00:00:04
what's up guys Johnny May here and
00:00:06
welcome to this week's quick tip where
00:00:08
I'm gonna teach you two essential skills
00:00:11
that you need to know if you want to
00:00:13
improvise blues piano now we hear a lot
00:00:15
of piano students learn their blues
00:00:17
scale and they'll learn their chords in
00:00:20
their left hand and then they'll
00:00:21
improvise using the scale up and down
00:00:23
the piano
00:00:24
this is a great place to start however
00:00:26
after a while it can start to sound very
00:00:28
repetitive just using this one scale you
00:00:31
see when I improvise blues piano and
00:00:33
when professional blues pianists
00:00:35
improvise the blues they actually tend
00:00:37
to use two different blue scales and so
00:00:40
in today's lesson I'm gonna teach you
00:00:41
both of these scales I'm gonna teach you
00:00:43
an exercise to practice connecting these
00:00:46
scales and then I'm gonna teach you to
00:00:47
amazing licks that incorporates both of
00:00:50
these scales so let's go ahead and dive
00:00:52
in alright let's first talk about both
00:00:53
of these scales you probably already
00:00:55
know your first scale it's called your C
00:00:58
blue scale or your C minor blue scale
00:01:01
the notes in case you don't know them
00:01:02
are C flat we cross the thumb under to F
00:01:07
then we go third finger on F sharp then
00:01:10
we go thumb on G and then B flat okay
00:01:13
it's a six note scale it's very simple
00:01:15
okay so if you don't know this you can
00:01:17
just practice this up the piano want to
00:01:19
build a little bit of speed here
00:01:20
generally you land on your fourth finger
00:01:22
for the sea up at the top and then you
00:01:25
can practice this back down the piano
00:01:26
okay do work on getting some speed here
00:01:28
you can also practice this in multiple
00:01:31
octaves let's say if you wanted to come
00:01:33
up to the high C then you would use your
00:01:35
thumb there on the C and then you can
00:01:37
bring this all the way up to the high C
00:01:38
so make sure you know this blues scale
00:01:40
this is called your C minor blues scale
00:01:43
and this is a great place to start
00:01:44
[Music]
00:01:51
and after a while it can start to sound
00:01:52
a little bit repetitive because we're
00:01:54
just using one scale and so when I'm
00:01:57
playing the Blues and when professional
00:01:58
blues pianists are playing the Blues
00:02:00
they're also incorporating a second
00:02:02
scale which is called the major blues
00:02:05
scale it's kind of a happier sounding
00:02:07
scale
00:02:17
and so this is how we incorporate both
00:02:19
of these scales well let me go ahead and
00:02:21
teach you this major blue scale first
00:02:24
and then we'll talk about how to use
00:02:25
this in your blues improvisation so the
00:02:28
major blues scale goes like this by the
00:02:31
way this is also called the gospel scale
00:02:33
I use that term a lot the notes of the
00:02:36
scale are C D d sharp e that's gonna be
00:02:42
the thumb on e and then we go G and a
00:02:45
okay and then you can end on your pinky
00:02:47
on the top C okay so just these six
00:02:50
notes C D D sharp thumb under to e G and
00:02:55
a it's a five note scale you can think
00:02:57
of it as a C pentatonic scale right
00:03:00
Penta being five with the addition of
00:03:03
the flat three okay so some people will
00:03:05
call this pentatonic flat three but the
00:03:08
technical technical name of it is AC
00:03:10
major blues scale and you can also call
00:03:13
it gospel scale ironically this is also
00:03:15
your a minor blues scale if you took
00:03:18
your a minor blues scale and you went AC
00:03:22
d sharp eg a that's an a minor blues
00:03:26
scale that's the same scale as your C
00:03:29
major blues scale it shares the same
00:03:32
notes so this is kind of a little trick
00:03:34
to remember your major blues scale is
00:03:36
just go down three half steps from
00:03:39
whatever key are in so 1 2 3 and then
00:03:42
it's going to be your a minor blues
00:03:44
scale
00:03:45
so they're the same scale right so just
00:03:48
keep this in mind I do want to mention
00:03:49
guys this lesson sheet music you're
00:03:51
seeing up here in the top left of the
00:03:52
screen is downloadable and principal
00:03:54
over at piano with Johnny you can also
00:03:56
change the key with our smart sheet
00:03:58
music you can actually practice this
00:03:59
lesson in all 12 keys with the click of
00:04:02
one button so I'll put a link to that
00:04:03
below so that is the gospel of scale and
00:04:06
I recommend just practice practicing
00:04:07
this on a c7 chord
00:04:09
coming up the piano building some speed
00:04:12
up to C you can also do this in multiple
00:04:14
octaves if you wanted to do this in two
00:04:17
octaves I would practice the thumb on
00:04:19
the seat and bring this up to the high C
00:04:21
just like that okay so the C minor blues
00:04:24
scale and the C major blues scale so
00:04:28
once you have both of these scales okay
00:04:29
well how do we actually then use both of
00:04:30
these scales in our improvisation well
00:04:34
before you try to improvise with both of
00:04:36
these scales you need to practice
00:04:37
connecting these scales you see because
00:04:40
a good improviser will mix in both
00:04:42
scales so this is an exercise I put
00:04:44
together for you to really help you make
00:04:47
both of these skills part of your
00:04:48
playing now before I teach you the
00:04:50
exercise if you're enjoying this video
00:04:52
please give it a thumbs up and if you're
00:04:53
new to the channel hit that subscribe
00:04:55
button for more videos just like this so
00:04:58
here's how the exercise goes we're going
00:05:00
to play our 12 bar blues in our left
00:05:01
hand we're gonna start on a high C and
00:05:03
we're gonna play the major blues scale
00:05:06
up and the minor blues scale down and
00:05:08
here's how you do it okay you're gonna
00:05:10
go up C D
00:05:12
d sharp E G a C that's gonna be thumb
00:05:17
make sure use your thumb there and then
00:05:18
you're gonna go to finger on D and
00:05:20
that's gonna connect you back down on
00:05:23
your C minor blue scale and this time
00:05:26
you're gonna come down B flat G G flat F
00:05:29
B flat C B flat ok does that make sense
00:05:33
so we're going up major blue scale
00:05:37
and down minor blue scale
00:05:42
and then you can come back up major
00:05:44
blues scale and minor blues scale
00:05:50
okay it's actually pretty simple
00:05:51
exercise now make sure you're swinging
00:05:54
these notes one and two and three and
00:05:57
four and one and two and three and four
00:06:00
and one okay really really important
00:06:03
okay so we're gonna go over the chords
00:06:05
here real quick for the 12 bar blues
00:06:07
we're gonna play if the backing track
00:06:09
and then I'm gonna show you some really
00:06:10
sweet lines some riffs and licks that
00:06:14
you can use with both of these scales
00:06:15
all right here we go
00:06:16
let's play the full twelve bar blues
00:06:17
form a quick review of the Blues chords
00:06:20
we have c7 that's our first chord we
00:06:23
have an f7 that's our second chord and
00:06:25
then later on you're going to see a g7
00:06:27
that's gonna be like this okay so I'll
00:06:29
memorize these three chords these are
00:06:31
the three chords you need to play the
00:06:33
blues now if you don't know your twelve
00:06:34
bar blues form you don't know your blues
00:06:36
chords you can learn these in our 10
00:06:39
lesson blues challenge I'll put a link
00:06:41
to that below and we talk really
00:06:42
in-depth about blues soloing so here we
00:06:45
go guys let's play the scale up
00:06:49
and now down on the minor blue scale
00:06:54
up on the major blue scale
00:06:58
and then down on the minor blue scale
00:07:04
up on the major blue scale
00:07:08
down on the minor blues
00:07:12
upon major blues
00:07:15
and again down on minor blues
00:07:19
now we're gonna switch to that g7 chord
00:07:22
up on the major blues
00:07:26
down on the minor blues on the f7 chord
00:07:32
up on the major blues
00:07:36
and down on the minor blues
00:07:41
okay does that make sense now you can
00:07:43
have some fun with your left can you can
00:07:45
do some little chord pops sometimes I'll
00:07:47
do this rhythm called the Charleston
00:07:49
rhythm
00:07:54
basically I'm popping the cord on the
00:07:56
end of beat to one and two and right
00:08:00
lines up there three and four and and
00:08:03
then I'll come down one and two and
00:08:06
we'll line up like that okay you can do
00:08:08
this on all of the measures okay you
00:08:11
want to practice this once you get this
00:08:12
up to speed go ahead and play along with
00:08:14
the backing track this lesson does come
00:08:16
with the backing track here we go go
00:08:24
down and up major blues down minor blues
00:08:31
up
00:08:34
down minor blues
00:08:37
up
00:08:39
and down
00:08:44
and down
00:08:49
down
00:08:51
alright let's go ahead and stop there I
00:08:53
do want to mention that this backing
00:08:55
track is downloadable at piano with
00:08:57
Johnny comm I'll put a link to that
00:08:59
below as well I do want to make a quick
00:09:01
note here before I teach you some of
00:09:03
these really sweet licks that use these
00:09:05
two scales that you may have noticed on
00:09:07
the f7 chord
00:09:09
that ye does not really line up very
00:09:12
well with this cord and so this is one
00:09:14
of the avoid notes basically if I'm
00:09:16
playing my major blue scale on an f7
00:09:19
chord because that f7 has an E flat in
00:09:22
the chord then I would avoid the e
00:09:24
because this is a a major 7 and the F
00:09:27
has a dominant 7 in the scored okay if
00:09:30
you don't know your dominant 7 chords
00:09:32
then I would check out our 7th chord
00:09:34
courses over at piano with Johnny so
00:09:36
make sure to avoid that particular note
00:09:38
only when you're playing the f7 chord on
00:09:40
the the c7 and on the g7 it's fine to
00:09:44
play the E flat because it doesn't
00:09:46
contradict any of the notes in this
00:09:48
court alright so here we go let's talk
00:09:50
about some licks that you can play with
00:09:52
both of these skills this is where the
00:09:54
rubber meets the road and you can
00:09:56
actually start to use these ideas so
00:09:57
here's a quick example of how I would
00:09:59
use both skills in a lick check this out
00:10:15
okay super super cool okay so what am I
00:10:18
doing here
00:10:19
basically I'm starting on my C blue
00:10:21
scale with my B flat on the minor blue
00:10:24
scale B flat I'm doing a little turn to
00:10:27
the G so grab that B flat turn down C B
00:10:31
flat G okay
00:10:32
and then I'm gonna do a crossover at G
00:10:34
flat and C okay and then I'm gonna go
00:10:37
middle finger on F and then e flat C E
00:10:41
flat and then I'm in this mamas f7 chord
00:10:44
I'm gonna grab my major blues scale this
00:10:47
is gonna be the switch here okay D and a
00:10:49
I'm gonna grab this I'm gonna do a
00:10:51
little turn off that D okay that's a
00:10:54
flat DC and now I'm gonna go back to my
00:10:57
minor blues scale B flat G little
00:11:01
harmony there gr G flat and C f/c and
00:11:05
then I'm gonna go back to my major blues
00:11:07
scale get in that cool I'm grabbing DNA
00:11:13
on the top doing a little turn off that
00:11:16
D so grab it turn hey on the bottom CNA
00:11:21
okay and that's gonna be basically the
00:11:23
lick and then we repeat it like that
00:11:25
okay so once more here's the full lick
00:11:27
it's a minor blues crossover major blues
00:11:36
minor blues major blues and when you
00:11:44
speed this up it sounds super cool
00:11:45
here's a little bit faster
00:11:52
and that nice and you can do this over
00:11:55
your full blues form so next chord I'm
00:11:57
on is on an f7 you can do the same thing
00:12:04
and that nice you do it on the g7 chord
00:12:15
okay all right before I teach you lick
00:12:17
number two I do want to mention if you
00:12:19
want to learn more licks and riffs just
00:12:21
like this check out our Bible of blues
00:12:23
riffs course we have 120 of my favorite
00:12:27
blues riffs for a beginner through an
00:12:29
advanced playing level
00:12:31
all right lick number two this is a
00:12:33
really fun way that I like to use both
00:12:35
of these skills together here's how I
00:12:36
play this one
00:12:38
[Music]
00:12:44
okay this is a Superfund lick basically
00:12:47
I'm starting nice and high on my major
00:12:49
blues scale DNA I do a little turn off
00:12:52
the e or the D so I go a flat DC like
00:12:56
that and then I come back up D and a C
00:13:00
crossover this time I'm gonna go minor
00:13:03
blues B flat G I'm gonna stay on my
00:13:06
minor blues G flat and C down to F and C
00:13:10
by the way you could use your two finger
00:13:12
there B flat and C down to C by itself twice
00:13:16
and now we're gonna go major blues okay
00:13:22
it's gonna be a down slide from the E
00:13:24
flat to the D so like that you can use
00:13:27
your third finger you could use your two
00:13:29
finger like that so twice on the slide
00:13:31
and then a and then C an a up to the DNA
00:13:36
okay and then we do that again little
00:13:38
pick up note make sense take here's how
00:13:42
the whole thing sounds one and two and
00:13:45
three and four and
00:13:50
and four and one two three and four two
00:13:56
and three four okay and then if you play
00:13:59
this with the backing track it sounds
00:14:01
super cool check out what this sounds
00:14:03
like a woman - here we go
00:14:08
[Music]

Most piano students learn the blues scale and improvise blues up and down the piano with this one scale. While this is a great place to start, eventually it can start to sound a little bit repetitive to use the same scale. The fact is that most professional blues pianists actually use 2 different blues scales when improvising over the blues. Just listen to pianists like Oscar Peterson, Dr. John, and Otis Spann. In today’s lesson, you’re going to learn these 2 essential blues piano scales so that you can take your blues improv to the next level. You’ll learn: - The Minor Blues Scale - The Major Blues Scale - 12-Bar Blues Chords on Piano - An Exercise to Connect Your Blues Scale - 2 Licks That Incorporate Both Scales Get your FREE 14-Day Trial to PWJ here: https://pianowithjonny.com/ Happy practicing!
