00:03:21
3/4 the lines just work and the back
00:03:24
ends just about wide enough without
00:03:26
being a fatass here on the inside the
00:03:29
996 is a complete departure to all 911s
00:03:32
before it the dash is all swoopy and
00:03:36
actually it was originally designed for
00:03:39
the 993 but portion have enough money
00:03:41
back then to put it into production so
00:03:43
the interiors actually design in the
00:03:44
early 90s and eventually they went to
00:03:47
put it into the 996 in terms of the
00:03:49
design of the center console here this
00:03:51
is two-tone but you could get it as just
00:03:53
all one color glad it's not because of
00:03:56
the color of this car so it's unusual
00:03:59
it's called Savannah beige some people
00:04:01
absolutely hate it I like light
00:04:04
interiors but there is something kind of
00:04:06
old Mannion cigarette smoking about it
00:04:09
although this car hasn't been smoked in
00:04:10
as a smell of cigarette smoke that's all
00:04:12
some of the other colors are quite weird
00:04:14
you can get a terracotta which I also
00:04:15
like and then you can get a weird green
00:04:18
colour mmm there's a blue which is
00:04:20
alright a grey I'm not so sure about the
00:04:23
grey black even goes for black bits too
00:04:25
predictable I want a nice long
00:04:27
color which made the car feel airy but
00:04:30
yet it is an acquired taste though I do
00:04:32
think it goes well with the blue paint
00:04:35
there are characteristic Porsche styles
00:04:37
they're really really clear I love the
00:04:39
fact you've got the big sensual rev
00:04:40
counter got a speedo in there just below
00:04:42
with digital counter on it and then
00:04:45
you've got your miles per hour to the
00:04:46
left with weird increments very posh on
00:04:49
the right you've got your temperature
00:04:50
gauge if your gauge your oil pressure
00:04:53
gauge that's important and then your
00:04:55
battery charge level as well and some
00:04:57
warning lights below it all very clean
00:04:59
and easy to see this particular car has
00:05:01
got the aluminium doors you'd normally
00:05:03
get them in black the Gentoo cars which
00:05:05
came out in 2002 of a slightly different
00:05:07
dull design larger digital displays with
00:05:11
more information being shown but
00:05:13
generally it's a 7 I love the fact that
00:05:15
you can actually see all the dials to
00:05:17
the steering wheel no messing about
00:05:19
speaking of the steering wheel this is a
00:05:20
three spoke version but you could get a
00:05:22
four spoke version which I didn't like
00:05:23
that was on early cars not a fan of that
00:05:26
the layout is actually really clean
00:05:28
previous on Elevens before this car were
00:05:30
kind of a bit of a mess with buttons all
00:05:32
over the place but Toyota are involved
00:05:34
in the manufacture of this car so they
00:05:36
actually worked as consultants to pause
00:05:38
to improve their production process so
00:05:39
they could be profitable but also
00:05:41
clearly helped with the layout of the
00:05:42
interior of the car because it's dead
00:05:44
simple you've got your locking there you've got
00:05:47
your rear screen heating you've got your
00:05:49
rear screen wiper there there's your
00:05:51
climate control all in one pot there
00:05:53
that's what the radio sits below it now
00:05:54
I've got an aftermarket system because I
00:05:56
wanted Bluetooth and I wanted digital
00:05:58
radio as well I've still got the
00:06:00
original blueprint but yeah it's not
00:06:03
that great you could get an upgraded
00:06:04
system a bose system which meant that
00:06:06
you actually had a slightly larger unit
00:06:08
and it was moved below now this car so
00:06:11
oh look it's got the tapes look at that
00:06:13
places for your tapes slightly lighter
00:06:15
cars from about 2000 had to see these
00:06:18
sliders in there and then there's a
00:06:19
little space down there as well in fact
00:06:22
I'm quite a few cars they flip where the
00:06:23
air-conditioning is and this sound
00:06:25
system depending on if you've got that
00:06:27
upgraded sound system there's a little
00:06:28
switch just down by your right foot
00:06:30
which you can press and it'll raise the
00:06:31
rear spoiler so you can clean it while
00:06:33
it's stationary in terms of the rest of
00:06:34
the layout of the switches you've got
00:06:35
your lights here there's where your key
00:06:38
goes to start the car then you've got
00:06:40
indicator stalks and then you wouldn't
00:06:42
scream wipers there's a vanity mirror
00:06:45
there's one for the passenger as well
00:06:48
and your lights appear huge rear view
00:06:50
mirror and the view at the back actually
00:06:52
is really good because you've got a big
00:06:55
rear screen get great view at the back
00:06:57
and look even if I sit up straight there
00:06:59
is a lot of headroom in here so if
00:07:00
you're totally fine now you can check
00:07:02
the seat but it's on some kind of a lot
00:07:03
hydrate Ramzi get high lower and you can
00:07:09
slide it quite a way back so the
00:07:11
American Eagle small you'll be fine in
00:07:12
this car the backrest as standard is
00:07:15
electrically operated there you can get
00:07:18
hardback sport seat so these are the
00:07:20
standard seats they're called tombstone
00:07:21
seats because of the shape of them the
00:07:23
whole back sport seats are nicer they
00:07:24
they're a bit wider at the top and they
00:07:27
just hold your body a bit better and as
00:07:29
the name suggests they have a whole back
00:07:30
so they look a bit more sporty so all in
00:07:32
all a nice car easy to find an ideal
00:07:34
driving position lots of adjustment in
00:07:37
the steering wheel it'll move for me
00:07:39
come on doesn't go up or down though
00:07:41
just in or out in terms of the quality
00:07:43
well in the UK the cars had fallen over
00:07:45
so there's leather everywhere all over
00:07:48
the place and it's it's alright leather
00:07:50
it's not the finest in the world but it
00:07:53
but it's ok and there's a modicum of
00:07:56
practicality so door bins look at that
00:07:59
there were decent size and they shut
00:08:02
you've also got a little storage area
00:08:04
just under there as well there's some
00:08:07
storage here if you have the Bose
00:08:10
upgrade the sound system me that's when
00:08:12
the speakers go so by not having it
00:08:14
you've got a bit more storage which
00:08:15
obviously I like this is a weird thing
00:08:18
on the early generation cars look the
00:08:21
cup holder yeah this is just so odd so
00:08:26
the cup holder actually fits in a slot
00:08:29
where the air vent is so you just slot
00:08:31
that in there not uh and then you put
00:08:33
your drink in there
00:08:34
and it's then cooled by the vents and
00:08:37
the air conditioning later cars the
00:08:39
facelift you press a button there and
00:08:40
they pop out much better but hey there
00:08:43
we go if you open the door you can then
00:08:45
operate the release for the front boot
00:08:48
or for the engine bay cover like that on
00:08:52
later cars they have
00:08:54
electrical switches the problem was
00:08:56
though is if your battery went flat you
00:08:59
couldn't open the boot so you'd have to
00:09:00
connect them via a fuse down there
00:09:02
another thing that's on this car is a
00:09:04
little space here which i think is for
00:09:05
the manual but yeah I don't put the
00:09:09
manual in there because it doesn't fit
00:09:10
notes on Porsche also just down here by
00:09:13
the passenger seat there's room for a
00:09:15
little portion Briella which has gone
00:09:16
from this car which is a shame
00:09:18
there is no glovebox on this though no
00:09:20
plug box at all you get them on the gent
00:09:23
in cars but for some reason they didn't
00:09:25
put them on the 3.4 probably the same
00:09:27
thing with the cupholders really oh well
00:09:29
yeah other than that it's all quite
00:09:33
spacious good visibility nice so then
00:09:37
here in the rear of the 911 it's not a
00:09:39
great place to be never has been and
00:09:40
never will be
00:09:41
even the very latest ones which are
00:09:43
quite a lot bigger than this car so
00:09:45
first thing is Headroom no yeah there's
00:09:48
no good no good at all and if I pull the
00:09:52
seat back I have to go legs akimbo to be
00:09:56
able to do anything I do have a seatbelt
00:09:58
though so you could go somewhere legally
00:10:02
in it but you won't want to go far
00:10:04
especially because the seat base is
00:10:06
super hard and the back is upright and
00:10:08
it's a cramped but unlike a box for you
00:10:10
can give to people a lift in the back
00:10:12
which is quite handy also what's hand is
00:10:16
this you can fall down the rear seatback
00:10:20
so you can use this area for carrying
00:10:24
stuff like golf clubs or whatever you
00:10:26
need to you're not to lift at this
00:10:28
carpet actually there we go to get to
00:10:33
the rear shock absorbers hand if you got
00:10:36
adjustable ones like I have anyway let's
00:10:39
put this back and I'll show you the rest
00:10:41
of the practicality in the front boot
00:10:45
exciting so here we have the front for
00:10:47
the 996
00:10:48
you'll understand that if you're
00:10:50
American if not it's a front boot
00:10:51
shortened to fruit if you're British so
00:10:54
it's quite deep but to make the most the
00:10:57
space you're going to have to use soft
00:10:58
bags to squeeze everything in there and
00:11:00
if you do you probably got enough room
00:11:01
for a week away for two of you there's
00:11:03
also the spacesaver spare wheel in there
00:11:05
and integrated into that is it
00:11:07
all kit and the jack you've got your
00:11:09
brake fluid there your batches under
00:11:11
there there's your filler over there for the
00:11:13
windscreen wash no light there and I've
00:11:15
got a CD Auto changer which I do not use
00:11:18
and over here is some silicon spray
00:11:20
that's really good to spray where the
00:11:23
interior trim meets because sometimes
00:11:25
you get squeaks and that just gets rid
00:11:26
of it completely
00:11:27
I'll do the obvious test for the boot
00:11:29
I'm going to climb into it so look you
00:11:33
can see that it's actually quite a
00:11:35
reasonable size the 99 six is a super
00:11:40
easy car to drive in town so the
00:11:43
steering it's not too heavy the gear
00:11:45
change as well that's not bad it's quite
00:11:48
a long throw and you can feel the
00:11:50
mechanicals inside it but it's nice and
00:11:52
light the only thing is a brake so if
00:11:54
you come out have like a normal
00:11:55
hatchback they do need a bit of a prod
00:11:58
to actually work then there's a turning
00:12:01
circle so that's good luck it's quite
00:12:05
good and maneuverable this car I think
00:12:07
that's best about it though is the sheer
00:12:09
visibility so the dash is quite low and
00:12:15
you can see the corners of the wings
00:12:17
which is great yeah the backs brilliant
00:12:19
as well
00:12:20
the pillars aren't too far it's a small
00:12:23
little car it's very very easy to drive
00:12:27
what's not to like
00:12:41
so this is what the 911 is all about a
00:12:43
twisty road and here it absolutely
00:12:47
excels the first thing that stands out
00:12:49
is a steering there's nothing like you
00:12:51
today so this is hydraulically assisted
00:12:53
and it's so so good so pure you can feel
00:12:58
the road to the wheel it's it's lovely
00:13:02
and it's kind of slow compared to modern
00:13:07
steering systems on the first bit of
00:13:08
turn look but it happens but then as
00:13:10
you're turning in you feel so much in it
00:13:12
it all just waits up and it's just so
00:13:15
natural I absolutely adore it I also
00:13:18
like the pedal position because it makes
00:13:20
heel and tone just did easy the
00:13:23
gearshift is like I said it's long but
00:13:26
it's it's very accurate and it's nice
00:13:30
the kids are slot into place you know I
00:13:33
think a car like this has a heavy clutch
00:13:35
but it doesn't say it's easy just whip
00:13:37
between the ratios key thing though of
00:13:40
course with a 911 is the location of the
00:13:41
engine in the very back so you have to
00:13:45
change your driving style slightly it's
00:13:47
prone to understeer because it just
00:13:51
wants to push on with an engine at the
00:13:52
back and not too much weight on the nose
00:13:53
so you have to brake quite hard into a
00:13:55
corner to get the weight over the nose
00:13:57
and then power out of it so you've got
00:14:00
really good traction as the ancien
00:14:03
pushes down on the back wheels and
00:14:04
drives you out one thing you don't wanna
00:14:06
do this car though is change your mind
00:14:08
so set it up this already gonna do I
00:14:11
just do it and it will grip and go round
00:14:13
if you bow low though no liftoff it can
00:14:16
get a little bit kind of snappy
00:14:19
and it's a short car that way at the
00:14:22
back and once it loses traction the
00:14:23
backings turning or rotates on you and
00:14:26
you have know what you're doing to catch
00:14:27
it finally though let's talk about the
00:14:29
engine so this 3.4 it's pretty Revie
00:14:33
starts putting its power down around
00:14:35
3,000 RPM lots of talk but then it keeps
00:14:39
on revving the railing the revving of
00:14:41
revving go
00:14:44
it's a prising how quick it is and the
00:14:46
sound is also moving around in a 911 it
00:14:50
gives you so many thrills you probably
00:14:53
won't dream does this feel fast to me
00:14:54
obviously I Drive high-performance cars
00:14:56
part of my job but it does in fact I
00:14:59
think it's a perfect balance of enough
00:15:02
performance and grip for the road I
00:15:04
really really do you don't need to be
00:15:07
faster than this it really is a good
00:15:09
front car if you're fed up of
00:15:13
turbocharged cars and how easy they are
00:15:16
to drive and how little you feel from
00:15:18
them
00:15:19
get yourself an old 911 aizen 996

Description:

Is the Porsche 911 996 the best value used sports car you can buy? A decent one can be had for around £15,000 and in this video I explain the model range and review my very own 996. This is the car which was built from 1998 until 2004 and was the very first 991 to be water cooled not air cooled.I will be doing another video on problems I've had with my car and things to look out for. But this video is all about what the actual car is like. Please make sure you are subscribed to this channel.... and can you spot the mistake in the video towards the end? I thought I'd leave it in as an easter egg. And it's there because I actually shot and edited this video all on own!
